Hi Fernanda

The best you can do is relax, and let it heal and fade. I've done the sandpaper thing a couple of times since I posted earlier in the year and while it hasn't helped my scar much, the redness did disappear after a few weeks.

Maybe, just maybe, the scar's a little better but I'm not sure. It's certainly no worse than anything my derm has done to my scars!

Its been 2 years since I read this. This works, I tried it twice the first time failed. And the skin near it bled, left me with a line scar barely noticeable.

The first time I did it too harshly and was trying to get rid of it all at once. This is a follow up process that has to be done in several sessions.

You have to sand it down very gently with the file (I use metal file). Then use aloe vera or vitamin E, I use vitamin E.

You should see a difference after the 3rd, 4th time and almost completely gone on the 7th depending how deep the scar is.

Always moisturize never use any drying medication on it.

So I've had pretty bad acne scars for the past 3 years since I had gotten off accutane. Not having acne was great, but the scars were KILLING my self-confidence.

Well, I researched a lot about dermabrasion and how it works as well as how scars tissue forms. Before anyone tries this procedure, I recommend doing a lot of research too.
I am not a doctor yet (in school for it :]) so I cannot recommend anything, but I will let you all know what happened.
I figured the differences between doing the dermabrasion with a doctor and by myself are the expensive cost, the guarantee that it would benefit me, and the fact that the doctor had been trained specially to do it.

Now, I'm not an unintelligent person. I consider myself pretty clever (then again I had to with my scars... I had to find SOME good quality in myself) albeit what some would call insane... I figured that even if I messed up, I could always just end up paying the stupid cost for real dermabrasion.

Right before I started this self-procedure I decided to google 'nail file scars' and came here. Davestar and Sonel's words of wisdom on this subject put the last nail in the coffin and I took an emery board to my face.

I sanded the right side of my face down, half of my right cheek, very lightly to the point where it was raw and a few spots of blood were where the scars used to be.
That was VERY GENTLE. 3:00AM day one.

The healing process began like this. The next day (3:00 PM of the same, first day), where the scars were, my face had brown and red spots. It looked a lot like sunburn. I applied moisturizer and aloe lotion constantly to keep it hydrated and cleaned it well with things that would prevent infection.

3:00 AM of the second day, the spots had begun peeling off and revealing pink, smooth, skin. Now, all the scars were not gone... i'd say roughly around 50-75% better. I can look at myself in the mirror from one side without wanting to vomit due to what I see in the mirror.

3:00PM of the second day, my skin on my face looks healthy and young. The pigmentation slowly turned back into my normal skin color throughout the day.
It was very similar to the healing from a sunburn with the constant peeling.
Now, I credit this all to the fact that I sanded down very gently.

Now for the details of the left side of my face.
I had a lot of deeper scars on the left side of my face so I decided to sand deeper. I used microdermabrasion lotion and then got to work.
My face had not started bleeding, but again there were the pinpricks of blood surfacing where the scars had been.
12 hours later, I continued moisturizing and using aloe vera. The entire side of my face was really red, just as red as I would expect from having a real dermabrasion.

36 hours later, the skin around my deeper scars are flat but very red. I assume the red will disappear just like the other side and leave the smooth, pinkish skin that will slowly return to normal pigmentation. I will keep you all updated.
I feel that I may have went too far and instead of helping my scars more by going farther, I may have just delayed the healing process.

I believe that the best way to do this is the middle ground between dermabrasion you would get at a doctor's office and microdermabrasion. Don't go too deep otherwise the healing process will take longer and your results may not be as good as mine. Just do it gently and over the course of a few months... depending on the severity of your scars.
Remember, this is in place of thousands of dollars worth of procedures from a dermatologist. Don't be too harsh on your skin unless you're crazy like me (and even then you shouldn't).

(Finally, as an addendum, please keep in mind that I am bipolar and that this was at the peak of a manic phase. Any sane person would not try this. People may think you're crazy if you tell them that you took an emery board or a nail file to the face.)

(and as a second addendum, I wrote all of this at one time while skipping around, so if I missed anything, feel free to ask any questions. I will probably be posting with updates.)

It's been over three weeks now, and I have to say that the end result is between 40-50% better than what it was initially.

As others have said before, it may take multiple treatments for a real good and definitive improvement.

Take precautions while doing this. I don't recommend it. I am not a doctor. This is just an explanation of what I did and the results.

I am confident in myself now and don't feel like I need to cover my face with my hair anymore.

how would this remedy help with rolling scars
michelleoo 7 years ago
Look up Dermarolling and Dermastamping. They're forms of needling.
It breaks up scar tissue easier than this method.

There's lots of information on certain Acne org message boards.

I'm going to start this procedure over again because of the 2 new scars I got from exfoliation (guys dont NOT exfoliate with granulated products)only with liquid types. I will keep you posted on my new procedure.

Theres an improvement on my scar it seems to have gotten smaller and close up quite a bit, but not completely gone yet, I've been sanding it down and using polysporin, honey and ice for 3 days now. I think by next week there will be more improvement.
