Lylla or David,
I have a general question that I was hoping you could help me to understand. Is it possible to take a remedy which actually suppresses your illness/condition and makes you feel good/better but actually impedes the curative process. For example, could you have a skin condition which may need to bring out a rash or other skin condition and could you take Lycopodium or Belladonna (for example) and feel much better but only because it suppressed your condition instead of allowing it to aggravate and thus help to heal your condition.

I often read that homeopathy will only help to allow the VF to get a nudge and can not hurt you...if this is true then in my opinion the wrong homeopathy can hurt you instead of help you.

Thank you.

David,
I was wondering if you had any questions or thoughts as to next steps with my son. Do you think Med is still working to heal him? Do you agree with the idea that we are probably dealing with suppressed eczema? Just let me know if you need additional information.

Thank you.

If everyone is ok with it, I will have a look at the case as it has been taken so far. Give me a day or two to do that.

Remedies can indeed suppress the disease, if they are given for the wrong reasons. This usually happens when only one part of the case fits the remedy, and usually a superficial part like the skin.

Homoeopathic medicines can definitely harm you if they are misused. In fact, if suppression is carried through to its natural conclusion, they could kill you. However it is important to understand the remedies themselves are not dangerous, only the practitioners who use them incorrectly. This is one reason I am so vocal regarding pseudohomoeopaths.

We have plenty of guidelines to prevent this from happening, so as long as a practitioner keeps to them there is no danger and homoeopathy becomes the safest medicine in the world.

Thank you.

Looking at all the notes will help you. You will note that my son also had mosaic warts on the bottom of his foot which a doctor had to aggressively treat since it was not responding after 8 months of treatment. That was around 2009.

Again, any questions do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks again.

Update:
My son still has not gone #2.

Also I wanted to mention that my son last night asked me to get Head and Shoulders for his hair. I asked him why he needed this and that it really is not a good shampoo to use. He said his scalp is dry and itchy. I asked him for how long its been like this and he said for a long time...he couldn't be more specific. My guess is that he probably has had it for some time but not for too long.

l471530 last decade
FYI...still no #2. I think this is resulting in more aggravation of his acne on his face...seems to be some new spots and the old bumps looked a little more inflamed today. Also noted that his freckles on his nose and even his moles on his face seem like they are more dark in color.

Also, when I picked him up from school he said he's sneezing a lot more today...clear discharge from nose. He said he's been rubbing his eyes lately.

Oops, guess his clearing of his throat/cough was just a one day mishap...its back.

I still can not decide between 2 medicines, so I have to ask you something: is there a side on which his symptoms (any of them, like headaches, when he has them or body pains or motor skills or anything at all) are worse? What is his sleeping position now? Was he a bed wetter, when he was young?
Also, please, remove him from charcoal, if he is still on it after this stomach flu, we need to see if the cramping is still here, the color of stool, so on...

Lylla last decade
I will remove him from charcoal Just so you know he was off the charcoal before his diarrhea because he was constipated. He did not have any cramping but he was still constipated.

In terms of sleeping position...side and sometimes back with hands over head. When he sleeps on his side, he likes to sleep more on his right side and he likes to move his feet after a while to another location where it is cooler. He likes to have his feet cooled off.

He can't say that anything is more left or right sided. I asked many different ways and gave examples but he doesn't think so.

Before his diarrhea and when he was off of the charcoal, his stool was a very dark dark brown.

Lylla and David,
I wanted to let you know two things.

First, my son this evening was telling me how much his dry scalp is bothering him. When I asked him why he has not mentioned anything he said I thought it was just from my shampoo. Then he further explained that he has such bad dandruff as well. He then proceeded to shake his head over a black fleece jacket and just with a few shakes, the whole jacket was covered with not small, but large white flakes (mixed with small ones). I was stunned as I had no idea. He says it really bothers him and so I took some coconut oil I have and massaged his scalp with it.

When I asked my son if he has a need to scratch it because it itches him, he said no it is just really dry.

Second, he had his first bowel movement since last Thursday or Friday and it was intact dark, dark brown and not small balls but larger ones.

I just read in an article...http://www.joyfulnoisedaycare.com/sjohnson3.html

Avoid soy milk or any other unfermented soy product. Miso soup is okay because it is fermented. Unfermented soy products block thyroid hormone function, protein and calcium absorption, and have strong estrogen effects. Organic rice milk is okay but it mostly consists of carbohydrates. Homemade almond milk is healthier. With regard to cow's milk, I learned during my training at the Lukas Clinic in Arlesheim, Switzerland that the healthiest milk to drink is raw organic whole milk. Ultra-pasteurized, homogenized non-organic milk is seen as the least healthy milk to drink because all the natural enzymes and vitamins are destroyed by processing, and the fat is disrupted by homogenization. The book Nourishing Traditions also discusses the advantages of raw milk as does the journal Wise Traditions published by the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Don't know what the real facts are regarding soy milk but my son drinks a lot of soy milk. When he was young we had to stay away from diary and we went to Rice Milk at first and then to Soy Milk. He enjoys soy much more than rice. In any event, I did want you to know that he does consume a fair amount of this.

The more I read the more I seem to worry. It just seems as though if something is good in one way, its bad in another and how is any parent to know what is best for there child anymore. It would be nice if my son ate only what was best for him...first, he probably wouldn't eat much and second, I'm not sure I even know anymore what is best.

David, are you getting any closer to your selection(s) of remedy. Also, I am wondering if either of you support multiple remedies. For example, if you know you have poor food assimilation and a congested liver, is it okay to try to use 6X of something that helps with this while you are also trying to correct root problem with a more constitutional remedy. I have always supported the one remedy concept but I think there are times when maybe you do need some additional support.

Thoughts??? Thanks again for your time and consideration.

What is his experience with goat milk? For some people it works just fine, if there is no cow's milk mixed with it. Some brands claim to be just goat, but they cheat and put cow's there.
Problem is, any homeopathic medicine is capable to change symptoms of both body and mind, and then it is much harder to find constitutional medicine that fits totality. The correct way is to use constitutional medicine, then to re-evaluate the case.
Knowing David, he is likely to ask questions, and since he did not yet, he is not close to finalizing his choice. I would love to see his questions since they will help me too.

Lylla last decade
I do not like the use of multiple remedies as this not only breaks one of our most basic principles, but it usually means that the real cause of the problem has not yet been found. Multiple remedy prescriptions causes much confusion in long term management of a case.

I have tried going through the case, but it seems either the information I need is not there or it is too spread out.

Can you do me a favour and answer my own intake questions for children?

1. Describe in detail the main problem - appearance, colour, shape, sensation, pain. etc. What happens, when it happens etc.

2. Describe any pains or behaviours associated with the symptoms.

3. Describe anything that makes the problem worse ie. position, temperature, food etc.

4. Describe anything that makes the problem better ie. pain is better for cold bathing or at night in bed.

5. Go through each symptom or problem he/she has, doing the same thing, even if the problem does not seem connected to any others (repeating answers for questions 1-4 for every problem)

6. When did each problem start? What happened around that same time?

7. What is his/her character like? What kinds of fears or anxieties does he/she have? What makes him/her irritable? Flesh out his/her personality as much as you are able (age can make this difficult)

8. What foods does he/she crave or hate? What drinks does he/she crave or hate? Is he/she sensitive to anything he eats or drinks? How does he/she feed?

9. How does the weather or season or temperature affect him/her?

10. How have all his/her milestones gone? Does he/she have any issue with speaking, learning, walking, climbing etc

11. How is he/she with socializing with others?

12. What is his/her bowel habit like? Any problems? Any odours, strange colours or stool shapes?

13. Where does he/she sweat? Does it have a smell or does it stain a particular colour?

14. History of illnesses in his/her life?

15. Has he/she reacted to any vaccines or medical drugs?

16. Problems with sleep? Position he/she sleeps in?

17. How is he/she with animals?

18. How is he/she with adults or strangers?

19. What is the family history of illness and disease?

20. What was the pregnancy like? Any odd symptoms or feelings that disappeared once he/she was born? Any symptoms that were problematic? What kind of stresses were you under?

I'll try but I do hope you read my notes because I think they will provide the best information to help you understand things.

1. Describe in detail the main problem - appearance, colour, shape, sensation, pain. etc. What happens, when it happens etc.
Asthma -- restriction of airway
Allergies - environmental (ie. dust mites, pollen, mold, grasses etc. and food related (i.e. milk, corn, eggs, oranges, etc.)

2. Describe any pains or behaviours associated with the symptoms.

-- hacking/cough from restricted airway
-- biting of nails
-- sneezing
-- iron deficiency anemia (to be retested)
-- constipation
-- likes to lay down all the time even if its to do homework.
-- little energy; sluggish, lethargic
-- acne on both cheeks
-- aching muscles and heel/ankle pains
-- melancholy, not his happy go lucky self
-- introverted not wanting to be with people
-- stunted growth (maybe from medicines etc. he takes for asthma)
-- dry scalp/exteme dandruff

3. Describe anything that makes the problem worse ie. position, temperature, food etc.
-- hacking/cough from restricted airway ; nothing
-- biting of nails ; nothing, observed even when watching TV, when at sports, while homework
-- sneezing; nothing
-- iron deficiency anemia (to be retested)
-- constipation; nothing
-- likes to lay down all the time even if its to do homework; nothing
-- little energy; sluggish, lethargic; nothing
-- acne on both cheeks ; nothing
-- aching muscles and heel/ankle pains; activity especially sports (basketball and soccer)
-- melancholy, not his happy go lucky self; nothing
-- introverted not wanting to be with people; nothing
-- stunted growth (maybe from medicines etc. he takes for asthma); nothing
-- dry scalp/exteme dandruff; nothing

4. Describe anything that makes the problem better ie. pain is better for cold bathing or at night in bed.
-- hacking/cough from restricted airway ; laying down -- I mostly observe when he's sitting up or standing/moving.
-- biting of nails ; nothing
-- sneezing; nothing
-- iron deficiency anemia (to be retested)
-- constipation; nothing
-- likes to lay down all the time even if its to do homework; nothing
-- little energy; sluggish, lethargic; nothing
-- acne on both cheeks ; nothing
-- aching muscles and heel/ankle pains; activity especially sports (basketball and soccer)
-- melancholy, not his happy go lucky self; nothing
-- introverted not wanting to be with people; nothing
-- stunted growth (maybe from medicines etc. he takes for asthma); nothing
-- dry scalp/exteme dandruff; coconut oil --used last night and he said it helped will do again tonight.

5. Go through each symptom or problem he/she has, doing the same thing, even if the problem does not seem connected to any others (repeating answers for questions 1-4 for every problem)

6. When did each problem start? What happened around that same time?
-- hacking/cough from restricted airway ; this is difficult to answer. I think he probably had it before I realized what was going on...I was thinking everything was an allergic reaction so didn't realized that infact he had asthma. I definitely began to hear wheezing when he 4 yrs old (2002) -- can't say whether or not he had it when he was younger.

-- biting of nails ; after homeopathy started, last 1 1/2 yrs I would guess.
-- sneezing; again this is tough one to answer because I thought so much of his symptoms were due to his food allergies, I wasn't in a position to understand what was really going on at that time. I can only tell you that his sneezing is typically related to environmental allergies...his wheezing was more related to his food allergies (at least that's the way I see it)

-- iron deficiency anemia (to be retested)
-- constipation; after he took Medorrhinum
-- likes to lay down all the time even if its to do homework; after he began homeopathy
-- little energy; sluggish, lethargic; after he began homeopathy; before the homeopathy he would get lethargic and have less stamina and energy but it was after he was able to enjoy life...now he has it all the time.
-- acne on both cheeks ; after Baryta Carbonica he first got acne...nothing like now after Medorrhinum

-- aching muscles and heel/ankle pains; after he began homeopathy
-- melancholy, not his happy go lucky self; after he began homeopathy
-- introverted not wanting to be with people; after he began homeopathy
-- stunted growth (maybe from medicines etc. he takes for asthma); I've questioned his doctor on many occasions as he seem to start out in the 40% then it went down to 25% and then 10%...after Baryta Carbonica he had a significant jump (he grew like 3 inches after that and he's now in the 25%)
-- dry scalp/exteme dandruff; coconut oil --after Medorrhinum

7. What is his/her character like? What kinds of fears or anxieties does he/she have? What makes him/her irritable? Flesh out his/her personality as much as you are able (age can make this difficult)
Character -- I think he has a great character, kind, loving, moral compass, honest, sincere, genuinely cares about other people's feelings. I would definitely say he is a sensitive person. He doesn't like people who are not nice. He doesn't like to be told he's done something bad...when he was young he would go right to his room and didn't want to see anyone when he did something he should not have done...he would even cover his eyes. I find my son is fun and lovable until he is sick and ill, then he becomes irritable and is not as nice to people. With his current situation, I actually found when he was tired, muscles hurt and just wasn't feeling well for such a long period he actually became critical of other people and his friends didn't like his negativity.

Confidence -- my son lacks confidence in himself. He is not assertive at all. He is quite accountable but not going to put more into something than he has to. He typically is not an introvert and actually he use to be an extrovert but even having said that, he is shy. When I tell my friends that they so 'no way' but actually he has timid (shy is probably strong) way about him.

Anxiety -- I know my son right now is anxious because he is biting his nails...I never have considered my son an anxious person but then again, he may be. I think what might make him feel anxious is just his need to feel liked, accepted and treated in a nice manner. He doesn't like people that are nice people and because he is so sensitive it doesn't take much for someone to be perceived as a not so nice person -- voice raised etc. I do think that right now he is anxious because he knows he doesn't feel like he use to, he's tired all the time but yet he wants to be outside and hanging with friends deep down but he doesn't have the energy to do things etc. I do know that he has said several times last year and this year, that the school work was getting hard for him and I'm sure that makes him anxious as he is use to good grades (his grades are not as high as they use be but he is in middle school with new kids as well). Being in a new school also brings anxiety, I'm sure (but he was in his old school and the year or two before last year -- he was becoming more introverted -- that's why I believe his introverted nature is from the homeopathy. I can tell you with some certainty it was after 2008.

8. What foods does he/she crave or hate? What drinks does he/she crave or hate? Is he/she sensitive to anything he eats or drinks? How does he/she feed?
This is difficult as we have had many issues with food.
I won't go into the past but rather say right now...
He likes fish, some meat, some pasta, some vegetables and loves his cereal, soy milk). He like and eats fruit. Oranges, I stay away from too many because of an allergy which came back...Eggs I am limiting right now, again an allergy that has recently come back...Milk has come back too (although we never went back to milk he was eating pizza, ice cream etc).

9. How does the weather or season or temperature affect him/her? Seasonal allergies -- so winter is usually better than spring or fall (summer so-so).

10. How have all his/her milestones gone? Does he/she have any issue with speaking, learning, walking, climbing etc . I would say he was a little slow with speaking and walking ( he was a very chubby baby)

11. How is he/she with socializing with others? Use to be great. Right now, I think he looks very timid, lacks confidence, a little socially behind (texting, girls -- they are more advanced then him so it puts him at a disadvantage).

12. What is his/her bowel habit like? Any problems? Any odours, strange colours or stool shapes? He has become constipated with Medorrhinum and they are dark dark brown (they were small round balls but they have are larger in size and more rectangular (his work).

13. Where does he/she sweat? Does it have a smell or does it stain a particular color? He sweats on his head and feet the most...and since Med. a strong offensive odor (after sports only) otherwise after school, he doesn't have a bad odor.

14. History of illnesses in his/her life?
Born jaundice,
cradle cap,
eczema,
colic baby.
Had step throat many times and some ear infections.
Had several warts when he did Martial Arts when he was in 2nd and 3rd grade (he is now in 8th grade) -- in 2008/09 he had a mosaic wart which got quite large and we couldn't treat at home...went to the doctor and it took that a year to treat...injections, etc.
Since homeopathy he has also had a change in his teeth -- enamel wearing etc. (before his teeth seemed fine).

15. Has he/she reacted to any vaccines or medical drugs? I don't know...vaccination, he may have for all I know.

16. Problems with sleep? Position he/she sleeps in? Sleep is good. He sleeps on either his side or back. He likes to move his feet to get them to a colder place in the bed...he does this throughout the night he says.

17. How is he/she with animals? We have a dog and he loves him. He seems fine with animals.

18. How is he/she with adults or strangers? He is fine with adults and strangers.

19. What is the family history of illness and disease? Must I...
Great Grandmothers -- both the big C (as this forum won't let me use the correct word)
Great Grandfathers -- alcholic, cataracts,
Grandparents -- diabetes in 2, cataracts in 3, gout in 1, the big C in 1, arthritis in 1, heart in 2, obesity in 1, anxiety in 1, depression in 2. high blood pressure - 4, I'm sure I'm missing something...so ask if its important to your selection.

20. What was the pregnancy like? Any odd symptoms or feelings that disappeared once he/she was born? Any symptoms that were problematic? What kind of stresses were you under?
He's my second child so it wasn't a first time experience. He did have to be induced as he didn't want to do it on his own. He was born with jaundice and was a colicy baby. I breastfeed for approx 6 months. He was a rolly-polly baby and love to drink. He loved being rocked before nap time and he was a great sleeper (could go 3 hours and maybe longer but I would wake him). After his colic (lasted about 4 or 6 months) he was such a happy/smiling baby. Food was his issue, even after the colic he still had food issues and still does to this day. I did observe when my son was in kindergarten, that he may have some learning problems. It is hard to explain...but with my daughter having learning problems you pick him up some cues. I would see him always having this 'deer in the headlight look'. His teachers never seemed to notice anything. I just kept an eye on it. I think because he did well in school (my daughter did not do well at all), I thought things were fine. But I think it is when he was in 5th grade that I once again notice some signs and then the teacher said to be after his 5th grade school year 'it took me until the end of the school year to get to know your son', I thought, maybe he does but his grades never reflected a problem. Same thing in 6th grade. The first time that I think I really thought there are cognitive issues was last year. My son had high entrance test grades but yet his grades don't reflect what he tested to get into the school. When I asked the school about it they said its an adjustment for some. Then for the first time last year, my son said he felt like he can't keep up with the school work and that it is hard for him. He said it again this year. I asked him if he wants to change schools and go to his public school (he has friends there from sports -- lots of them from over the past 6 years) but he doesn't want to. He went to a parochial school and most of his friends went to the Jesuit school that he is going to. In any event, he doesn't want to change schools. But this is I will tell you...the Baryta CArb and Med are the 2 remedies he has taken which he and I both can tell have helped him. I personally think he can use more help...he's still a little backwards but I don't want to emphasize it as his asthma and allergies are the first real concern. I do think he has had learning issues and I think they somehow have gotten masked because of his nature to do well, his intelligence but I do think that it may have played into his anxiousness.

I just remembered, my son gets car sick in the car... a little better in the front. Its not really bad where he throws up but he can't read and he opens the window on occasions.

Okay, I hope this helps you. I must tell you that I have read some articles (Dr. Luc is one) where they do point out that if you delay before administering the next remedy too long you could loose some of the progress made with the initial remedy...he was speaking specifically of Med. as I have seen my son not making much progress for some time and yet not stuck in this not so good place, I still wonder why we have waited so long to give another remedy.

I understand that a picture needs to emerge but I would rather go with something than nothing if it means we could possibly lose what little progress he has made.

One last note, and then I will let you do your work, it is important to note that my son has not had any asthma related symptoms in some time (at least a year), and that when he became sick after passing out he got it again...and this time with Med. he has had it for longer in duration than he has ever had it. Mind you...it is not a rattling wheezing that he use to get but yet a restricted airway. He's had this since the end of Jan...I just think this is not right to have him like this for so long. I do want to understand what we might be imposing on him as he I want to know if he will have down time due to a 'healing process' etc.

Thank you so much for your time.

Thank you very much for doing that for me. I know it can be a bit tiresome constantly repeating a case to new practitioners. You have been very thorough I will try to work through it this afternoon.

Of course not giving a remedy soon enough means the patient will relapse, but the simillimum works rapidly and deeply no matter how many years or decades the patient has been sick. I find it is better to be sure of the prescription than to try and rush the dose through. Remedies can add new symptoms, make people worse, and this is not a price I am ethically willing to inflict on someone.

Something I notice straight away is the general lack of modalities for many of his complaints. This may mean one of two things - one is that he is not willing or not able to communicate them to you, or the other is that those complaints have no energy in them (so are not particularly helpful in finding the remedy). The most vital part of the case is the part that has the most modalities (qualifying characteristics), and this part is the most likely to lead you to the remedy (will look most like the remedy).

In fact it seems very strange to have so many symptoms without modalities. This will make it impossible to use those symptoms at all - without modalities we have no way to compare them to a remedy.

So this immediately eliminates:

Sneezing
Biting of nails
Anemia
Constipation
Lethargy
Acne
Melancholy
Introversion

Of those other symptoms with some kind of modality, the aggravating or ameliorating feature is common (to be expected with the complaint) so it is of no use homoeopathically.

Aching muscles worse for activity
Dry scalp better for coconut oil

So none of that will aid me at all.

So hopefully the mentals or generals will be of more help.

In terms of his character, he seems to have many positive characteristics, and these are also useless for prescribing. We don't want to cure those. He is sensitive to reprimand, and doesn't want to have others see his bad behaviour. Completely normal behaviour for a child.

But the critical quality, that might be something to look at. Can you say what kinds of things he criticized? What did he say? What did he notice people doing or saying? Negative about what?

Lack of confidence is definitely something that should be explored. What kinds of situations is he shy or unconfident in? What makes him act timidly? Where does he act with confidence?

Has he told you what makes him anxious? It is very important not to make any assumptions about that. It is fine to observe the situations where he is clearly anxious, but it is vital we don't theorize about it. It is better not to use the symptom at all than theorize.

Some patients bite nails for reasons other than anxiety so this isn't a definite connection.

So he only craves cereal is that right? I assume he asks for it all the time, prefers to eat it over other kinds of food? And he eats any food, doesn't hate anything?

What temperature or weather does he prefer or react to in some other way? Does he like the cold, like the open air, does he hate the sun, avoid the wind etc? We are looking at him as a person, not his complaints.

What kind of odour does his sweat have after sports?

What exactly are his 'food issues'?

What problem does he say he has that makes the schoolwork so hard for him? Why can he not keep up? How does he describe this problem?

David

David,
I understand some aspects of what you are saying however it does seem as there are many things that have not presented until homeopathy. Not being an homeopathy but just a parent indicates that he is in some temporary state that he is stuck in. As you know it is often difficult as kids are not necessarily fully aware of what is normal and not normal (physically and mentally), and for the part neither are many adults, so he of course does not say much. I'm a little confused.

Here's the answers to your questions

But the critical quality, that might be something to look at. Can you say what kinds of things he criticized? What did he say? What did he notice people doing or saying? Negative about what? It gets back to when my son is not feeling well and is tired he gets irritable. I think this irritable include being more critical of people...less tolerance. Like he was complaining a lot more about his teachers, also he seemed to be negative of his coaches and some of his teammates...less tolerance is a way to describe for sure...he's not a good coach, we should be doing this instead of that....he doesn't pass and he turns the ball over all the time. Now granted, we all can be this way. My point with much of his symptoms are that he does them a lot more when he is not well (tired)

Lack of confidence is definitely something that should be explored. What kinds of situations is he shy or unconfident in? What makes him act timidly? Where does he act with confidence? He acts with less confidence in many situations now...school and sports -- for sure. He acts more confident at home.

Has he told you what makes him anxious? It is very important not to make any assumptions about that. It is fine to observe the situations where he is clearly anxious, but it is vital we don't theorize about it. It is better not to use the symptom at all than theorize. Then I can't say he's anxious...he's never said he was and infact he doesn't really come across as an anxious boy but when I see someone biting their nails I guess I assume there is some anxiety of some sort.

Some patients bite nails for reasons other than anxiety so this isn't a definite connection.

So he only craves cereal is that right? I assume he asks for it all the time, prefers to eat it over other kinds of food? And he eats any food, doesn't hate anything? All I can say here is that he enjoys cereal but I don't know if I can say he craves it. Since the Med, I can definitely say he is more thirsty and if he craves anything it is chocolate Silk Milk...he's been drinking a lot more than normal. There is no doubt my son would have a diet of sweets and carbs if he could but I don't really tolerate and he does know the importance of a good diet.

What temperature or weather does he prefer or react to in some other way? Does he like the cold, like the open air, does he hate the sun, avoid the wind etc? We are looking at him as a person, not his complaints. He does not like the cold. He likes the sun to a point...when at a beach, he's had enough son my lunch and likes to be out of it. Doesn't like wind either.

What kind of odour does his sweat have after sports? interesting...pungent but what does that mean...again, I have only notice this strong offensive odour since Med...and its after sports. I'd have to wait until his next sport activity and take more notice. No color staining on his Tshirts (his dad actually gets that yellow staining on his shirts and underpants).

What exactly are his 'food issues'? I'm actually not really sure right now. When he was young he was tested and found via RAST tests and IGG indicators to be allergic to many things like, various fruits, tomatoes, eggs, corn, almonds. I found when he ate certain foods he would get nasily (first sign) and then he may sneeze or get a wheezing in his chest...this happened within a day. Milk eggs and oranges, I found to be most obvious ones. The doctor also recommended a gluten free diet which we did for two years -- may have helped a little but what I noticed it really was cutting out milk that made a huge difference. Before cutting out milk, he was always wheezing and sneezing...eyes would get inflamed. With no milk, he was much much better.
Homeopathy did seem to help...he was beginning to tolerate milk much more but eventually it seemed like that is when the muscle aches/achilles heel issues began and it affected sports which he loves dearly. With Med, we seem to have some of the food issues back, milk for sure.

What problem does he say he has that makes the schoolwork so hard for him? Why can he not keep up? How does he describe this problem? He does not elaborate too much at all. I know for example in a few subjects, like Italian and English, he will say, I have a bad memory. He is good in math except when it comes to his mid terms and finals then he does not so well. For example this past Mid-term for Math.... he was getting 95's and 100's during the class and then he got an 81 on his mid term. This is true with other subjects...he can remember things in small doses but large amount is more difficult for him. I do know prior to Med, he must have had some focus issues in class. Because after he took the Med, a week or so after he said Mom, I find I'm able to focus more in class now. That's a prime example...would I have ever known that he felt he could not focus...he has never mention this until he notice a change. That's why I say that he has that 'deer in a headlight' look which always alerts me to the fact that he is not comprehending what is being said. It's like he's there, paying a ttention and can hear but the words don't always get processed in his mind. The Med has seemed to help him. I do notice that he is now trying a technique which I have suggested many times over the years, to no avail, which is to say something out loud as it may help to process it differently. I noticed that the past two weeks, he has been doing this. So he is probably still struggling with some memory issues...but at least he is now heading some advice.

BTW, he woke up this morning and said that his post nasal drip is back. The past two years or so, he has used a nettie pot to wash his nasal passage way during allergy season...I even have a plastic bottle with pkg of salts for his bathtub...they help some. During allergy season he sneezes, he gets nasal drip, his eyes inflame and he gets more tired. Well, it may be that time again.

Let me know what other questions you have. Understand that I wish I could be much more specific but it is difficult when dealing with children. There is so much they don't yet understand and they are just beginning to learn how to listen and hear what there bodies are telling them.

Thank you.

David and Lylla,
I can't help but feel as somehow my son is stuck due to the Med...I have never seen this sort of reaction with my daughter or myself.

I came across this very insightful article. Take a look...Pay attention to the section of Prescribing out of Sequence.

Is it possible that we are looking at Med, which would have been called for but maybe just prematurely administered?

IMPORTANT...
I have been bothered by his acne...just because it looks different than just regular acne. The more I have been reading the more I wondered if this asthma/allergies/eczema triage was really being brought out with the Med.

I decided to look online to see pictures of eczema on someone's face...I think my son has eczema on his checks (a little on his nose) and not acne. When he took the Baryta Carb., it was in the same general area but then it looked like acne. After he took the Med...I explained how awful the acne got on his cheeks...but awful is because I believe its eczema and not acne.
Please advise.

Thank you.

I wish I could see the patient ...
Do they look like flat red dry spots? Are they itchy? You said he picks his 'acne'. Are they located along jaw line? Behind his ears?

Lylla last decade
No it is on both cheeks. Based on pictures, they definitely look more like eczema...I was wondering why the area was so red behind it, not just the acne...some have crusted over, some have a yellow stuff coming out towards the surface. He does not have it on the jawline nor behind the ears. It's definitely 75% better than it was initially but it seems to have stayed relatively the same for the last few weeks...not clearing up although the redness is not as intense, more crusting over now...some were bleeding before but now they are not. They initially itched him but not now.

Also, we just got home and he was sneezing and blowing his nose the whole way home...he said 'Mom, allergy season is here and I've been congested all day.

I know you think I'm impatient but I actually think I've been quite patient as he had his initial fainting spell followed by his asthma on 1/23 and it is now 8 weeks later and I feel like we have been at this 'stuck' place for the last few weeks. I never would have let him go 8 weeks with his passageway inflamed restricting his airflow...I would have given him either Belladonna or Arsenicum. I know that these may not be the long term direction needed but I know I use to give him Belladonna and it worked well in the past.

Based on what I have seen before, he seems to be at the place where his immune system is being attacked and everything is flaring up...and unless I do something this asthma/allergy will continue to weaken him...I speak from past experience. We need to seriously consider some viable options which will help to build his system back up.

Thank you for your patience and consideration.

Here is that recurring theme...when he is not feeling well, (now the added congestion) he gets in these very irritable moods like today. He is back to his talking under his breathe which he did initially when he took the Med but then it went away as is congestion went away. Both seem to be back. Interesting, I don't know if there is a correlation or just a coincidence.

His clear discharge from his nose is now yellow tinge and he has very dark circles under his eyes (more like iron deficiency dark versus allergies dark - at least from his past experiences).

I hope I am not coming across as critical of you. I am aware that most parents are not homoeopathic case-takers, which is why I try to step them through the process as carefully as I can. I am completely reliant on your ability to observe your child in a way that will help me make a prescription, so educating you is of high importance.

He has not has his simillimum yet. That is the only real problem here. Trying to establish some complicated explanation regarding sequences of remedies etc. will only distract from that one basic truth.

Lots of people get odd reactions to a remedy that is partially correct. Such a remedy can stir up sll sorts of things. The advice as given in the Organon of Medicine is not to ponder over the why, but to instead represcribe using both new and old symptoms (or returned symptoms as in your son's case).

The simillimum will cure all the major problems he has, and set things right. Finding it should always be the main goal. Using partial similars to nudge him from side to side and hopefully upwards towards health, is an imperfect method of prescribing, and should never be the focus of treatment, but may happen when the simillimum eludes you. I have done it, but it often ends with you having to find that simillimum anyway to keep the person well (or you will see relapse at some point in the future).

My whole style of prescribing is to understand the case from one basic problem (the roots), which then grows into many. The solving of that problem will remove the others. Other practitioners will instead focus on each branch and slowly work their way down to the roots. This takes longer and actually is prone to more errors (needing to find many 'correct' remedies instead of one). And while the roots remain, new branches can grow.

Anyway, that is just how I do things. Homoeopathy can be practiced different ways, and we all find the way that suits us best.

So he criticizes how other people do their tasks is that right? The reason I ask that is that we project our own feelings outwards on to others, so if he says that about others, he feels it about himself. That would suggest his issue is with doing things the right way, the correct way, with doing jobs properly.

The lack of confidence still hasn't been defined for me. School and Sports are not situations, they are locations. Home also is just a location. What exactly does he lack confidence doing? When do you notice it or does he express the problem? Lots of things go on at school - exams, public speaking, confrontation, socializing etc. Lots of things happen in sport - winning, competing, losing, pushing yourself, physical stamina etc. It is a fairly common thing for a child to be more confident at home than outside of it.

Ok so the idea of anxiety can be put aside for the moment. The biting of the nails will probably be seen more as a habit.

Right so now we have Chocolate milk as a genuine craving - good. Not chocolate or milk on their own though?

So he would eat sweets if given free reign? What kind of sweets, what kind of carbs? Remember that cravings have nothing to do with what we are allowed to eat, but what we want to eat. So even if he is forbidden to indulge they are important.

Odour of the sweat will help, as 'strong' and 'offensive' is covered by a large number of remedies. It's good to note down anything that is peculiar or strange, as these will narrow down our choices dramatically.

Aggravation from milk seems to be a strong and reliable symptom so that I can use.

So his memory is bad. I can understand how that would make his schoolwork difficult - so much of our education system relies on rote learning rather than understanding.

However this lack of comprehension obviously is more than just memory, because it happens as the information is going in.

It is starting to look something like the remedy Anacardium.

Brain fag
Impaired memory
Absent-mindedness
Lack of confidence in himself and in others
BAD MEMORY
Hesitates, often does nothing
Unsocial
Vanishing of thoughts, deficiencies of ideas
Loss of comprehension, confusion and emptiness in the head
LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE
Estrangement from individuals and society
Forgetfulness makes him very morose

It is important, as the person observing and reporting symptoms, that you do not go and read up on this remedy. It will alter how you perceive the case and you need to keep your mind clear of remedy pictures.

See if there is anything you can add based on what I have asked.

David,
First let me say, I love you analogy to the tree and branches. Deep down I do know your process is a sound and good one and makes a lot of sense...it just gets difficult when you see your child struggling.

I will do my very best to help you ascertain the information you need.

I also want to add for you that my son was up in the night blowing his nose...discharge is now a yellow and thicker mucus (not just from allergies).

I understand your point about his criticism...doesn't that fall into your question about confidence. If you are critical because you may feel you are not doing things right (i.e. he doesn't start on his school team and so he criticizes those who play more because he deep down he thinks he is not doing something right and therefore why he is not playing as much), then I think that would influence your confidence. So maybe Sports is a location but it is a situation for me too. He lacks confidence because he use to start and play more when he was younger and now he is not...so, you are helping me to better understand and explain some of his difficulties. What happens at school becomes more difficult because I don't see him in that environment. Maybe it gets back to his learning difficulties. As you sit in class or in a social setting at school and you are not processing all of the information, you can't be engaged to the same extent, you feel different and maybe therefore lack confidence. Socially, I can see it too. He may be on a different 'page' so to speak. Many of his old friends hit pubity two years ago and he has not. They are into girls and are more advanced in some of their activities and conversations -- I would think this makes him less confident as he sees they have developed (he doesn't say this, I just feel this).
My son is a pretty athletic kid (as a young child he was very fast, agile and quick etc.) and so when he was young this was an advantage and he started, played a lot and kids liked to be around him. As he hasn't' developed and they have (coupled with asthma, allergies, muscles problems, fatigue), the last few years has been quite different. Maybe he is reacting to this as he is a very sensitive child.

Let me just point out that he drinks Soy Milk...although if he drink regular milk I think he would still crave it. I would say he craves milk. The chocolate is interesting because i have a story from when he was young. My son loved chocolate and I would find wrappers all over the house (I'm talking when he was 3 and 4 yrs old). One time when he was 4, we had company over and a lot was going on and all of a sudden I realized I hadn't seen or heard from Justin...there he was sitting on a ledge stuffing his face with chocolate. Another time, I went to get my son from his room and I noticed that he had his mouth full of something...I asked him what he was eating and he just shook his head as to say nothing. I asked again and he did the same. I asked him to open his mouth and there was chocolate in his mouth. We laugh still today about his love for chocolates. Today, I will still find wrappers as I think he must be getting sweets from school because I don't even have much of what I find. So yes, he does crave sweets (not sure if its as much the chocolate anymore as it is sweets). Carbs, he loves to eat cereal (even without milk). Yes, my son would probably live on sweets, milk, cereal and crackers. I have notice he has also begun to really like to eat popcorn this past year or so.

Odour, I need more help here. It is not a sweet scent that is for sure. Can you give me some example to choose among?

It is very interesting that you selected Anacardium...I have not gone back to read about it just now as I understand the importance of me providing you with information that is not biased. But I remember when you recommended Nat Mur for my daughter, I was looking at the remedies and other possibilities and I kept on thinking she may of been suited to Anacardium ..because I think it dealt with concentration which was one of concerns and it seem liked it fit some other things for her (again, I only read what is on the internet and don't really know these remedies).

Hope this helps you. Again, don't hesitate to push me as I want whats best for my son...I am really trying but recognize my details are probably falling short.

Thank you David.

David,
I don't know if this makes sense or not but is there another remedy or two that you are considering that has some other keynotes that you can then ask me if they fit my son's situation.

Just a thought.

I also wanted to add one more thing. Since you are new to the case and may not have noted in my earlier notes that my son did do very well on Baryta Carbonica from a cognitive perspective-- there was an immediate difference in his schoolwork and also he grew (which was great to see) -- but it obviously wasn't complete as it was a precursor to his anemia, blood count issues etc.

Just thought you should know. I didn't see anything dealing with his stunted growth...is that okay or was it missed? T

I'm sorry, but I am really feeling like I must do something soon to help me son.

We just got home and he is as his wits end...he said that he has not slept the last two nights...which i did not know. He said that he was finding himself outside of his cover with his head towards the other end of the bed...he is not even aware of his disturbed sleep until he wakes up in the middle of the night and then he corrects his position only to find himself back in the wrong direction.

He said he was miserable at school today, not only is he sneezing, discharging yellow mucus, congested but that he is now wheezing like he use to a long time ago and that his lungs hurt him.

Folks, I am feeling like we are not doing right by my son. I feel like I keep raising flags but they are ignored. Again, as a mother I can not just sit back and wait till we feel we have the correct similium (???) whatever it is. I have not found many cases at all (and none that are complicated) that this ever happens anyway. I understand that David is looking not at the physical but the mentals to find his similum but maybe we find the best for the physical and then move to the mental...if that will move us in the right direction. The longer we wait the more we are in jeopardy of making matters worse from him from what I have read. I know I am not a homeopath but I am not ignorant of homeopathy and its practice and I do read many forums and books on the subject.

Please recognize that my son is getting worse at this point and not better. Again, I do believe we may have taken a premature step but regardless, let's get him at a better place...please.

I am editing the post...because I realized that this may seem harsh and that I don't appreciate your time and consideration. I am not trying to sound ungrateful and I do appreciate your time. David, you have walked in after I have raised many flags so you must be really confused...I do apologize. This is unfair to you but please recognize that this is a case that has been going on for 2 months and not 1 week.

Lyllia, I still have not heard anything from you regarding next remedy...why? Do you really think I am being impatient? Do you not think we are in jeopardy to make matters worse for my son...this does happen? How long do we wait for Med to do its thing...until it makes my son sicker and sicker and we have serious medical concerns? Lyllia, you don't seem to ever address my gut instinct that we are not taking prudent steps...but you don't explain your plan to me. Please help me to understand it. Please tell me that this is suppose to happen for weeks and weeks that he gets sicker by the day. Do you see the continual signs that only negative things have happened after the first 4 or 5 weeks and that the last 3 or 4 weeks have been nothing other than worse conditions.

I need help to clarify my understanding of the process you are taking us through.

David and I have a little different approach to find a simillimum, as you correctly noticed. He narrows down medicines based on mind symptoms; I use them too, but I try to fit physical symptoms as tightly as possible, probably with the prevalence of physical as your son's mind is still unclear to me. I wished to fill this gap when David walked in, and his questions were helpful, but not enough. I think it is important though. Mean while, your son constantly exhibits new symptoms, like disapearence of aches in his feet (was expected), yellow discharge from nose, eczema instead of acne - should I trust it is a true eczema? fakes in the scalp, wheezing, - there is no single day without a new symptom, although some were expected. It makes my task more difficult. So I am still looking, I need to narrow down my selections too.
Does yellow discharge from the nose smells? Does he perspire when he sleeps, if yes, where? I need to understand his movement in bed during sleeping, is it due to being hot?
