strep 'g'

I had problems with my throat for around 5 months when someone finally decided a swab might be a good idea. I became so unwell I began to think that maybe I would have to spend my life like it. When strep group 'g' was finally diagnosed I was given antibiotics. Almost 18 months later I still feel unwell. My tonsils have shrivelled to nothing, and are still a little red and occasionally become infected. I get quite bad pain behind my tonsils and down my neck at the front, my head aches and I feel quite confused and generally unwell. I also have a problem with my ear since contracting this. These attacks occur every 4 weeks or so and last for 1 - 2 weeks. I get a couple of weeks where I feel okish then back it comes. Can anyone help me get out of this horrible cycle? I think my Dr. just thinks I'm neurotic. I think maybe because it took so long to diagnose what was wrong the infection got such a strong grip; or has galloped on, that now I just can't get out of it's grip. Many thanks in advance. Ali

very interesting thread. Can you tell me what you see in relation to your tonsils. Are they pot marked? (looks like puss filled or covered over sores)
I have a similar condition that you describe.
Although I have had Three culture swabs done all came back neg- for strep.
My blood work came back good and I even had an aids test to be sure. (neg- also)
I really hope we can figure this out.
TIA,
CG

Curious George,

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry to hear you seem to be having similar problems. Interesting that you're male as I'm certain my Doctor is basing his reaction to my problems on me being female. I also had another swab taken which came back, like yours, neg for strep. My blood tests were ok also. I also had antibiotics. Do you also have the other symptoms that I mentioned?

In answer to your questions re. the appearance of my throat - Yes I get little white lumps that look pus filled, uneven surface on my throat and where my tonsils once were I now have little circles which are much darker than the rest of my throat.

Do you mind me asking in which Country you are located? Just curious to see if we are being treated the same due to location.

I am in the USA. The only treatment I have had so far are antibiotics. The first and second run was Amoxicilian. I just finished a one month cycle of dyciclin (spelling?) with no improvement.
Can you tell me when you get headaches where are they located? Lately my headaches are located at my left temple. I also have a tender spot on my neck a couple of inches below my ear that does not radiate anywhere else.
Where are you located?

I'm in the U.K.
When my problems first started, and before the first swab was taken, I had quite severe pains right at the base of my head at the back. When I get a bout of the throat and neck pain I always get a really 'foggy' head with a headache that can be anywhere. Often just seems to be an overall vague throb.
Your neck pain is interesting. Mine is generally on one side a few inches below my ear. Occasionally I get it on the other side instead and less often on both at once.
There must be an answer out there somewhere for us both.

aleyne last decade
Aleyne, can you tell me more about your neckpain? So far mine has only been on my left side just below my ear. But I do not think that mine is muscle tissue. I say this because it is not irritated by moving my head from side to side or front to back.
My pain seems to be in the nerve. It is also causing me to have a headache at my right temple.
I am going to try and see my doctor soon. I will keep you posted.

Hi George,

Your neck pain sounds similar to mine as I don't have any problems moving my head/neck, just discomfort because of the inflamation that I know and feel below the surface. When at it's worst it's very painful to touch though.
I expect like me you've done searches on the Web to try and find a solution. I did find that on once site it said that there was less known about the 'g' strain than the more common 'b'. Guess that doesn't help us much.
Good luck at the Dr's. I have to go in a week or so again. At least this time I can say I've found someone else in the World who is having similar problems caused by having had strep 'g'. Really hope you get some real help and a solution this time.

Hi George,

How are you doing? Do you still have problems? Hope not. I do. Have had 3 bouts since Xmas. Had more blood taken a couple of days ago, another throat swab and am booked for another chest X-ray.

Have been given a low dose anti-depressant for 'anxiety'. Argued the point and objected to taking this type of medication as I know I'm only anxious because no one can solve my problem. (sigh)

My son was diagnosed last week with Strep G. He was sick all last winter, had every test under the world. Blood work came back fine. Had a bone biopsy. Finally an ENT this summer swab him and let the culture grow. He tested postitive for Strep C. He has had another Strep C positive result this fall and now has Strep G. He doesn't run a fever but aches so bad all over, especialy his neck and lower back and legs. He is 10 years old. Last year he hurt so bad he was crawling around the house in Feb. This time it took me 10 days to get into the ENT. He was hurting sooo bad he was barely able to walk again. He has been on Augementin ES since Thursday. He is alittle better. Does anyone know how to cure these odd streps. Seems like he is off antibiotics for about a month and is back on them. They have tried Augmentin, then 20 days of Augmentin and now Augementin ES. If anyone knows anything please help. His tonsils are round balls, very pitted. He complains that his throat hurts but it never really get significantly red. Has headaches and muscles aches that Tylenol and Motrin doesn't touch.

Hi Lanalou,

So sorry to hear of your son's problems. It's rotten for a 10 year old to suffer that way.

I still haven't solved my problem although I visited my sister for a couple of weeks and went to see her Doctor. I didn't get any further apart from arthritis being ruled out.

If I discover anything that might help your son I will definitley let you know.

Good luck.

Thanks, Aleyne. We saw a rhumetoid (spg?) arthritis doctor last year. He determined that Brock's pain was not in his joints.. He thought Brock had bone pain. That led to a bone bioposy, which was negative, thank goodness, but we are no closer to a solution. We saw an infectious disease doctor last week. I don't look for him to find anything but . . .???? What does your doctor say about these odd streps? The infectious disease doctor told me strep c or g are nothing and shouldn't cause any trouble but that is the only test that comes back showing anything. I though maybe it affected people differently. One site on the web talks about people having serious side affects from strep c and g. What do you know????

I was in to see a new family doctor last week and talked with him about my recurring sore throats over the past few years. I get strep about twice a year I would say, but sometimes I don't go to the docotr for it so I am not sure if it is always strep per se. He performed a throat culture and today called with the results. I was positive for strep g and he thought it was kind of odd. I had no symptoms while I was there, so the test was purely to find out if I was a 'carrier' of strep or not. However, the week before I went in to the doctor I had a swollen throat with puss and redness...but no pain really. He didn't reccommend an antibiotic becuase I am really having no symptoms, but after reading this forum I am beginning to wonder more about strep g. Has anybody discovered anything additional about strep g? My family has a history of auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The last blood test I had my ANA factor came back on the high side of average, which could be a sign of a creeping auto-immune disease. Is there any correlation? I have raynaud's disease (poor circulation) and a flexible skin and joint disease as well. Sometimes I feel arthritic in my hands or have neck pain, but I am not sure if it is related at all. Thanks for any input.

Hi Becky,

Sorry to hear that you are also experiencing problems. I can't help any although I still have the problem and have now developed tinitus and am certain it's as a result of the constant whatever it is that gets me.

I went to see a consultant a couple of weeks ago. More blood tests but he didn't really come up with anything. He said he'd write after the tests so I'm still waiting.

I think there is something wierd about the strep 'G'. You can find out very little on the net and on some sites it says little is known. I think it's far more vicious than it's given credit for especially if not treated quickley enough - as in my case. I think it spreads itself elsewhere in the body. Of course this is just a pure amateur's non-medical opinion and I do have to admit it's taken me over a bit. I have to fight to keep it at the back of my mind and not dwell on it or else it really depresses me, which it did do quite badly at one time.

I really wish you luck and will post anything I think might help.

Aleyne

Hi Lana,

I hope Brock's doing better. I'm hoping that maybe a child with similar problems will get sorted out quicker than we adults have been.

To all those who have had Strep G or C,

Brock got his tonsils out on April 22, 2008. He is completely better. He said his pain continually lessened each day and is no longer in pain at all. His blood pressure is slowly coming down (125 vs 152), he had an ultrasound of his heart and a kidney test to make sure there was no permanent damage, which there wasn't. Lucky Brock! Things that I can help you with:
1. Strep C & G have to be grown out, usually doesn't show a positive test result until the 3rd day, which is longer than most cultures are grown out.

2. Dr. Darcy Folzenlogen, at the University Hospital in Columbia, MO helped Brock. She is wonderful!!!!!

3. Getting Brock's tonsils out made all the difference. The ENT said they did not look abnormal or anything when they took them out but he is all better. The ENT forgot to send them off for test so that was disappointing because we were hoping Brock's case could help other people. If I can help you in anyway, let me know. I hope you bet better soon. I know I felt like giving up, and no one really listened or tried to help until Dr. Folzenlogen. Don't give up.
P.S. By the way, Brock's blood test were almost always normal, 32 tubes of blood, but Dr. Folzenlogen ran a tiger strep test that was slightly elevated, but with his rising blood pressure, she believed me he was in pain. Keep looking, someone can surely help!!!!

Also Keeflex, seems to be an antibiotic to give some relief, they were going to keep Brock on that for a year, but we decided we had nothing to lose by taking his tonsils out and tried that and it worked.

lanalou last decade
I have been told by a specialist that I should get my tonsils out because of my recurring sore throat problems, but other doctors have told me not to worry about them. I think I will end up removing them eventually and hopefully that will solve my problems as well. I am actually allergic to keflex, but I don't think the antibiotic really matters. Thank you so much for the information and I am glad to hear that you have solved the problem!

Lana,

What wonderful news! You must be so relieved. It sounds now as if Brock will continue to gain his strength back.

Thanks for letting us know. It's so nice and encouraging when you hear someone has come out of the other end of the dark tunnel. Your peseverance has really paid off. Just our of curiosity how did you find Dr. Folzenlogen? did your Doctor refer you?
