skin problems - 2 yr. old son

I have a little boy who is two years old. He was totally breastfed for the first year of his life. He did have some type of allery problems through my milk I eliminated dairy products and switched to soy milk and soy products for my self. This seem to help. He did have a lot of strange sicknesses develop from the time he was born of and on. We have a high amount of sulfur in our drinking water and I wonder if this could be a culprit. He develped rough dry skin in the creases of his elbows and behind knees. When at the medical dr. the dr. said he had eczemia and said use lots of lotions and limit baths.
He had a severe rash now on inside bend of elbows. After taking a bath last week, he develped small rough red patches of dry skin on stomach, back, legs, arms and one cheek. These do not appear to itch as intensly as the other main areas. He scratches quite a bit and his arms have broke open and bled. It appears to me like the sulfur water is causing the problems. He did not use soap in the bath. He is still nursing. I still use soy products for myself and him, but since he began eating table food he occassionally eats dairy products (wanting to eat like his siblings.) He had never had any immunizations. I have tried olive oil on his skin and some natural baby eczema cream. Doesn't really help. The itching it really bad during the night. I have not tried any homeopathic remedies for this yet. Confunsed what to try. I am allergic to sulfur drugs Does anyone have any suggestions. does anyone know anything about possible allergy to sulfur water to skin?

What is the sleeping pattern of the child?

Medical history of parents (both) ?

My son does ususally take an afternoon nap. We practice the family bed and he sleeps very well. Sometimes he doesn't go to sleep until 10:30 pm or after but when we lay down and nurse he usually goes right to sleep. He still nurses some during the night but he only wakes to nurse and goes right back to sleep. Since he started the itching of his arms and legs during the night he is a little more restless, tossing and turning some, but not really waking up. He does still breastfeed in the day time as well and he does eat table food.

I, his mother am 48 and in very good health. No medical problems..... I am not on any medication for anything except for taking vitamins and using homeopathic medicine if necessary. This child is my 13th living child. I have totally breastfed all of my children. all of my children except for 2 have been born at home, including this child. My husband the child's father is also 48, and has no medical problems to speak of. Occassional high blood pressure and cholestrol, but on no medication for either. He is the father of all of our children.
Hope this helps.

Any suggestions for homeopathic remedy?? The past several days he is getting worse. Lots of scratching at night. He is scratching mostly on the inside of his elbows and a litttle behind his knees. The rest of the rash on his stomach, back, and legs is much fainter, rough feeling and he doesn't seem to scratch at it, or not like his arms and knees. His arms are starting to get pretty raw, and red. I read about using sulfur?? Anyone have any suggestions or helpful info?

Before using Sulphur please remember the following!

Sulphur is indicated when skin is dry,
scaly, and unhealthy; every little injury suppurates. Skin ailments
are associated with lot of itching and burning that becomes worse on
scratching and washing. Itching more in the evening. Skin
excoriations especially in folds. Skin becomes dry and hard. Feeling
of a band around bones. Skin affections that develop after local
medication. This remedy is more suited to thin and weak individuals
who are very sensitive to heat. Mentally suited to people who are
nearly always irritated and depressed. They are very forgetful. They are either too busy or they dare lazy and do not feel like doing work. Some of them may have a feeling that they are immensely.

Take care,

2 or 3 things here. Sulphur is bad tempered and irritable with hot feet in bed & early morning stool, not want much to eat until noon.
Pulsatilla is easy going up to a point and then stubborn , cant take rich foods. [ the plant has a high sulphur content]
Lycopodium feeds little and often - happy to be in room on own as long as someone is nearby. has a lazy, down ,period about 4-6 o/c in afternoon.
But it could be psorinum.

my son is very outgoing, happy, has great verbal skills. Very energetic, cheerful disposition, fun loving and playful. Very attached and close to mom. He is showing normal 2 yr. old signs, such as getting angry when doesn't get his own way. He does not really care for sweets. Has an allergy toward dairy products. He Really likes meat. He still breastfeeds quite a bit but he does eat table food. He likes fruit. He drinks water really well...What other things can I share that would help ????

I suggest that mothers pay attention to their intuition about their children. Yes, the water is not good for son. (anyone) The only way you will know for sure is to drink and cook with only bottled water that you are ASSURED does not contain sulpur and or high levels of arsnic. Don't just order delivered, inquire, and tell the problems of the child. RO water is best. Reverse osmosis.

The child will have to bathe with it also. He is sensitive to something and this is the first place to begin. If you ever move to another city, check the water first. He will have to bathe with UNsented soaps. Do not allow perfume in the house. Vacume daily. Get rid of old pillows and kitchen sponges. Keep all things for him fresh and new.

Keep his intake on a calendar so you can go back and see any pattern that shows up that you are not aware of at this time.

After restricting things and at least one month has passed...add back one thing and wait and see if he reacts.

Begin teaching your boy that some things will have to be considered until he is better. My son had infant asthma and was nearly dead by age one. (I did nurse) He had to learn his limits and he also had to learn not to trust adults outside of his own family. No one.

There is the story of the child allergic to peanuts. A smiling lady at a party informed him that "one" couldn't hurt...and he died. Wonder how that woman feels.

Check all he eats. Watch hours of breakout and go back and see what he ate that may have caused it. Many are becoming sensitive to wheat. It is in everything! It is called maltodextrin. The new Splenda is cut with maltodextrin...wheat. I guess it was too sweet. Many times what a child or adult loves best is the culprit.

Buy meats for him at health store. Contains no hormones or antibiotics.

Read ingredients of all things you buy for him to eat. Teach your other children to respect him.

Thank goodness no vacinations!! I am proud of you. At least you do not have to contend with heavy metals. Every vacination has a Homeopathy counterpart available for your use.

Please keep in touch, this will not be an overnight thing to solve. Sabra

Tues.11/16 I took my son to a Homeopathic consultant at a local health food store. She did not have an opening but saw up between appointments. She muscle tested him for sulfur because of the sulfur in our drinking water. He tested postive to sulfur. She gave me Sulfur Forte and told me to give him two pills that afternoon. And then wait and see what happened. She also said to put zinc oxide on his rash and to give him 1 teasp. of cod liver oil a couple times a day. That day after taking the remedy he got much redder and itched a lot. The next day he was some better calming down some. Two days later he started itching during the night again. I called her on the phone and she said if he started itching again to give him another dose and wait. We went out of town for 4 days and we also began to use bottled water. The next Tues. we had an appointment with the consultant again. He is not any better. She muscle tested him again for sufur and got the same results. She said we need to elimnate the sulfur water as this is causing a problem . The fumes from the water may even pose a risk in the house from others using the water. I had been running a cool mist humidifier on my son with sulfur water in it - not a good thing. I stopped this. She said we need to get a filter system for the whole house. This may take some time as we do not own our home. My husband is a pastor and we live in a parsonage. His rash some days seems a little better but each night around 3 or 4 am he starts in itching really badly again. The consultant gave me more sulf.ur forte and said give it to him only when he is itchy. Continue the zinc oxide oint. and the cod liver oil. She also gave us Sniffles (Newton 4 kids) (contains Sticta, kali bi 15x, Echinacea, verbascum, ginseng, salvia, gaultheria 3x) for him to take as she was concerned because he was really congested in his nose/ some nights he has had a little croupy cough. She also told me once the congestion is better to give him a dose of
tuberculinum. She thought probably only one dose of 4 pills should help. He is showing a lot of the symptoms which she read from her book for this rememdy. I read about this remedy in myBoericke, Materia Medica and Repertory and I do not know what I think about using this??? I do feel the symptom matches are very close for a small child which she read to me. Some of the matches were eczema, grinding teeth, itching worse at night, banging head sometimes, (lately in frustration) allergy to milk products, unxplained fevers, angry outbursts ( he has been having these too which is completely out of character for him). I also do not know what I think of her way of taking the homeopathic doses - only when worse and this one time dose of tuberculinum. I have studied a little and this is a little different than how I have learned to use the remedies. What does anyone think about this?? My book says tuberculinum needs more frequent repetition in children. and should not be given without a most careful cardiac examinatin. especially in children. Any thoughts or suggestions? I feel we are only getting worse. I need to do someting to help this little one. I think I may look for someone to give us a second opinon for the homeopathic doses and muscle testing if I can find someone. She also muscle tested for allergy to soy and goat milk - but these both seemed okay. Goat perhaps a better choice than soy. I will continue to work on the water problem.

Never use "ointment" on skin problems. It is like a mask that is a barrier to oxygen.
Only creams or liquids are tolerated on skin.

I do not feel much confidence with this homeopathic dr.

Have you tried MEZEREUM? (200X) I do not agree with Tuberculinum. It is a difficult remedy to decide to use. Not used lightly. There are MANY to choose from before resorting to T.

Read on M. and see what you think. Sabra

Hello! Well, from my personal experience with skin problems this is what I know:
1. Treating from inside out.
- 1 tsp of Barleans high lignan flaxseed oil daily(shake very well to mix the clumped lignans) mixed with some "organic" cottage cheese or plain yogurt (tastes like nut milk with the yogurt). Let stand for 5 minutes before eating to allow for the 2 "sulfur" proteins (amino acids) methionine and cysteine to break through the fatty acid chain in the flax oil. You must mix these two together so the essential fatty acids in the flax oil can be absorbed by the body's cells; otherwise this "good" fat will not be absorbed and become toxic "bad" fat. (Research done by 7 time nobel prize nominee, German scientist Johanna Budwig).
- "friendly" bacteria is useful for any health problem
-soy milk is not necessarily good for growing children (source: annual symposium on Soy - growth hormone problems detected?!) I would suggest you stop breast feeding him for now; at least until his symptoms or illness subsides..you never know!
- Instead of giving him sulfur "products", try feeding him organic sulfur foods like raw cabbage, onions, etc.
2. Treating skin surface...
- Use NutriBiotic "non-soap" Skin cleanser for bathing. It is pH balanced and contains Citricidal from extract of grapefruit seed and also contains some soothing/skin-friendly herbs.
- Buy a shower filter to eliminate chemicals, unwanted minerals and other "stuff" in our water today. Sprite Industries sells filters at a reasonable cost but not thorough filtering; chlorine mainly. However, you can contact a health product provider for a variety of selections but don't complicate your search to frustration. Either get Sprite or Shower Cleen through N.E.E.D.S. (1-800-634-1380, Customer Service)
- Drinking water should also be purified; just get a Brita faucet mount purifier. Cheaper than Reverse Osmosis and healthier than bottled and does an adequate job of filtration.
- Topically, try Thursday Plantation "The Original" Tea Tree Antiseptic Cream. It works on many skin irritations and itchings and bites, etc, that I have had, even not knowing what it was!
Suggestion: Try cessation of breast feeding first and see if this helps. Then try the flax seed oil. All other external suggestions can be administered at the same time. All the above would be good for the entire family.
Note: I thought I was healthy too before I became chronically ill. After having 13 kids and at your age I wouldn't be surprise if your immune system is wavering?
Just a few ideas that I believe would be harmless but hopefully helpful.
Good luck!

We have experienced very similar problems. Eczema and asthma have plagued my two sons and myself for years. Through lots of research, we've found the following to be true.

1. Sulfur drug allergy signals allergy other sulfurs as well. We have to avoid all sulfates and sulfites in foods and bottled water. Bottled water from springs with a high sulfur content also cause problems.

2. Sulfates in shampoos and soaps are bad not only on the skin, but to the lungs as well.

3. Garlic, greens, mushrooms and onions are "natural sulfurs" which can cause the same allergic reations.

4. There is some connection between sulfur allergy and latex. My dentist told me this, and it has proven true. We avoid all latex gloves (at the doctor, in restaraunts and at the butcher), latex balloons, bandaids, and pencil erasers. Thankfully we homeschool, because my 2nd son goes into anaphylactic shock if anyone erases with a latex eraser in the same room as he is in. We buy ALL the pencils for youth group at our Church. LOL

5. Sodium Benzoate, a chemical in some foods, soft drinks, skin care and kool aids, is a companion allergy.

6. A daily supplement of MSM is about all the sulfur we can tolerate, except for the tiny amounts in some our homeopathic remedies. We take the supplement to keep our joints healthy since we would otherwise be sulfur depleted. Avoid supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin, however, as some of these are sulfated.

7. These allergies run in families, and get worse with repeated exposure. I have them, 2 of my 5 (so far) children have them, all 3 of my sisters have them, and several of my nieces and nephews.

As a PK (Preacher's Kid) I understand Parsonage Living. I pray you can convince your congregation to help you with the health of your son. However, we have found no water treatment for well water that stops our allergies. My parents have spent thousands on their well, and we still cannot bathe there, or be in their home when the dishwasher is running. We are currently looking into a well aeration system as our last hope for their home, as I fear my mother is developing similar allergies. The science is good, but I don't know anyone who has tried it.

We were blessed to be able to get our home on city water a year ago, and life has been much easier ever since.

Post back if you have any questions. I hope this helps!

bjmj1 THaNk YOU Thank you for sharing!!!! It is so nice to finally have someone who understands and relates to what we are going through.
Thank you for sharing your information. I am wondering if you have sought any traditional medical help for any of these sulfur related problems? Did you go to an allergists to have the sulfur allergy diagnosed or was this figured out by trial and error? I believe that my son's is caused from sulfur allergy ..... but our congregation wants a more medical determination that it is sulfur related before they will help us. Our family dr. said he doesn't know how to see if water/sulfur related. HE also did not know if an allergists could determine that? The congregation won't just take my word on it. Can you share with me where you have researched info. on sufur allergies especially in water? Also do you notice if your child's or your lymph nodes are swollen alot when you have t this problem? I would really like to research more on this but don't know where to turn. Did you find any homeopathic remedies that helped any? I don't think much will help until the sufulr is eliminated. We are bring in all the drinking and cooking water for my son and I. But clothes are still washed and the fumes are still in the house, ..... Any more that you can share I will really appreicate. How much exposure did it take for you sons before they developed asthma? Please answer back soon! bjmj1 I will look forward to getting more info from you. PS I also home school : )

Yes, we have sought traditional medical help. Unfortunately, none of the doctors we visited could help. I personally have severe breathing problems with my sulfur allergy, and my heart rate goes nuts. I used an inhaler for years for asthma. Though my skin was extremely dry and would crack and bleed, it was never diagnosed as eczema. My joints swell, and I become almost unable to move. Because of these “symptoms”, my family doctor sent me to a rheumatologist, I have ended up at a very well known hospital’s ER with “heart attack” symptoms, and I have ended up at another ER where they dismissed the reaction as a “panic attack”. All of this was before I started research myself in about 2001, and discovered the real problem. Thankfully, after reading my research, my family doctor has been thoroughly convinced that I did make the right diagnosis, has added all my allergies to my charts, and has taken every precaution possible to assure I am not exposed to anything dangerous. She also prescribed an epi-pen for emergency use, but I have never had to use it. She sent me to a local allergist, but he was of no help, and even refused to test me for a reaction to my well water. I never went back to him. I recently had an emergency gall bladder removal, and my family doctor terrified all my nurses and the anesthesiologist. She told them all of my allergies and notified them that they could be responsible for killing me if they didn’t follow her orders exactly. Every pill, every shot, EVERYTHING was double checked, and then shown to my husband or myself for approval before use. I was thankful for that last checkpoint, because they tried to give me a benedryl in capsule form before surgery. Some capsules contain latex, so that could have caused serious complications.

My poor boys started having asthma problems at 4 months, and 2 months. They had eczema patches almost from birth. The oldest was sent for testing at a well-known children’s hospital, and we were sent home with a nebulizer and told to use Cetaphil soap. My younger son was admitted to a local hospital for breathing abnormalities and then sent home a day later with a nebulizer, an apnea monitor, and Cetaphil. For about two years with our oldest and a year with our younger we gave each boy 4 breathing treatments a day + emergency treatments and were only able to bathe them once a week.
At this time, we were on city water, but my children and myself have such severe sulfur allergies, that they were still miserable. Any time we ate garlic or onions, anytime they were in the same room with balloons, every bath time (shampoo with sulfates) would set them off. I had no clue what any of the connections were, and the doctor didn’t either.

About 1999, my sister suggested we try Hepar Sulf. Calc. 30 X for their asthma attacks. We did, and were able to discontinue the nebulizer completely, and the eczema cleared up.

Then my parents moved into a house with well water. We all got worse. Every time we would visit, we would have breathing problems and my oldest son’s skin would erupt. I wondered if it was some pesticide (they live in the country with farmland all around). I never thought, however, that their stinky water could be the culprit. Then we moved into a new house with well water, and life got miserable. I couldn’t stand to shower or bathe the kids; we would all end up wheezing. Washing dishes caused such eruptions on my hands I couldn’t move them without bleeding. The kids were once again back to their weekly bath and their skin was a mess. I started researching all of our symptoms, and came to the conclusion that we had mercury poisoning from my cracking amalgam fillings. They had been especially troublesome during my second pregnancy, and my second son was my worse with the allergy. I then found out that mercury poisoning can throw your body into sulfur allergy, and the pieces started falling in place (especially since I knew I had a sulfa drug allergy). At my dentist, when having my fillings replaced, he informed me that latex allergy is related to sulfa drug allergy, and the balloon problems all made sense. We have changed ISP’s since I researched all of this, and my links were in my favorites, so I’ll try to re-post with some links after I re-research.

Sorry this is so long, but the whole mess took about 6 years to clear up. The medical profession was of little or no help. If God hadn’t led me in the right direction, I don’t know if we would’ve survived. I just got tired of not having answers and set out to figure it out. The internet was of great help, but no one site had a complete story. I would find one part here, and one part there that would link to one part somewhere else. It seems this allergy is not very well researched, and the medical profession has few answers.

Our lymph nodes do swell with this allergy. You need to be careful, though, because if the throat is the place you notice swelling, it could be anaphylactic shock. That means his throat is trying to swell shut. My family is TERRIBLY worse with this allergy than most people seem to be, so don’t “worry” about that. Just be aware that it can happen. A sure sign that we’re having a reaction also seems to be that our cheeks get red. I notice that in the boys before any other symptoms are complained about.

Depending on the specific symptoms surrounding each attack, we have used the following in 30 X Hylands:
Spongia Tosta
Bryonia Alba
Hepar Sulf. Calc.
Nux Vomica
I am by NO MEANS a homeopath, so research this yourself. In cases where anaphylactic shock is setting in, we take a benedryl. I know many on this board may disagree with that, and I’m not sure I blame them, but when your child’s throat is closing, you do what works FAST. Our best treatment has been to avoid the allergens completely. With no exposure we have no reaction. However, complete avoidance is nearly impossible.

We are now on city water, but we still buy bottled for all of our drinking and cooking. Be careful, however, as some bottled waters actually add sulfates, and some come from springs with high sulfur contents. We can use Aquafina, Ozarka, and Great Value Spring Water from Wal-Mart with no problems.

I agree that you will probably not see complete reconciliation of the problem until the sulfur water is out of the house. Unfortunately, I know of no filtration processes that actually work. We had a softener and a “sulfur removal tank” on our well, and even though the smell was better, the sulfur was still there. My parents have several different things through Culligan, and have practically no smell at all, but we still cannot bathe there or be in the house while the dishwasher is running. I actually ran across your post while desperately searching for someone with an answer to this problem. While we had well water, we bathed at a friend’s house and left the house for 2 hours to run the dishwasher. It was a pain, but that was all we could do. However, as I said, we’re worse than the norm. Also, be sure no clothes that have to hang dry are in areas he frequents, such as his room.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. The best advice I have is READ EVERY LABLE of every product either of you consume or ANY of you put on your body. No one in this house can use sulfated shampoos or deodorants without causing a problem. Jason has several shampoos without sulfates. Some of them, unfortunately, have Sodium Benzoate, but it’s WAY down the list, and we have been able to use them without consequence. Nature de France has several deodorant choices. Research foods that are natural sulfurs, and avoid them. If you have any more questions, just post. I pray you find the answers you need.

Hello! What a relief! My boyfriend and I have been having similiar problems. When our rashes break out the rash actually welts at the same time. He has so much sulfur in his water that you can SMELL it when you turn the water on. I have been telling him its the sulfur in the water as I was diagnosed as a child as allergic to sulfa.

Perhaps you can have an allergist inject you with sulfur to see if that is the culprut and to get a diagnosis that your church will acknowledge.

My boyfriend goes to an allergist this coming Thursdsay and he is bringing some of the water with him. I unfortantly do not at this time have health insurance.

His doctor put him on Zyrtec and that helped him for awhile but is no longer affective.

Good luck.

After more search I suggest using XEROPHYLLUM 12C for 3 doses. Each dose must be one week apart. Check with ABC and if you cannot find this, I will send.

Google for sites that sell remedies.

Hello Sabra,
Thank you for the reply! I printed out this entire page that I brought to my boyfriend... which by the way, my boss found for me! He does not want to believe it is the sulfur in the water since I am now cooking and drinking city water he brings home from work. He doesn't get that we still shower and do laundry in it. I am at a wits end. My boss suggested that I take a weeks vacation and to somewhere to see if a change in water helps. My boyfriend did agree to take the water with him to the allergist Thursday but after reading the treads I'm not secure that the doctor's will assoicate the sulfur with the problem. I will keep you updated...

p.s. Yes, I live with my boyfriend... And, I understand that replacing a well or putting a filtration system in a house is expensive but... so is one's health!

LindsayMac last decade
I am not sure I understand the last posting from LindsayMac.

I don't think I asked about boyfriend...I do not judge someone else's activities.

I would rather move than put in a filtration unit, but I like to move anyway.

Welbie should talk to the church about this. It is a health hazard like a contaminated water table. One should not be forced to live this way. Pray that the church sees it this way.

Blessings, Sabra

Hey Welbie, how are you doing?

There is some evidence that some non-asthmatics also can suffer adverse reactions to sulfites. Vitamin C may help alleviate some of the inflammation associated with chronic allergies.

"Sulfites" or "sulfating agents" are general terms used to describe sulfur based substances that have been in widespread use for many years by the food and drug industries. They include sulfur dioxide, sodium sulfite, sodium and potassium bisulfite, and sodium and potassium metabisulfite. Although they have various permitted uses, their primary function is as a preservative or antioxidant to prevent or reduce spoilage and discolouration during the preparation, storage and distribution of many foods.

Patients can obtain useful resource information by contacting the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (toll-free phone number is 800-929-4040) and the International Food Information Council (phone number is 202-296-6540).

Research suggests infants who are breast-fed during the first 4 months of life experience a decreased incidence of ear infections, gastroenteritis, and respiratory illnesses during the first year of life and a decreased risk of otitis media for the first 7 years of life. There is a decreased chance that a child will be allergic to cow’s milk after being breast-fed first.

For excellent patient education resources, visit eMedicine's Allergy Center and Allergic Reaction and Anaphylactic Shock Center. Also, see eMedicine's patient education articles Food Allergy and Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylactic Shock).

Best wishes,

Hi! Have you tried Beta Glucan? Or Moducare? I had lichen sclerosis and the beta glucan worked for me. Take it 2-3 times a day and you'll notice a difference in a week or two. It's said to cure even cancer, herpes, skin problems, wrinkles, arthiritis,HIV,and also helps with AIDS.It jumpstarts your immune system and kills bacterial, fungal and viral infections-it worked for me.But since I'm immune to anti-biotics-I still take it just to be on the safe side. I'm also starting to hear good things about Moducare. So go to your local vitamin store or if you can't find it there search the web. And the doctors said there was no cure for my Lichen sclerosis-HA!

Hi:

I believe that I know what is wrong with your son.

Have you been feeding him milk from a bottle with a RUBBER NIPPLE?

If so - sounds like your son has a RUBBER/LATEX ALERGY.

I am a designer and manufacturer of RUBBER/LATEX products. The problem lies not in the "proteins" of the natural rubber - as some believe - but in the process of VULCANIZATION of this material so that it will withstand hot and cold temperatures.

I got a similar alergic reaction while wearing one of my inventions. It itches terribly at night. It started in my elbows and knees and soon spread to my stomach and neck. It is terribly itchy at night.

Ma'am - your son has a RUBBER/LATEX alergy - probably from the nipple of the bottle that he has been sucking on. I suggest that you remove all rubber and latex products from his room.

IF ANYONE ELSE IS USING RUBBER/LATEX BOTTLE NIPPLES TO NURSE INFANTS - PLEASE STOP NOW. PLEASE USE SILICON INSTEAD.

Brown last decade
Just as a follow up comment to the last comment. The VULCANIZATION of rubber products mixes sulfates with the rubber to create a stonger material.

So everyone here is on the right track - I think. But where is he getting the sulphates from - not from the drinking water I bet.
