This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Hey Spowell, how are you doing?

The long-acting and nonsedating H1 antihistamine loratadine (Claritin) is now available without a prescription and one 10 mg tablet per day may be an alternative for some patients.
These drugs, which include fexofenadine (Allegra) and cetirizine (Zyrtec), are available by prescription. They are more expensive than nonprescription antihistamines but need to be taken only every 12-24 hours and usually do not cause disruptive sleepiness. Long-acting H1 antihistamines: These may also be used for mild cases of hives and angioedema.

Severe reactions: Do not attempt to treat severe reactions or to wait it out at home. Go immediately to the nearest emergency department or call an ambulance. If you can identify the cause of the reaction, prevent further exposure.

H1- and H2-blocking drugs: Hives that do not respond to type H1 and H2 antihistamines may be treated with another type of drug. An example is doxepin (Sinequan). These drugs are intended as antidepressants, but they also have strong antihistamine effects, blocking both H1 and H2 histamine reactions. They can be very sedating. The FDA has not approved treating hives with these drugs, but most physicians feel this is an appropriate use.

For excellent patient education resources, visit eMedicine's Allergy Center and Skin, Hair, and Nails Center. Also, see eMedicine's patient education article Hives and Angioedema.

Hives is better known as Urticaria. Its most prominent symptom is the ITCH.

It is best - from a homeopathic point of view - to avoid pharmaceutical intervention .

I give below an item I composed on the subject.

Generalized Pruritis
Its relation to disease of the central nervous system.

As a miasmatic homeopath one is compelled to accept the life force as a practical system that can be diminished by such diverse agents as stress , unbalanced diet , the inappropriate intake of chemicals such as tranquilizers , azodyes , antibiotics , vaccines. The life force can be stimulated and increased by a relaxed life style , a balanced wholefood and organic vegetable diet and the exclusion of many drugs and chemicals, which are unfortunately, the lifeblood and profit of commercial pharmaceutical companies. Interesting as the pro's and con';s of the above may be it is all based upon a grouping of hereditary genetic characteristics that largely determine how a weakened constitution/ immunity will react in terms of symptoms produced when under pressure or attack.
I do not have an axe to grind as I do not believe it to be important weather homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, reflexology etc. is used to treat the symptoms , so long as that treatment is effective. I merely wish to point out that homeopathy in its miasmatic grouping has had for some 200 years a theoretical structure that accounts for facts as yet mysterious to orthodox medicine.
In Harrison's " Principles of Internal Medicine " 9th Edition, P. 247. under Generalized Pruritis (itch) it states " There is not one single agent that is effective for generalized pruritis." (itch). This is the statement of an internationally recognized orthodox medical textbook. Since the late 1700/early 1800's the progenitor of modern homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann , put generalized pruritis as the prime symptom and head of the homeopathic class or grouping named PSORIC. I will not bore you with the details of this psoric grouping but wish to draw your attention to an interesting recent development in ' mysterious phenomena ' .
" Scrapie " is so called because for some 200 years or more it has affected sheep, who damage precious fleece by rubbing against posts , rocks and anything handy to ease their itch , or "generalized pruritis ". It has now been shown that Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (B.S.E) is related to Scrapie ( Veterinary Record vol. 123 p 407.) . BSE was identified 3 years ago and now affects some 600 farms in England and Wales. It is generally agreed that a sub molecular "PRION " agent is be involved '. Scrapie and B.S.E are members of a cluster of slow viral agents -affecting the central nervous system. In humans such agents appear in the fatal "Creutzfeldt Jakob diseases (connected to AIDS ) and in KURU, where it is apparently transmitted by the brains that cannibals eat. All these diseases have the characteristic that they produce large numbers of tiny protein fibres as they progressively destroy brain cells.
These are known as ' Scrapie associated fibrils ' that can only be seen by an electron microscope. It is noteworthy that scientists investigating Alzheimer's disease describe a protein problem in the cell processing within the brain " This piece of protein known as A4 is commonly found in Alzheimer patients tangled into fibres within nerve cells and in plaques outside them, interfering with the nervous function. It may be the final cause of the disability."
In homeopathic theory Hering's Law was first postulated in the early 1800's by Prof. Constantine Hering of the USA .It states that " The direction of disease is inwards and upwards and the direction of cure is downwards and outwards." So that under homeopathic treatment any symptom that either moves deeper into the body and off the surface , or towards the head may be considered dangerous, whilst any eruption upon the skin , or discharge from a lower orifice , or neurological symptom moving from the head towards the feet would bee considered favorable. It will then be seen that any medical treatment that drives skin conditions off the surface, or cures ' inflammation such as urethritis proctitis etc. with antibiotics , all tend to drive disease symptoms inwards and upwards. The exact direction of these inwardly driven forces will be determined by the hereditary genetic " path of least resistance ".

are the hives always there or do they appear at certain times?
where are the hives and can you describe what they look like?
do they itch, burn, sting - or is there another sensation present you can describe?
are they better or worse for warmth/cool/heat/washing?
what sort of washing powder is used for your clothes/sheets? what sort of soap do you use?

erika last decade
they always appear at night and about 90% of the time they disapper by the time i wake up on the morning.

they appear on my thighs (all around my top part of leg) and occasionally on my upper torso.

they itch so much!

i would say i feel a bit itchy after having a shower but that itching goes after about 20 minutes.

good point. my mum thinks it is the washing up powder or the shower gel. at the moment we wash our clothes with non-biological powder to see if that has an affect. to be honset we changed about 6 months ago and ever since, the hives has cut down to about half as bad as it was.

i have currently changed my shower gel to using normal soap to see if that makes a difference. i will post again in the next few days to see how bad it has come up.

by the way thank you for all the people that have replied, i need help desperately

sounds a good idea to stop the shower gel - when you get a soap make sure it is perfume free and as natural as possible. I use soap as little as possible (believe it or not you can wash with just water!) and if I use soap I find an olive oil soap is good, although it is a bit difficult to rinse. It is good that changing washing powder has helped - make sure also that this is perfume-free and avoid using any fabric conditioners (even the ones to 'freshen up' the clothes that people put in the dryers). Incidentally - it is worth checking the washing machine rinses well - my old washer left suds in the final rinse and it made a big difference to my skin when i did an extra rinse for the washes (got cheaper to get a new machine in the end, what with the cost of extra rinses!!!)....
Perhaps it would be an idea also to regularly hoover (vacuum clean) your mattress - or do you do that already?
Let me know if it improves or if you still need help after this.

Well hey...bkdaniels is flapping his allopathic wing agin...
--------------------

RHUS TOXICODENDRON or Rhus Tox is commonly used to help this condition.

If it is a wide-spread itch/rash that itches, usually the Urtica U.

If it is a spotted, like quarters, flat bumps all over, it is usually Rhus T.

You are allergic to something you are using or eating.

Stop all wheat for awhile. (NO breads) At least one month. Wheat is the color in sodas. Maltodextrin is wheat, carmel color is wheat, most soy sauce is wheat. Then try a bit after a month to see if you react.

I have found over time that the thing one loves to eat the most is the culprit. Are you crazy about peanut butter? This could be it.

Think in these terms and I feel you will be able to figure it out.

Once a woman called me to say her father suffered badly from headaches. After conversation, we decided to take the milk away for 10 days and then at the end of 10 days he drank half a glass of milk. He developed an extreme sick headache.

Please keep posting and let us know your progress.

Blessings, Sabra

Call on us when the allopathic suppression causes something else to show up and give you a problem.

This is why there are many alternative medicines on the market.

You are too young to realize the suppression as not good, but keep this information in mind for the future for you or for your future family.

Blessings, Sabra
