4.5 yr old stuttering

My 4.5 yr old daughter started mildly stuttering off and on about a year ago. She was an early talker and expressed herself without any problem prior to this.

Almost 6 months ago she started stuttering much worse. It started during a week when she fell and hurt her elbow, tornados came through our area and we were in the closet for almost a whole day (and my husband's car was totaled at work by the tornado), and her baby brother started crawling.

She stutters worse when she is tired. It is typically at or near the beginning of a sentence. It is not always the same words, and the words that she stutters on are words that she says without difficulty daily.

She has not been sleeping nearly as well as she used to. It takes forever for her to fall asleep at night, but she will fall asleep quickly at nap time if I am there. She seems to be restless in her sleep much of the time now.

She has recently become very anxious about ensuring that I am paying exact attention to her.

I have not noticed stuttering in singing/whining/complaining, but she does stutter when excited and during normal conversation.

Her stuttering seems worse when she is around family than when she is with friends or their parents, or even strangers. (Which seems backwards.)

She has a very good appetite and will eat all kinds of food. Recently she has asked for spicy food.

The only real health problem that she has had was a febrile seizure (just after she turned 2) after she started children's motrin for a fever. We went to the ER and they said she had an ear infection; she had antibiotics that one time. She has had one other ear infection since then, but we treated it with olive oil. She was sick for a few days (which was treated with homeopathics) this past winter, but that is all. No vaccinations.

I keep having everyone tell me that I'm worrying too much and that this is just who she is... or they tell me to put her in speech therapy. I just don't think either is right. She's a very bright little girl and I feel like there really is a solution out there for her. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you!!!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
please give her ACONITE 1M two doses at 10 minutes interval on any single morning in empty stomach.

no food or water for the next 1 hour.

report to me after 7 days.

Thank you for your response!

I went to the storefront here, and it lists several different varieties of Aconitum available at 1M.

Is there one in particular that I should purchase?

Thank you!

worriedmommy last decade
I purchased: 1 x 2dm Granules Aconitum Napellus 1M

It should be here in a few days.

I hope that was the right one. I'll post as soon as the 7 days are over.

Thank you!

worriedmommy last decade
yes, thats the right one.

come back after 7 days to report any changes.

It's only been 4 days thus far, but today was suddenly her worst stuttering ever. She would get stuck several times in one sentence. She was getting so frustrated, and then the more frustrated she got, the less likely it was that she would get the word out.

Also, the last three nights she has woken up crying for no apparent reason (this is not typical for her at all). She has felt very hot to the touch, to the point of sweating. I calmed her back down each time (once per night) and she immediately cooled back down and was able to go right back to sleep.

I was able to get her mind off of her inability to say anything by talking sing-songy and acting goofy, and she could reply in kind without difficulty. However, once she tried to speak normally again, she was back to stuttering immediately.

Help!

worriedmommy last decade
Describe her general behaviour. How excitable is she? How sympathetic is she towards other people's problems? Tell about her food cravings/aversions apart from the spice craving.

What was the primary feeling during the time this problem started ? Was it fear ?

sameervermani last decade
In general, she is a happy little girl. She likes to 'mommy' her younger siblings, and has always been very sympathetic. I remember when she was only about 12 months old and she accidentally bumped my head with hers and she had a look of complete concern because I said 'ouch'.

She is very spunky, but also reserved when meeting new people. She gets along with them rather quickly though. At this point, she does not seem to have a stuttering problem around other children, or even really with other adults.

I don't know that her primary feeling was fear, per se. It was more concern. She was worried about the tornadoes and about her dad. But after they'd passed, she was telling everyone the story with gusto about how his car was totalled by the tornado. And then she also hurt her elbow one or two days after the storm. She was upset about this, as it was the first time she had ever experienced real pain; just a few bumps and bruises previously. The stuttering started the day after she hurt her elbow.

I haven't really noticed any particular food cravings. She's been saying she's thirsty much more often before bed, but that may be a ploy to stay up a bit later. She has a very healthy appetite and eats all different types of food. We've never been big on sweets, so she doesn't really get (or ask for) many.

Today was the first day that her stuttering was actually bad when she was alone with her sister. I overheard on the monitor and she just couldn't get anything out. Today she started raising her head/chin to try to get words out. She couldn't carry on any type of normal conversation today. However, when she became frustrated to the point of stopping trying, she was able to cry out 'I can't say it!' Other times she would just stop trying and remain silent.

One thing that has been different is that she's been asking that her beverages be cold. We usually drink room temperature water, but she's been insisting that she wants something cold to drink, even if it's just ice water.

I'm not sure what else you need to know, but ask away and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Thank you!

I've been thinking about her primary feeling at the time, and I think that in addition to being concerned for our and my husband's safety, and that when her elbow was hurt that it put her in a lot of stress.

I would say that stress from being in these very unique situations was her primary feeling when the stuttering began.

worriedmommy last decade
it seems you have already given her one dose of aconite 1m.

did you notice any changes in the first 24 hours?

rishimba last decade
I would recommend just 3 doses of Phosphorus 30c.

Dissolve 2 pellets in a 250 ml spring water bottle. You can shake it gently after they have dissolved.

Take a capful from this bottle 3 times in one day, spaced by 2 hours. This is to be done for one day ONLY.

Let me know in 3 days after these 3 doses.

Restrictions:

1/. Nothing should enter the mouth for 40 minutes prior to, or after taking the remedy.
2/. Do not touch the tablets with your hands, tip them into the cap of the container they came in and then into the water .
3/. Avoid coffee, tea (including green), and other sources of caffeine such as some fizzy drinks and large amounts of chocolate, except where this would cause a drastic change in consumption
4/. Avoid wearing perfume/aftershave, or exposure to anything with a strong smell while under treatment. This includes any and all essential oils, and incense.
5/. Avoid the consumption of excessively spicey foods
6/. The use of medicinal herbs, either as 'teas' or supplements should be avoided during Homoeopathic treatment, as should the use of over the counter medication, unless this has been recommended by an MD.
7/. Nothing of a medicinal nature should be applied to the skin

The only difference noted within 24 hours was her waking at night. Her stuttering remained the same until yesterday, when it got much worse.

I will try the phos today.

worriedmommy last decade
if the stutering has got worse, its time to wait a few more days.

taking another remedy right at this time wouldnt allow the possible cure due to aconite.

sometimes the symptoms get worse before getting cured. please keep this in mind. you have all the time to try any other remedy if this doesnt work.

wait at least 5 days more.

rishimba last decade
I did wait the extra 5 days for the aconite (16 total after last post, because we went out of town). Her stuttering returned to where it was before her taking the aconite, but her sleeping did seem to improve in that she is not as restless and is not as dependent on snuggling with someone to fall asleep.
.

I tried the Phosphorus three days ago. Her stuttering is much improved. She stills stutters every so often, but it happens perhaps 10-15 times per day now, which is much better than before.

I was not able to keep her away from strong smelling lotions, however, as she managed to cover herself with a particularly pungent one when I was not looking. And then I sprained my ankle and have applied Tiger Balm a couple times per day. Other than that, I believe I completely followed your directions.

I am very happy with the results thus far (and so is she!), and was wondering if I should do anything further to help completely cure her stuttering?

Thank you so much!

Worriedmommy, since your daughter is still very young then she might benefit from a stuttering treatment developed specifically for stuttering in children younger than six. It's called The Lidcombe Program. I'm not allowed to post a link here so Google it. But here's what I found on their web site: The program is administered by a parent in the child's everyday environment. Parents learn how to do the treatment during weekly visits to the speech pathologist. At these visits, the speech pathologist trains the parent by demonstrating various features of the treatment, observing the parent do the treatment, and giving the parent feedback about how they are going with the treatment. Research to date has shown that for preschool children participating in the program, stuttering is no longer present, or is present to only a very mild degree, after treatment

Thank you for your response, Anxious99. I'll look into it if we can't get it taken care of homeopathically.

to Sameer, should I give her another dose of the Phos?

Thanks!

worriedmommy last decade
I find it very interesting that this post just pop up right at this time that I've been trying to help Anxious99 with his stuttering too. I was reading the whole thread and I just saw a parallel with the two cases right after I read what you wrote about your daughter asking for ice cold water after taking Aconite.

It's very clear that she was actually proving the remedy once this is a strong characteristic of Aconite, and that very likely this was not the simillimum.

It's very good to hear that she has improved after Phosphorus and credits to the person who indicated wisely based on your daughter's friendly and happy personality. In my opinion you should make sure that her sleep and well-being continues to stay good otherwise Phos would be working only as a palliative. And also I'd advise you to wait for directions from the person who indicated the remedy before you decide to give her more doses.

If you take a look at Anxious99 case, you will see what's my point: that we can learn a lot from these both cases and more I get convinced that homeopathy is a beautiful thing.

Hey worriedmommy,

Please do not give another dose of Phosphorus, keep waiting.

Now that her body has started to respond, she will get much benefit from this single dose.

No more doses, update me in 1 week from now.

I would expect further improvements by then.

Good luck,
Sameer.

sameervermani last decade
We haven't had any further improvement. On days that she hasn't slept much her stuttering is still rather bad, on other days it's not really an issue. She has started talking slower in general to try to prevent the stuttering from occurring.

worriedmommy last decade
Dear worriedmommy,

Please give her a SINGLE dose of Phosphorus 200c, dissolve 2 pellets in 120 ml water, and give her 1 spoon from there just once.

Restrictions above still hold.

Update me in 1 week after this dose.

sameervermani last decade
I'm back to update, I apologize for not doing it sooner.

The stuttering went almost completely away, and was gone for several months.

She has started to very mildly stutter again in the last month. Since my previous post, she has become a very proficient reader, and never stutters when she's reading aloud, but she does when she's talking about the story.

Overall, she's much improved, but I didn't know if I need to be proactive to prevent it from coming back completely, or if she may just be going through a developmental stage at this point where her mind and vocals aren't always in sync.

Thank you so much for your help!

worriedmommy last decade
Excellent !

For future, I have a small request, that you report back on time. I feel, as prescribers, we deserve to be told whether the prescription gave benefit or not.

Please procure Phosphorus 1M, and give her a SINGLE dose of as follows, dissolve 2 pellets in 120 ml water, and give her 1 spoon from there just once.

Restrictions above still hold.

Update me in 1 week after this dose.

sameervermani last decade
As I said before, I do apologize for not reporting back sooner.
The cause was that we have moved twice due to work relocations since October, and I wanted to wait until things returned to normal to see if her mild stuttering would go away once we were settled. An update in the interim may have been inaccurate as we were all rather stressed with the moves and acting atypically.

I will let you know after a week once I have obtained the Phos 1M and she has taken a dose.

worriedmommy last decade
Well, after a week her stutter seems much improved again. It is still there slightly.

In the time while we were waiting for the remedy to arrive, her stuttering got much worse in the course of just a few days.

I gave her a tablespoon of the Phos 1m dissolved in water as you described and she has held to all the restrictions. I've never told her that the remedies are for her stuttering. As I said, it is still there slightly, but not as pronounced. It took about 5 days to get to this point.

worriedmommy last decade
Hi ,

Good to know that response has started. Please continue to wait.

You should wait for about 3 weeks for the 1M dose to take full effect.

Update me when it has been 3 weeks from the dose.

Good luck.
