alopecia and underactive thyroid

I am a 38 year old woman with two children. Approximately 2 year ago started to notice hair thinning, 1 year ago noticed that I couldn't loose weight when always had been able to. Slight stress during some building works, raised anxiety. Feb 2006 went to drs with concerns about weight, did tests and discovered underactive thyroid. Mentioned my hair thinning but was told that it would grow back. Went onto medication now gradually until now on 75mg of thyroxine per day. Still feel anxious, no change to weight, in fact still seem to be gaining. Used to go to the gym 2 a week but had no effect (not weight lifting). Found bald patches at the back of my head in May, went to doctors where they diagnosed alopecia areata. Since then I have lost all hair on my head, hair very slow to grow elsewhere on body. Should be every womans dream not to shave legs!! I have lost most of my eyebrows and eyelashes but fine hair still remains on face. Any ideas which I could try. Any hair regrowth I had on my head seemed to be very very fine and brittle, scalp couldn't seem to hold onto it long enough for it to grow. Now nothing is on the bald bits and it is totally smooth.

Any help greatly appreciated.
