The ABC Homeopathy Forum

18 mo old cold

My 18 month old daughter started sneezing yesterday and last night she slept very restlessly and had a runny nose, clear discharge. I had given her Ferr phos before bed but it didn't seem to be the remedy for her.

She doesn't have a fever. She is very cranky. Kind of red-faced.

I gave her Belladonna 30x about 2 hours ago. It doesn't seem to be helping her either. She needs to sleep because she didn't get much last night and she is waking up and not letting me leave once she is asleep.

Her nose seems to be stuffed up too. It actually isn't running excessively today.

She also holds her ears when she is crying sometimes, as though she has a headache or is teething which she is getting a lot of teeth in right now. But I think it is a headache and not teething because of her other cold symptoms.

I am tempted to give her Chamomilla because of her irritability, but thought I would post on here before I keep trying other remedies.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
chamomilla sounds like a good idea.

Hi Erika, or anybody,

The Chamomilla worked well for a night or two and then stopped working. She had a screaming fit and was still inconsolable after the Chamomilla. So then I switched to Hepar Sulph for a night or two, which also worked until yesterday.

Yesterday morning, she woke with a thick runny yellowish white nasal discharge. This only happened in the morning. I gave her Hepar Sulph. In the afternoon about 2:00, she started the screaming fit again. She seemed to be in pain. I think I tried Chamomilla again. After about an hour of it, I felt so bad for her I gave her acetomenophin and she immediately stopped crying. I don't want to keep giving this to her, but it helped for the moment.

She was fine and went to sleep around 9:00 and then woke up around 11:00 with a 100.7 F temperature under the arm and increased respiration that sounded difficult. The respiration wasn't alarmingly high (about 30 a minute) But it sounded difficult and shallow at times.

I gave her Belladonna. Her breathing increased to 39 a minute about a half hour after I gave her the Belladonna. Then it settled back to about 27 a minute for the rest of the night.

Her fever is down now after two doses of Belladonna, but it is also morning. So I'm not sure if the Belladonna is what helped or not? Her breathing was 32 a minute before she got out of bed. It seemed shallow and difficult at times.

She is playing happily now and her temperature is 99.2 under the arm.

I am thinking of giving her Ars Alb. Would this be appropriate?

I would get a doctor to check out whether it is her ears - you don't have to take the docs medicine unless you consider of course it is emergency (which it does not sound like from what you say, temp. dropping etc), it is just to find out where the pain is coming from to make it possible to suggest remedies better. I could be pain from ears, teeth, throat, head etc etc and it is better to have a good idea what it is.
It is a good sign that she is playing happily now.
make sure she gets plenty of water.

Hi Erika,
Thanks so much for your reply. I called the doctors office this morning and while I was waiting for the call back I took her temperature and it was down to normal again. She has continued to be content and happy today.

The doctor didn't have any openings until tomorrow and told me since she didn't have a fever to just watch her and make one for tomorrow if I felt necessary.

I feel comfortable with this, but have a question about the rapid breathing. Is it always a sign of bronchiolitis or bronchial asthma or can it just develop due to a fever? How do I know the difference?

She is still panting a bit today, despite not having the fever. This may be a stuffed up nose, though.

Thanks for your help.
Linda

Hi - a doctor would know more about the rapid breathing than me. As far as I know this can be due to the fever and, as you say, the present presentation could be due to blocked nose.
