Thoracic compression fracture 6+ wks ago

Hi. As noted in title.

- Moderate to severe pain in middle of back began after rising from stooping to pick up change on Sept. 25.
- Started with 2 doses of Sepia 30c over 2 days.
- On day 3, one dose of Arnica 30c. (Yes, should have done Arnica first and acutely.)
- Then tolerated pain until day 17
- Day 17: began series of Bryonia 6c once daily for 5 days
- Day 22: 2 doses of Bryonia 30c
- Subsequent few days: about 5 doses of Bryonia 30c dissolved in water and succussed
- Also during the period of last Bryonia doses, tried Arnicare cream (Boiron). This was the most effective thing I have done, but specifically it eliminated neuropathic pain in skin over injury. When I tried the cream again about a week ago, it didn't seem to help the deep pain.

Finally got confirmation of suspected compression fracture. (I had one 15 years ago so I know what they feel like. Now both T8 and T9 are fractured, with T9 probably new.)

Still a lot of pain. What to use next? Symphytum? With intercurrents? Repeat Arnica?

Thanks for ideas.

What makes it feel better or worse?
Can you move at all? Can you bend down? Can you walk?
And what kind of pain is it?
And do you have osteoporosis?

Thank you for your reply! Answers to your questions below.

What makes it feel better or worse?

BETTER
+ Rest
+ Sitting down, after standing
+ Rubbing, pressure
+ Lying on painful side
+ Burping

WORSE
+ Standing
+ Walking
+ Rising from sitting or lying
+ After eating
+ After showering
+ Coughing
+ Sneezing

Can you move at all? Can you bend down? Can you walk?

+ Can move and walk. Bending down is painful. I kneel or squat instead.

And what kind of pain is it?

+ I have 4 types of pain now.
(1) Aching all the way across the middle of my back if I do too much activity, especially from a standing position. That's been there since the beginning.
(2) Sharp pains shooting up alongside the spine in the middle, on either side but very predominantly the right. Can sometimes feel a twitch with them
(3) Sore, stiff muscles all around the lower chest/upper abdomen on the right side, with sensation like a belt had been fastened around the area. If I lean to the left, sometimes it feels like the muscles on the right can't stretch as far as they normally would
(4) Deep burning pain on the right that is very similar in character to heartburn, but when I do get heartburn it is definitely more toward the front and center.

And do you have osteoporosis?
+ Yes, have had that since before the original fracture in ~2004. (I am aged 67, FYI)

Start with Symphytum 30c twice a day for 7 - 10days.

And Calc phos 6x twice daily, probably for many months.(for osteoporosis)

For pain, try Hypericum 200c every hour if severe, otherwise, every 3 hours until you feel better.

You will also need Silica at some point, but we'll see how you do with above remedies.

1 dose is 2 pills or 2 drops and report back if anything changes.

Thank you so much Tui!! Would Hypericum 30c help the pain? I don't have any 200c. Can get it though, of course. Symphytum and Calc phos I can get locally at the potencies you mention and will do so tomorrow.

If I may mention one other issue for your consideration…

I have had a chronic cough for many years, not properly diagnosed. Gastroenterologist thinks it's from reflux but you know what they say, "if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail." A few years ago I saw a critical care specialist who wanted me to do some allergy testing but I stupidly didn't get around to it. I should add, I am a former smoker of many years and I do show changes of emphysema on chest X ray.

The fits start off dry, triggered by a throat tickle, and stop after I have brought up mucus a few times. Used to happen only when lying down to sleep at night, but nowadays it can strike at any time. The fits have become more frequent and more racking in recent months and I think too much of this hard coughing may have set the stage for the vertebral fracture. Since the fracture as you can imagine I have quite severe back pain if I cough from the wrong position and I am so scared of yet another fracture from the stress.

Any remedy I should add? Or one that would help my back AND the cough? (I know that's asking a lot.) Appreciate any thoughts you have about this. Thanks again!

You can use Hypericum 30c if you don't have 200c now.

Regarding emphysema, what stage is it?

And is it easy to bring up mucous?

What color and consistency?

Do you use inhalers? or oxygen?

Thank you Tui. I just looked up emphysema staging and it would be definitely stage 1. (The word terrifies me, but it is an incidental radiology finding that none of my doctors has been particularly concerned about.) No inhalers or oxygen needed.

Not easy to bring up mucus though, which is why I feel it may pose a (further) threat to the integrity of my spine. I often have to cough pretty hard to loosen it.

It is generally clear mucus I believe. I don't often look at it, usually swallow it. Not very thick. Similar in consistency to the discharge of allergic rhinitis or the feeling of post-nasal drip which I do tend to have.

Add Silica 6x twice daily.

Also, consider Caladium for later use as it is a good remedy for emphysema which was caused by smoking ( Tabacco poisoning).

Thanks! So to sum up your recommendations:

Symphytum 30c (10 days only)
Calc phos 6x 2x/d
Silica 6x 2x/d
plus
Hypericum 200ck (I got some today) as needed
and later
Caladium.

Right?

I have never taken multiple remedies concurrently before. It'll be a bit tricky for several reasons, mainly the presumed need to avoid coffee, mint/menthol (cough drops, sigh), and other aromatics near dosing time.

Can I start the Silica after I finish the Symphytum? And in general what is the minimum time interval we should observe between doses of different remedies?

FYI, I began my regimen tonight with my first dose of Symphytum.

Yes you can start with Symphytum for 10 days and see how you feel after that.

I wouldn't worry about avoiding coffee and menthol if you are a regular coffee drinker and use menthol daily.

And what antidote remedy is not coffee or menthol, but the shock to the nerve system and daily stress. So if you are not used to drinking coffee every day, and you drink coffee one day, it will be a shock to the nerve system and it may antidote the remedy, but if you are a regular coffee drinker, you will not get so much shock so you won't antidote the remedy. Plus, you are taking the remedies daily so no need to worry about antidoting them.

And about between remedies, it is generally suggested 10 - 15 minutes in between the remedies, but this too, you don't have to worry too much about it.

There are many 'rituals' in homeopathy, but I found that many of them are just 'Myth' and have no real reasons behind those beliefs.

Thanks for your hugely helpful advice. So tired of worrying about all the noise re: coffee/mint/etc. As if we need extra worry when sick or in pain, right?

I miss my mint toothpaste, too. There are very few dentifrice products with no mint at all and the one I'm currently using is repulsive LOL.

I had pretty much decided to do the Symphytum first by itself, let it take the stage and see how it performs. I cannot help being a little wary/cautious about mixing remedies although I do know that many good homeopaths will sometimes prescribe a combination. I first learned about homeopathy from an outstanding holistic veterinarian who really helped my cats for many years, and she was very conservative about mixing remedies.

The "cocktail" products especially worry me, e.g. the topicals for pain and the Similasan eye drops, tempting as those are at my age (floaters, dryness, etc) :)

Thanks again for all your help. Will update in a week or so.
