Alopecia/hair loss

Could anybody give me advice on how to help/treat alopecia? My husband just found a bald patch about the size of a walnut a little behind his hear, rest of his hair seems unaffected. We don't know when it started as he says he's never noticed it until tonigh.

His diet has always been a bit poor (snacking on a lot of junk/sugary food, consuming almost only fizzy drinks during the day etc) although around 6 weeks ago he's kicked off some of his bad habits, he now almost only water, snacks less and has lost almost 2 stone as a result (I believe that a lot of this was water retention, also his abdomen looks a lot less bloated)... could the alopecia be a result of this sudden change?

He hasn't seen his GP yet as he only just noticed it tonight but I wouldn't be surprised if he was just given some pills and sent home. He hasn't used any shampoo/conditioner for a very long time by the way. Thanks.
