Potential Dangers

People should avoid arnica if they have a known allergy to arnica or any member of the Asteraceae or Compositae plant families. Individuals who are allergic to sunflowers or marigolds may also be allergic to arnica. Signs of allergy may include rash, itching or shortness of breath.

Side Effects

Arnica has been well tolerated in studies when used in very diluted (homeopathic) doses for up to two weeks under the supervision of a qualified health care professional. However, at high doses, arnica may lead to serious side effects and death. Some people may experience stomach discomfort, including nausea and vomiting. Liver and kidney damage has also been reported. Organ failure may occur from high doses. Skin rashes, eczema or lesions in the mouth may occur. These side effects may be the result of arnica allergies. It is best to avoid using topical arnica on open wounds or near the eyes and mouth. There is a report of mouth ulcers caused by a mouthwash containing arnica and other ingredients.

Other side effects may include muscle weakness, organ damage, coma and death. Irregular heart rhythms, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure or failure of the heart to beat may occur when arnica is taken by mouth, especially in large doses. Arnica may increase the risk of bleeding. If you have diabetes or use anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs and are considering using arnica, discuss this with a health care professional. It may be necessary to stop taking arnica before some surgeries.

Pregnancy And Breast-Feeding

Arnica cannot be recommended during pregnancy and breast-feeding because of the risk of birth defects or spontaneous abortion.

Interactions with drugs, supplements and other herbs have not been thoroughly studied. The interactions listed below have been reported in scientific publications. If you are taking prescription drugs, speak with a health care professional or pharmacist before using herbs or dietary supplements.

Interactions With Drugs

In theory, arnica may increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs. Examples include warfarin (Coumadin), heparin and clopidogrel (Plavix). Some pain relievers may also increase the risk of bleeding if used with arnica. Examples include aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve, Anaprox). Use of arnica with other pain-relieving medications may increase the analgesic effects. It is possible that arnica may decrease the effectiveness of drugs used to lower blood pressure. Theoretically, arnica may cause a decrease in the protein binding of drugs that are highly protein bound.

Interactions With Herbs And Dietary Supplements

In theory, arnica may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with products such as Ginkgo biloba and garlic (Allium sativum). Use of arnica with other pain-relieving agents may increase the analgesic effects.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I believe that Murthy's aim in starting this thread is to prove to members that Arnica that I use frequently for various ailments that are not listed in the standard homeopathic texts that are in use today, therefore rendering its use dangerous.

I shall copy below my post on 'Arnica the Miracle Remedy - Brief Case Histories' on:

I shall be interested to have the response of members to my findings which I have recorded a year ago after which time I have a few more case histories in the use of this remedy that I shall record later.

Arnica the Miracle Remedy - Brief case histories

From Joe De Livera on 2005-11-08

I would like to note below brief case histories which I have recorded in the use of Arnica for various ailments.

It will be noted that some of the ailments that were successfully cured are not listed in the Repertories and the Materia Medicas now in use, and it is hoped that they are considered for listing in future editions, after more tests are carried out by those who can count on the facilities to carry out these tests.

Arnica 30c is the classical remedy to help cure wounds.

I have used Arnica 30c which I discovered was better than the 6c for the last 10 years every night or more often in the case of need like after surgery. I believe that I owe to it my sense of wellness. I do not have any ache or pain in my body and I have proved that it is to Arnica that I owe my BP 120/80 with pulse 65 at age 76. I invite others to use it and to record their response to this remedy.

I have used this myself after my Retropubic Prostatectomy and can confidently recommend it for use after any major surgery. When I regained consciousness I noticed the Morphine syringe attached to the IV line and promptly ordered it removed to the consternation of the nursing staff and the surgeon, who warned me that I could even suffer from a major shock due to the pain without the morphine. I stated that I will use my Arnica alone to control the pain and they were very surprised to note that I was relatively free of pain after a few hours. I was able to leave my bed on the third day without any pain medication except for the Arnica I used every 2 hours at first and every 3 hours later. I was discharged on the 5th day and walked to my car. They were all amazed at my extremely quick recovery at 73 years.

I used Sabal S 6c and Conium 30c when I discovered that I was allergic to Hytrin that was prescribed for my BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). I had a slight wound for which I used Arnica 30c and discovered that it was far superior to the other remedies I used for BPH and I stayed with it from 1996 up to my surgery in 2003 and used it after on a regular nightly basis.

It amazes me how this remedy that I have given over 20 patients who were suffering from the after effects of the TURP (trans urethral resection of the prostate) surgery who were incontinent due to some misadventure on the part of the Uro who had obviously damaged the sphincter muscle in the neck of the bladder. Arnica gave more time between visits to the toilet and in many cases it stabilized the incontinence in a few months. Others use it on a twice daily basis. Always in the water dose.

I have used it for many years on every overseas trip. Dosage is 1 teaspoonful taken 3 times on the day before departure. Dry doses to be taken every 3 hours on board and 3 times on the day after arrival.

The patient gradually lost motor control of his hands and feet for about a year and was confined to either his bed or a chair where he was placed by his children. Drugs that were prescribed were not effective. This case was referred to me and my response was an act of faith on my part in giving him Arnica 1M which I gave him in the water dose. He was completely cured in 2 months. The dosage used was 1 teaspoonful (capful) twice daily. He is now quite mobile and does not use the remedy any more.

I used Arnica 1M dose 1 tsp daily in the case of a 75 year old who was showing signs of Alzheimer's and he showed perceptible improvement in 2 weeks which was continued thereafter. He is now permanently on the Arnica. Dose 1 tsp daily.

I have used it very often when the patient complains of general body pain (not arthritic). It is also useful for chronic back pain due to previous injuries. Sciatica is also helped by a twice daily dose.

Almost everyone who has taken 1 teaspoonful of this remedy in the water dose prior to sleep has noticed the deep unbroken sleep that they experienced during the night. They wake up quite refreshed with a zing in their steps.

I have used it in over 30 cases some of which were chronic for over 10 years and within a week, the patient is usually cured. The success rate is better that 80%. I recommend that the remedy is continued but those who did not do so after about 3 months do not use it anymore and can be considered permanently cured. The skin condition after this time resembles Vitiligo especially in the chronic cases which had eroded the melanin in the skin which does not regenerate but there is no discomfort or itchiness.

I first used this remedy for a 78 year old lady who was suffering from recurrent reinfection of her legs. She had been to hospital every 6 months on 3 occasions for about a week each time where she was treated with the most powerful antibiotics which left her drained out like a rag. When she came out on the last occasion I gave her Arnica 30c in the water dose and she takes 1 teaspoonful before sleep. She was also an insomniac and now enjoys deep sleep and for the last 2 years she has not suffered from any reinfection from her Cellulitis. I have also used it for 3 other patients also in the same age group who had been hospitalized at least twice before in each case and they do not have any reinfection after many months or years. The Arnica seems to help by increasing the blood flow in the capillaries under the skin which in turn prevents reinfection. They have however to be on one dose of Arnica permanently.

I would refer to the many posts on the ABC forum where I have been advocating the use of Arnica 6c for hair growth. The success rate has been better than 80%. I use Weisbaden 200c for the stubborn cases which is taken every other day.

Many who were using Nitroglycerine on a SOS basis have been helped by the Arnica 200c which was used also on a SOS basis. For daily use as a prophylactic the patient uses Arnica 30c twice daily and is not affected by the angina any more. It is however important that the patient has his condition checked regularly.

I used Arnica in many cases that were not reacting to Bryonia 30 which is my default remedy for headaches and it worked well.

I am treating a boy who is now 6 years for the last 3 years who is a Haemophiliac with Arnica 30c for internal bleeding when he suffers from any fall or bump which causes a swelling and pain usually on his joints. The Arnica helps to dissipate the blood and reduces the swelling. I use Lachesis 200c for open cuts which bleed profusely and this arrests the bleeding in about 15 minutes. Prior to this therapy the boy had to be rushed to hospital for a drip with every fall or cut.

Hundreds of teenagers have benefited by the use of Arnica 30c. I can vouch personally for its efficacy to control styes which I used to get weekly with painful results.

Prevents their formation.

The ultimate remedy.

I believe that it helps to dissipate the swelling of the synovial fluid which causes pain. I treat the Arthritis with Rhus Tox 1M and Hypericum 200c to alleviate the pain both taken in the water dose.

I have many patients who have certified that it works like a charm !

Helps to alleviate the swelling and pain. This remedy is only effective as soon as the tonsils show signs of discomfort. Chronic cases have to be treated with an antibiotic. This remedy controls the formation of Tonsiloliths but it has to be taken on a daily basis to be effective in this control.

I consider that this is easily my most important discovery which I made quite accidentally a year ago when I gave Arnica 30c to a MD who was a Type I Diabetic to help cure a chronic non healing wound. He informed me on the day after he took 2 doses that his Blood Sugar had dropped drastically and refused to use it anymore as he felt that it was some mysterious medicine which he did not wish to experiment with as he was already on Insulin which he injected himself 4 times daily. I then gave this remedy to two Type II Diabetics and discovered that they had the same reaction when their BS dropped considerably similar to the drop caused by Metformin. I then prescribed 1/4 teaspoonful Cinnamon powder to be used twice daily and have 2 patients who are able to control their ailment without recourse to the standard drugs used for the control of Diabetes.

I shall be glad to reply any questions that those who read this article may like to pose if any clarification is required on any matter pertaining to my use of Arnica listed above.

Arnica is indeed a good remedy, and can be used for many of the conditions given above.

However, don't take for more than 2 weeks.Give a gap of atleast one week, and restart only when symptoms return unchanged.

If symptoms go away after two weeks, never to return, what is the point in repeating it?

The aim of any homeopathic medicine is cure. It means ,even after you stop the medicine, the problem should not recur.

If your high BP is controlled by Arnica, but returns the moment you stop it,that either means it is not the correct medicine or that the potency has to be increased.

Taking a medicine continuously, to keep a problem under check is not advised in homeopathy, and that may lead to complications ,later.

You may not be able to attribute the arteosclerosis, which you may get after 2 years of use of Arnica, to its usage.

Not all people will get adversly affected by Arnica even if they take it continuously. If you are not susceptible to the medicine, you may take it for years together continuously, and it does nothing.

However, if you are susceptible to it, prolonged usage may bring you harm.

If Murthy is repeating / voice'ing his concerns/thoughts repeatedly, then it is his discretion. He has very good reasons for doing it, looking at the nuisance prescriptions and medicine preparation methods being propogated here. Why should anybody dictate terms to another forum member.

- Homeopathy is not make-believe Forestry medicine, which can be un-authentically prescribed left and right. Homeopathy is a specific and precise razor-sharp science in medicine. Homeopathy requires very specific professional medical knowledge.

The Internet patients are going to be highly confused and misguided and even harm themselves or unknowingly make their case further more complicated. The prescriber cannot be held responsible for left & right prescriptions via Internet since nobody will actually know whether the prescriber is a qualified doctor or a dummy joker. Even if the medicine is not indicated the gullible patient will attempt to try it and may also fail.

The Homeopathic CAUSATIVE factor should be found out before recklessly prescribing a medicine (like Arnica) for ANY & ALL diseases. OTHERWISE, it is just placiebo'cally only a palliative (only temporary relief leading & cumulating to more powerful & dangerous symptoms later on, in the long term).

Dear Nesha, more about Gavini's statement to other people:

Re: breast cyst From gavinimurthy on 2006-11-03
Don't depend on this Pradipde's prescriptions.
Most of the time he copies from the posts of other's by reading the archives.

He himself used medicines recklessly, and has become impotent on his own admission.

See his profile, by clicking his name on the green bar.

he also prescribes multiple medicines, and doesn't know a thing about 'proper' homeopathy.

Re: be cautious with Pradipde's prescriptions. From gavinimurthy on 2006-11-04

I understand your point.

I will take your advice and caution the prescriber first,if he has a valid email address in his profile.

Hi Kuldeep

Had it been so, how the spat between you and Nesha is allowed to continue?

There can't be one yardstick for you, and another for me.

Any way, your advice is good, and I will follow it.

Re: argument vs discussion From gavinimurthy on 2006-11-12
I was argumentative. I agree.

There was a need then.

No longer required.

Re: argument vs discussion From Joe De Livera on 2006-11-12
To Kuldeep

I happy to observe that you have forced Murthy to open his eyes and accept the obvious.

I have been replying some of his posts on the ABC addressed to me and have been reading some others in recent weeks and noticed that those he makes in the evening are boiling over with anger which he builds up till he virtually bursts open when he considers himself the homeopathic god whose pronouncements do not bear questioning. At that time he is very patronizing and even goes to the extent of 'commending' me for my posts. This occurred just last night when I felt that I had to reply a post where a patient had asked me a number of questions last morning which I passed over to Murthy as he seemed to have a lot of time hanging on his hands. He misinterpreted my request as an indication that I was unable to answer the post which I did when I had the time and he then 'commended' me in a very patronizing way.

What does one do with a person who is only rational at certain times of the day and heaps invective on the resident prescribers on the ABC who have tried to help patients in the evening hours ? There is obviously some very deep seated reason for his 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality and I suspected Schizophrenia which is an ailment that can be treated successfully by Homeopathy. All Murthy seems to be able to adept at fanning tension and arousing hatred on the ABC which was once a place where, except for just one female self confessed witch who pretends to be a homeopath and lacks any hands on experience by her own admission, all were able to exist in an atmosphere of love and sharing.

I would like to have your thoughts on how we can deal with this monster whose philosophy of life which was epitomized by his quotation of the Mahabaratha after every post on the Hpathy forum in the recent past, has changed so very dramatically. It was only a few months ago that he subscribed to the philosophy of love as per his quotation of the Mahabarat which I shall copy below, and freely admits in a post on this forum yeaterday that he is not ashamed of his present attitude of promoting hatred which he continues to propagate in the name of classical homeopathy. He is himself aware that this classical stream is being abandoned by the majority of qualified practicing homeopaths who have in emails to me have admitted freely that they prefer to use the same approach in diagnosis and cure as I do in the direct 'this for that'manner also known today as 'Joepathy'.

It is remarkable that Murthy hardly ever tries to help any patient who posts seeking a cure. His main function today on the ABC is to act as you describe it succinctly as the 'homeopathic constable who is married to the ABC'. I presume that he is compelled to infest the ABC as it is possible that he has been kicked out of his Hpathy, where he may have tried the same tactics that he uses on the ABC and run afoul of its owners.

It would be interesting to observe how long he will last on the ABC, as I am not alone in exposing him and protesting against his double standards and his lack of rational thought, as evidenced in his many posts on this forum.

For the purpose of record I shall copy below his own signature that he used on the Hpathy forum which he now confirms he has abandoned without any shame.

I decided to ignore posts of this type. It doesn't mean I accept the allegations.

it only means,I don't want to start an argument.

Whatever, I have to say, if need be, I will say, in a seperate post.

Re: argument vs discussion From PANKAJ VARMA on 2006-11-12
A discussion takes place between two persons...who are 'playing on the same side of the tennis court' , while an argument takes place between two persons on the 'opposite sides of the tennis court'.

A discussion is to improve the performance of your 'partner'.....an argument is to kill the performance of your 'opponent'.

The objective makes all the difference !! The objective also decides the tone !!

Re: argument vs discussion From Joe De Livera on 2006-11-12
Thank you Pankaj for your words of wisdom.

It is good to know that I am not alone in my quest to understand this enigma who has constantly berated us under the guise of 'protecting' his own version of hyper classical homeopathy which his former colleagues on the Hpathy forum have gotten sick and tired of and which lead to his being booted out.

This unfortunately was the beginning of our misfortune as Murthy descended upon our forum and from that very date he has constantly been the source of much hot wind which unfortunately wastes our collective time which we could use to help patients who post here looking for help.

It is unfortunate however that your statement may be far beyond the ken of Murthy who seems to have cocooned himself in his own mirage as witnessed especially in his evening posts for which there must surely be a reason.
