shy gsd

Hi,
I ahve a GSD who always had difficulties in going out but now is worse after 3 things: the dog trainer wanted to take her out without anybody, I took her out alone and a car backfired and my mother and sister spent 2 days away from home with the other 2 small dogs. She is afraid of people, dogs, traffic noises . her 1st instinct it to run . At home she is fine , except for people coming in . She is better in the mornings and worse in the evenings .She has bursts of energy especially at night and she drinks a lot of water in long time .When it is nearing time for her to eat she starts looking for things to put in her mouth ,like pens, paper, hairpins to call attenttion. And when she is havings bursts of energy i feel she doesnt like to be touched or to put my hand in her collar .Also in these times she digs or throws the water in the bowl on the floor and runs with it in her mouth .She eats very well and has no problems in eating .She likes most everything .She likes to play with ball and chase pidgeons and play with water . My aunt found her in a shoe box in the street when she was about 15 days old and kept her 1 week in her house and she never moved out of the box and then gave her to us. When she arrived she was hurt like if something had chewed her .If she goes out only with me she is more frightened .If she goes out with me and others and older dog she is frightened but less . She eats her own faeces but now she sometimes doesnt eat them .When it is very hot she suffers a lot and likes to sleep outside. I have the impression she feels the heat a lot.Any suggestions ? thanks a lot.regards.Miyuki

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Is she skinny or more on the chunky/heftier side?

Does she like to lick your hands and feet?

Is she worse in the sun or from sunshine?

When she grieves like if you leave her alone,is she loud and hysterical or does she get quiet and sulk?

Any skin issues? Warts, moles, irritation, ringworm, etc.

Has she been vaccinated?

When she eats, does she eat all her food or does she eat a little and then acts full?

Is she gassy, bloated, constipated, diarrhea, belching?

She is not skinny ,but she is not fat, she is a bit on the small side for her breed (german shepherd Dog) but very striking and people on the streets look at her a lot because her black is dark-coloured . She lives in a hot country _ Brazil and is 8 months old . She had 3 doses of multi-virus vaccines but not rabies yet.She eats all of her food and only stops eating after she is finished.SHe has no skin issues only some fleas (have not been able to wipe them out yet but will). Her fur is beautiful and shiny .She sometimes belches after eating but except for that no stomach problems .She is not agressive and does not bite even when you take away her food.she doesnt lick us very much but she tries to lick the elder dogs mouth .She likes to take our hands or toes in her mouth and sort of chew on them but without hurting, especially when we arrive. She is also afraid of the sea waves or the noise they make . She doesnt like strange people to touch her or strange dogs to sniff her but if they leave her alone after a while she goes to them to sniff but they must be quiet or she will be afraid and go away. She doesnt like doors . If you lock her up, she will try to knock down the door or see a way to escape and if she cant then she will wait quietly. When we go out and she was smaller she would give a wail and then run from one side to other or bark and try to knock down the door but now she is better but i notice if she is left all alone without people she will find somthing to destroy or chew .When i arrive she gives little whines .She is very intelligent and fast learner but a little stubborn and sometimes she thinks "should i do this or not?" .I tied her up and she chewed herself free .she is not the quiet and sullen type and when she is angry or feels that the other dogs have hurt her she complains .When we are out she has a habit of looking long and directly at people who pass like sort of staring or analyzing especially when she is afraid. She doesnt like cats very much .Her daily routine is something like this : she wakes up early full of energy , in the afternoon she sleeps until 4-5 pm . Then she wakes up gets her ball to play and is starting to know her time for eating so she starts looking for things to call attenttion like chewing pens .Then she eats and gets lots of energy , sometimes she gets burst of energy and runs up and down .If i take her out for a walk she is more frightened than in the morning (i think there are more cars so more traffic noise and more buses) Then around 8pm she quiets down for a little nap and then i put her up on 2nd floor to sleep with me (she doesnt want to go) and sometimes she wants to go down to 1st floor (nobody is there) so tries to knock down or open the wooden board (like a gate). If she is very contrary then she has another burst of energy and gets her water-bowl and puts her paws in and throws the water out and sometimes destroys the water-bowl and jumps on the bed and starts digging . After some time she goes to sleep on the floor , i have never been able to make her sleep on soft things (even as very tiny puppy ) , only maybe a towel if its not too hot . She is very afraid of the size of buses .If i go up to her to caress her she most of the times shows her belly

Miyuki,

Several things come to mind.

One is a weekly dose of Sulphur 200C to strengthen her so the fleas find her less tasty. Makes the coat shiny and helps with the immune system as well.

Lachesis is great for dogs who are reacting from a previous rabies vaccine. Rabies miasm. But you said she has not had the rabies shot yet. If she is jealous and suspicious this is a big indicator for this remedy. It may in fact cool her jets and help her trust people, places and other animals. They hate anything around their neck and are worse while sleeping. Prefer cool and are worse from heat.

Other remedy that comes to mind is possible Phosphorus-Tons of energy and then tire easily. Sleep a bit and then have tons of energy again. Burn out quickly like the flare of a match. Love to drink cool water and lots of it. Act like clowns, goofy, silly, large/expressive eyes, worse when alone, cannot be left alone, short attention span, forget what is learned, jumpy, easily startles, sensitive to noise and touch like lightning, thunder. Sometimes they vomit food or water immediately after eating or drinking. They are built like sprinters and walk you when on a leash. They chase their tail and snap at imaginary flies. They love to be massaged and groomed. Love to perform and be on stage.

As for training. Your dog needs 45 minutes of exercise daily. Whether it be divided or all at once. Walking, some running, chasing a ball, fetch, hiding things and letting her find them. She needs to burn off this energy so she can listen to your commands and not be so reactive to sounds and people. Start with one new thing in her routine and gradually go from there.

I have a male German Shepperd.rot mix who is very dark and very unsual looking. He plays fetch with the ball with me, EVERY DAY twice a day. I run him until he tires and shows me he is ready to rest or if I sense he has had enough. I never run him to the point of exhaustion. If I did not do this he would chew out of his pen, not be able to be left alone, not listen to commands and so on. BEST DOG only because of the exercise I give him. He is trained like a K-9 dog and can execute any command when given, immediately. GSD are very smart and need to be challenged. Teach your dog a new trick or technique and go from there. You could even with practice, hide someone and teach your dog to find that person. Makes them feel like they have a job and they do it well.

P.S.

My dogs are also given Kong's filled with treats. You can take a hollowed out marrow bone and fill it with treats as well to keep her busy while you leave. That tells her to chew on this and not the furniture. Or better yet give her a raw marrow or knuckle bone to chew on while you are gone. She needs to be kept challenged and busy. Four walls of a house or locked room are like prison to her.

AM is the best time to exercise her so she is calm all day. But if she is afraid of noise I understand.

All I can say is try. Try every day to gain her trust and keep her focused on you and not so much on what is going on around her. Always walk her on a leash, short leash, by your side, slightly behind you. Re-direct her when she pulls or gets out of line. Stay calm and remain focused yourself. Hopefully the remedies will help her calm down. Try and walk her as well if you can any place away from heavy traffic.

If she needs incentive to leave the house, fill your pocket with treats and lead her by her nose out the door with a treat. Reward her with a treat every time she does what you want her to do. After enough time of her practicing, good beahvior, wean her off the treats with praise. My GSD was taught this way and now does every command w/o any treats at all. Because he wants to earn my respect and flourishes on praise and massage.

Dogs are not humans. Their brains work differently. Find new ways to get around her current behaviors so she can do what you want her to do. Re-habilitate her mind and be creative.

She goes out in the mornings too.More in the mornings thna in evening/night since in this period she is less frightened. But what happens is that she gets so panicked that she doesnt want treats or balls or anything. She just wants to go back home and either now.. she sits or tugs me back home or i have to drag her with me (which is not good) and she is strong so my arms, back and neck hurt .There is a gate (i live in a private road which opens to a main street ) and to pass thru this gate either i tug her thru or if i am with my mother .. my mother goes thru 1st and when she sees my mother going away then she tugs me after her but if i am alone i have to tug her.I taught her to sit and down but when she panics she doesnt remember anything .If I stop then she will walk to and fro on the leash. There is no way to get her to the park, beach or quieter streets withou passing thru main road (s).When we go out she stays with the elder dogs so is alone without people but not without company.

If she is primarily afraid of noise try Phosphorus 30C one daily dose and see what happens. Phosphorus startle easily and are afraid of noise.

If she is suspicious and jealous, won't share toys, jealous of anyone else getting attention, try Lachesis 200C one dose only and wait.

She seems too warm to be a Nux dog.

When she begins to panic on the leash try your best to get her to sit. EVen if you have to gently push her bottom down into a sit. Or if she lays down even better. This is re-directing her to not run and pull. Tugging at the leash is only playing tug of war.

Saying SHHH is another good command to use if she looks like she is about to flip out or barks or growls. You need to re-direct her. It takes time. You must remain calm, always and assertive. You go first and then she goes and follows your lead.

Make sure her collar is high on her neck, right behind the ears and not low so you have full control.

The right remedy and more training and she will be fine.

You too need to distinguish if her past makes her afraid of the noise and trucks or if she is just sensitive to sound. Because if she is over sensitive to sound it must be corrected with homeopathy.

I have remebered a word to describe her : high-strung .Outside she is always highly-strung .She is not jealous or possessive of toys .

So try the Phosphorus

You can also keep on hand Passiflora Q. Dilute 10-15 drops in a small amount of water. This is calming as well for high-strung/nervous animals. Good luck!
