Infant Reflux in a 6 wk old Page 2 of 2

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
A word of warning.

I would not risk putting a tablet into a babys mouth without first dissolving it.

Do not also use it indiscriminately and do not give over 1 tablet per dose.

Joe.I think you have finished on this subject but I wanted to go back to the Thrush element which was very lightly touched on. hnb I hope your baby is doing ok.Dear Joe
I was reading with interest yr threads with the 6 wk old reflux child in Aug/Sept which also touched on thrush. I have had 2 emergency sections and have a planned section this Friday. I breast fed both children but struggled constantly with Thrush of the breast (as opposed to nipple) and suffered incredibly. I had 2 doses of Fluconazole and treated with nystatin gel and cream also but to no avail. I have been told it will come back more virelent as I never got rid of it. I have heard about Borax but am concerned about getting the right dosage and method of taking it and whether I should be taking Acidopholous also to help. I would be very interested in you or anybody elses opinions. I am really, really keen to feed again myself but cannot cope with the thought of going through it all again to no avail. Having said that I two healthy children who have never had a trip to the doctor and I put it down to feeding them myself so I am wracked with guilt about not giving my third child the same start in life. I live in Ireland. Look forward to hearing from you or anyone else. it having spent so long trying to get rid of it. I hope u can help.

Please clarify
' I have had 2 emergency sections and have a planned section this Friday'

You will also have to give me more precise details of your Thrush, when you were diagnosed with it and what your symptoms are.

I note that you are using medication for this condition and your response would be of interest.

I have a 6wk old with GERD which I have not and do not want to give her the PRescribed medicine for. Trying to find remedy so I do not have to. WE also have thrush which I am taking Diflucan for and she is taking(given) Nystatin plus we have the triple nipple/ Magic Butt cream. I was wondering if the remedy listed here on this forum was ok for us as well?

Looks like it was Nat Phos 6x 1 pellet three times a day for GERD

And Borax 30C mother 3 pellets under tongue and baby 3 pellets in spring water dose up to 3 or 4 times a day as needed until Thrush is gone.
OR
Nux Vomica30c3 pellets 2x daily.

Just making sure since post if from 2006...

I find your post very confusing.

Please state your 6 week old Baby’s problem precisely giving details of her distress to enable me to help her.

I am glad that you dug up this post which dates back to 2006 when I first discovered that Nat Phos 6x was by far the most effective remedy for Baby GERD. You may like to know that many homeopaths criticised me at that time and they eventually accepted that my “Joepathy” which was a term they used to attack me, was in fact more effective than their own classical therapy which invariably did not work to CURE their ailments, especially their Babies.

I regret that I cannot treat Thrush which you seem to suffer from. It is very likely that the cause of baby’s distress may be the antibiotic cream you use as she gets it from your breast during feeding.

I shall copy my default therapy for Baby GERD which I have prescribed to hundreds of babies which I hope will help your baby too.

The remedy that has proved to be very effective for Baby GERD is:

Nat Phos 6x tablet dissolved in milk given immediately after a feed. Start with half tablet but if the response is not as expected, you may increase to a full tablet but you will not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours.

You may like to try to reduce the quantity of milk you give for each feed to enable baby's digestion to stabilize. You will however feed more often. It is essential that you burp baby immediately after each feed.

You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby. You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.

It is best not to vaccinate Baby till s/he is over a year old as the after effects in some cases can add to the problems with GERD.
Do not give Baby any solid food till s/he is over 8 months of age.

You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that Nat Phos 6x will help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.
Report progress in 24 hours and as often as you wish on this thread.

If you discover that baby does not respond to the Nat Phos 6x alone and this has occurred in a few cases, you will contact me again and I shall then prescribe another remedy to reinforce the action of Nat Phos 6x.

Do NOT USE Nux Vomica and Borax for your baby.

I agree NatPhos can help with symptoms of GERD. The cell salts can work quite well - sometimes even better than a remedy.

However, it won't address the thrush. And a remedy like Borax could help significantly. But it has to fit your baby's symptoms.

I described in detail on page one a few various remedies, including Borax, and typical symptoms for them.

This combined with the triple nipple cream can work well. Nystatin can help but to really be effective should be compounded in a stevia base (as the sugar in the traditional yellow formula can contribute to the thrush). Unless they have changed the formula in the past 8 years.

But hopefully, the remedy can address it regardless. I see no reason why a remedy can't be used at the same time as the NatPhos, 6x cell salt. Our family does it all the time.

I have found sometimes it is enough for the mom to take the remedy but in more serious cases, the baby also needs a direct dose.

Also, check with your doctor, but a probiotic can go a long way towards helping ward off thrush and yeast.

Best wishes. I remember all too well how hard that was!

Hi Joe,

We found your recommendations for GERD various places on line and followed your protocol for Nat Phos 6x for our son.

He is 12 weeks old, but was born 8 weeks prematurely so basically is developed like a 4 week old. He is currently 8 pounds.

He spent a month in the NICU, where the doctors would frequently feed him laying down or place him in that position immediately afterward. He developed a tendency to choke and spit up some of his food.

We got him home and have been very diligent about keeping him upright to avoid reflux after feedings. However, he has been plagued by numerous conditions: infant acne, cradle cap, eczema, thrush, and reflux.

The reflux had gotten progressively worse until for the last several weeks he was having extreme pain from eating, ate less at his feedings, and ultimately even started to lose weight.

Our pediatrician suggested Zantac, but after having a bad experience with it myself didn't want to go that route. Then I found your suggestions, and we decided to try it.

I'm happy to say that his symptoms improved quite a bit, and he was suddenly eating full feedings again (from 40-50 ml to 75-80ml), and has seemed to be in much less pain and discomfort.

HOWEVER, much like another poster recently stated, he has since developed a serious case of constipation. He had 5-10 bowel movements per day up until the day we gave him the Nat Phos, and now, almost 4 days later, he hasn't had a single bowel movement, and it's clearly starting to get a little uncomfortable for him. You can hear his intestines gurgling but nothing comes out!

My wife was also constipated the last two days, but that has since cleared tonight. Also, after reading this post I just had her (post her bm) take the Nux Vomica as per your suggestion.

The baby eats exclusively breastmilk, either expressed or from the breast directly (and mom hasn't gotten the thrush yet).

Lastly, as a side note, the doctor did give us Nystatin and it has had virtually ZERO effect on the thrush.

You are very fortunate that you did not give baby the Zantac prescribed by the pediatrician as it would only have made her condition far worse.

I prefer not to treat baby for constipation as it is not unusual for one to not pass a BM for a few days. Nat Phos 6x is a laxative as it works by stimulating Peristalsis and thereby ensures that the formation of excess acid is inhibited.

You can massage her abdomen gently and watch for results which you will report her on this thread.

It is very likely that all her problems will soon disappear when she puts on more weight and her digestive system stabilizes. We must remember that she is a preemie born at 32 weeks and her body must be given time to adjust to life outside the womb.

For the record I shall copy my default therapy for Baby GERD which I presume that you have already read elsewhere as it embodies useful tips which you can observe in her future life.

I am very grateful to have found this posting online. I've had my 3 month old daughter on Prevacid since she was about 8 or 9 weeks. Her bowel movements went from daily to once every 8-9 days. I was not concerned until the last occurrence when she became visibly upset. I came upon many postings online that described other infants on this medicine with the same experience. Of course the pediatrician states the two are not linked! I have used a suppository, taken her off Prevacid, and started your therapy for GERD. She is responding beautifully. I am feeling better as well. I had taken Xanax for 13 years and stopped several years ago. I have been considering starting again after I stopped breast feeding because I tend to shut down when I feel overwhelmed. The moment I took the nat phos I began to feel normal again. My question is in regard to the duration of taking this product. It appears to be one week? Please confirm. Am I supposed to titrate off or completely stop? Thank you again for all your help!
