Kind Attn: *Fitness* : Silent Reflux 11month old
HiSaw somebody else's post on similar symptoms so got inspired to post my baby's issues here. I've tried umpteen number of doctors, homeo and allopathic but found no cure yet.
Case:
11 month old baby suffering from silent reflux (which was diagnosed at 4.5 months) It started with breast refusal, then he was put on expressed breastmilk thru bottle. Now at 11 months, he has got bottle aversion. Very low weight gain, and anaemia has set in due to low intake of solids.
details as per the questions asked by you:
1. What is the age, weight & height of child: Age 11.5 months, weight 8.4Kg, Height 75cm
2. Physical appearance: Thin, Medium, Chubby : thin to medium - muscular rather than chubby.
3. How is the child mentally & emotionally normally : mentally very agile and curious like babies tend to be. emotionally quite independent and happy. he does have his times when he needs to be hugged and carried during the day.
4. How is the child mentally & emotionally during reflux/gerd: mild reflux - he makes high pitch sounds and gurgles/drools. when he is in a lot of discomfort, he arches his back and neck, screams when made to lie on back. insists on being carried on one shoulder only. will not tolerate cradle hold.
5. What are the symptoms of reflux/gerd : back arching, screaming when put on back, drooling and gurgling. milk/food refusal
6. How is the childs stool : very constipated. smelly. as he is on iron supplements, its dark colored.
7. How is the childs desire to feed : is hungry but refuses milk feeds as well as solids. He has still not started eating solids in a proper way. Wants to try different foods, but will shut his mouth tight after first bite. Milk feeds are primary right now but has developed bottle aversion lately. no amount of toys and distractions are able to get him to drink now. keeps shoving bottle away forcefully with both hands. We are only able to feed him in his sleep where he takes 150ml in one go - about 4-5 times a day.
8. Is the child teething: bottom incisors are budding, but not erupted yet.
9. How is the childs sweat (smell, where, little, a lot etc.): sweats a lot on back, head and nose. Not any peculiar smell.
As a result of not eating solids, he has developed iron deficiency anaemia. He is on iron tonic (Floradix floravital)
Look forward to hearing from you on this one.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Give him two doses of Calcarea Carbonica 30c, 12 hrs apart and report back.
Taste your breast milk and let me know how it tastes, also if possible, ask your husband to taste it too and let me know the taste.
Whenever supplements are given, the symptoms get messed up making remedy choice difficult.

Hi
Sorry for the late response. I have started Cal Carb in wet dose. I hope it was not meant to be biochemic as I have given the normal 1 dram pills. Will post progress after the 2nd dose.
About the BM - I tasted freshly expressed milk = to me it tasted a bit flat - very faintly bitter sweet. But it left a slight corrosive feeling in my throat.
Hubby found it like 'normal milk without sugar' (he meant cow milk). He felt the same corrosive feeling.
Please let me know if any more details are needed. I will report back after the 2nd dose.
Thanks and regards.

Your milk is not tasting right, normally it should be a little like non-fat cow's milk i.e. dilute & sweet.
Try the same experiment at three different times of the day and report back.
Can you explain corrosive feeling?
What are you eating on a daily basis.
Do you have any health issues.

Corrosive feeling means it felt like it had abraded my throat - the way one feels after screaming or when the throat is about to get sore from cold. When I tasted the milk, it left a mild feeling like that.
I will try tasting at different times. This was morning milk, and today also I have logged on in the morning. Will try thru today and record.
Reg. Diet, I have a normal Indian vegetarian diet of wheat (roti), occasional rice and cooked vegetables. For snacks, I make multi grain pancakes and consume with a cheese topping. This is the only dairy product I have. For seasoning, we use turmeric, onion, garlic, cumin, black mustard and thymol seeds. Not much fruit except coconut and banana. No artificial or processed additives or pre-ground spices from the market.
I do not know of any health issue that I have presently. I used to suffer from IBS and was extremely gassy - which has dramatically reduced after I gave up dairy and reduced wheat consumption. I have an odd pain here and there, but that's probably from overwork. Also had hypothyrpidism before and during pregnancy, however, recent results have come back normal too.
However, my right breast has frequent lump formation. Had got mastitis twice for which I took antibiotics and hepar sulf. Last two times I had taken phytolacca 200 for the lumps and it helped. Now I will record the taste from both sides separately when I post back.

Hello
gave both the doses of calc carb. had stopped all other meds for observation (he is given BC21 teething troubles, and colic calm gripe water for reflux) Retained iron supplement.
He did ok for most part of this period, except on two occasions when he had really bad flare-ups. I had to give him proper antacids to make him comfortable. There was severe back-arching and screaming. This is different than before when I used to give him 0.25ml of colic calm gripe water every 3-4 hours. He used to have reflux symptoms thru the day, but never so severe.
On the BM - we tasted - I found the same taste - very faintly sweet-bitter. Hubby finds it to be like usual cow milk. The corrosive feeling might be both of us tasting milk and then going on swallowing and drying our throats in an effort to confirm the taste! nevertheless, I want to try a pH test on the milk just out of curiosity.
Looking forward to the next course of action.

Progress so far:
So I noticed that his flare-ups yesterday were due to the rice porridge that he was given as meal. I steered clear of it today. And ended up having to give antacids only once when he was drooling and blabbering loudly (he usually does that when is in mild distress)
Did not observe severe reflux conditions. But today has also been the day when he has been completely rejecting milk. He has taken about half his usual amount and gone off to sleep. He's been eating solids only today. But he's been eating after some cajoling instead of the major distraction games which we usually have to play.
Now his increased solid intake is more on account of me discovering yesterday that he has now developed a sweet tooth. Earlier he used to hate sweet things and eat only salty foods. So when I used to offer him the usual cutlets, breads etc, he would turn his head away. Only yesterday did it occur to me to try out sweet things once again and check.
Anyways, would you suggest that I watch further without any further meds? I am honestly not happy about having to give him any antacids even in case of emergency. Is there any acute homeo remedy which I can turn to for reflux? He does not vomit. I think the food stuff just comes up his esophagus and goes back in causing severe discomfort which makes him wail and arch his body stiff.
Please suggest...

I can't understand anything from your feedback.
Is the child better or not.
The improvement is usually evident on all fronts i.e. mood, diet etc.

ok... I would say there is a slight improvement.
His overall food intake has been very low today and he has shown symptoms of reflux only once or twice. Moderate symptoms, not severe like yesterday. Hope this clarifies.

Report improvement in % ever since taking the dose.
If you have started anything new in these days mention that too.

Started yesterday:
> Rice cereal (stopped yesterday as it caused flareup)
> Domperidone antacid (given only on appearance of severe symptoms)
Stopped:
> Colic Calm Gripe water (was given 4-5 times a day)
> Teething troubles (BC21)
Continued:
Oatmeal cereal, banana, multigrain pancakes, iron supplement, holding vertical for half n hour after every feed, sleeping on incline.
Improvement before the dosage vs today:
> Reflux Symptoms: 75%
> Food Intake: -50% (reduced)
> Mood: same
Overall improvement: 25%

Continue to observe, if improvement continues do nothing.
If it stalls or symptoms worsen then give one more dose.

But let me ask again - is there an acute homeo remedy which I can give in case of a flare-up? I am ending up giving antacids which I did not want to in the first place. The improvement in reflux may as well be a result of antacids.
Just a thought.... Any suggestions?

This will be acute & chronic both.
If the improvement lasts longer without more antacids then that would be the proof of remedy working or not.

I have been following your Babys problem since your first post and it seems to me that there has not been any perceptible improvement in his condition so far.
For what it is worth, I shall copy my default therapy for Baby GERD which has helped many hundreds of babies as confirmed by their mothers on my website:
www.joedelivera.com
The remedy that has proved to be very effective for Baby GERD is:
Nat Phos 6x tablet dissolved in milk given immediately after a feed. Start with half tablet but if the response is not as expected, you may increase to a full tablet but you will not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours.
You may like to try to reduce the quantity of milk you give for each feed to enable baby's digestion to stabilize. You will however feed more often. It is essential that you burp baby immediately after each feed.
You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby. You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.
It is best not to vaccinate Baby till s/he is over a year old as the after effects in some cases can add to the problems with GERD.
Do not give Baby any solid food till s/he is over 8 months of age.
You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that Nat Phos 6x will help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.
Report progress in 24 hours and as often as you wish on this thread.
If you discover that baby does not respond to the Nat Phos 6x alone and this has occurred in a few cases, you will contact me again and I shall then prescribe another remedy to reinforce the action of Nat Phos 6x.
DO NOT GIVE DOMPERIDON aka Motilium

Many hundreds of mothers have used my therapy aka Joepathy to help their babies and have confirmed on my website their babys response, which is often in a few hours after the first dose.
There are a few that did not respond as quickly and if as you state, you have already used my therapy I would like to know how precisely you did so with details of the dosage and if you used Nat Phos 6x tablets and the brand.
I have added Nux Vomica 30c in the Wet dose to reinforce the action of Nat Phos 6x in difficult cases and if you wish to use my therapy you can get the pellets which are freely available although the Liquid Dilution is preferred.
I shall prescribe, if you wish me to do so, later.
