Neurontin (gabapentin) and seizures

Hi, I have a friend who recently had several very severe seizures. He has been taking neurontin (gabapentin, which is sometimes used as an anti-seizure medication) for several years. To my way of thinking (the homeopathic perspective included)his seizures may have been caused just because he was taking this anti-seizure medication for so long. Does this make sense? Is anyone familiar with this drug? He says it is derived from some sort of sugar. By any chance have their been provings on this sugar or drug. What do you think? Could the Neurontin (gabapentin) have caused the seizures? It was extremely serious. He almost died three times. Thanks.
