Family problem - burning tongue

My husband and I have recently moved back to the Uk from Germany and are now both suffering from a tongue problem that began in Germany, has followed us here and the doctors don't know how to treat.
I developed the problem first around 3 months ago when I had a burnt tongue sensation in my mouth which developed after eating very hot food. I assumed I had burnt my tongue but it did not subside nad grew steadily worse through one week. My doctor told me the tongue looked healthy and asked me to try salt water washes as he did not think it was thrush. I found the salt water too painfull to bear and begam to stop eating, especially hot, dry foods and tea (my staple drink). My tongue now felt as if it was covered in tiny cuts and lacerations although I could see nothing.
Meanwhile my husband developed the same symptoms and started to drink water in copious amounts, and my daughter complained her tongue hurt. Our GP prescribed antibiotics for the entire family.
After another two weeks my tongue felt better. We then m oved to the UK but my husband's tongue has not got better. Some days are btter than others. He has seen a dentist, oral hygienist and 2 doctors who have run blood tests. Noone can find anything wrong and the mouthwashes, tongue scrapers and toothpastes have done nothing. And today the burning sensation has returned to me. Please help! I am breast feeding a 7 month old baby and don't want to feel ill or not eat properly.
Other details: my husband has eczema but is otherwise very fit and healthy although he has always suffered from restless legs at night, hot feet and dreams which he can act out if he is stressed. I love to sleep but don't get enough with two tiny tots. I sleep easily and have colourful dreams. I have vitilgo and scoliosis with a Harrington rod and have regular physiotherapy to help with shoulder, neck and back pain. We are both 31.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Hi Holly, look up Irisvers on this site and see if more of your symptoms fit.

Thank you for the reply. The list of other symptoms don't apply to myself or my husband for Iris. Have considered sepia for myself and arsenicum albium for my husband but as I am totally unqualified and inexperienced have not bought it. Need to remedy though as I have begun to stop eating and am not eating hot or strong flavoured foods. My husbands tongue does not feel cut or lacerated though, and he still eats normally.
Any thoughts please?

the symptoms you need to check out are the tongue symptoms and any other symptoms you have had in relation to the tongue problem (those that happened at the same time or since) - you don't need to have all the symptoms for the remedy to be correct when treating such an acute situation

Dear Erica

Many thanks for your reply.

Do you mean that I need only to have the tongue symptoms for the remedy to work? It confuses me as the burning tongue symtom also appears for arsenicum albium and sepia. Is Irisbetter? In what quantities???

hollyimo last decade
PS Cannot honestly say that the other symptoms listed apply. I do have back pain, but not in a a burning way, more steady ache, knotted shoulders and stiff painful neck. These symptoms have been with me long term (spinal fusion in 1990).

hollyimo last decade
the tongue symptoms and what makes these symptoms worse or better are the most important in this instance.
I will check these remedies out further for you tomorrow and pls read the remedies you mention considering what makes better/worse.
I cannot imagine why hot spices would have left you with such a problem so it would help if you could consider what else happened on the day it started that could have caused the reaction. any history of allergies?

erika last decade
Dear Erika

I have no allergies to think of, but my husband has eczema and hayfever. He thinks our two conditions unrelated (!) as his is unaffected by food and drink, and feels better when he drinks cool water and hangs it out of his mouth. He has also been suffering with some food intolerances lately, with flatulence and bloatedness. He has very restless legs too.

As for me, other than my long term back problems I am relatively healthy. I have recently begun to lose hair through hormone changes (I gave birth 7 months ago and am still breastfeeding), am fairly irritable in the morniongs, probably because I want more sleep, and am intolerant of loud noises. I have very dry skin especially on my heels and hands and have recently seen two verruccas on my feet. My tongue feels much worse during and after eating, and today has become inflamed and small spots on the tongue have become inflamed. There are also cracks in the centre.
I am not entirely sure that eating hot food caused the problem, it just felt burnt as if the food was too hot. Perhaps an infection of some kind.

I greatly appreciate your time and interest in me and my husband. Kind wishes to you and yours.

the other thought - if you are convinced you all really could have burnt your tongues then try Cantharis 30c, 3 times daily for 3 days and see if this helps the tongues.

our last posts got sent at the same time! I can see from your reply that it might not be a burn. I will work on this and get back, maybe today maybe after the weekend. Pls if you think of anything else that describes your problem post it here asap. thanks :)

Erika,

Many thanks.... I have difficulty swallowing today and have soreness on the upper back part of my throat/mounth. Eating is increasingly difficult and I only want to drink water. Feel very tired and impatient with my children.

Best regards.

Hi again - from all the symptoms you have mentioned so far I would recommend for your tongue Nat. Mur. and for your husbands tongue Sanicula.
Both can be taken in either 6c, 12c or 30c - whichever potency you get take 1 dose (pillule/pellet) 3 times daily for 3 days and then reassess whether it has helped/whether to take more by reporting back here.
Hope it helps! Erika :)

erika last decade
Thank you so much Erika. Do you mean sanicula agua or sanguinana canadensis?

hollyimo last decade
You're welcome. The name is Sanicula (aqua).

This is only for relief and is not for your listed symtpoms :

Calendula-Q (mother tincture) (one teapoon in 100 ml water). 2-3 times daily.
Gargle strongly for 5-6 times. NO fresh water gargle after above.
The above will atleast relieve the tongue / mouth problem in a day or two. But still continue for a week or so. You may do the above alongwith any homeopathic medicines you would be taking. It will act as complementary. Since you are nursing, a perfect constitutional medicine will have to be repertorised. The remedy suggested by parachute above, though not constitutional, seems appropriate under the circumstances.

You are sensitising your tongue by eating or drinking something like sucking on a mint or lozenges, or eating cream biscuits, coke or some sort of chemicalised food, including iodised salt. Check your digestion, gas, stools. Your other symptoms suggest Irritable Bowel Syndrome due to some food intolerance.

Thank you for your reply Nisha. I am but a baby in relation to homeopathy and want to learn about this world... please explain 'perfect constitutional medicine' and 'repertorised'. Also please tell me why you think Iristo be appropriate.
IBS.... my family eat only organic produce and very little meat. I don't eat any ready-made foods or things like biscuits or sodas. I make our bread too.... Life would be too unfair to me to give me a food intolerance! Could I not just be rundown from babies etc????
Kind wishes to you.
PS Can anyone explain to me what a 'nozone' is, not sure if spelt correctly.

hollyimo last decade
PPS What and where could I get Calendula-Q from?

hollyimo last decade
Repertorising is looking up the symptoms you give in a repertory (a book listing homeopathic symptoms and referring you to remedies).
I assure you this has been done to come to the suggestion of nat mur and sanicula. I always work in this way.
Irisdoes appear under burning tongue sensation.
Nat mur has burning tongue, worse when eating or drinking.
Sanicula has burning tongue, better for hanging tongue out of mouth and better for cold drinks.
Calendula as suggested by Nesha will most definitely help you get relief.
A nosode is a homeopathic remedy made originally from a disease source.

erika last decade
nat mur also worse after eating.

erika last decade
Thank you Erika. I hope you don't think I doubt your advice or wisdom, I simply didn't understand what Nesha was saying. I have ordered nat.mur. and sanicula from weleda and will report progress.
Kind regards.

hollyimo last decade
PS Cannot source Calendula-Q in the UK... any ideas?

hollyimo last decade
in uk you can order calendula mother tincture in health shops or order from helios pharmacy. you can order the remedies from helios also - but weleda is fine. it is possible weleda sell the calendula with hypericum called hypercal - this is also ok for healing and soothing.
although it is ok to bathe the tongue with these mother tinctures check the advice on label as it is possible you should not swallow.
let me know how you get on. erika :)

erika last decade
Calendula common name is Marigold, found wild and aplenty in UK and Ireland. Google search picture image of Marigold. If Calendula-Q is not available and if Marigold plant is available. Boil the whole green plant in 500 ml water till water reduces to 300 ml. Filter using a fine cloth.

You can use the above solution to gargle in place of Calendula-Q. To store or preserve the solution add brandy or alcohol (1:10 ratio). Can be refrigerated. Perfectly no harm in swallowing or gulping homeopathic Calendula-Q.

IBS can be caused by even an organic food. It is not the question of what you eat. It is how the Stomach linings react to any particular food, whether organic or non-organic. Some people can't tolerate water melon or potato or tomato, even though these are perfectly organic. These may cause lots falutence, gas, pain, bloatedness among other symptoms.

The indications of Irisvers, as described by parachute are : (unless parachute indicates otherwise)
- Indicated for Skin symtpoms
- Scalding of tongue, pricking sensation of tongue
- Heat and smarting sensation of tongue and throat.
- Irritation of the whole alimentary canal.

However likewise other remedies are indicated too, some as indicated by erika, but as said earlier a perfect constitutional medicine will have to be repertorised, preferably with a face to face sitting with a professionally qualified homeopath doctor.

Also if possible let me know the confusing part on my post.

Nesha-India last decade
Both advices given are correct, but if you are having difficulty in eating/swallowing I would try Irisfirst as an acute remedy. This may relieve and help you to reduce pain and be able to eat the food you need, once this happens go have a face to face consult with a hpath for constitutional.

Regards

Hi, my name is Lisa and I cannot believe that I finally found someone who has the same symptoms that I have. I have had a sore throat and tongue, which has a constant burning and numb feeling for well over a month. It seems to be getting worse, so I am anxious to find a cure, before my entire insides get eaten away.
It feels worse when I eat seasoned foods, or any type of saucy dish.
I went to the doctor about a week ago, who prescribed me something for reflux to try for a month, and if that does not work, then they will do bloodwork.
I think I was born with a Geographic tongue. I have always had the cracks and lines in it, and at times I would get the white patches along the sides. I have never been able to eat hot (spicy) foods. If I did, I would get the burnt, bitter feeling on my tongue. Now, I have this chronic condition as if I have permanent damage. My throat is very irritated and feels inflamed as well, and now the roof of my mouth is irritated.
I have red streaks of blood vessels visable on the roof of my mouth, which feels like it has been scraped.
After reading your story, I feel like I have some type of bacterial infection that will not go away without some type of antibiotics.
My 3 year old daughter complains of her throat hurting every day as well. I don't know if she is serious, or just mimicking what she hears me saying. She sometimes shares my cup or water bottle. I am beginning to think I passed it on to her.
I am going to make a doctors appt. for her too.
I do suffer from allergies.
I am allergic to dust and pollen. I am taking allergy pills for that. Maybe I am allergic to food? I lost weight as well. I just force myself to eat despite the discomfort from eating.
I pray that I gain insight from this website.

Dear Lisa
Sounds similar although I haven't got the blood vessels on the roof of my mouth as you describe. I have still got burning tongue and am seeing my GP this week about it. I may ask to see a specialist. Unfortunatley the homeopathic remedies have not made a difference to the condition, but am still searching. Have found temporary relief by drinking lots of cool water and avoiding caffeine. Also 'scratchy' foods like brown bread can make it worse and red wine makes it aggravated. Cold live natural yoghurt feels good too.
My tongue is still cracked through the centre and the end is covered in raised red lumps a little like strawberries, like yours?
My little girl who is nearly three also said her tongue hurt, but I think this was mimicking.
Keep looking, I think it will go away if you keep trying and stay positive.
