Confidence in specific homeopathic remedies

My wife believes in the effectiveness of homeopathy, and recently gave our 2-year old boy a homeopathic treatment for a skin rash he has. (Our MD/homeopath physician recommended two remedies plus Benadryl if the homeopathy didn't clear things up in 24 hours).

Putting aside the plausibility of homeopathy in general, I am curious why people have confidence in a specific homeopathic remedy?

For example, while I believe in the scientific method and advances in scientific medicine, I realize that some pharmaceutical medicines are more or less effective, or more or less risky, than others. All are obviously not created equal.

Yet it seems that people who follow homeopathy take just that view. I've never seen discussion of the relative effectiveness of different homeopathic remedies (just whether they work at all or don't work at all.) I can't think of any reason why all homeopathic remedies should be assumed to work the same. Maybe Arnica works really well but Histaminium is hit-or-miss?

I am curious to hear from somebody who has a perspective on this.

Thanks.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Please read 'how long is it OK to take a remedy' Remedies should be prescribed on the individual's symptoms in total, children are usually easy to read. Remedies are energy in a bottle not drugs and work on another type of system within the body. Good question!

I realize homeopathy is different than science-based medicine.

Perhaps I could ask differently: do you believe all homeopathic medicines are equally effective if diagnoses properly, even those you lack personal experience with? If not, how do you know which work well and which work poorly? Is is simply a matter of putting faith in the Organum and the 'provers.'

Hpathy IS scienced based, it is different in the way it acts, most 'mainstream science' is chemical action on the body, and is repressive. Hpathy is rooted in Physics, and releases energy. It is obvious that one will not be able to proove one over the other by using priniples designed for another totally different branch of science. The principle works the same with all remedies whether I 'believe' it or not. Which means, to stimulate the immune system into action and leave it to do its work untill the body needs another stimulation act(dose). That could mean once every ten minuits in an acute phase, or again in six months or even a years time in a chronic case. Wrap your head around this, we look solid but in reality we are light atoms, densly packed. If you can grasp this then it is not too difficult to begin to understand how Hpathy will work on the body of light first which translates into the physical body via cell nucleas regeneration.

Hi mdarby

I will put it this way. Some medicines are well proved like the example of Arnica you gave. The symptoms Arnica produced in the provers have been verified time and again, and hence we do prescribe it with confidence when there is symptom similiarity.

There are about 200 such medicines we call as 'poly chrests' which are well proved and are useful for many diverse conditions.

However there are medicines which are not adequately proved, and as you say they can be a hit or miss.

The 'modern' gurus are writing materia medicas based on their 'intelectual' perceptions without conducting any provings. I won't be confident enough to prescribe them.
