OK I am scared to death that I will have bald spots in a few years. I am a 22 year old female and I have been experiencing hair loss since I was 18. My hair used to be extremely thick but now it feels thin. I have gone to the dermatologist and he diagnosed me with sebhorreic dermatitis. However, the products I used don't seem to help. I have used olux, loprox, and diprolene and my hair still sheds a lot (theres hair all over my stuff and floor) and I have scalp pain in the crown of my head (upper back part of my head). I also have dandruff and itchiness. Sometimes, I feel the itchiness on my face too. Can it be something other than sebborheic dermatitis. I already checked with the doc if it is my thyroid and did blood work and everything is fine. what if it's a neurological problem. Can someone please help!

I don't want to over alarm anyone but for the lady with the and bad fatigue blurry vision and hair loss I would read up on lyme disease , mercury posoning and MS that was already stated before. Seems that these three can mimic each other. I also would seriously consider how your ph is and possibly llok into ph balancing. A too acidic body that might be ill just invites more ilness. Alkalizing often helps.Good luck

Hello Everyone

I am in desperate and depress someone help us who already saw positive results from any treatments. I am male 30 years old and experiencing same symptoms for awhile now. I am experiencing same symptoms that users LucyB22
Lucy this is what I have similar with you.
1. The itching on my scalp comes and goes as it pleases. Nothing really makes it subside…I just kind of wait it out. Sometimes it almost feels like little bugs or worms are crawling in my scalp.
2. It’s a combination. In some areas, my scalp lools very dry and there are scales. Ain other areas my scalp feels moist. There is no oozing, but if I scratch my head, I get a lot of residue under my finger nail.
3. There is no eruption, my scalp is just red. It flares up sometimes and becomes red and hot.
4. It is general thinning all over. But, there is some sort of correlation between the burning and itching and the hair loss. For example, I get the most burning at my temples and there my hair is very very thin. Also, it burns a lot in the crown of my head. My hair texture has also changed a lot. My hair is very limp.
5. I used to be a happy person. Now, I am more sullen. I am definitely more sluggish.

From pact12345
1. I too have the exact same thing. Hair loss, achy arms, legs, etc. Pact I share same pain in my arms and legs from time to time.
From Neda28
1. I also get some pain at the back of my sculp and there my hair is very very thin.
From Angie60
1. I also have a lot of stress and anxiety which I am told could also contribute to all of this. I have blurry vision, muscle pain and weakness, headaches, depression, etc. I came to this site looking for answers
From bdc629
1. Sometimes I do find small bumps that feel like pimples. Is there anything I can do to save my hair?????

I feel everyone's pain as I am experiencing this also. I am a 40 year old african american woman. I had very thick and long hair. Last year I noticed that my hair was very thin in the crown area. If I parted my hair, the part was maybe a half of an inch wide. I went to a dermatologist and he diagnosed me with seborrheic dermatitis and alopecia as well. He had the audacity to tell me well it's just a small patch so don't worry. He prescribed me a steroid ointment, biotin, and vitamin e. I am a cosmetology student so I told him that I didn't believe that it was that because I also had small bumps that were sore to touch. Anyhow one year later, I still have the same thing going on except it's not a small spot anymore. It's about the size of the bottom of an 8 oz. styrofoam cup. And I've notice a small area beginning on the other side of my head. Last night I got on the computer and researched hair loss. And my suspicions were correct. I saw a photo of people who had folliculitis decalvans. This can be caused by bacteria or a fungus (Staph). It infects the hair follicle causing swelling, thus the pimple like bumps. Unless it is treated promptly, it causing scarring so the hair permanently falls out. It's also called 'barber's itch'. I know that some of you have seen men with very low hair cuts but have something like large keloid scars on their scalp. Well this is the culprit. It is also contagious. You can affect other areas of your head as well as others if you share the same hair implements. I also looked up information about possible hair transplant. One website stated that even if you have the symptoms under control and get a hair transplant that it may affect the transplanted area and the symptoms would come back cause the transplant to fail. So for those of you who have symptoms such as mine (scales, itchiness, pimples, sore spots, hot areas, and bald spots where some areas are super smooth to the touch but other areas have hard nodules), it's pretty good chance that you have folliculitis decalvans. I just wish that I had been diagnosed earlier. Oh by the way, folliculitis decalvans can affect the face and skin also. If anyone find out any information on the possibility of reversing this condition, please share it with us. I'm not that saavy with uploading photos, but I'll try later to show a photo of my scalp. If I can't you can always go online and see photos of people suffering with folliculitis decalvans.

Okay so I have been having the same symptoms for 2 months now...my scalp is red...it itches and it aches and burns and is sore to touch...also there are red bumps and hair loss... I went to a great dermo today after going to a complete moron for a doctor...and basically this is what it boils down to...its a yeast infection of the head...some steroids can make it worse and irritate so it depends on what your being treated with if your wrongfully diagnosed you could be making it worse...here are som things to try naturally because i know it started to help me before i went on the first doctors steroids...T tree oil...Neem Oil take orally and also buy the topical oil to put on scalp...try a probiotic you can get all this at a health store...probiotics put good flora in your intestines to help fight against yeast overgrowth...other than that you can try apple cider vinager rinses for the scalp as well...the hair loss is atributed to the infection on the scalp...hair will grow back once the problem is fixed...Ive just been put on an oral antibiotic that was free at publix market...and she gave me a perscription oil. ill write later to tell if the results actually help resolve this issue! Im also going to get back on the neem and t tree oil...that was working...

I have fine curly hair (normally). In Dec 08 I colored my hair & did not get it all rinsed out. After I left the house, I could feel the burn. I got back home ASAP & rinsed. Shortly after my scalp began to itch and I got extremely dry hair with white flakes which sometimes became pasty. Between then & now April 2009 I lost a lot of hair via root or broken off, lost 1/4' hairline by forehead and my hair lost virtually all it's curl. I had white flakes and no hair oil. My hair loss was isolated to my skull. To rid myself of the white pasty flakes at the end of March/early April I used dandruff shampoos. I was getting spots of wet oil on my head now that the white film was gone. **AND THEN** One evening close to midnight I used a scalp exfoliant. The next morning, six am I had a fire-ant burn and bloods spots on my scalp, vascular collapse to the left side of my face and swelling to the right side. Over the course of the day the skin on my face came back up about 90%, but it looks like I’m going to have a facial indentation scar. I went to the DR. and was diagnosed with Seb Dermatitis & believes I had a chemical burn (despite my scalp looked normal but with red blood spots). She prescribed ketoconazole and said to stay away from harsh chemical shampoos. She believed the shampoo got on my face and dehydrated it. I'm still loosing hair, but now closer to a more reasonable amount. My hair burns intermittently, seemingly when oil is coming out of my pores. It looks like my hairline (bangs & front) are growing new spots of little hairs returning where 1/4' was lost. I'm now washing with Burts Bees Baby shampoo, blotting my bangs with Betadine (antibacterial/anti fungal) & rinsing. I started the ketoc. and it helps the burn until more oil comes out. But since switching to NON SLS shampoo my hair is returning to it's ultra curly state with just 3 washes. I'm EXTREMELY GENTLE combing as it will fall out. I researched some of the chemicals and SLS SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE is in 90% of shampoo (and other products) - a hazardous substance. It kills your good bacteria making a breeding ground for other bacteria & fungus among other major medical problems like messing with hormones. I'm also wondering if my body is getting rid of some of the sulphur causing the burn (in addition to fungus). I didn't have these problems when I was using Aveda & Burts Bees. (I too have memory loss & fatigue.) Also - we have hard water so I have always washed my hair in the sink with purified water isolating shampoo contact with my head only. All other hair is fine. (For body washing I have used Grandpa Pine Tar soap for 10 years as everything else gave me red splotches.) I'm going to try the tree oil. My Dr. did not test (no blood work) for anything. Despite the fact *I think* I know what the problem is, I'm still scared about the chemical exposure.

REMEDY: I HAVE AN INSTANT REMDEDY >>>> Background: I am a 40ish female that has suffered itchy scalp for years when my thick hair is long. It went away when I have had short hair and comes back when my hair gets past my shoulders. I tend to wear a ponytail, and don't put it up wet but still terrible maddening itch with crawly feeling. I've tried the usual: dandruff shampoos, coal tar shampoos, tea tree oil, cortisone liquid treatment, etc. Nothing worked. It would keep me awake, I'd have to wash my hair in the middle of the night...Then I happened upon a natural remedy. Get a squeeze bottle with a narrow pointed tip (like you'd use for applying hair dye or mustard/ketchup) and fill it with straight APPLE CIDER VINEGAR from the grocery store. IN the shower, before wetting squirt all over scalp very generously and massage in. If you've been scratching this is going to burn, it is tolerable but you'll be gritting your teeth. It will stop in a minute or two. Be careful to not let it drip in your eyes. Let it sit about 5 minutes, and apply more while waiting. Then shampoo and shower as normal. Don't worry, you will NOT smell like vinegar. You'll have instant relief when your hair is dry. Try not to touch your head or scratch to let your scalp calm down. (we tend to do this even when it doesn't itch.) Repeat daily for a few days, then back up to once every week or two. Do more frequently if it acts up. Please share this info with other sufferers.

I am surprised to see that I have the exact same symptoms, even with the vision issue and skin in other parts of the body being irritated. This comes and goes with no real pattern. My hair starts falling out, then stops and will grow for a couple of days and the cycle starts again. My doctors think I am making this stuff up and have just treated me for scalp irritation, but it does not work. Any information about what could cause this would help.

Ok Here goes my story...I won't be repeating the burning, itching, loss of hair and so on...I have had the same symptoms for the past 2 years...The onset is much linked to stress during my postgraduate and working at the same time...
I went to see a dermatologist (supposed to be one of the best in my small country) , he diagnosed Seborrheic dermatitis and gave me Dermatin (fluconazole Shampoo) after 3 months the symptoms had stayed the same...went back. When I told him about the symptoms I was quite surprised by his reaction ...he exclaimed 'impossible!!!'...'Well, if I was feeling the symptoms he should know better...this time he prescribed another shampoo (Sebowash) to be used for one week only and said was much more aggressive...2 weeks later no improvement at all... and the hair just keeps on falling...went to a second dermato...this one prescribed minoxydil for hair regrowth and Neutrogena Tgel Fort for the itching and burning...The neutrogena had no effect on the burning but surprisingly enough the minoxidil did one hell of a job...my hair got a boost and refurnished on the crown..you do suffer a little low blood pressure during the day ...but heck...and as it also exfoliates dead skin on your scalp it stopped the burning COMPLETELY and even reduced the itching like 90%...this leaves me with just enough time to find what my problem really is... and you know what I find the most dumb in the whole story...I got different diagnostics with the doctors and none of the two took a sample of my scalp for lab analysis and would rather indulge in wrong diagnosis and giving inappropriate drugs...
At this point I am convinced that my problem is by some kind of infection of the epidermis rather than deeper below...firstly because the exfoliation of dead skin gives me great relief...secondly is that I shaved my hair a couple of time and pimples on my fore head just vanish like magic...for one thing am sure its NOT fungal in origin...
So that's for my part...the search continues...I will be posting if I find anything of value....and willl of course keep an eye on what you guys come up with...
Cheers,

POSSIBLE TREATMENT, CURE & CAUSE - FOR SOME. This has been a long painful journey. I prayed not only for a treatment but to understand the cause. I thank GOD for this answer after losing my hair for approximately ten months. This entry may or may not apply to you, but I do ask that you consider the following blog and also ask yourself, “Why now, why all of the sudden is my body doing this? What changed?” Ask your Dr. about my ideas/remedies. Try all new things in AM instead of bedttime to monitor for any possible unwanted reactions. ___INITIAL RELIEF. At the height of pain and hair loss I discovered that the following DAILY TECHNIQUE squelched the pain and lessened the itching and hair loss. 1) Wash hair daily. 2) Apply Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar in a spray bottle. In the shower spray entire dry scalp, rub on forehead and get behind ears. Keep on for five minutes. This alleviated a lot of itch, not all. This I believe is to kill bacteria. I chose Heinz as they guarantee it is NOT produced from petroleum like some other brands. 3) I used Grandpa Brands Pine Tar Shampoo. It does not contain sugar or SLS or other chemicals that exasperate the condition. I shampooed twice in hot water and rinsed with cold - contract scalp skin to hold onto hair - hair more fragile when wet and hot. 4) Avoid possible cross contamination. The scalp is severely agitated so do not touch feet or toes and then scalp without washing hands thoroughly (I used Grandpa Brands bar soap). 5) Conditioners - I only conditioned the ends of the hair - with an organic brand - away from the scalp to avoid getting any sugar catalyst on scalp that would promote yeast. 6) After drying my hair with a blow dryer (keep hair and scalp dry to inhibit dandruff or fungus) 7) I then applied Monostat3, an internal vaginal yeast infection cream that is OTC (over the counter) and comes in tubes at bedtime. (Miconazole produced a horrific headache and was barely effective.) The initial application was such an unbelievable relief. I had used two whole boxes (6 tubes) and the itch was gone. My use dwindled as this came under control and eventually I found the catalyst creating the onset of this condition. The azole family of creams (like flucanazole shampoo) is for treating fungus. Dandruff is the same thing as fungus/yeast to my understanding. 8) Avoid touching scalp and if need to itch is intense, use knuckle and/or spot on Miconazole3. (No scratching with nails - bacteria can transfer or breaking of weak skin on scalp.) ___INVESTIGATION OF THE HOME.__WATER. We: 1) tested our water (any unit such as a faucet, a water softener, a water heater, pipes, a shower head, etc. can become infected with black mold, bacteria, arsenic, etc. City water or well can be infected, 2) we bleached all the shower heads and tubs and pipes, 3) we installed new home water filters, 4) installed a new pressure tank to flush out anything in pipes, and 5) installed a new drinking water purification system. This did not produce much of any change for my hair. __AIR. We then threw out the old vacuume and purchased a new one. Amazing difference in sinuses, but none with my hair condition. We added a Honeywell vaccumable air filter in the bedroom. The vacuume had been 15 yrs. old and had been infected with something. It was also failing and blowing out a significant amount of incoming debris. __BEDDING. DO NOT GO TO BED WITH WET HAIR. It promotes yeast on scalp. It also promotes an ecosystem in your pillow. We threw out all pillows with new. Bed was already covered with protector. All bedding washed with 160F water. Again, this helped significantly with sinuses, hair unchanged. __PERSONAL PRODUCTS. Threw out all old shampoo and hair products 12m and older. Some were older than I thought when adding up the time. Ended use of all cosmetic products except eyeliner and mascara. Switched to a non-aluminum deodorant, don’t wear any if I don’t have to. ACID REFLUX. To avoid acid reflux slow down and chew food good - increases acid in stomach, alters gut, etc. Sleep in inclined position to get more rest. No eating before bed. No foods that relax angle of esoph. attaching to stomach. __INTERNET SEARCH- GETTING CLOSER. I tried a box of Para-cleanse (about 12 days) as internet hair loss suggested parasites as a possibility. Statistically 1 in 4 Americans are infected per Dr Oz. Noticed some improvement. Dropped sugar and flour from diet. Began juicing fruits/veggies. No GMO. No artificial colors, flavors. No chocolate, etc. All organic food. Continued with cayenne pepper pills. Pressing 4 raw garlic cloves daily and consuming. This initially caused a euphoric floating feeling and release. Garlic causes acid reflux, relaxes stomach tube and it straightens, ended use. Chopped up some cilantro and parsley. Used GNC NOW Fresh Green Black Walnut Wormwood Complex (droplet tincture). This really helped. Hair loss continued, but slows down. Palms are no longer orange. Lips turn from white to pink. Clinically tested 3x for parasites, but all negative. Ask - why the improvement? Ended up eliminating intestinal obstruction. Unexplained weight loss ends and parasite tests negative so I ended the anti-parasitic regiment...and all the hair symptoms exploded again. I was on to the right ‘cure track’ but was wrong on the self-diagnosis. Started up again with two week regimens of the NOW tincture and it started helping the condition again. Hair loss slowed down. __MORE RESEARCH. I searched my miscellaneous efforts to see what else they could also treat. The garlic, cilantro and parsley are natural chelators. Cilantro (2 tbsp day for 3 months highly effective) ___TREATING HEAVY METAL POISONING AND CHEMICAL POISONING. 1) I started 30 day treatment of Heavy Metal Cleanse by Renew Life. This helped out a lot. IT reduced hair loss with natural chealtors by 50%. 2) Drinking 32 oz of water 3x day. Helps with detox and eliminating waste. Improves overall mood and feeling. 3) More sleep. I began to sleep after getting the obstruction out and getting a heavy duty night guard for tooth grinding. Dentist notices orange patch on roof of mouth is significantly less orange. 4) Hydrotherapy. Extremely hot shower chased with cold water produces brown hair dye coming out of hands and arms. Extremely painful. Have been taking photo diary of brown post-shower hands and arms. Sometimes a little comes out, sometimes a lot. As time has gone by I cannot endure the same heat. The skin must have been desensitized by heavy metal and chemicals. After all this time I am still producing color from hydrotherapy. Hot water droplets hitting hands works best. Create a distance. 5) I know chem poison is from long term use of hair color contact with skin. Browns and black colors are most toxic. Use of hair color and start of IBS within months of each other. Eliminate formaldehyde and formalin contact allergy items. Research where I’m getting heavy metal. Lifelong use of antacids ended, table salt switched to sea salt, aluminum cookware thrown out, a lot of corn syrup in products tainted with mercury, etc. Switch to 18/8 stainless. (I Never used plastic or heated plastic for anything.)
___STOPPING MY HAIR LOSS. I was diagnosed with TE. Telogen effluvium is a temporary hair loss. I BEGAN EXERCISING. I decided to start exercising lightly on an elliptical as I was feeling better. Up to this point with the extreme weight loss and severe fatigue I wasn’t moving a whole lot. My hair loss stopped within 48 hours. Here are the reasons why I think this happened. __a) PRODUCING SERITONIN & FLUSHING LONG-STANDING WASTE AND TOXINS OUT WITH SWEAT. My scalp never had sweat coming out. Thinking of IBS, the excrement can be pushed backwards from lack of seritonin. The intestines and skin both excrete waste. Exercising produces seritonin. I’m wondering if the same occurs in the skin in Seb Derm - the skin is messed up due to a lack of seritonin and needs a greater volume of sweat pushed into the right direction. Heavy metals and chem toxins WILL mess up the bowl as it will hormones. Does it also mess up the scalp? The days my scalp hurt were days I was hot from higher temps. Relief only came with a shower. The water was washing whatever was in the scalp off the surface. I believe the scalp is susceptible to yeast and bacteria when there is a metal or toxin load - as is the body. It lowers the immune function. __b) ILLNESS. Four minutes into a light workout my heart valves were clearly not functioning properly. It was as if they stayed open for about 30 seconds. I worked my way through it as it was painful, but a good pain. I had about 10 hard nodules show up in my left arm and about 100-150 hard nodules in my right arm. The right arm was in extreme pain for days afterwards. The 2 hour sleep for 12 months had an effect on adrenaline as I tried to continue life as normal without sleep. These odd adrenaline rushes at inappropriate times were felt in the heart. Adrenaline pulls calcium into the heart. Working-out flushed this out of the heart. (Broken Heart Syndrome.)
___RESULTS. I had to cut my hair short because it was like wire - unmanageable and would not curl. This helped in less hair-fall as the damaged part tangling up the 50% okay hair was eliminated. New hair is coming in and I now can style about 2” - 4” of it. The pods or itchy hair follicles don’t need working out of scalp continuously- one here or there, but virtually gone. I’ve recently begun using five or six squirts of hairspray and added a bit of flour into my diet. All dandruff was gone and virtually all itch gone until I reintroduced these - extremely sensitive to them. It has produced a very small bit of white matter (wet dandruff) on scalp and some itching at the hairline. (Dandruff (yeast) eats the sweat in the scalp as food.) WIth adding some flour (=sugar) I have some belly button pain with these additions and believe the link of unhappy intestines and unhappy scalp is direct for me with this condition. Added Vitamin D, most important vitamin to diet. Life is a lot better today than it was during my initial post. Heavy Metals take a long time to get out - will continue to be a long journey. I will post some links to some resources I thought were helpful next. I wish you all well in your journey.

It was late when I posted and am continuing here with some info and possible suspects. I skipped over discussing ADRENAL FATIGUE SYNDROME and jumped into Broken Heart Syndrome. AFS causes hair loss and food can assist in healing the adrenals. It is supposed to be more common the thought. (The Oct 2009 issue of Natural Solutions has an article and lists foods that heal and hinder.)

STRESS. My dermatologist wanted to know why I was so stressed. My memory has been so poor I couldn’t think of a single thing. He said, “The body doesn’t know the difference between mental and physical stress.” I concluded at that point that there was an internal problem stressing the body. He couldn’t find anything wrong with my scalp except for the TE. Once I had that workout with the calcium coming out of the heart, the mild Parkinson’s-like shaking in my hands ended immediately, the next day I had decreased hair loss, the second day the hair loss was insignificant and after that I’m counting maybe 10 strands per day which is obviously well within the normal range.

GENERALIZED TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM is where the follicle is not diseased, but has had its biologic clock reset and undergoes a normal involutional process. Usually no more than 50% of the patient’s hair is affected and it is random (not isolated patches missing). Scarring and inflammation are absent. Resting hairs on the scalp are retained for approximately 100 days before they are lost; therefore TE should occur approximately 3 months AFTER the event that terminated normal hair growth. (Postpartum hair loss - primarily frontotemporal occurs within 1 to 4 months after childbirth, loss can be significant, recovery occurs in less than 1 year. Hair growth usually returns to the pre pregnancy state.)

GENERALIZED TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM CAUSES: acute blood loss, childbirth, crash diets (inadequate protein), Drugs (coumarins, heparin, propanolol, vitamin A), high fever, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, physical stress, physiologic stress, severe illness (systemic lupus, trythematosus).

DRUGS ASSOC WITH TE: Aminosalicylic acid, amphetamines, bromocriptine, captopril, carbamazepine, cimetidine, coumadin, danazol, enalapril, etretinate, levodopa, lithium, metoprolol, propanolol, pyridostigmine, trimethadione.

OTHER TYPES OF EFFLUVIUM:
1) ANAGEN EFFLUVIUM. 80-90% of hair is gone. Hair bulb is pigmented (not white). Narrowed or fractured hair shaft. Cancer chemotherapeutic agents, poisioning, thallium (rat poison), arsenic, radiation therapy.
2) GENERALIZED PATCHY. Secondary syphilis (moth eaten alcopecia)
3) LOCALIZED. Androgenic alopecia (male and female patterned) hirsutism, alopecia areata, trichotillomania, traction alopecia, scarring alopecia (developmental defects aplasia cutis) physical injury (burns, pressure), infection (fungal: kerion, bacterial: folliculitis, furuncle), viral (herpes zoster, neoplasms (metastic carcinoma, sclerosing basal cell carcinoma, others, lupus erythematosus, lichen planus, cicatricial pemphigoid, scleroderma.

SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS. It can occur with hormonal changes, when certain fungus or yeast is on the skin, some do not have enough B VITAMIN in their diets. Heavy metals and chemical exposure are causes for dermatitis.

CREST. I had about $5K in testing to determine hair loss. The only positive test was a blood test - CENTROMERE B - which indicates a liver and collagen problem - Limited scleroderma (CREST SYNDROME). Mayo Clinic lists EXPOSURE TO TOXINS as a trigger to this syndrome for those people genetically predisposed: polyvinyl chloride (PVC aka #3 plastic), benzene, silica, and trichloroethylene. If you have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or Hashimoto’s disease you have an increased risk of developing limited scleroderma with chemical exposure. Our bodies have complex systems to drain toxins and metabolic wastes through the skin, kidneys, lungs, liver and colon. Exposure to food additives, synthetic personal care products, and chemicals in our water and air can cause the body to overload with chemicals. Most of the toxic load which cannot be detoxified is stored in the liver (right at your midsection) or isolated from the body’s systems in additional adipose tissue, or fat. Cleansing is about eating the right foods to get rid or purge the toxins. SO I’m also taking MILK THISTLE DROPS for liver cleansing. (I do not drink alcohol.)

IBS SIDE-NOTE. 1) Eating veggies, (specifically root veggies like carrots, yams, potatoes) should be ORGANIC. Some of these pesticides and chemicals are INSIDE the veggie and cannot be washed off. 2) Also, The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for hair coloring dye does not list intestinal disruption on the box, but does online - I think it’s with the Feds or OSHA. My box of hair color did list “natural” on the front though. LOL.

There are a lot of serious health conditions that can cause the hair to fall out like brain tumors and such (which I’m assuming that you already know). I ended up with no mainstream medical prescription to help the problem. So I’m going to continue with what is working - 1) AEROBIC EXERCISE DAILY, 2) drinking 100 oz. PURIFIED WATER to METABOLIZE TOXINS AND any excess estrogen if it’s there, 3) continue keeping a CLEAN DIET and 4) getting at least 7 HOURS OF SLEEP. The workouts are now making me actively sweat on the scalp area and I’m hoping the heart, if any damage, will heal itself. Question your surroundings. Question everything you are putting ON or IN your body.

This, in my opinion, is due to a fungus! My daughter was told she had the seborritis but I discovered that it is a fungus BROUGHT ON BY MILDEW/MOLD IN HER BATHROOM. At the same time that she started having these problems, she was also experiencning coughing and breaking out in acne that I thought was because she is 13! The fungus can get into your body and the only way to get rid of it is to clean up the fungus in your home, detox your body with antifungal foods, antifungal herbs,CONSTANTLY putting 'good bacteria, pure live yogurt, organic or Nutran probiotics...not all probiotics ARE ALIVE AND REFRIGERATED' back into your body daily, rinse/condition your hair with raw apple cider vinegar, and put PURE 100% oregano oil on your scalp daily!

She originally had the small red bumps on her scalp, flakiness, and then bald spots in her hair. I have followed this routine within 3 days the bumps were gone, only leaving redness, within a month her hair was growing back in. You must WASH SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK AT LEAST and you must use the pure oregano, 100% and you can get all the probiotics and oregano pure at iherb! You can use this CODE to get $5.00 off of your first order! Good luck with your hair and your home!

I'm not looking for a remedy, I'm looking for a diagnosis. Like most of the comments that I have read, I too suffer from an itching burning scalp with patches of hair loss, primarily to the left side of my head, but I have 'hot spots' around the back of my neck and some itching on the right side. I have been back and forth to many doctors, and have been tested multiple times for autoimmune diseases that could cause these symptoms, but all my blood work has come back normal. This has been going on for about a year and half now. I was originally diagnosed with cranial facial pain, but not totally convinced. I also recently found an article online written by a doctor calling it 'Burning Scalp Syndrome' I have all the symptoms. I would like to find out if anyone else out there has been diagnosed with this condition and if they know of doctors who specialize in it.

SO HAPPY HAIR IS GROWING BACK!

GERD & HAIR LOSS / SCALP BURNING
I'm still waiting for more focused test results in the autoimmune disease (AD) area from a rheumatologist. I guess ADs can cause GERD. But you don't need an AD to have GERD. I took it lightly when diagnosed with GERD because I couldn't feel it, but recently found out the acid reflux is going into the sinus cavity from a periodontal dentist. And from there ... who knows. I've had the burning hot patches and oily spots with the hairloss (telogen effluvium), orange palms and a light orange tint to my face and a light yellow tone to my skin.

My ENT put me on 2Prilosec b4 brkfst(30min), 2Prilosec b4 dinner(30min) and one Zantac just b4 bed. (max over the counter dose) It takes 1 mo for them 2B effective. No chocolate, coffee, sugar, tomato, etc. I sleep sitting upright.

RESPONSE TO THE MEDS/ETC.
Starting the medication, my husband noticed my hair was growing in just one week. Two & a half weeks into this - I've grown some serious hair. The light orange tint on my hands and face has been reduced by 50%. The chemical smell (I'm the only one who can smell it) has been dissapated. Prior to this I was getting an anoxia-like effect during sleep laying down with a burning right arm. I just started using hair spray again, but by the end of the day I the scalp itches. I'm switching to Burts Bees Avacado gel. Two of the lunula (white moons on fingernails), while small, are returning.

THOUGHTS
I think a malabsorbtion was occuring in the stomach from GERD causing a lack of vit B to grow hair. I'm just starting to feel the reflux and symptoms. My tounge hurts/burns now with the scalp. I think the acid reflux in the sinus cavity had to exit the body somehow - probably skin. I sometimes notice a light orange tone on my washcloth (no soap or makeup). Perhaps it is brown hair color still exiting the body. I still have some light orange like spots on the scalp. When I cheat with coffee tea or chocolate, my scalp burns and my right arm burns like there is insulation under the skin.

I have intermittent daily muscle twitching still (entire body/face) and my legs and feet will lock-up stiff. I can't wash with hot water in the shower - my face breaks out in red rash for 4 hours. (But I can scrub it with warm water with a cloth at the sink.)

It is a possibility this is autoimmune, but arsenic in my water is a definite cause and the hair color accident I had (too much chems).
For now I'm now learning about indoor air quality (benzene from garage, etc).

I have steered clear of chemical cleaners, laundry det., etc. But I do use X-14 1x mo. to make sure no mold is growing in the bath area. 'Is Your House Killing You' tv show lists vinegar will kill it. Mold eats vinegar then they literally break.

ONLINE - Wellsphere lists GERD as one of the most common causes of scalp burning. Dermatological-treatments.suite101 lists seven others.

Wrong Diagnosis lists SOME scalp burning causes:
Sunburn
Allergy to soap/shampoo
Reaction to hair coloring product
Hair Products
Stress
Anxiety (type of Neurosis)
Migraine
Side effect of medication
Occipital neralgia
Sinus
Whiplash injury
Vitamin B 12 deficiency
Spinal nerve compression
Diabetes
Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
Peripheral Neuropathy
Sun burn
Chemical burn
Heat burn
Peripheral nerve trauma / compression
Cold
Cerebrovascular accident

Sounds to me like what you are happening is a multiple chemical sensitivity. You might want to nix the hair spray and go with some all natural products. I would suggest a naturopath because while the meds worked this time they are not treating the cause which soulds like an allergic type reaction to chemicals.

Happy to hear that the hair is growing back. For the inflammation you can take tumeric twice a day, one teaspoon each time. It's great for ANY inflammation. Then you need to add good bacteria to your gut in the form of organic kefir and unprocessed fermented foods, otherwise, your immune system will be shot after the meds!

Hey Ben,

I did the doctor circuit with no results too! My daughter is healing with the protocol that I included, in addition to oregano oil. I put the oregano oil in her shampoo and she takes it orally one drop per day.

If it is a fungus, yes, your wife can get it. It's very contageous. We are changing my daughter's linens more frequently and washing her hair more often. Both you and your wife should take natural antifungals and avoid antibiotics, as well as the 'good bacteria.' It's my understanding that it can take months for the hair to begin growing once you get the infection under control. A good multivitamin supplement should help with that.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I am at lost here with how i should approach my situation. BTW thank you for confirming my doubts regarding my wife sleeping on my pillow. I would hate myself if she would have this too. Do you mind if I bother you on more personal level, it looks like you know what you are doing with your situation. Do you have yahoo, msn live messenger or skype where i can get in touch with you? Please i will contribute to you for your time what little i have. Its funny how insurance company that i pay my premium thinks my issues is not health related but more a cosmetic issues. What bunch of low lives..thank you again

This post is in response to Edenmarya. I'm not even sure she will see this or if this is still that active because it's now 2010. I just found it through a google search.
I wanted to say that after a spring and summer of losing my hair with all the redness, burning, itching, stinging, pain on my scalp I had a biopsy done mid August 2009. By the beginning of Sept. I found out the cause of my hair loss was from subacute cutaneous lupus. I also did not have a rash or any other major signs of lupus. I didn't even test positive in blood tests. But the doctors say that the biopsy isn't wrong because of the type of inflammation and how deep it is.
I also was using topical steroids like fluocinonide. They said the lupus was too deep, that the topical treatment wasn't reaching it. I've been on plaquenil for almost six months now. I have seen a big improvement in the loss of my hair. However, I'm still not where I was before this all started and I still have some weird symptoms.
I'm doing everything I can with diet and nutrition in hopes of weaning off the plaquenil one day. I have been told to not let my head get in the sun at all, not even walking to my car or the mailbox. It is affected by sun exposure. I think staying out of the sun has helped a lot with the redness and burning.
