Hair loss with itchy, burning scalp.

I am a 29 year old woman and for the past year my hair has been falling out. The scalp is itchy, and it burns sometimes. It feels better when I itch it. Whole hairs are coming out and I have lost half my head of hair now. I may have a thyroid/adrenal condition and most certainly have insulin resistance issues. Any advice would be appreciated.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
To give a little more information, I do suffer with some depression and anxiety. I also have acne and hirsutism. My periods are regular and of normal flow. I am getting my test resuts back for thyroid/adrenal in another few weeks.

I've seen such fabulous turnarounds for people who ask for help on this forum, and so I am hoping I can also get some excellent advice!

Thank you in advance.

sex: female
age: 29
height: 5ft (1.5m)
weight: 170
country: united states, oregon

1. describe your main suffering? (describe symptoms)
my scalp itches and burns, with a lot of hair coming out. half the hair is gone. now my eyebrows and eyelashes are itching and falling out too.

2. what other physical/mental sufferings in past, you had?
in the past i've had postpartum depression, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety. now i have obesity (with the abilitiy to lose weight), insomnia, tiredness in the mornings through to afternoon then more energy in late afternoon through to midnight.

3. what mental sufferings / feelings do you have associated with your physical
sufferings?
i worry a lot about going bald, and i miss my hair. i am concerned with my weight as well much of the time.

4. what exactly do you feel when you are at your worst?
i feel overwhelmed with my health problems, like i will never get any better, and i feel like staying home and never going anywhere.

5. when did it all start? can you connect it to any past event or disease?
the hair fall started 6 months after i quit taking the antidepressant effexor xr (which disrupted my hormones quite a bit--i had 70 day cycles and a lot of depression/anxiety which resolved within 6 months of quitting the drug). about three months after quitting the drug i began growing hair on my upper thighs, upper lip, arms, and chin. the itching began in december when my mother died (i was not devastated about her death but still stressed and shocked) and i was very stressed about going to texas to settle her estate (because it was far away from me and i like to stay in my own town). i had many headaches while there and could not eat much. in the whole month of december i did not eat much. in january also i did not eat much and was stressed with insomnia because we were moving in february. once we moved i began eating again and could sleep through the night but the itching and hair fall continued.

6. which time of the day you are worst?
mornings through the early afternoons for mind symptoms--my scalp itchiness seems to be anytime of day and there is no time when it is worse.

7. what are the things which aggravate your suffering and which are those which
ameliorate the same?
if i do not wash my hair everyday it seems the itching is worse, putting lavender essential oil mixed with aloe vera gel on the scalp seems to make it better for a little while but does not last all day.

8. do your think your sufferings have relation to any external stimuli (like, change of
place) or any internal biological changes in the body, like, menses (in females)?
it might--i had 70 day cycles after quitting the drug, and it took 6 months for them to normalize, then the hair fall started even though the menses were normal by then. the itchiness did not start until december. i was very stressed out in december/january.

9. when do you feel better, during hot weather or cold weather, humid or dry weather?
i don't observe feeling better during any particular type of weather.

10. describe your general mental set up? are you moody, arrogant, mild, agreeable
changeable, nervous, suspicious, easily offended, quiet, arguing, irritating, lazy etc.
i am irritable, nervous, like to be quiet, get upset at small things, very lazy (no energy at all), my brain works slowly so studying is very hard, and i constantly worry about my hair.

- how do you feel before or during a thunderstorm?
i love thunderstorms and the time right before them feels very calming.

- do you like being consoled during your tough times?
yes

- are you sensitive to external stimuli like smell, noise, light etc?
no

- do you have any typical habit or gesture like nail biting, causeless
weeping, talking to one self etc?
i chew on the collar of my shirt sometimes for days on end, then it will stop for a few weeks, then start again.

- how do you feel about your friends, family, your children and especially your
husband / wife?
i am irritated with them much of the time and like it when they are gone during the day. i only have a few friends that never irritate me.

11. what are your fears and do you dream of any situation repeatedly?
i think my husband will leave me a lot--even though there's no reason to believe this. and i think about and dream about being bald. sometimes i also dream about having my thick hair back again, but that's rare.

12. what do you crave for in food items and what are your aversions?
when i have cravings it is for salty foods that are high carbohydrates. like tacos or hamburgers.

13. how is your thirst: less, normal or excessive?
it is less much of the time, but once a month for a few days it will be excessive.

14. how if your hunger: less, normal or excessive?
less--i have a hard time eating even when i am very hungry. my appetite is not good at all--in fact the month before the itching started i had not eaten much for the whole month. food makes me nauseous and i have a hard time digesting it, it seems to just sit in my stomach for a long time.

15. is there any kind of food which your body can’t stand?
seafood/fish mostly.

16. is your sweat normal or less or more? where does it sweat more: head, trunk or
limbs?
my sweat is normal, but i have odor a lot even right after the shower.

17. how is your bowel movement and stool type?
it is usually normal but my naturopathic doctor has me on a lot of magnesium and that has made them very soft, which she said is normal for the amount of magnesium i take (400mg twice a day)

18. how well do you sleep? do you have a particular posture of sleeping?
i like to sleep on my sides, and it is hard to fall asleep and stay asleep.

19. do you think you are able to satisfy your sexual desires in general?
before the itchiness i could, but now i cannot.

20. how do you think you are different from others, if at all?
i am very different in the way i perceive the world, i feel more like a foreigner here even though this is where i was born/raised. everyone is interested in television programs and movies and the latest fashions and i am not. i feel like the people around me are very shallow and not in touch with the world.

21. what medications have been taken earlier by you to treat the diseases and do you
have any particular symptom surfacing after the medication? i switched to a rosemary/nettle bar shampoo and i put lavender oil mixed in aloe vera on the scalp after the shower. i am going to start using borax shampoo with citric acid rinse to see if this helps further, and i have begun rinsing with acv/h2o2 to see if this also helps.

22. nature of work, what do you do for living?
i am a housewife with one disabled child, and i also go to school when my child is at school.

23. what major diseases are running in your family?
diabetes, schizophrenia, autism, heart disease, gerd (a reflux disease), depression, anxiety, alcoholism

24. describe, how do you look like? describe your overall appearance
i am short and fat but not obese, blonde hair, blue eyes, i have acne on my face and my lips are always chapped, most of the fat is on my abdomen and arms, my hair is usually thick and wavy (but now is thin).

25. attached here your photographs of the affected area. (if required/optional)

26. (only for females)

please answer the following questions:
(please give details of your past menstruation if you have attained menopause.)
- are the periods early, regular or late in general? how long do they last?
they are now every 24-28 days, and only last a few days. before quitting the drug they were 70 days and the bleeding was a week long.

- do you suffer from any kind of physical or mental discomfort before, during or after
the periods?
yes, i feel timid and weak before ovulation, then i feel good after ovulation, then right before my period starts i am tired a lot and angry and i crave salt and carbohydrates a lot.

- is the flow scanty, normal or excessive?
it is normal. while taking the drug it was heavy.

- is the blood thick bright red or pale watery?
it goes through stages: first is pale watery, then bright red with lots of flow, then dark and thick with clots, then the flow stops.

- do you notice any clots in the flow?
yes

27. any special points you feel necessary to mention?
i've always had thick hair and so did my mother/father, no baldness in the family. and so i know this must be some kind of illness instead of a genetic thing. i thought it might be hormones since i am growing hair like a man as well, my periods are now regular but the cycles are short and the flow only takes a few days. now that the itching has started i wonder if it is fungal as well as hormonal.

i am cold a lot, and i never have an appetite even when i am very hungry and my blood sugar is falling. i also like to be in the dark a lot--i prefer artificial light to natural light and am inside all day long.

i lost 40lbs/18kg last year, very quickly. diet and exercise used to achieve this.

i also had a very stressful time mid-november when i did work for a humanitarian organization during a pretty gruesome event that happened during that time. i had to take ignatia in order to get over it as i had ptsd waking up thinking i was being bombed, and i could not sleep. i was on the computer doing the work for 11 days on end without eating much and almost no sleeping.

i have an aversion to touching/washing my hair because i am afraid more of it will fall out.
