Chondromalacia patellae

Hi, I would be grateful for any advice regarding the best remedies for Chondromalacia patellae. I had it in both knees, and was mis-diagnosed as having a torn cartillage and was operated on in my right knee about 5 years ago. It took a long time to heal and, when it did, there was a new chill in the knee which had not previously been there. I saw another doctor and he told me that I had the Chondromalacia patellae and that the operation would not have been good for it. He recommended that I try an exercise bike as it is exercise which does not put pressure on the knees.
Now, I rarely have pain in the left knee. If there are any twinges of pain, they subside quickly. I have a good balance between exercise and rest and if the balance is upset, then the pain can flare up, mostly in the right knee (the one that was operated on.) It worst, the knee swells up and is hard to bend, and in this condition, I cannot walk.
I am mostly able to control the pain, but about 6 weeks ago it began again and this time is proving hard to shft. I have been eating a lot of sugar recently, which I don't usually do, and wonder if this might affect it, so the last few days have cut it out. I have also started taking spirulina as this has proven to be useful in the past, but usually needs a couple of months to take effect. I had an excellent herbal balm which contained things like cramp bark, wintergreens & gelsemium, but that it now finished and I cannot get the right herbs to make it again where I am living at the moment.
I am vegetarian.
Many thanks for any help anybody can offer.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Apply a cloth wrapped with ice on the affected area for 10 minutes. Do it twice a day.

As I understand, you have

Swelling in the knee, hard to bend, and pain in walking.

Is it a continuous aching pain? Can you describe the pain? Are you unable to walk at all?

There are many remedies for knee pain in homeopathy. To decide what is best for you, you have to answer lot of questions in detail.

Come back, if you are willing to do so.

Hi Murthy, thanks so much for the reply, I'm very grateful. I'll do my best to answer the questions.

I can walk at the moment. When it gets very bad, it swells up and I can't walk, but the swelling is low at the moment. It's just that the pain is lingering after several weeks and I don't seem able to control it with the normal methods.

It's a cold sharp pain, and it throbs. It feels to be under the kneecap.

Last noght, it did something new for just a short time, where the pain shot up my leg to the hip. It was very sharp and I felt quite faint. Fortuneately, it subsided after about 20 minutes. As I said, it's never happened before.

I'm happy to answer any questions to be able to resolve this. Most grateful for you taking the time to reply.

Did you try with ice as told? What was the result?

What makes the pain increase?

What makes it less?

Do you feel the pain while sitting/ during sleep too?

The more detailed is your response, the more are the chances of finding the correct remedy.

List out all activities that increase the pain. Similarly what posture/activities make it less?

Ice helps with the swelling when it swells up. It relieves the pain at the time of application, but doesn't stop it permanently.

It's hard to say that the pain will incease or subside with particular activites as it doesn't happen all the time. What I've found to be best is to keep a balance of activity and rest. When resting, I need to change the position of the leg every so often. So, I can keep it outstretched or crossed for a certain amount of time but then need to move it.

One thing that my knee definately doesn't like is being cramped, eg: on a bus for a long time.
The first time that the condition flared up was when I started practisng capoeira. I'd done plenty of other martial arts before, but this one is different because you constantly move up & down, so I guess that put pressure on the joints.

Other things which are often ok, but sometimes cause pain:
crouching,
kneeling,
too much or too little exercise, especially in a city,
standing waiting for too long

It sometimes bothers me when sleeping but doesn't often affect the sleep. Sitting is usually fine, except as stated above

that should read:

too much or too little exercise,
walking for too long, especially in a city

Ok.

Please procure Ledum 200c..pills.

Take 4 pills as one dose..daily..till you get some change..either significant reduction or increase in pain.

Come back when either of the above happens..in any case after a week.

OK, I'll look for that tomorrow, thank you. Out of interest, can I ask why you selected this medicine?

Thanks very much for the advice.

Most of the symptoms, you gave are common to the problem. However, the symptom of pain radiating up is unique to you. Hence, ledum is selected.

Hi again.
I am only able to find ledum here at 30D dilution. Can it be used?

Cat2 7 years ago
That is a very low potency. Which country do you live? Can't you order online?

i'm in chile but i'm travelling, no home address

DO NOT APPLY ICE.

It will aggravate the situation.your condition is indicative of vayu excess.vayu is cold

Best herbs to heal are guggul, ashwagandha, myrrh, ginger and turmeric.all warm herbs that reduce vayu

Guggul and myrrh specific to joint pain.

Use warm bandage it should help.

Are you constipated bcoz that will aggravate the pain.and are you sensitive to cold.?

It would help if you describe further how it started, your physical stats etc.

Hi, thank you for the reply. This happens sometimes but not always. I don't see the 2 things as connected. Yes, sensitive to cold and since the operation it can feel cold inside the joint.
It first started when I started doing capoeira because of the up/down movement involved. Then I was working as a tour guide and one day I was in a city which was completely under construction so all the roads were closed. That meant that I had to walk everywhere. I walked so much that day with the chondromalacia patella that my knees swelled up and I could not even bend them. It's not often that bad, but it lingers in the form of an ache under the knee cap.
Otherwise, I have a cough which isn't with me all the time, and isn't at the moment, but when it does come it can be very hard to shift. It is a violent cough.
Otherwise, I'm physcally well.

It's a bit limited which herbs I can find here, not many. Homeopathy is easier.

Cat2 7 years ago
Yes it might be easier. Objective is healing whichever way it comes. But you might want to revisit your diet atleast as per ayurveda. My best wishes.

Did you start Ledum?

gavinimurthy 7 years ago
I wasn't sure how to take the lower dosage

Cat2 7 years ago
Can't you order and get Ledum 200 c online/ in homeopathic stores in your country? Where do you live?

gavinimurthy 7 years ago
anyway, yesterday I found a homeopath who could make up the larger dosage so I have ordered it to be picked up

Cat2 7 years ago
I don't understand how anyone can 'make up' a higher potency. Your best bet is to order online.

The quality of the remedy is vey important. Why are you hesitant to tell your country of residence?

gavinimurthy 7 years ago
Sorry. I missed your earlier reply about your country and status of residence.

As long as the medicine is from authentic source, it is ok. Start taking it, once you receive it, and come back when you see some changes.
