Chronic Knee Pain

I am a 26 yr old male, and have had chronic knee pain since I can remember. I have a family history on my fathers side of 'bad knee's' one cousin who was active in sports had double knee replacements at age 20.

My knee generally hurts when it is bent, I am unable to sit with my legs crossed. It is excrutiatingly painfull to sit on my knees and I have learned how to sit on my hips since I was a preteen. Generally they hurt if I exert too much pressure on them, squating is painfull, and it is most painfull when i am all the way down and trying to push myself back up. I generally rub the area, but it does not effect the intensity of the pain.

I am not in search of relieving the pain but more to help the tissue and muscles in my knee so that I no longer have the problem.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions. I am new to the forum and if you wouldn't mind 'dumbing down' the advice to a novice level I would greatly appreciate it.
