Rhus Tox: Poison Ivy Treatment & Prevention

After many years of never suffering an outbreak of PI, I had fairly a severe case on the hands and forearms last fall. I tried many remedies including Rhus Toxs and a poison ivy soap that provided significant relief.

I also read quite a bit about PI treatment and prevention on the net, and saw several references to using one dose of low potency Rhus Tox per day during PI season as prevention. Several companies, including ABC offer such products. ABC (Washington) offers a 4x Rhus Tox for treatment and prevention. I've also seen anecdotes that some utility companies give their outside workers Rhus Tox pills to take for prevention.

My question, have experienced homeopaths and users had success using low potency Rhus Tox to treat and prevent PI, and I'm especially interested if a daily dose is successful in preventing outbreaks of PI?

And, is the PI plant common in India and that part of the world.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Rhus Tox. exists only on the mountains of India but not as poisonous as it is in North America.

In America it is more toxic in the fall and in the evening. Leaves has a pinkinsh hue.

Urtica Urens can be used on the onset of itching.

Or you can try Psorisis-1M, it may give you immunity.

It sounds like poison ivy isn't the problem in India as in North America. I was hoping homeopaths in India and that general area might have extensive experience in treating it to pass along. Lucky for the people if it's not common.

But it seems more common that homeopathic companies in the US market low potency Rhus tox as treatment and preventative. Maybe some readers will have experience with it.

Thanks for your reply.

There are many possible remedies for a poison ivy rash, the most common one seeming to be Rhus Tox.

I'm also interested in whether it is possible to use a homeopathic remedy prophylactically, and whether the prophylactic remedy would need to be one the person would normally respond to (in other words, not necessarily Rhus Tox)?

Daisy43, are you saying you think someone's constitutional remedy might also treat or prevent poison ivy? In the like cures like thinking, it seem Rhus Tox would be the treatment or prevention of choice for poison ivy.

But I'm very new to all this.

There are a number of potential remedies, Rhus just seems to be the most common one. Therefore perhaps worth trying but it may not be effective. For instance, my rash always develops a sticky honey-colored ooze that I think of as being characteristic of Graphites which is also a skin remedy.

I wasn't aware that something could be taken prophylactically for poison ivy. (That would be great news here!) So I don't know what is involved in picking one for that use. Would it be based on the most likely initial symptoms (since the rash tends to change over time)? Would it be based on what that person's rash would tend to look like (for those of us with an unfortunate history of poison ivy)? Or is Rhus Tox generic enough to work? Since Rhus Tox is such a powerful remedy in its own right, I can't see taking it repeatedly for that purpose. Perhaps it has prophylactic value for those specific days we do questionable yard work?

At any rate, I would also like to hear whether there is a prophylactic role for homeopathy in potential poison ivy exposure.

Since I had my first real case of PI last fall, I'd never given prevention or treatment much thought. But, as I said above, Washington Homeopathy sells Poison Ivy Pills (Rush Tox 4x) recommended for prevention and treatment, and I also came across a Boericke and Tafel product called Oral Ivy. For prevention, it's recommended that one start the liquid a week or two before possible exposure, then to take it throughout poison ivy season.

I don't know if other remedies might also help prevent outbreaks, but, now that warm weather is almost here, I'll consider taking some form Rhus Tox for prevention if I have any further outbreaks of PI. It can really change three or four weeks of your life for the worse.

It would seem, though, that since "like cures like", Rhus Tox would be the most likely candidate for treatment or prevention since it is the poison ivy plant.
