Lattice degeneration in retina of both eyes + high myopic. What are the chances of developing a retinal detachment in future, and can homeopathy reverse this condition ?
I am a male, 29 years, fairly high myopic (-6.25 D left eye and -7.50 D right eye). I am a Computational Biologist, so have to work on computers for long hours at a stretch. My eye powers are fairly constant since about 4 years or so. Recently I had a dilated pupil exam done for the first time and the doctor detected Lattice Degeneration of the retina (peripheral thinning of retina) in both eyes. However, there was no tears or holes. I visited a homeopathic practitioner in the locale and he gave me Ruta 6 + Calc Carb. Can you please suggest how efficacious are these drugs for prevention or even reversing the lattice degeneration ? Also, can Retinal Detachments in future (if any) be prevented by Homeopathy ? I have had floaters since a long time back and they are still there. I am taking the homeopathic medicines since a month or so.shayonbh on 2013-09-11
This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Can someone please help? I would like to add that after 2 months of treatment, I am not seeing any change in my symptoms - I still have floaters in my eye. Recently, got a dilated eye exam done. Still there are no formation of holes/tears/breaks. Can any doctor let me know please an effective remedy to arrest this peripheral retinal degeneration?

I apologise for my late response. Thank you so much for your response. I did not notice any tiny bit improvement in my symptoms, it has gotten worse, one could say. Please find the answers to the questionnaire posted by you:
1. Your age & sex
A: 29, male (will be 30 this November) and high myopic (-6.25 left eye, -7.5 right eye).
2. Describe your appearance i.e. weight, height, body type (male, 5 7, 110 lbs, always struggle to control weight )
A: weight: 78 kilos, height: 5' 5', Hefty body more because of protruding stomach, struggle to get the stomach flat, otherwise not fat, do struggle to control weight.
3. What are the symptoms of your health problem (Constipation, dry, hard, balls like stool, no urge for many days )
A: Increased floaters in vision of both eyes. Previously I used to see them only occasionally. Now they have become permanent - present all the time even in dim light. Most of the floaters' shapes are like strands and tree branches (two long ones on left eye), some of them are hair like, while some descend from the bottom are round dots (4-5) on both eyes. Sometimes when I sit in a dark room and look out of the windows, and move my eyes, I see a cloud or haze moving in the opposite direction of movement of eyes for a split second.
I also have begun to have glares from night lights - like looking at the headlight of an approaching car at night, the light seem all scattered (wasn't like this before). If there are too many lights in the street at night, it looks smoky. I wear anti-glare glasses, but of no use. Otherwise, sharpness of vision (visual acuity) is fine. Sometimes I also have difficulty focussing at night, but that could be because I use a lot of computers.
4. How & when did this problem begin (it began 3 years back when .)
A: Floaters began 3 months ago, when I was reading an article on the white background of the computer screen. I got checked by the retinal specialist for a dilated exam, and he said that I had lattice degeneration of the retina, but no tears or breaks or holes in regions of lattice. There was some thinning and vitreo-retinal traction as well. He said the increased floaters were because the vitreous gel was degenerating. This is a common phenomena with age, but since I was high myopic, it happened much earlier in life for me. So, if the vitreous gel pulls away from the retina, and there is enough traction, it can cause tears in the areas of lattice, which may proceed to a future Retinal Detachment.
I began experiencing glares from night lights about 3 weeks ago.
5. What makes the problem better or worse (It gets worse when ., it gets better when ..)
A: It getters better when I am indoors and not looking at something bright, gets worse when I am out in the open and looking at blue sky or at a computer screen or anything with a bright background. Sometimes when I look down for a long time and suddenly look up, I find a number of them moving from bottom to top, and again go down.
6. How do you feel emotionally (I feel sad & depressed, thinking about suicide ..)
A: A bit depressed/sad about my present condition, since there sis an important venture ahead in my life, which could change everything, and I don't want my vision to be a hindrance.
7. Describe your personality (Very sensitive, headstrong, suspicious, jealous .)
A: Emotional, Sensitive, Passionate, Irritable, Restless, Anxious, Nervous, sometimes damn care.
8. How do you relax (Walking outdoors relaxes me .)
A: Music, brisk walk outside, Pranayams.
9. Do you fight or flight (I never pick any fights ..)
A: Not really, no, not unnecessarily.
10. What are your fears (I am terrified of spiders, dogs, cats, closed spaces, heights )
A: Spiders and insecurity about future.
11. What occupies your mind mostly (I cant sit idle and keep thinking about .)
A: My health and my career mostly.
12. How do you respond to consolation (I hate consolation )
A: I respond positively. It is always good to have someone comforting you.
13. Do you want to stay alone or with people (I want to be alone .)
A: I prefer to stay alone or people with whom I can discuss philosophy or science. Small talks don't interest me.
14. How is your sleep (I have poor sleep, always wake up tired ..)
A: I usually sleep late at night, take time to fall asleep, but once I sleep, I usually don't wake up in the middle of the night, but I do wake up in the morning tired and feeling like sleeping more.
15. Do you have any recurring dreams (I dream of snakes regularly .)
A: No, I don't.
16. What type of weather do you like and how it affects your complaints (My complaints are better in winter ..)
A: I enjoy winters mostly, because I hate sweating. Floaters do not change irrespective of winter or summer.
17. Do you normally feel hot or cold (I am usually hot and like winter more. I keep wearing light clothes in winter even ..)
A: I usually feel hot and like winter more. I keep wearing light clothes in winter.
18. What types of clothes you wear (I like loose clothes especially around the neck. )
A: I like wearing tees and jeans, mostly light. Tight clothes make me claustrophobic.
19. What foods & taste you love & hate (I like fried foods and hate slimy foods. I like sweets more than anything else. I hate meat, love chicken ..)
A: I like non-vegetarian food (fish, meat, chicken), like sweets, like and enjoy both baked and fried food. I do hate slimy foods, fods which are dry.
20. Do you want to eat indigestible foods (Yes, I want to eat chalk ..)
A: Nope, no desire.
21. How is your thirst (I am thirsty all the time )
A: I feel thirsty often. Feel like have a dry mouth and throat.
22. Any coating on tongue (some white coating on edges only )
A: White coating on tongue.

28. Females menses details for regularity & flow (I have late periods, with clots, bright red blood, very heavy ..)
A: N.A.
29. What illnesses are running in your family, mothers side & fathers side & brothers/sisters
A: Mother is suffering from Hypothyroidism and has issues related to digestion and bowel movement. Father is high diabetic (type 2), which was mainly evoked due to pancreatic stone during young age.
Thank you for helping me. Your advice and medications is highly appreciated.

I am sorry again for my late response. I was away for a while. I promise to be regular in answering your questions for now on, and thank you for taking a closer look at my case.
I am posting the answers to your queries:
1. Since when were you myopic
A: I am were glasses since I was 7 years old. Since then the power has increased until 18 yrs of age at which it became stable and hasn't increased since then.
2. What is the effect when you close your eyes and when you are in darkness
A: Not frequently but rarely did I notice a strong light entering my eyes, while I was about to fall asleep. These were not like flashes, but rather like an entopic phenomena like light entering from a strong light source while I was about to fall asleep. Sometimes I notice rings of light (very small and faint) in both eyes while I move my eyes quickly (and not slowly) in dark. Talking about flashes, I may have had flashes only two times in dark, but that was may be I was trying to look too hard for them (since I was told by the ophthalmologist to look for flashes of light and report immediately, which would be persistent). In dark or after closing my eyes, I do not notice floaters.
3. Any pain, irritation, dryness, discharge, sticky eyes in morning etc.
A: No pain, but I do have dryness in eyes (which may be due to prolonged computer usage), for which I use artificial tears frequently during the day. Sometimes there is irritation, but not much. My eyes do get hazy, after waking up from sleep due to discharge of rheum. After splashing water it goes away.
4. Please take your time and give DETAILS of anything that makes floaters better or worse
A: Floaters seem to be a bit less or faint after I wake up from sleep, especially during mornings. They get worse during the day with movement of body/head or travelling or doing physical work. They are more noticeable while looking at a bright or white background, like this computer screen or the sky or a book page. They become less noticeable while looking at dark background or under dim light. They are not noticeable during night outside, but some are noticeable under artificial light at night. In summary, anything which causes head movement for a long time worsens floaters.
I have also started having night glares and starbursts during night, that is the street lights and the head lights from vehicles seems scattered to longer rays and are unbearable causing eye strain and pain, even sometimes when looking away from them. This was not happening before, and I noticed this change and immediately reported to my doc who found no problem with my cornea or lens (front part), but may be due to vitreous gel degeneration (which are causing the floaters as well).
5. Please explain your depression
A: I have had some extremely unfortunate events for the past 2 years. Hence, it has made me a bit down on the self-esteem, especially when things are not working in my favour. So, not being able to do what I want to do has made me depressed. But, I am pulling myself up.
6. Any difficulty falling asleep
A: yes, especially since I have heard about this lattice degeneration thing and the seriousness it might lead into in future, I have a hard time falling asleep especially in full dark, since I feel I might see flashes of lights, and look out for it. But, I am slowly evolving and trying to reconcile that if it happens, I will notice it nonetheless, and won't have to look out for it.
7. Explain tongue coating
A: The coating is in the centre or middle of the tongue, white in colour - pretty much covering the whole tongue, but not on sides.
8. How does the acne get better and worse
A: Acne does get worse when I'm having less sleep or due to anxiety/ mental tension. It gets better when I had ample sleep and my mind is free from any anxiety. It also gets worse when going out in the sun or sweating.
9. What medicines have you taken in last 6 months (date, dose, potency)
A: a) Aug 20 to Nov 20, 2013 (homeopathy) - Ruta 6 and Calc. carb. 200 (40 no. globules) - Ruta every alternate day two globules in morning, Calc carb everyday twice a day - 2 globules
b) Nov 20 to now (homeopathy) - Ruta 6, Hamamelis & Arnica 200, AN 200 (don't know full form of AN, may be either Aconite Nap or Argentum Nitricum... for eyes) - Ruta everyday morning 2 globules, Ham & Arn everyday twice a day afternoon and night 2 globules, AN everyday once in the evening 2 globules.
c) Aug 20 to now - Bilberry extract capsules (for eyes; doesn't interact with any other med) - 1 cal everyday after meal
d) Aug 20 to now - Multivitamin capsules containing Lutein, Zeaxanthine, Astaxanthine, Vit A, Vit C etc. - 1 cal everyday after dinner
10. Are you on any medication permanently?
A: No, I have just started the above medications mentioned in previous answer, but did not take anything before for a long time or permanently.
11. Any other health issues
A: Not really no. Sometimes I do feel very tired and lethargic, but these are temporary.
12. How frequently do you take breaks from the screen & how long during your work
A: Usually every half an hour for about 5 mins.. sometimes in 1 hour for about 10 mins.
Thank you again Sir/Madam in taking your time out to study my case. Waiting eagerly for your recommendations and sorry for being late in following up with you!

I can't work on a case with long breaks since I have to start all over again and uses a lot of my time. Secondly, it shows your lack of interest too. Anyways, another long break like this and I am out.
Lets start on this again. I will review and revert.

I am extremely sorry about this. I understand it breaks the momentum and the continuity. Thank you once again for agreeing to look into my issue. Will eagerly wait for your response, and be prompt in following-up next time. Kind regards...

Stop all other medicines & remedies. Your symptoms are getting masked and will interfere with my remedy selection.

When depressed, I do not have suicidal thoughts, but yes I prefer staying alone and try to meditate. I do feel like going to a far off place and staying alone there for the rest of my life.
Events which led to this: I was in a good academic position pursuing my doctorate abroad, but due to some unforeseen circumstances like funding constraints from the University, I had to come back. So, this was my biggest dream like doing scientific research, and it came to an abrupt end. Moreover, family members' health is a cause of concern for me.
Do I need to discontinue the homeopathic remedies as well or just the multivitamins?

Stop all remedies also.
Explain your depression more, what other feelings do you have.
How did you feel on learning about your PhD plans falling apart.
What do you feel about the health issue of your family member.

When my PhD plans fell apart, it felt like all hell broke loose. I have always been very good in academics, and I knew that I did not deserve this. It was more a mixture of anguish, anger, dejection, challenged. However, I was all up and again and still applying to different programs. But, I did not feel like giving up or ending my pursuits and settling for alternative paths. I still feel like I have been extremely wrong-done, when many of the less deserving people are pursuing their doctorate.
Add to that another depression which also indicated towards my failing of plans was the diagnosis of my eye problems and the fact that there was no solid treatment which could guarantee a better life wrt eye health. I feel helpless, and like why me amongst all people? So, this aspect creates more like mental tension and agony, as nothing is for sure!!!
Same feeling as above for my family members - why them amongst all people? I regard this as extremely unfortunate as nothing seems to work in our favour. Same helpless and no way out. I feel like nothing further is going to work in our favour.
Please let me know if you are looking for any specific feeling or situation.

I believe your remedy is Phosphorus 200c.
Please take two doses 12 hrs apart. Just two doses. Not daily.
One dose is one pill. Dissolve the pill under the tongue.
First dose: At night before sleeping.
Second dose: 12 hrs after the first dose.
Report back with changes observed.
DONT TAKE ANY MORE DOSE OR ANY OTHER REMEDY UNLESS I TELL YOU.
FYI: US residents can get the remedies costing from $7.99 to $12.99 from various online sources, use Google search for it.
If you have liquid remedy and not pills, then put one drop of the remedy in half glass of water, stir and take one tea spoon from it. Thats one dose. Use the same mixture for subsequent doses, if required. Dont refrigerate the mixture. Put it anywhere covered, away from direct sunlight.

Thank you for your time and remedy. I just had one other question. Is it ok to stop all other remedies from today (I haven't had any other medicine since morning) and start with Phosphorus 200c tonight itself or do I need to wait for a few days? If so, how long should I wait after discontinuing previous medicines?

Also, please let me know how long should I wait after taking phosphorus, until the changes should occur and what is the pill size number - #15, #25 or #40?

You can stop all other remedies and wait for 3 days, then start Phos.
Everyone is unique so its impossible for me to tell how soon you will see some effects. I'd expect something within 1-3 days of taking remedy.
I normally deal with Boiron, don't know other pill sizes. Where are you ordering from?

Okay, I usually buy them from a homeopathic shop in our locality. These are the measurements approximately: #15 - measures 1.5 mm (millimeters)
#25 - measures 2.5 mm (millimeters)
#40 - measures 4 mm (standard size for WHP)
Should I go for #40?

Hello fitness:
I am reporting with with some changes, but they are little and not major - the floaters/clouds seem less, the flashes are a bit less. Initially on taking Phosphorus 200, these changes were marked for 2-3 days, but then again it seems the initial symptoms are coming back. Do I need to continue with the medicine or switch to another one? Please suggest.
thank you,
shayonbh
