dog skin itching

Hi Joe, Hope it is Ok to talk about my dog on this site.
He is suffering from itchy skin, scratches and causes the skin to break and become sore.
He was brought from the UK to NZ 2 years ago and did not suffer from this in the UK
His diet has been good, a dry food sold at the vets (internationally recommended), supplemented by less good wet food occaisioanlly.
We have shifted alot within the 2 years in NZ but are stable now.
Somtimes he will suddenly jump as if pinched and furiously nibble the "pinched" area. He does this when he isnt scratchy.
The scratchiness usually is in spring.
I have not had him vaccinated since his arrival in NZ but he went thru a major vet inspection and vaccinations to be imported into NZ.
Hope you can point me in a direction I might look to improve his condition

hello - sorry to jump in here, but just curious to know if you have had him checked/treated for fleas.

My dog used to suffer from allergies - usually once a year she scratched and bit herself leaving red, bald spots! She also was allergis to flea saliva! we saw no fleas but she reacted for days!
Anyway in her case washing made it worse and so did the warmth of her bed. After one dose of sulph 12c she had a day long diarrhea then was completely ok.

your dog may of course need something else, depending on the symptoms.

Hi Erika, he doesnt appear to have fleas, but it is possible. I have put him on Advantage in the summer months but I dont really like it...more chemicals. Is not on it now. We live in a dry and cold area of NZ, so fleas aren't as much of a problem. Do you have a flea control suggestion?

Hi Astra2012,
you may be right about the fleas....as I cant see (or feel!)any indication they are there. I will look at sulph 12...thanks

Michele: sulphur will help only if the spots are reddish, worse with washing and worse with the warmth.
is her itching like that?
