Thanks for the info, Sabra. I am finally feeling like I have some control over his illnesses thanks to using the homeopathics. Linda

My son is still seeming to be better but he did seem to have more runny nose and cough last night and this morning than the day or so before. It is a little thicker discharge first thing in morning and then clear in small amounts the rest of the day.
I am starting to wonder if he is having this ongoing cold, the same one, that keeps coming back and it really isn't going away when I think it is.
I think I am keeping the more serious symptoms (wheezing, rapid breathing, and fever) from coming on but that he is still at risk of developing them because he has the runny nose that keeps returning. As I said, it seems better, but not completely leaving.
Am I expecting too much for the symptoms to leave and not come back in a few a days?

You are not expecting too much. Homeopathy really works well if the remedy is correct.
Now that some symptoms are changing, how many doses of Ars Alb has been given?
What about the green mucus, better/worse? Color of face, activity any better as if getting well or not? His disposition?
Your worry will affect the children. Be matter of fact acting and smile encouragement to them. Sabra

Sabra, thanks for getting back with me. I'll answer your questions now.
Doses of Ars Alb - Yesterday he had two doses in the first half of the day and then one before bed. Today he just had one this morning. He has not had anymore doses today.
Green mucus - just first thing in the morning the last two days. The rest of the day is occasional clear runny nose.
Face color - it is red again. Kind of a splotchy red. He also had had dry bumpy skin on legs arms, stomach which today appeared a little red. He has had this for a couple of weeks and I am thinking it was after eating peanuts (can't remember if I reported this earlier or not).
Activity - his colds rarely change his activity level unless he gets a high fever. He has had normal activity the last couple of days.
Disposition - mostly happy except at the expected times--tired or hungry.
I think overall he is better, but the red face causes me to wonder if it is coming back.
Thanks so much for your help and encouragement.

Please avoid peanuts and peanut products. Watch labels to read ingredients. Many things have peanut something.
The red face has me searching. Several remedies have red faces.
Is the mucus loose or stringy? Is the green like a plug or running?
Stop worrying about it coming back, just watch and report and we will help asap. Blessings, Sabra

Mucus stringy. Not sure about plug or running.
Also, yesterday am he was very thirsty.
Today, so far, no runny nose but a loose cough. Red cheeks.

Could bananas be an allergen? He hadn't had any for a few days and then had some the day the red face re appeared.
lmhoopes 2 decades ago
If Bananas gave a suspicious response, he may also be sensitive to Kiwi fruit and avacados. They are in similar family of the rubber tree. So, then, is he sensitive to latex??
This does not actually mean each and everyone, but I gave the list as a check in case you remember something else connected. Wait a few days and give half a banana for a test. Blessings, Sabra

Sabra, I haven't noticed any latex sensitivity. Is that mostly in medical safety gloves?
Also do you think we should just get him tested for allergies to be sure? It is quite expensive I understand, but if it will help his health . . . . . Maybe it would help to have a definite answer if that is what allergy testing provides.

You are a very watchful mother. You need not spend money needlessly.
Most mothers are quite able to notice things that are not setting well with their own child.
I found out real quick that my son could not eat anything green. He was not sensitive to peanuts though. He practically lived on peanut butter. When I insisted he try other things and eat as normal as possible, I had to "reward" him with his security blanket....The famous peanut butter sandwich!!
I have confidence that you know what you are doing. You are just under so much stress right now. It can't last forever....it just seems like it!
I am thinking that he may need PULSATILLA if the Ars Alb does not continue to do well. It is a remedy with green mucus and it has symptoms that keep changing. Blessings, Sabra

Interestingly, today his nose ended up not running at all and his face is not as red although the rash on his body is red in some parts.
I will see how tomorrow goes and perhaps try the pulsatilla if some symptoms return and it seems like a change is needed. However, in spite of the return of some symptoms I am beginning to think that the Ars Alb has helped the best because his symptoms have not been as severe this time.
Oh, and by the way, my daughter seems to be doing better and I have consistently felt much better for over a week now. I am thinking that the whole foods supplements for thyroid and adrenals were helping and then the UTI and allergic reaction to sulfa just knocked me back down again. I am hopeful that the sulfa is out of both of our systems now. I feel better than I have felt in probably the whole 8 months of my daughter's life.
Thanks. Linda

Sabra, thanks for the info on remedies to start with. I have started doing some reading too and find it all very interesting and seems to make sense and go along with things I already have in place.
I have been observing some things about my son that I always thought were just him and not really anything that I could help him with or even needed help.
However, the last week I haven't given him the Ars Alb as often. Maybe once a day or not at all for a couple of days depending on what is going on (cough, runny nose).
I noticed that his bowel movements returned to a loose, sometimes slimy consistency once he wasn't taking the Ars Alb. I had always thought this was normal for him, until he was taking the Ars Alb and had more formed stools.
Also, his sleep patterns seem to have deteriorated, refusing to take a nap even when very tired. He has never just laid down in his bed and napped. It's always been falling asleep in the car (or stroller when younger). But lately that hasn't been working as well and he needs to nap because he does things that he doesn't do any other time when he's over tired and they usually involve not minding my husband and I, temper tantrums and hurting himself for trying to do something like standing on chairs, etc. Also nighttime sleep has been slower to come by some nights.
The other symptom is the red face which comes and goes. I am thinking it comes sometimes after a meltdown or tantrum. But not always.
So my question is, are all these symptoms related to the same thing as his respiratory problems? I was stopping the Ars Alb when I noticed the cough and runny nose was gone, but I am thinking I need to include more symptoms in my observations and continue to give it if he has loose bowel movements and isn't sleeping as well. Is it okay that he has been taking it for a few weeks now?

You are definately learning to see more symptoms. Now you are picking up more physical and much more emotional symptoms....great work!
As time passes you will find that the emotional will be a deciding factor in many cases.
This is why a materia medica will begin with mind and then head, etc.
Yes, all things are related. Some are considered more important and others less. His age is quite important as the "terrible twos." Then one has to decide if it is this, or teething, or something else.
Children are usually easier because they grow to a certain age in similar growth process. Including childhood illnesses. So it is easier for us to diagnose with less symtoms. Now, as his mother, you notice more.
Look at his teeth and gums. Is there redness? New bumps of new teeth trying to come in. Even teething will upset the bowels.
Knowing your son, decide if he is one that runs high fevers or is a lower fever child. This is a deciding factor in some cases.
If mothers can view the "illness" as a condition of the body at the moment, this will help with your diagnose also. Trying not to "name" something is very helpful. One looks at the symptoms more closely.
In the book or books you have, look up "red face" in the index and then go to the Repertory to read the suggested remedies. The italic ones are the ones most used over the plain text. Read the particular symptoms and compare. One can eliminate quickly this way. I was unable to find the red face, but still looking.
If it is teething, check CHAMOMILLA
CARBO VEG
CALC FLUOR
CALC PHOS
BELLA
STAPHYSAGRIA, just to name some. Decide if ears hurt, Jaw.
NOW, here is the most important part...Learn not to "lead" the child. Do not say "what's the matter." "does your teeth hurt?" Oh, do you feel bad?" ALL these questions make the child more of a baby, looking for attention. Poor dear, poor me!
Say, "tell me about what is disturbing you." Tell me how you feel." What about your ears?" Can you tell me how your mouth feels? Your tummy feels? Do you want to tell me something?
You are asking for information, not trying to draw attention to "being sick." This also teaches communication that is not anxious. Matter of fact attitude.
Enough for now, good work. Read up on the remedies. Tell us more and we will try to help with the new symptoms.
Blessings, Sabra

I am inclined to think it is not teething as he has had loose bowel movements pretty regularly for several months. I didn't get a good look at his gums today. Will try tomorrow and also do more reading about the remedies.
My son continued with the same symptoms again today (red face, no nap, restless/reckless behavior) and had a bit of a cough and after being outside, a runny nose.
I also wanted to get feedback on something for myself. I started out yesterday with a bit of a scratchy throat. Then last night I was awake restless in the middle of the night. Some of this was due to excitement and nervousness over making an offer on buying a house. I had a worse scratchy throat and sneezed and stuffy nose.
By this afternoon I had a sore throat and when I talk my voice is very low in pitch and I have laryngitis, but not to where I can't talk.
I was sensitive to noise and couldn't wait for piano lessons to end (my husband teaches from our home) and kids to be in bed. So I was also irritable.
I took hepar sulph twice this evening two hours apart. After the second time I started to feel better. My throat is not hurting as bad and the laryngitis seems to be breaking up. I am coughing more now. My voice is still low-pitched. My temperature is about 99.5 and I am very thirsty although it may be from my dinner.

I feel that NITRIC ACID 30X would be beneficial for you at this time if the Hepar S. does not suffice.
Finally found the "red face" that fits your child. As he is not a "high fever" child and plays between complaints, I think FERRUM MET 30x would be good. Look it up.
Do not be alarmed by EVERY symptom. One does not have to match perfectly. After awhile, one learns the general "type" of the remedy.
Let us know. Blessings, Sabra

Hi Sabra, thanks for the information. I have a question about your suggestions. The ferrum met does not take care of the breathing problems, which are not an issue right now, but if he were to start wheezing and shallow breathing is it correct to say I would give him another remedy like Ars Alb again? The Ferrum Met seems to cover his current symptons well, so I will try it.

In my book it says Chest oppressed, breathing difficult. Cough dry , spasmodic.
The book does not need to say wheezing. Oppressed is much similar.
Remember, we are not saying he has asthma.
When I raised an asthmatic, he truely had asthma attacks. (episodes) He was fine inbetween. He hardly wheezed. He had food allergies that were the cause most times. He also had two older brothers that were a pain in the ... to him.
You can always go back to AA, but we are trying to find the "best" remedy for him and this is how one must do it sometimes.
Especially when I am here and you are there.
Blessings, Sabra

Oh, by the way, Sabra. I looked for the ferrum met today and it wasn't at the place I normally buy the homeopathics. If I am unable to find it at this other place, would any of the other ferrum ___ work? They had ferrum phosphorus, I believe.
