Head tilt in rabbit - what to give her?

My rabbits head has been tilted for 4 or 5 days. For those that have had rabbits, don't get panicky - she had this once before, a couple of months ago, and even before I brought her in, my vet said she could just be having allergies. Sure enough, when the weather changed, her head tilt went away. This time, though, it's tilted so bad that she actually fell over yesterday. I started giving her pulsatilla (I've given her 3 doses now, about 8 hours apart each) with no result. Can anyone think of another remedy that I can try?

Thanks!

Karen

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
In recent past did your rabbit had any injury or suffering from some kind of Ear/Inner ear injury?

What potency of pulsatilla are you giving your pet?

Hi!

No injuries of any sort. That's the weird thing. And why did it go away the last time? Strange.

I am giving it 30C - I don't understand the potencies very well, so the 30C is all I buy for all my remedies.

Karen If there was an effect for the better with temperature change try mercurius sol, but this is a small animal so buy lower potencies like a 6x or the highest I would go is a 12c.

If not using exotics vet, do asap. NOT allergies-it's E Cunniculi (ie Wry Neck) &/or a Middle Ear Infec. Serious. Tilt can become permanent if not addressed right.

Can live ok if permanent, so don't put down, but solve-esp. if ear inf. since pain. Solve w/longterm home care, meds. Homeo. won't cure. Did vet check ears for infec. & culture anything inside? Bun needs-1)Ivermectin & Piperazine protocol used by breeders/rescuers. If disagreement-no matter. Don't need script-get at farm feed store. Pay CAREFUL attn to doses-small amts based on bun's weight. Protocol at-Barbi Brown's Rabbitry site-see Wry Neck Symptoms&Treatment. --contintinued

2)MECLIZINE 25 mg asap to stop rolling & off balance. Vet will look up dose. WIll likely be 1/4-1/2 tab. Get script. Buy a pharmacy. Not $. Don't use shelf pills becuz they have other harmful ingreds. Script pills will just be drug. --continued

3)METACAM for pain. Buns have low tolerance - continued

4) Longterm ABs. 7-8 wks. Penicillin shots are ideal for aerobic & anaerobic infection.-continued

he procaine/benzathine combo. type (called bicillin in lay terms)-not just the procaine-is best. Vet will have it, give dose & injection lessons. -continued

Breeders/rescuers use a a bicillin protocol. Doubt vet will use since vets dose low. Or, might be possible to use CHLORAMPHENICOL suspension (oral).-cont.

Either drug good if nothing to culture. Otherwise, culture will show AB to use. EC happens w/dehydration, stress. Typically due to another issue. Spread thru urine. Separate any 2nd bun

Hi!

I did end up going to the vet a day or 2 after I posted because I came home from work one day and she had a terrible eye infection.

She has been on antibiotics for a week now, and she is flipping as much if not more than before. It's excruciating watching her. How long do I put her through this before I put her down? I am more than willing to keep doing this, but I'm not the one who is in pain! I don't want to put her down if she will get better and have a somewhat normal happy life, but right now I think she must be in ALOT of pain.

Please help!

Sorry - I didn't read your posts well - I just skimmed them. I am on the phone with the vets office now asking for the Meclizine!

Thanks!

unclesoupy1 last decade
It's likely that tilt was caused by infection inside ears in the first place. Did you used Mercury?

maheeru last decade
I did not.

The Meclizine is helping tremendously with the flipping, but her head is still very tilted. You recommend the mercury for the head tilt?

unclesoupy1 last decade
She has infection in ear and eye.

I beleive she must be stinking with pus if some one goes near her ear.

What is the colour of eyes? Is there any puss coming from her eyes as well?

If so give her Heper Sulph 30 three doses

Hi

I just asked if you've given Mercury. You can give the pet Hepar Sulph as recommended by RAjendra.

Silicea, Conium might be required in future.

I have buns, have for yrs, very knowledgeable. PLEASE look up the info I've provided to learn more re: Wry Neck, Middle Ear, Barbi Brown's site. Plz don't put bun to sleep.

continued - IMPORTANT to stop the rolling ASAP w/Meclizine or bun will get an Aural Hematoma like a dog would (look it up). W/drug, bun will stop rolling that day. If stuff in ears, MUST get a culture & sensitivity test.

continued- what AB is bun on now? If Baytril, it will not work for this. Need an AB like Penicillin (procaine/benzathine combo) thawt will cross the barrier to the infection).

bungee last decade
continued- if you want to use homeo. ONLY use Hepar super low-like 3x. Will make anything inside come out-IF it can. I've been thru this & what I've advised has better chance than homeo.-plus, I have/know buns. There's no time to play around, truly. Please read/print all my posts carefully. Info all there.

continued- Are you using an exotics vet? Imperative, truly. Ask vet if he/she has the vet med book: The 5 MINUTE VETERINARY CONSULT: FERRET & RABBIT. All vets (& students) have the canine/feline book from series, & EVERY exotics vet should have the rabbit one, for reference.

bungee last decade
continued- I know alot about homeo. You mentioned you don't understand potencies well which means there are other important fundamentals about homeo. you don't know. Nothing wrong w/being a novice & wanting to learn-but bun's issue is serious, & can't be addressed by members who don't know anything about buns, their illness, physiology, GI system etc.

bungee last decade
continued- While on any ABs, buns MUST have probiotics daily because their flora is very delicate. If they stop eating/drinking, they'll have GI shutdown & die w/in 2 days from stasis & stress. Painful, frightul way to die. If vet (again, exotics vet?)didn't give BENEBAC (no script needed), he doesn't know bunnies. Give 1 gram day w/out fail. Are you up for the homecare & challenge of saving your bunny? How's bun doing?
