Dog, wont stop licking self.

Hi,

My friend's dog has always seemed to have mild allergies, he would sometimes scratch, lick his feet, and sneeze (also he is extremely allergic to beef). But the last few years as he has gotten older his allergies have gotten worse.

His occassional licking his feet worsened to licking throughtout the day, with almost no stopping. He also licks his side which is now missing hair and start to bleed from his licking. The owner tries to make him stop by calling his name, nudging him, and other ways, but the dog ignores to keep licking.
When he is outside he crawls across the ground to scratch his stomach. This will sometimes make a rash flare up on his whole underside.
The vet (non-homeopathic) prescribed medicice in the form of pills and shampoo, but they don't work.

Here is some of his traits if they can help in choosing a remedy for him.
Male.
Similar breed to Jack russle, but is mixed.
Ten years old.
Small heart murmur, since about three years old.
Vet diagnosed him with arthritis.
He seems to have small bumps under his fur which the vet dismissed.
Overweight due to owners overfeeding (They dont think he is overfed).
Surgery two years ago to for a non-cancerous tumor on the anus.
One year ago had a virus (this is what the vet concluded) which caused uncontrollable diarrhea for one-two weeks.
Afraid of bed weather.
Chases house cats in the day, but at night when he trys to sleep will leave the room if they enter it.
Likes to chase squirrels,deer.
Dislikes dogs bigger than himself.
Dislikes owner to play with other house pets, he will either chase them or run upto owner to get attention.
Dislike of strangers.
Rapid breathing while riding in car.
Chokes after drinking.
Dislikes mushy food.
Intolerence to beef, even in small amounts.
Dislike to nails being trimmed.

Can anyone also give directions on how to administer remedy to pet.

Any advice on a remedy that can lessen his allergies and over tendency to lick himself is greatly appriciated.

Thank you.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Hello,

The diagnose of the vet seems right to me. The licking is caused by the rheumatic pain in the feet (licking for a longer time is almost always a sign that the dog has some kind of pain). A homeopathic vet can give advise on the subject. The administration of remedies is simple . . . when the dog is trained (as a pup) to take medicine. In other cases just put the globules/tablets as far as possible in the throat, close the mouth and rub the outside throat till the dog swallows the remedy. Liquid remedies can be administered by putting some drops in a spoon with some water, just poor it in the dog’s mouth and most of it (enough) will de swallowed.

Hi again,

If you search this very forum for arthritis and arthrosis, you find more than enough answers I think!

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. For licking the feet, can you tell me a remedy for arthritis (and what potency and amount). I do not know too much about homeopathy, and even using other posts I would not know which to choose.

What about his licking his side, and crawling on the ground to scratch? This seems to be caused by allergies.

Thank you.

Hello,

For arthritis I will try to find a remedy but please be patient. For dogs it is difficult as the character and the mental state of dogs is hard to judge.
Licking the side can be caused by allergies but it also can mean that the health of the skin is bad and causes itching. You can try to give the dog some vegetable oil every day (e.g. olive oil, sunflower oil). Start with just a few drops in the normal food and raise the amount of oil very gradually to a small dessert spoon (5 or 6 ml) every day. Be careful with the amount of oil because it can cause serious diarrhea when the dog gets too much too soon. When the condition of the skin is the problem then this will help in about two weeks time.

I found a very useful web address for your problem. This forum doesn’t allow web addresses. Please send me your e-mail address.

Hi,

Try Ruta Graveolens 6x three times a day. It will help the arthritis in the dog.

STOP applying shampoo or soap. Do NOT wash the dog with anything else but clean water!!
This is the best advice for all dog owners. All shampoos (also special shampoos for dogs or shampoos from vets) destroy the healing and cleaning capacities of the skin. When you start washing dogs with shampoos, the dog will spread an awful smell when it is raining.

You can give Sulpher 30x once a day to the dog to improve the general condition.

Hi,

His skin does seem to be worse since his owner started bathing him more frequently.

Hi,

I will have the owner do what you instructed.

Is it important how much time there is between giving doses of Ruta and Sulpher?

Bathing is really the cause of that 'wet dog smell'?, thats funny, pet owners bath their dogs with shampoo so they will smell better. Should he countinue to take the allergy pills and to be sprayed with a sort of topical treatment, both vet prescribed? Will these interfere with homepathic remedies.

Thank you.

Hello,

Do not give two remedies at the same time, wait at least one hour before giving the second remedy. Ruta can be given three times a day, Sulphur only one time a day.

It is hard to judge whether the allopathic remedies will interfere or not. Strong aromatic oils will certainly. It seems to me that continuing the vet’s medicine is the best you can do.

Washing dogs with soaps and/or shampoos cause the bad smell. It also causes the need for more washings! When you start washing dogs, you get into a loop. Washing, bad smell, washing, bad smell etc. etc.
The producers of shampoos are laughing and gathering money.

no pills or spray during treatment--gives cleaer view of response to remedy....

Hi,

Stopping the vet prescribed shampoo, pills, and spray, should not be much of a problem since they are producing no results.

The owner is giving small amounts of olive oil to the dog.

I have not been able to get the remedies near where I am, so I am ordering them.

Thank you.

Hello,

It has been a week since we spoke about the dog of your friend. How is the situation at the moment?

I think that I can address that skin allergies faily easily. There is a comprehensive product full of all natural homeopathic ingredients that help with the skin and coat. I can't adress it here. Please go to my user profile, click on my website, once there you will see a gmail address in the top right hand corner. Email me and I will get the info to you. The website I am directing you to is my personal home business. It has nothing to do with the product I would like to send you information about.

As for the arthritus, ask the vet about Metacam. Sorry but, it's a prescription. It just the best thing out there that I know of.

TLMaH,

Metacam has nothing to do with homeopathy. It is an allopathic pain killer that can't cure any problem, only lessen the pain in some cases.
After a (short) while it stops working and you will be where you are now but with less money.

Hi,

He has been given Olive Oil for almost two weeks,
Sulphur 30x once daily for about eight days,
and Ruta 6x three times daily for about eight days.

There is not a lot of noticeable improvement with his allergies.
For arthritis, I am not sure how to tell if it is better other than him not licking the joints. I suppose his activity level is the same.

jdavis thank you, although, I would like to find a homeopathic remedy.
If the owner decides to start using shampoos again, the one you recommend may be better than what he was using.

Thank you for your concern and reponses.

I have a dog suffering with the exact symptoms described in this post. He's a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix. I haven't started him on any of the recommendations yet as I am still in the research stages. I have switched his food umpteen times trying to avoid certain ingredients etc. I have bathed him, when it gets really bad, in an oatmeal bath. I make him lay down with a cold cloth on him. I have used polysporin itch lotion. nothing seems to help. He has good days and bad though. He too licks incessantly and uses his front paws to push backwards when outside. It gets so bad sometimes that his whole tummy scabs! infact, I can barely let him outside without supervision! I am constantly on him and this can't be good for his spirits let alone the pain and suffering hes going through! I still don't know what is causing it. I rarely bathe him. Maybe 2-3 times a yr. I'm not too sure if its seasonal. I have no idea. I have another dog in the house who is fine so I do konw that it's not fleas or ticks. Recently, I have heard that yogurt and unpasturized honey (1 tsp mixed-daily)was helpful and also sulpher as this post suggested. I was wondering what the outcome was and hoping to get some current advice.
