Pet rat with unknown problem Page 3 of 3

Can prednisone *heal* pituitary tumour? Make it disappear? I know rats can recover from stroke, partially or fully, I've seen such cases, but this is definitely not a stroke. I must say homeopathic remedies are working for the rat, but not fully. I already tried Baytril (IM, 2x per day, 7 days), I did not try steroids. I would, but I'm afraid it would not help, only prolong the suffering :/

Hi,

The prednisone acually helps to shrink/reduce the inflamation of the tumor which in turn relieves the pressure from that is applied from the tumor on the brain. I don't think the tumor is ever healed or gone, but by reducing the inflamition/size of the tumor you can remove the symptoms/problems.

Anytime a rat losses coordination such as full or partial loss of its hands, legs or mouth, it is either caused from a stroke, pituitary tumor or spinal cord degeneration (which is rare).

How do you know it is not a stroke, symtoms in rats are almost identical from strokes and tumors; but either way the treatments are the same: prednisone along with baytril, doxycycline or amoxicillian. Baytril by itelf is not sufficient for the treatment of a tumor or stroke. The combination of the said antibiotics with prednisone is the treatment that the experts call for.

The rat experts say that aggressive treatment is needed and the sooner the treatment is given the better the chances for a full recovery. The longer the time between the arrival of the symptoms and the start of treatmentment, the less of a chance of a recovery.

My rat made a full recovery twice on this treatment in the past.

I am just relaying the treatment information that is given by the rat experts, and what worked for my rat.

I have a phone number for one of the rat experts, if you would like it, she has written a few published books on rats, you could call her directly at 1-530-899-0605, her name is Debbie.

I am not saying that homeopathic treatment won't or can't work, I don't know. But due to the severity of the illness I would think that a combination of homeopathy and traditional medicine might be a more effective way to go. If it is a tumor or stroke and the the homeopathic medicine doesn't work it may be to late to reverse or stop the illness from progressing.

Give Debbie a call and get the info right from a rat expert.

If you need any help or have questions, let me know.

I wish your little rat all the best.

Take care

Also, I forgot to mention, you said you gave your rat baytril by injection, the experts advise not to give baytril by injection to rats because it is very caustic, and injections of it has caused abcesses and the bleeding to death in some rats. They say Baytril should be given orally, which is safe. Don't forgret to read my post to you just before this one, I listed a number of a rat expert for you.

You mean Debbie Ducommun, the Rat Lady? :) I know she is great, but I'm not from USA. I think I'm gonna pay a visit to my local vet and switch to allopathy again. But I'm afraid it is too late by now :/

I think this is really not a stroke - after stroke, the symptoms appear suddenly. This was slow, gradual process. But it can be an exception, I'm not denying this.

Now the rattie added wheezing and coughing, that's great :/ I think I will abandon homeopathy for this case, I don't want to see the poor animal suffocating - seen it before and it was not nice.
Steve, have you tried homeopathy as supportive treatment for myco an other respiratory infections?

Hi,

With the added symptoms now of wheezing and coughing, you should do the amoxicillian and baytril together along with the prednisone at 1mg twice daily--It sounds like that is your only hope at this point. I would do it all with oral meds; you can mix soy baby formula, 1/4 scoop with engough or soy milk to make a light paste and mix the one or two of the meds into it. A couple doses like that gets the meds into him and also engough nutrition to stay alive. I would start this treatment right away, before it is too late.

No, I have not tried homeopathy for myco, only amoxicillian and baytril treatments.

I did use homeopathy formic acid along with the prednisone and antibiotic treatment in the past for thr pituitary tumor, which seemed ok.

well I wish you and your little friend the best

Back here, with bad news :( Andelka died yesterday. I think she was recovering quite well from that stroke or whatever it was, but she caught severe secondary infection. In three days, she went from coughing to pneumonia. It was pretty quick and I think she did not suffer much - in the evening she ate her supper with good appetite, some time after came the first choking attack and looks like the next one shortly after midnight got her. I cried for her in the morning, one more time in the afternoon and I feel a little better now - I think I did what I could, I will be mourning for her some time, I will never forget her as I will never forget any of my ratties...

Thank you all for advice and support.

Selina, So sorry to hear the news about Andelka. You did your best though. I hope you have peace with that. And the knowledge that she had a good life with you.

Your story touched many of us and we'll be thinking of you as you grieve this loss. Ruth

Hi I just noticed that someone else asked a question about a pet rat.

I´ve got a question if anyone knows something about rats and is able to answer. I don´t know where else to go.
my rat Hector´s stomach began to swell up almost two days ago, he now looks like a round ball, or very pregnant. He has no pain, and runs happily to me if I enter the room. He eats well and drinks too. He´s got clear eyes and energy. his digestion is normal. I´ve only given him special rat food.
he´s just very swollen.
He´s 2.5 years old

anyone know what it is? or what what to do about it?

Hi Laika,

Sorry to hear about the bloating/swelling in Hector's stomach.
There are several things it could be things that are easily treated liked stomach distension (air be trapped in the stomach), which can be treated with a about a quarter (1/4) of a teaspoon of Gas-X.
Or more complicated things like urinary blockage, not being able to urinate properly/fully and is an emergency and needs to be treated by a vet right away.
Or, things like tumors, or liver, kidney or heart failure.
There is a problem called megacolon which is usually in babies or young rats.
The best case would be air in the stomach which you could treat or urinary blockage which a vet could relief if he is treated in time otherwise it can quickly kill them from the toxicity of the urine.
Hopefully, it is not one of the more serious problems as poor rats don't have too long of a life span. I ended up loosing my rat Buddy, at about 2.5 to 3 years of age.
I would suggest calling Debbie, she is a rat experts, she has written a few published books on rats, you could call her directly at 1-530-899-0605, her name is Debbie. She doesn't charge to help you over the phone.
She may be able to help you figure out exactly what is wrong before it is to late.
Otherwise, I would recommend getting Hector to a vet that a lot of experience treating rats.
I would call her as soon as possible or get him to a qualified vet asap; you don't want to wait as it has been a problem for a few days already. But you may save time and money by calling Debbie first.
I wish you the best of luck with Hector. If you can post back and let me know how you made out.

Hello.

I am writing with a similar problem. My female rat who is a little over a year old is really sick. About a month ago she had a tumor growning just below her shoulder. It got big at a quick rate. We had it removed and it was encapsulated but the inside was bloody fluid. The vet said she has never seen anything like it before. We never got it tested because we felt if it was cancerous there was nothing we could do. After the surgery she done extremely well until a couple weeks after. She got extremely weak and had red fluid coming from her eyes and nose. She could barely walk and would topple over, it was so sad. I took her back to the vet and she told us to feed her baby food and gave us some antibiotic, she also found another mass growning down by her groin. She got better.....for a few days then it happened again. This time it was almost as if she was crying/whining continuously. I took her back. This time more antibiotic, morphine, and an anti-inflammatory. She was doing good but now she is starting to relapse again. I dont know what else to do, and it breaks my heart to put her down but I dont want her to suffer. Help me!

I would appreciate anyone that could possibly give me some kind of answer why my daughters pet rats died. I went into her room today with clothes and they were dead, when I asked her she ofcourse cried and said an hour ago they were fine. We have not changed their d iet or housing products. They were two females that we have had for almost a year. When I was removing them from the cage I noticed one had a small blood drop on her stomache- no open sore, no bumps... and the other female could not see anything abnormal-What could have happened to make them die and at the same time or close to it? Thanks

Hello, I have no idea if this forum is still active, but I will write to see. I have a female rat, almost one year old. I noticed a change in her behavior drastically last Tuesday. She was walking back in forth in the same path in her cage, rolling back on her tail, loosing balance, and acting not herself [usually she is very active/hyper jumps on cage walls, nips at fingers, grabs food from hands]. All this changed during just a week. I took her to the vet, and he said she suffered from trauma on the back of the head resulting in neurological disorder, and he gave her a anti-inflammatory injection to reduce swelling. It's the Tuesday after the Tuesday I observed this odd and bizarre behavior. She did, however, improved about a day after returning from the vets office. Now, she is going downhill. She is hardly drinking any water, but when I give her banana's and raisins she eats them. She hangs her head over the dish and dries to bite the dish. She sometimes goes to the water dispenser but doesn't drink anything. She has bloody paws which the vet said wasn't infected and didn't need any treatment. He also said she may be biting herself due to stress? Now she just seems dumbfounded, and she is rolling back on her tail and she can't jump up on top of her igloo. I hope you all can help me; I will be posting on other forums and I am taking her back to the vet probably tomorrow. Thank you all. - Aidan Patrick

AidanPatrick, it is possible that your pet rat may have initially suffered a stroke or seizure. What you saw after the first episode may have been the resultant after-effects of either, and the 'dumfoundedness',etc is also symptomatic of either. It is also possible that there may be some kidney damage. Is your pet rat dehydrated? Sometimes, in cases of dehydration a pet will go to the water dish, hang its head over and can't drink to save its life. It's as though a switch shuts off and needs to be manually turned back on. When it gets to that stage subcutaneous rehydration is necessary to kickstart the pet drinking again, because not enough water can be given by mouth and assimilated fast enough at that point. When enough fluid is given subcutaneously, a pet will, on its own, begin to go over to the water dish and drink, sometimes as soon as a half hour later. The switch has been turned back on, so to speak. A pet hanging its head over a water dish is a sure sign of dehydration, kidney disease/kidney failure. It could have been triggered by a seizure/stroke. In either case, there is a wealth of information on this link by other members, and you may wish to add blueberries(or bilberry if in tablet form), Transfer Factor Plus,MSM(methylsulfonylmethane),vitamin C and glyconutrients to her diet to assist her recovery.
