Dog Sudden Deafness

My 10-year old toy poodle was nearly completely deaf following a teeth cleaning for which she was anesthetized for 16 minutes. Prior to the procedure her hearing was extremely good. Vet is not sure whether the anesthesia is the cause or perhaps an inflammation or infection. She was given an antibiotic (injection and pill) and an anti-inflammatory. In the almost five weeks since the teeth cleaning, I have given her supplements and taken her to a holistic vet for chiropractic and acupuncture with Chinese herbs. Her hearing is gradually improving but still far from what it was. She rubs her ears some but not a great deal, is not much interested in her kibble (but eagerly eats treats), and when she eats her kibble she uncharacteristically drops crumbs all over, including her water bowl. She is drinking and urinating much more than normal. Suggestions appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Please give her a single dose of Phosphorus 200 and see how that affects in 15 days. Only one, not daily.

One dose means 2 pills served in her mouth.
You may dissolve 2 pills or drops in some water and give her few sips.

Thank you for the recommendation for Phosphorus 200, one dose, which I gave to my dog 16 days ago. There has been no significant improvement. In fact, if anything, there may have been a slight decline in the improvement previously observed, but it was not sudden - more like a slight drop off. The only new symptom, which began about 5-6 days ago, is she is afraid to and refuses to eat kibble out of her bowl. She'll eat it only if I am touching the bowl or if I hand feed it or pour it on the floor. Suggestions appreciated.

Please, what do you mean by '33 drops with a water'? Thank you.

By any chance was she given prednisone injection?

Phos was supposed to antidote the anesthetics.

No prednisone was given in any form. This is really heartbreaking because she went from a lively, inquisitive, playful dog to one that 'sleeps' a lot - presumably because her aural stimulation is so greatly diminished. Suggestions appreciated.

gfx337, please follow the suggestions of Dr. Kadwa and report back to him.

Thank you. I did follow Dr. Kadwa's suggestions and reported yesterday, January 7 (see above), no improvement.

Followed Dr. Kadwa's suggestion of a single dose of Arsenicum Album 200 16 days ago. On or about day three dog did eat kibble from bowl for three days, then became fearful of doing so once again and refuses to eat kibble from bowl since that time. Will eat soft things from bowl. No improvement in hearing.

Pl. try a dose of Anacardium 200 this may bring back his hearing-but only if no homeopath responds for next few days.

Dr. Kadwa, do you agree with the suggestion of Anacardium for dog with hearing loss and now fear of eating hard food from bowl? Many thanks.

I have a 10 year old chow mix and she went in to get her teeth cleaned and is now deaf. As with your dog, she sleeps much and I am heartbroken. She came home a different dog. Can you tell me how your dog is currently doing? I am afraid there is nothing I can do, and she has a condition where her gums grow over her teeth, so we risk infections and loss of more teeth if we do not have them cleaned annually. What a terrible predicament. :(

To the Chow mix owner, I am so sorry to hear about your dog. To answer your question, my dog is much better. She definitely has what I now accept to be permanent hearing loss (despite all the healing modalities I tried), but she can hear - I would say at about 50% normal (her hearing had been like 125%!). More important, I guess, is that she is now almost back to normal otherwise, which I attribute primarily to a supplement recommended by one of the holistic vets we saw and available online: Cholodin. If you read the reviews on Amazon you may understand how it can help, and it most definitely helped my dog. She had been rather zombie-like and within a few days of starting her on Cholodin she was 'plugged in' and perky. I had started her on a tooth powder prior to the dental and have since added another so she won't have to go through this again. They are ProDen PlaqueOff, made in Sweden, I think, from seaweed, and Vetri-Science Perio Support. Both powders are sprinkled on her food. I am at the stage of happy with the tremendous progress, but still, it is terribly sad to think of and notice what was lost. If there is a way you can send me your personal e-mail address or phone number I would be happy to try to help you. Best wishes.

I have been searching for natural remedies, as I already treat her for SLO, nail bed infection with essential fatty oils. I am unable to post my email or personal information, sorry to make it so difficult. thanks again.
