15 yr old dog swollen left side of face

I have a 15 yr old rat terrier dog. Weighs 9 lbs. The left side of her face is swollen today. Towards the back of her jaw including around her eye. She has bad teeth so I'm guessing a tooth abscess. She doesn't seem to be in pain. She's eating and drinking. She is very clingy to me now.
I've been very successful using homeopathics with my horses but not sure with this case. I saw an old forum post that was similar but the dogs symptoms were different. The suggestion was Calendula 200 5 drops 2xday and Myristica 200 5 drops 3x day. Grapefruit seed extract 15 drops 2x day. Should I start the above remedies or can you advise something different to try based on her symptoms?

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
if she will not allow u to touch area that is suspected as problem source--then single dose arnica..

if touching doesn't bother her..will need more info...

flashlight--look in mouth--tell what observed..
odors?

what was occurring day before noticed?

She will let me touch the area on the outside. She has bad breath but brushing with coconut oil has helped. When I look in her mouth her gum is very red by her back tooth and her tooth is loose. It looks like the tooth is going to fall out. We were not home most of the day before so she slept in our bedroom most of the day. She still has energy and is out in the area with the four children. I might need to just have the tooth extracted?
However, she's doesn't seem to be in pain so maybe I keep trying natural treatments and a remedy? I'm just not sure which remedy to try...

please explain the clingy u mentioned in 1st post?
any other changes in her behavior -?-

Usually she sleeps throughout the day. Yesterday and today she follows me. She'll doze in the room I'm in but when I go to another room she follows me and is at my feet. If I'm there long she'll lay down and sleep.

Her teeth are falling out. She's missing several and some wiggle when I brush them. One is broken. She had horrible tarter but I started brushing her teeth a few months ago and they are looking much better. The vet wanted to put her under and clean her teeth a year ago but it was costly and I was afraid she wouldn't wake up.
The mandibular and the parotid glands feel the same on both sides. The Zyomatic is where the swelling is. It is puffy right below her left eye. The lump feels hard but if I really push it will squish some. I can't feel any of her teeth in that area like I can on the right side. If you look at the pic you shared the tooth that looks loose and red gum is the large tooth in front of the zygomatic gland.

for certain---no change in temperament?

Asked husband and he agrees really no change in temperment. She still has energy, stays out with the family, is alert. The only difference is that she is following me everywhere.

best I can come up with is lycopodium

1 pellet in 4 oz water--in drinking glass--stir heavy--1/2 teaspoon dose to her-- put in her drinking bowl...stir heavy in her drinking bowl--remove bowl from her after she is noticed have drunk some...

do not repeat dose

keep notice for any new symptoms after dosing--this wil guide to next most homoeopathic med..

post back--as u see fit--as often u feel..

Thank you so much! I'll get some, try and it post back!
Do you think I could use a syringe and shoot it into her mouth? We have another dog and I know he'll try to drink it.

She is on Nexgard for fleas. She started that in April and we stop after a good freeze. Usually November. She's been on it for several years but just a few months out of the year. Is there a homeopathic to prevent fleas?? We do 3 year rabies and she is probably due this year. I'm going to see if there is anyway to not get it. She is just too old for a vac.

Okay! Her next flea dose is due middle of July so we'll just skip it. Haven't treated her yet with lycopodium 30c (should arrive today) but her face is looking better today. I've been brushing a few times a day with coconut oil and giving her 500mg vit c twice a day. Will post back once I'm able to treat her.

Today she has been panting a lot even though we have air conditioning and it's cooler today. When she lays down her breathing seems labored and she's shivering. She's still eating well (I've been making her hamburger, quinoa and peas) and drinking. Lycopodium 30c arrived today and I just dosed her about 30 minutes ago. Gave her 500 mg vit c this am and brushed her teeth with coconut oil. We were outside a lot today and she was out with us but it's only in the 70's today. I'm wondering if her time here on earth is coming to an end :'( I'll keep watching and post back with any changes.Thank you so, so much for all your help! I really appreciate you!

She also has a dry hacking cough. Usually doesn't produce anything but sounds bad and makes you think she's going to throw up. I've read in old dogs could be a sign of heart disease?

Lots of panting, shivering and coughing last night. Today she seems better. Haven't heard her cough yet today and she's been resting and acting very normal. Breathing still seems labored and left side of face is more swollen today. Taking her to the vet in 2 hours. Hoping to get a diagnosis so that I can have a better idea of how to treat her naturally along with considering their ideas.

Vet says tooth is abscessed and needs to be removed. Started her on antibiotics but vet says will come back unless tooth is removed. So, is there a homeopathic remedy that can heal an abscessed tooth and prevent removal of the tooth? Hepar Sulph?

nmbarden 8 years ago
what her behavior like?what noticed in this area? sleep?sleep noises?

can u touch the abcessed area -without her flinching?

John Stanton 8 years ago
She is still really active. She does flinch when the abscessed area is touched. She lets me touch it but will squint and pull away slightly. She slept well last night. I've found belladonna to be working well for her cough and labored breathing. I dissolved 4 pellets in a bottle of water shake 10 times and give her 1 tsp. Last night after eating she started coughing a lot and seemed agitated. Gave her belladonna and she calmed down and coughing went away. She's had 2 doses of antibiotic but face is really swollen today. Even her eye is squinting. Haven't dosed her with belladonna yet today so going to do so. 2 nights ago when she was coughing a lot when she slept her breathing was labored and she was making a wheezing noise. Last night was much better after and I gave her belladonna before bed.
