Adult Ear Complaints/Aches/Infection?

Hello. The guide said being detailed would help, so hopefully I include helpful information. I really hope this community can help me. I've been avoiding doctors for a few weeks, but the added stress of the holiday season has been pushing me more and more to Western Medicine. I would much prefer an alternative simply because I want my immune system to kick in and help combat my problem.

First, let me list my lifestyle. I'm female and 30 years old. I work at home, and am always at the computer. I don't get as much sun or fresh air as I used to. I also used to be very overweight, but lost about 30lbs and have been improving my health as life progresses. I have a slight case of asthma from when I was a kid. I do not take inhalers or use other such sterioids. (I don't want to.) I live in Northern California, and for just the past few years I've noticed my ears get congested around hayfever season (Spring and Fall), and whenever there is a flux in the air pressure. The first time this happened was spring, I went to see a doctor. I had congestion, and a dull ache in the ears. He sent me home with some sample antihistamines and a prescription for antibiotics, but never told me whether or not I had an actual infection.

I had ear complaints again in the fall season, and I went to see a different doctor. The second doctor said that she saw no fluid in my right ear, but did in my left; and she sent me home with some sample sizes of antihistamines.

My current ear complaint started earlier this month of December. It happened about the same time California got blasted with a sudden artic wind that made the real feel temperatures a lot colder than expected. After normalizing, we were met with some rain, which is where I'm at now. Over the course of this, my ears were stuffy, where pressure would increase as the days went on. Sometimes the pressure would be so tight that my ears would ache. I would often try to yawn my way to relief, which has helped a little. Sadly, I can't yawn when I sleep, so I would wake up with ears even more congested the night before.

I had ordered Xclear nasal spray, which contains Xylitol, in hopes of combating the stuffiness; but the package arrived about 4 days late, so I fear it was not much help.

A few days after, I felt congested, especially around the sinus areas (forehead, cheeks, nasal areas, and surprisingly even along the back of my neck). I took a gerneric brand of Benedryl (25mg x2) every so often, but not necessarilly consecutively.

Last night, I felt my throat itch, which is usually a sign that I've eaten curstacea, something I'm allergic to. I took 2 benedryl and went to sleep. This morning at about 6am I noticed that my lips and general lower face region felt cold and, was numb to the touch (only a bit though). I was also really dehydrated. (I had not been drinking water lately though.) I got nervous because a friend told me that his Swimmer's Ear eventually called Bell';s Palsy for 6 months. So I think that maybe my paranoia played a role in there somehow, but I'm not sure. I know I didn't eat any crustecea that night.

I was about to call to see my previous doctor, when a friend linked me to an article about homeopathic therapy and how antibiotics can degrate the immune system. It went on to say that most ear infections can be left alone, and that the body would eventually combat it.

I really don't want to see a doctor, so it gave me hope. After that, she sent me to ABCHomeotherapy, which is funny because I had visited this site last year, but never requested for help.

It's very hard to find any information on Adult Ear Infections. I want to cure this problem, as well as try to find ways to prevent this from happening again in the future, but if it does, I'd like to be well prepared. My boyfriend keeps pushing me to see a doctor, but I want to use that as an absolute last resort. I took benedryl again and am feeling very drowsy, so I hope this all makes sense. Thank you for reading.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
the modalities are more important to select the remedy.

answer the following questions;

- right or left or both.

- describe the pain if any.

- describe the discharges;

- what makes it worse and what makes it better.

- how did it start, any possible reasons or causative factors?

- what did u eat in the 'crustecea' family which disorders your system.

I know you are a very busy community. So I appreciate the reply. Thank you, Rishimba.

- right or left or both.
Both ears.

- describe the pain if any.
If the pressure is too much, it feels a little sharp, but usually I can continue to pop my ears for a couple minutes to release the pressure.

- describe the discharges;
colour, fluidity, smell etc.
There is no abnormal discharge from the ears. When I pop my ears enough, there is nasal discharge. It's clear has no smell that I can tell.

- what makes it worse and what makes it better.
Popping my ears makes it better. This fluctuating weather makes it worse. Also it gets real bad during the night as I sleep. I find that I wake up, its congested, most times worse than the night before.

- how did it start, any possible reasons or causative factors?
It usually happens whenever the season changes, usually spring and fall, or during hay fever season. This one started late november, early december. Around this time, we got a major flux in the weather. Artic winds came and went, and now it is raining off and on every other day. This affects it greatly.

- what other physical ailments do you have.
None at the moment.

- do u like cold weather or hot weather.
I prefer cold weather, because hot makes me cranky.

- how is your thirst.
I am dehydrated, but am not thirsty.

- what did u eat in the 'crustecea' family which disorders your system.
lobster, crabs and shrimp trigger my allergies, but it has not affected my ears before. Also I have not eaten any before or during this ear congestion/infection.

- what other ailments do you generally suffer from.
I am mildly asthmatic. I used to be allergic to dogs, till i got one. Now I'm just allergic to cats =)

* Since my initial post, the congestion in my ears has increased and the lower half of my face and sides of my neck feel slightly numb to the touch. The sides of my throat feel a little swollen, and now I have difficulty popping my ears. The congestion feels deeper in my ears. I can barely pop my right one. The left will not pop at all. (I pop my ears by forcing myself to yawn.)

take PULSATILLA 200C at intervals of 6 hours.

reduce the frequency just when you feel the difference.

come back after 3 days of taking the remedy.

Hi Rishimba

I'm back. Most of the pressure is gone(Yay!) ; however when i wake up in the mornings, I still feel congested behind the top end of the bridge of my nose, I think that's the Ethmoid sinus. That seems to start draining within a few hours of when I get up. In addition to that it feels like there is still some stubborn congestion in my eustachian tube. That last bit doesn't seem to want to go away.

PULSATILLA 200C should see the case through.

please continue the remedy as suggested for a few days more. take it every four hours for 2 days.

Before I continue, thank you for helping me. Progress seems to have gone 180. It's only been a day, but it seems like my ear congestion has relapsed to its previous state. Hot showers are a relief especially during the chill of the season. Should I still continue with the PULSATILLA 200C?

Pulsatilla is the only indicated remedy considering all the symptoms you have mentioned.

let me tell you, pulsatilla needs good repetition of doses. if the problem has relapsed, i would recommend PULSATILLA 1M taken at 4 hours interval till the problems subsides.

once their is an appreciable improvement in the symptoms, continue this remedy once a day till you becose totally cured.

if you dont get cured with pulsatilla, i will review the case and suggest an alternative remedy.
