Dog with lumps

My ten year old lab has lumps under his skin. They are squishy and seem to be attached within the skin. The largest are about 2.5 inches in diameter. The smallest about the size of a quarter. There are more on the side he lays on than the other. I am told these are 'normal' in a dog his age and that if they were harder or firmly affixed they might be cause for worry. In any case I am wondering if anyone has experience using a remedy for this sort of thing. I'm sure they don't *need* to be there.
ps. He is in great overall health. Shiny coat, trim, active.
