SINGLE OR A NUMBER OF MEDICINES

Reproduced below a review of a Book written by a leading homeopath in India. See "the pearls of wisdom" below:

Quote

This book under review is by the famous and today's oldest living legend of Homoeopathy in India, Dr. Koppikar who, at 88, is still working, teaching and writing, and living in Chennai. He has indeed repaid his dept to Homoeopathy by writing this book. Most people leave this too late or do not finish all that they wanted to say.
1.He has talked about everything from how to acquire knowledge of Materia Medica, various aspects of prescribing, case taking, case analysis, chronic diseases and role of ant-miasmatic treatment. He has cited difficult conditions. This book, in the words of Dr. Jugal Kishore, who has written the preface of the book, will be a great source of learning.
Dr. Koppikar delineates his evolution into a versatile Homoeopath right from his student days. He has cited every step along the way.
2. He has given some pearls of wisdom:
(a) In very bad cases we must not merely brag about greatness of homoeopathy or promise cures, but set a deadline for the trial of our system, a time limit, after which patient can choose which way to go.
(b) The best explanation he has given is that in a given case there may not only be 1 remedy which is the similimum and will cure, but it could be any of 4-5 remedies. Eg in a case of measles with added pneumonia, any one of these would work : Tub avaire 200, Rhus tox 200, ANTIM TART, Phos, or Morb 1000 just 2-3 doses would clear it up. This then would explain why so many Homoeopaths get results with different approaches.
3. He has talked about the contribution of each Master and how they went about finding out which was the best way to treat.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Yes, Yes, I admire Dr.Koppikar for being flexable to include what works for the individual. If I am positive that the one remedy is called for, I will suggest it, but if the individual calls for several, I also give.
I was taught by an MD and a well-known psychic at the same time. I use kinesiology when I want to make very sure of my choices. Where I live Homeopathy is very widely used, and I am considered the "Odd" one. Sabra

Hello Sabra !

You are not the odd one. In India Homeopathy is a popular way or treating disease.

You are correct when you say that with so much pollution going around and so many infections floating around, not necessary that a single medicine will do the work all by it self.

Some times , one has to use two or three medicines in succession to clear the system.

Furthermore, treating with two or three medicines is not new. Dr. John H. Clarke, in his famous work "THE PRESCRIBER" has very clearly advised that a homeopath should study the taints from heredity and history of the patient and clear them one by one. He uses the words .....demolish "the walls" one by one by using different mediciens each time appropriate for that "wall".

Do share your "pearls of wisdom" from time to time.

I dug this out from the Archives for allto see.

Thanks Pankaj

For 'digging' this out.

In serious cases try once, and if you fail leave the choice to the patient.Good words of wisdom.

As long as you don't mix medicines, giving a series of medicines is appproved by many authors particularly in acute cases.

I will try to get the book.

Hi Murthy !

Your post just reminds me that I should add the "Word of Caution" necessary in using multiple medicines:

Pl.see the drug relationship between medicines i.e.

-complimentary,
-anti-dotal or
-inmical
-which first and which
one later
(just asin case of Sulphur and Calcarea Carb.).

....before you prescribe.

Yes Pankaj

This gives rise to another interesting discussion on inimicals particularly.

Some authors say if the first medicine doesn't work, you can safely use another medicine, if it seems to fit the case, even if the second one is written as inimical in books.

This view is expressed both by Nash and Vithoulkus.

But,I feel it is always safe to go by accepted rules. It is very difficult to judge with certainity whether our choice is 100% correct.

This reminds me.

Are you aware of any indian publisher who has Abdur Rahaman's "remedy relationships"?

I am keen to lay my hands on that book.

I agree from experience with layers of treatment needed, but only one remedy at a time.

I got my copy of Abdur Rehman's Encycl. of Remedy Relationships at minimum.com and yes, it was expensive, but I wont' do anything without consulting it.

Right now I am training my D.O. (who is doing my cranical osteopathy) in homeopathy, of which he has only a general understanding. This is one of the books I told him he must have.

I am a lay homeopath who has studied intensively for four years and I help friends and family when I feel it is simple and safe to do so. I am 62 and cannot afford the cost of school so I do not try for a degree. I already have a graduate school M.A., but in another field.

Lived in Thailand for 4 1/2 yrs, Mexico for some months, and Germany for three years. Taught Spanish and English as a Second Language.

Worked in medical offices for 15 yrs and this has always been an interest of mine so am comfortable with anatomy and physiology.

Organon permits single or multiple remedies at the same time? (This is mine question)

In acute cases, it is likely that the picture changes frequently, and you may have to change your medicine often.

In case there is some amel, but the same symptoms return after sometime, you have to repeat the medicine.

Repetetion is allowed for a maximum of three times. If you have to repeat further, you have to rise the potency.

But as long as the symptoms picture doesn't change, single medicine is the only correct way.

The response time varies from a few minutes in acute cases to few months in chronic cases, depending on the susceptability of the patient, the similiarity of the remedy, and the potency selected.

Never take two medicines together.

Hahnemann tested two remedies when it was recommended to him by one of his followers, but ended unsatisfied and removed this possibility from later editions of the Organon.

In those good old days peoples were not in hurry but now a days if they do not get benefit withen few hour they would shift to some other physician. The trend has changed now a days so the physician must be careful when prescribing otherwise he will loose the patient.

Dear Pankaj/Dr Sajjad

Can there be more than one constitutional remedy for a person/diseases, for example, if a Chronic Calc Carb patient can be cured by Calcarea Carb, can the same patient/diseases be cured by another remedy.
Another way to put this is to ask that out of more than 1500 remedies available, only one would cure a chronic patient, if the answer is yes, homeopathy becomes a very very difficult science, because if a homeopath misses a constitutional remedy, the patient is doomed ?

Please enlighten us

Thanks & regards

There is misconception about constitional remedy. In actual fact the constitional remedy is that which covers the patient's physical symptoms plus his personal symptoms, his mind symptoms ,his desire and aversions, likeness and dislikeness and all other symptoms which have no concern directly with his physical problem.you can say every time the constitional remedy will change because every time the disease will be different.

DEAR Sazim,

Speaking of chronic cases:

Pl. see my post of 2003-12-25 on this thread itself regarding comments of Dr. John H. Clarke from his book 'The Prescriber'.

Actually, a patient might need two...may be three meds to clear all the taints that have accumulated in him from heredity.

For acute problems:

The choice of the med is as per the immediate symptoms that are showing up.

Say blood clotting due to injury....give Arnica.

Bee sting/Wasp sting...give Apis....

Fever and headache due to exposure to cold... give Aconite ..etc. etc.

Answering the second part of your question:

That is why it takes years of study and work to hone the homeopathic skills.
The effort is worth it ...coz homeopathy strikes at the root of the disease and eliminates the causes vs. mere control of the disease as in allopathy.

Best wishes,

Good Pankaj

It was a good discussion we had, and nice of you to dig it out.

Incidentally, now I have the Rehman's 'Encyclopedia of Remedy relatioships' ..the most expensive book I have so far.

It costed my son 55 Pounds, and he has sent it to me. Unfortunately this is not available in India.
