Dental Chemical Reaction/Allergy?

Hello,

52 year old Male.

I had some bonding done on a front tooth on 5/15/12. Immediately following procedure I had:

-Chemical taste in mouth
-Mild burning/irritation sensation on roof of mouth just behind front teeth; on forward part of tongue; throat area(which became more pronounced with time).

-M.D. cannot see any redness/inflammation or physical problem (hence 'I'm crazy'; or 'There is nothing wrong')

-I had dentist remove as much of the bonding material as possible (white composite filling material), yet symptoms persist.

Very caustic chemical used in the 'prep' process:

-Phosphoric Acid (which got in my mouth, and I had to rinse)

Bonding Material:
-Composition based on Methacrylates.

Sealant used post-bonding(dentist said a very small amount):

-Diurethane Dimethacrylate; Bis GMA; Sodium Monofluorophosphate.

Not only upset with the symptoms, but dentist took a bit of actual tooth when removing bonding, which is a cause for emotional/upset/ anger(occasionally).

Seems to worsen as day progresses/evening.

Tendency toward catastrophic thinking/anxiety/stress/depression.

Had been diagnosed with colitis, but in remission and actually healing. Was in good mood before this happened. But have a tendency for procrastinating; putting things off; cherishing the anticipation of something rather than following a project through to completion; being in the doldrums; Am not working currently so not a lot of structure in my life.

Am taking Thyroid hormone replacement medication.

Vegetarian.

I do work out, but sporadically.

Sleep very well, a few months ago I had a problem with waking up early in the morning and not being able to go back to sleep, but not currently. Go to bed around 11P and wake up around 9a.

Possible hypothesis?:

Exposure to initial prep (Phosphoric Acid) irritated the skin, which is now being further agrivated by the Sealant (Bis-GMA/Diurethane Dimethacrylate, which is bonded on and hard to get off).

Or is it possible to have been 'exposed' to a chemical and the taste and resulting symptoms can linger this long?

Thank you

Dear Dr. Nawaz,

Please forgive the tardy reply to your questions:

1. ID?
2. 52 year of age.

4. Single

6. 6’ 0”

8. Southern California/Moderate/Warm

a) Sour, chemical-like taste in mouth; dry mouth; mild raw irritation of tongue, roof of mouth just behind front teeth, throat. No outward appearance of anything physically wrong/no redness. This occurred after dental procedure in which phosphoric acid was used as etching preparation and got in my mouth.
b) I also have colitis and irritable bowel syndrome which are in remission. The colitis is complicated my areas of dysplasia which are thankfully regressing.
10. a) Since 5/15/12, the day I had bonding done at dentist – chemicals used: phosphoric acid (which got in my mouth); Bis-GMA; and other acrylates.
b) colitis since approx 1992 only diagnosed properly since 2008.
11. Non-Diabetic
12. I like sweets but don’t indulge. On strict vegetarian/non-gluten diet due to colitis (in remission). Desire meat dishes, but don’t indulge.
13. Average.
14. Dry tongue; slightly irritated; taste has a sour, chemical-like ‘tang’ to it. Ever since the dental procedure on 5/15/12 food seems to ‘react’ and creates a bitter taste.
15. BP: Normal
16. The mouth symptoms have persisted since 5/15/12 now and I am concerned about what is going on. Was I poisoned by these chemicals. Did I have some hyper-sensitivity. I have been exposed to these types of chemical before without incident (although, I didn’t get the phosphoric acid in my mouth). I had the bonding removed because I thought the composite material might be causing my symptoms. But it didn’t seem to help and I further became upset when the dentist removed some of my tooth in the process, leaving me worse of cosmetically then when I started. This was a cosmetic procedure and I entered into it to help my self-image/looks.
17. I’ve meditate quite a bit the last week and have calmed down considerable since the this began I originally feet worried, concerned, angry at myself for doing this unnecessary cosmetic procedure in the first place and not doing more due-diligence. Also felt angry at the dentist, whom I feel did not take the proper precautions. For a few weeksl this put me in a tail-spin emotionally as I was just starting to make progress on other areas in my life and health. The emotional upset spilled over to aggravate the colon but has calmed down somewhat again.
18. It kind of set me back, I felt somewhat paralyzed. Since no one (doctors) can see anything physically wrong they just try to assure me that everything is just fine. I know what I feel and taste so it’s frustrating when no one believes you.
19. Frustrating, I’ve calmed down quite a bit and ready to move forward, but this taste and raw sensation is so aggravating.
20. What is going on? Is it something still on the tooth? Is it a reaction to something already gone? Worried how this is affecting me on a whole-body situation. Concerned.
21. Before the diagnosis of colitis w/dysplasia I was in chronic pain for almost 20 years. When it was correctly diagnosed it was treated and am feeling much better in that regard.
22. (Colitis) It turned my life upside down.
23. (Colitis) Of loss. I prevented me from being sexually social and alos following through on my dream career of being a professional pilot
24. None that I’m aware of.
25. Am taking synthroid and cytomel for hypothyroidism. Previously took Elmiron for an incorrectly diagnosed bladder problem. Previously took Balsalazide for colon, but after a year it began to cause pain, so stopped it. I also take many vitamins, peppermint oil, deglycerazied licorice, probiotics.
26. Parents are deceased, history of heart issues. Mother was nervous, worried type, hypertension, lived until 80. Father was always happy, upbeat, lived until 96. Three older siblings all living.
27. Bachelors degree in aviation / Former Stockbroker. Currently working on becoming self-sufficient as a photographer. Developing my own website.
28. Released from job in 2010 due to medical and psychological issues relating to colon. My job then was Financial Advisor (which I hated). I am more of an artistic type so am trying to do something with my photography/entrepreneurial.
29. I really like most foods. Probably do not prefer raw foods like sushi (have never tried).
30. Garlic and similar spicy foods aggravate colon.
31. Sensitive. I probably do have some repressed anger - I withhold my anger publicly or if someone upsets me off I do a slow burn inside instead of yelling back or releasing it. I am a bit impatient. Prone to thinking the worst. Despite realizing that I have excellent prospects in life I have lately tended to be lazy and apathetic. Having said that I do work on my website and photography – I just do not have a rigid schedule like I did when I worked and have a hard time implementing one for myself. Lonely. Am not terribly close with my siblings. I felt like the ugly duckling of the family. Have not been in a romantic relationship in almost 20 years. When in a relationship I tend to not be as concerned with my feelings but more for my partner. I am learning, though. Deep down I do feel this kernel of hope that keeps me going. I have had instances in my life where I know I have had a Guardian Angel. So I am genuinely Spiritual.
32. Aggravation increases when I’m tired or hungry.
33. – Nothing to photograph – there is no visible inflammation/redness
34. Front of tongue. Throat. Roof of mouth just behind front teeth. Sour, acrid taste in mouth.
36. No unusual secretions. Stool: light brown.

Hi,

What took you so long?

Please hold your horses.

Dear Dr. Nawazkhan,

Sometimes you get parylized from frustration. I guess I thought that there is still something on the tooth causing the problem and was investigating that aspect and also taking other peoples advice to see if it goes away on its own - it hasn't. Also, I forgot to mention that the corners of my mouth are are cracked and dry. Area where the mouth/tongue got exposed to chemicals has a 'dry' feeling.

Dear Dr. Nawazkhan,

Thank you for your recommendation.
There is only one homeopathic store here - and they only have the Boiron pellets - Is is possible to take these in lieu? Could you possibly translate the dosage, and how to take it, to this form and would it be just as effective?
Thank you.

sdnative last decade
No, you have to take the dose he advises.
Different doses do different things.

You can order off this site, and it takes
about 4 days - or less. Please order
the liquid.(btw I help Nawaz on things like this, to save time)

Thank you Simone And Dr. Nawazkhan - OK I will purchase a liquid, but I need to please know whether it is the 'dilution' or 'tincture' that I should get? Also when to take during the day and with/without eating?
Thank you again.

Dear Dr. Nawazkhan,
May I please ask how this may or may not affect the fact that I take Synthroid (125mcg) and Cytomel (5mcg) both 1x daily in early morning? They are thyroid replacement hormones for my hypothyroidism. I have been on them for 5 or 6 years. I also have been taking a Kelp supplement (225mcg)1x daily in the evening. It's basically an Iodine source and have been taking it for about 2 years.
Thank you,
Paul
