Two month old with reflux

I have a two month old son who has been diagnosed with reflux. Our ped wants to prescribe Zantac but I'd rather him not be on that. He is gaining weight fine and is a happy baby. The issue is that he spits quit a bit after his feedings and then a lot of times up to an hour and a half or so after his feeding while taking a nap in his crib which wakes him up. He is also very gassy which I think wakes him up sometimes too. Gas drops don't seem to help this any. I've been reading about the Nat Phos 6x and wanted to ask your opinion on giving this to my son and in what dosage.

Thanks so much!

Michelle

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I'm not a homeopath but have you tried Gripe's Water? You can buy that at most pharmacy stores over the counter.

I had a neice with this issue who was helped tremendously by homemade goat's milk formula. (google for recipe to make this)

This infant could not tolerate mother's milk or commercial formula.

That's how we got her off zantac which was causing stunted growth. And she was able to drink this until she was old enough to be weaned.

Good luck. Hopefully a homeopath also responds with something more helpful.

Yes, I have tried Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water, Colic Calm, and regular infant gas drops - nothing seems to help so I thought I'd try this route!

Forgot to mention that he is formula fed.

It is very likely that your baby suffers from Gastric Reflux aka GERD (Gastro Esophagal Reflux Disease)

The remedies that have proved to be very effective for Baby GERD are:

Nat Phos 6x dose half tablet dissolved in milk given immediately after a feed

Arnica 30c in the Wet dose given twice daily. Half teaspoonful is a dose.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Liquid pack in Alcohol, also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard at least 6 times before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this enhances the effect of the remedy on the user.

You will STOP all other drugs prescribed for baby which as you have already seen have not done any good.

Please confirm that you burp baby immediately after each feed.

You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby. You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.

You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily and Arnica 30c in the Wet dose taken twice daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that this remedy will also help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.

Report progress in 24 hours and as often as you wish on this thread .

I have been able to find the nat phos 6x locally but will have to order the arnica montana. Can I go ahead and start the nat phos or should I wait until I get the arnica and start them together?

Give your baby the half tablet Nat Phos 6x after each feed ASAP to relieve his current distress.

You may give him the Arnica when it arrives.

Ok. I will start with his next feed. Also, in a 24 hour period he takes 4 ounces of formula 7 times. Do I give him a half tablet at all feedings - day and night?

Also, I know the nat phos is for reflux issue but what is the arnica used for?

The Arnica helps to rebuild the delicate tissue in the Esophagus which has metastasized to resemble the gut due to constant erosion by the gastric juice which is refluxed when vomiting.

This occurs more in adults than in babies and is to be used if the Nat Phos does not work, which is usually does.

Report baby's response after you give him 2 doses of Nat Phos 6x after a feed.

Amazingly so far after two doses at his last two feeds he has spit up hardly any!! I've noticed a little bit of refluxing coming up in his throat but he doesn't seem bothered by it. He also took a great nap! We have been working on sleep training over the last week and he was going to sleep on his own great but having trouble waking early. I will continue the nat phos 6x and report tomorrow!

Great

Glad I was able to help you with my 'Joepathy'

Reflux seems better overall but this morning he did have an episode where he spit quite a lot after his feeding. Should I try to increase the dosage or just continue as is for another day or so and then taper off?

It is very likely that his gastric imbalance will stabilize in a few days as you have already experienced in the last few days without using any drugs that you may have been prescribed by your pediatrician.

Nat Phos 6x cannot be considered as a DRUG as it only stimulates the normal digestive process, which it does very safely, and enables the baby's digestive system to stabilize.

Update - his spit up has significantly reduced although he does still spit at times but not every feeding. He does seem to wake from naps with gas pains. Do you have any suggestions for this? Also, should I continue to give the nat phos?

I prescribed Nat Phos 6x for your baby a week ago and you have given it to him and have already observed that it has helped him.

In my last post I stated:
'
Nat Phos 6x cannot be considered as a DRUG as it only stimulates the normal digestive process, which it does very safely, and enables the baby's digestive system to stabilise.'

The gas pains you refer to all indicate that baby is not happy with the formula you are giving him and you can change the brand.

It is up to you to decide whether or not you wish to continue with the Nat Phos which has already helped baby or to give him the PPI drug Zantac which you stated was prescribed, which has been found to cause severe distress in adults and far more distress in babies.

You can Google 'Danger of PPI drugs' to be better informed.

Thanks so much! I do not want to give the Zantac. I feel he is stabilizing nicely. His last feeding he didn't spit up at all. The gas is occasional so he could still be stabilizing and working through or I may consider it to be his formula. I'll observe him a little longer before I make a decision on that. Thanks so much for all your help!!
