Antidotes
I am a novice in homeo. Please clarify this. I am looking at 'Boericke's Materia Medica'. I am confused to understand 'Antidotes. For example, under the section of Arsenic Album, Antidotes mentioed are: Op., Carb-V., Chin., Hep., Nux-V.What does this mean? Does it mean - ARS antidotes Op.? OR Op. to be used to antidote ARS.? Similary..ARS antidotes Chin. or Chin. to be used to antidote ARS?
Sorry...if its a silly question. But I believe in saying 'Dont know' when I don't know. Thanks in advance.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
The term 'antidote' refers to the reason you are giving the remedy, which is to cure an unwanted reaction to another remedy.
The list of 'antidotes' you find in our materia medicas are simply suggestions by the author either based on their experience with such reactions, or they have been told the remedy would be useful by someone else (who presumably they trust).
For a remedy to antidote another, it must be similar in some way. Anitdoting uses the same principles as homoeopathic treatment of disease - what a remedy can cause it can cure - the law of similars. In fact, because the law of similars is the primary guide to choosing a remedy under any circumstances, you actually need to use the symptoms the patient has NOT mechanically give the remedies in such lists. There will be other choices for antidoting not in that list. The individual reaction always takes precedence over what the books say.

Because people often do not understand that a remedy still needs to be individually selected, they can make a bad reaction much worse by adding a new (but not suitable) remedy to the problem. It is important to understand that the principles of homoeopathy are always to be applied if you wish to help the patient, and those lists are just a reminder to look at certain remedies as possibilities.
