Awful taste in mouth. Page 5 of 6

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
I'd be interested to hear about this as well. Have had a bad day today. The tongue and saliva is now just plain sour. I can't exactly call it a burning sensation. It's more of a taste thing. However the hormones aspect seems to be cropping up all the time, so I have a feeling we are getting nearer to the solution.

Hi Johanna, it seems to me that you fit exactly the right age to have burning mouth syndrome. The bitter taste is apparently there in 11% of people with burning mouth. and I don't think you have to always have the burning.

What is noticeable is that just like our pain, it is not there first thing in the morning, then gets worse as the days goes on.

They have trouble prescribing for it, but do prescribe things like antibiotics (for teh nerve pain), and something called klonopine, but I don't know what that is.

but I would certainly want to revisit the doctor with this information.

If you ever want to email me directly, my email is on the home page.

Best wishes from the NE,
Sue

Hi all on the forum

My main problem is the bitter taste in my mouth, but I do have a bit of minor burning of the tongue and lips at time.

Have been looking into something called bms/bts (burning mouth syndrome/burning tongue syndrome) and have found 3 main connections between that and what I have.

1. Bitterness is not there first thing in the morning, it comes on after an hour or two.

2. Bitterness is not there when eating (or sucking on a mint) but there when drinking tea or juice.

3. Bitterness gets worse during day.

Am wondering if anyone else has these symptoms but not the burning mouth, or the burning mouth to a small degree only.

Has anyone found any reasons for this, and anything that works?

I have read about so many treatments from progesterone cream and a herb called vitex/chasteberry to clonozapine and other drugs.

Anybody's experience would be appreciated! Best wishes to you all, Sue

Thanks for the time and advice everyone! I have read all the replies hoping to solve my own problem.

My awful taste problem is similar to what this post started out with:

Milk/creamy taste in mouth, not the metallic taste which is mentioned later on.

It developed a year ago when I was going through immense stress.

I noticed a yeasty fermented smell almost like old beer soon after I kissed my new girlfriend - about a week after.

It got worse and worse and now it is also accompanied by a lot of belching especially when I got very hungry.

The only relief is drinking soft drinks or brushing my teeth. Drinking milk doesn't seem to make the problem worse.

I have taken no antibiotics and the only medication I have taken in the past three years are mild painkillers and...

I suffered from candida so took probiflora (check google) but it didn't make a difference to my mouth taste symptoms. It cured my candida though.

The taste can best be described as a chicory milky taste. It tastes similar to the milky skin that forms on top when instant coffee is reheated and cooled again.

There are no sores and cracks on the tongue but my saliva feels thicker and creamy.

The main symptoms is the very awful creamy milky taste in my mouth and excessive belching especially when I get very hungry.

Hi, sorry to hear you are having this horrid taste in your mouth.

It does sound to me like it is coming from the stomach though because of the belching. Your empty stomach is definitely trying to tell you something.

I would personally visit the doctor and try out some of the remedies they try for acid rising from the stomach.

Something else that I remember is that 'oil of oregano', a few drops on the tongue each day, will kill all fungal, bacterial infections, so it might be worth trying that.

Best of luck

I am so glad I have found this forum. I hope you ladies are still around I so need some help and answers. Here is a little about me.

I am 28 and have two kiddos. I have been struggling with this awful metallic taste since oh August. I am breastfeeding my youngest and have gotten my cycle back since he was 2 months old and he is now 13 months.

I am really worried bout this taste since I am worried that whatever is wrong with me could be passed to him. I have amaglam fillings so I have freaked myself out that I am posioning him. I did have my mercury level tested and it was the lowest reading. I am going to have further testing to 100% make sure that there is no metal toxicity for the sake of my son.

Here is what I have noticed. When I was trying to get pregnant with my son I had low progestrone so had to take some in order to get pregnant. I do notice that at different times in my cycle this taste is worse. So I am leaning towards some sort of hormone imbalance and of course I am nursing and having my menstral cycle so I wonder if this is the issue?

It is really taking over my life and is hard not to get depressed I cant find anything that helps.

I am also having another set of strange symptoms but I think it is due to the stress of figuring this out. I am having headaches and hair loss but I think the hair loss is from my hormones from having him it is normal to loose hair after a baby and I think that this is just still happening. The headaches are because I think I am clenching my teeth at night. I wake up clenching.

Of course when I google this issue I keep reading that my fillings are posioning me but really I am leaning towards a hormone issue??

I would get my fillings out but this is a no no when nursing because the exposure would be horrible for him.

I so would love to hear from you guys, this is sooo hard :(

Hi-

Your symptoms seem very hormonal to me, I would ask your gyno for a complete hormone panel. Hair loss, headaches etc can be due to hormone imbalance, stress and vitamin deficencies. Changes in estrogen and progesterone can really do a job on you. Since you are breastfeeding your child, he/or see may be nursing less in turn your hormones are fluctuating. I actually went into menopause after my 2nd child at 38 which was when the metallic taste started. When I got them straightened out with hormones the taste went away. So I have found that the taste comes with low estrogen. I just started a new pill and the taste went away. I think if you get a hormone panel done and get your levels straightened out, the taste should go. Just know that its nothing to worry about and I can say this to you as I have delt with this off an on for over a year. Let us know how you do. Good Luck

nbalan-Thank you so much for your response. I hope this is all hormone related I have been so afraid I had some metal toxicity issue and I was harming my son. Do you know if a blood test is accurate on telling me if he is getting exposed to mercury? I did that and it was the lowest reading so I hope that is a good sign in terms of my fillings. I am so glad I found you girls because this whole issue can really bring you down. I am so glad to hear you have found a light at the end of your tunnel!!
If I do have a hormone issue I dont know if there is much I can do while breastfeeding. You know the strange thing is when I asked my ob-gyn about the taste in my mouth and wondering if it was hormonal he had no clue?? Shouldnt he know about or is this not common?

mom2-2kiddos last decade
Well, you would think so, but honestly, I went to my ENT, Dentist, Primary Care and no one knew. It was in a book regarding early menopause that I read that low estrogen levels can lead to taste changes in the the mouth. I dont think it is common as I am sure more Dr's would be aware of it. Dont stress about the Mercury, your son is fine. Millions of women have nursed babies with mercury fillings. I wouldnt have them switched out while feeding him. If you are concerned speak to your pediatrician. Insist on a hormone panel, and you can go on hormones if needed while breastfeeding. YOu may find that once breastfeeding stops the tase goes away, however in the meantime insist on a hormone pannel, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, LH and FSH. It will get better, take it one day at a time. Find something like a gum , mint or drink that changes the taste in your mouth. I think there were some suggestions in the earlier threads.Let us know how it goes.

I have had this problem since hernia surgery in 2004. The only way i can seem to make the taste go away is to make myself throw-up. I have a sense of smell with an awful taste in my mouth. Seems when i eat spicy foods or almost eat anything, this happens. Although i have taken into consideration-breathing in chemicals-work related; so many things i have thought of and it is making my life so depressing because the pain in the top part of my stomach>right below chest just will not go away and heartburn like acid reflux, although i have been on almost every reflux meds made. I have had scans from head to toe... please if anyone has any clues of what is wrong with me.. plz, let me know.. thx

i also have had an appendectomy, tonselectomy, and still have the taste in mouth. It is bitter and an unexplainable taste and i have been told that when i have it no one else can smell it. . Have had excessive wgt gain, and still on the same diet as i have for the past 10 yrs. I am 21 years old and feel like im 90.. plz help me out

I am sorry to hear you are having this problem, it does somehow seem related to your surgery. I am sure you read through the threads, possibly try some of the homeopathic remedys that were suggested. I would also try a naturopathic doctor, as they take a totally different approach than western medicine. As you said you have had scans from head to toe and they havent found anything... that should give you some peace of mind. That being said, your body may be out of balance in some way and a naturopath may be able to help you. I would also sit down with your primary to discuss the issue and ask for some guidance on what to do next. Try not to worry it will get better.

About 2 months ago I had to have all of my teeth pulled and was given full dentures, both top and bottom. Over the past 2 weeks I've started noticing a really nasty/bitter taste in my mouth. At first, I thought it had something to do with not cleaning them well enough. So I had cleaned and brushed them several times before using them again. Also, generally, but not always, when I remove my top denture, the bitterness decreases in intensity. The dentist said it shouldn't have anything to do with the dentures. I just want to find something that I can eat/take to get this nasty taste out of my mouth.

I'm a 41 year old male, so it is likely not hormonal as listed in many of the other posts.

Thanks for listening,

Joe

Glad I found this forum... although the potential prognoses are pretty darn scary. I have my first doctor's visit next week, as symptoms came on about 10 days ago.

I am a 49 yr old male, overweight and borderline diabetic. I became a vegetarian 4 months ago after gout. I do have a root canal I have been putting off. Up until this came on, I drank 3-5 diet pops a day. I am not on nor have been on any meds except for the gout, 4 months ago.

The bitter taste came to me suddenly when drinking a diet coke. For the next couple days I still had an appetite and food tasted normal, except for the pop; I did have acidic food.

About 5 days ago when I woke up the bitter taste was awful, and has remained the same since then. It is the same day and night. My once large appetite is now absolutely no appetite, and I do have a sour throat, although it is not as painful as at first. I do not have heartburn, nor does the taste go away when I eat. Even water seems to exacerbate the bitterness. Antacid tablets make it lessen for about 5 or 10 minutes.

I'll update after my doc visit.

Chandlerraz-

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this..its really frustrating. I would read the earlier posts and take some of that information and apply it to yourself, tips and things people have used to help the taste. Your situation sounds GI related, I would follow up with a GI dr first to rule out GERD and take it from there.

I have just experienced this same tast problem. I am reasonably fit and have a very good diet. I recently had some Chinese Pine nuts and have found some interesting stuff on the net about Pine mouth. So if you veggies have this too I would look at cutting out or changing your nut consumption.
If you google bad taste in mouth you will find quite a few blogs on the subject.
Good luck.

I can relate to this problem, as I have had the same thing develop over the past few years. For the first few years, I could not associate it with anything, but assumed it was something to do with food, as it seemed to flare up after eating. As time went on, I became more sensitive and aware of the horrible taste. It is pervasive once it presents it self, and sometimes it disappears by the next day, but sometimes it lasts for days.

Over time, I have come to associate it with the ingestion of food with preservatives. Since I am a healthy eater, much of my diet consists of organic food, which never causes a problem. But any food, particularly those that must use antibacterial and antifungal agents cause the problem. In particular grains (think of bread products that would mold if on the shelf for more than a day or two), cured meats (prosciutto, salami, ham, etc), wine that has preservatives, but this extends to many foods. My thinking is that it may be a sodium benzoate allergy and am going to be tested for food preservative allergies. Perhaps you have done this already?

I have had a bitter taste for 8 years and they keep coming up with BMS. I have had allergy tests at the hospital and have shown to be allergic to Ammonium Tetrachloroplatine. This is palladium which is found in crowns and fillings. This bitter taste came after I had a gold crown. I am also having a sinus operation in September - nasal polyps removed, nasal passages cleaned out and septoplasty. This could also cause bitter taste. I will not give up. I was also low on B12 and took some but this did not make a lot of difference. The hospital also found I had a wheat allergy but as yet I have not been on a wheatfree diet. I look forward to hearing from anyone. I live in Northampton, UK.
