failure to thrive baby...help please!!

iam reposting this since i got no response previously.

i have a 17 month old baby that has had a weight problem since he was 7 1/2 months old. here is his history.

i had a difficult pregnancy. i developed preeclampsia and had an emergency c section at 35 weeks. nick was born 5 pounds 2 ounces. he developed jaundice and was put on bili lights at home for a week. he was breast fed until 7 1/2 months at which point i stopped because i could not produce enough milk. i had to pump and feed him because he was very lazy at the breast and would never eat more than three to five minutes then gave up. he needed to be constantly held and would only sleep if i put him on my chest and slept with him. he also had infant acne when he was born. it cleared up after two months. he has had small episodes of eczema that are very mild on his elbows and ocassionally on his sides and back. he now has a very very mild case on his elbows. you cant even see it, you can only feel it. it has never itched him.

he only received one vaccine which was two doses of the DPT. the first time he had no reaction and the second time he developed a slight fever but i treated him with NAET and the fever was gone within 1/2 hour.

he has developed normally except for his weight. he is on the very small side for stature as well. he is a very happy baby. he absolutely loves music and dancing. he loves people. he is very social and has no fear. and i mean no fear. he likes to play rough...the rougher the play the harder he laughs. he also loves to take things apart and demolish them. again..rough play. he also loves to play hide and seek and he likes to spin in circles until he gets dizzy and falls down. he is very entertaining and loves to elicit laughs from the crowd. he is a little love bug and likes to go around blowing kisses and giving hugs. he also loves to be outside to play. he loves it when we go on the swings or take a ride in the stroller.

when he turned one he already had 10 teeth and molars. he speaks about 25 different words now at the age of 17 months.

his taste in food varies. he doesnt like to eat the same thing for long. he has a problem with reflux and takes pepcid. if i dont give it to him the reflux starts and his appetite disappears. that is his only symptom for the reflux..lack of appetite. we have to entertain him and let him play with toys while he eats so he will eat more. if his attention is diverted he will let you feed him more than if he is just focusing on the food. occasionally he will eat a very big meal...but as i said that is rare. he doesn't eat as much as peers his age would eat but we feed him more frequently to up the caloric intake. he wakes up once a night and i give him a protein type shake in a bottle to supplement calories further. i also think that a big reason its hard for him to put on weight is that he is EXTREMELY active. he doesnt sit still for a second if he is awake. he is in constant motion.

the only other issue is lately he has gotten several colds but i think that may be normal for his age. the colds last about 10 days to two weeks and he sometimes ends up with a chest cold as well.

we have previously consulted homeopaths who have put him on silica 200c which did nothing for him. we have also tried sulfur and tarantula hispanica. the tarantula was 200c and we gave it to him about 4 weeks ago and have not seen any changes.

i would be so grateful if someone could help me get weight on the child. he hasn't put any weight on for two months now. thanks in advance for taking the time to try and help us!!

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
If he does not like the smell of food, look up Colchicum and give a 30c, one dose only, then wait and see.

I was very concerned to note that you give your 17 month old baby Pepcid on a regular daily basis.

I shall copy information on Pepcid below:

Famotidine is in a class of drugs called histamine receptor antagonists. Famotidine works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces.
¥ Famotidine is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Famotidine is also used to treat conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid and conditions in which acid comes up into the esophagus and causes heartburn, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
¥ Famotidine may also be used for conditions other than those listed in this medication guide.

This drug which is usually used for extreme cases of Acid reflux which usually leads to stomach ulcers is, at least in my opinion, hardly the drug to be used for a baby. It is the long term effects that one has to consider in giving a baby this drug and I would request you to seek expert opinion on the pros and cons of using it for long periods especially for babies.

I have used Nat Phos 6x (biochemic) tablets to relieve Gastric Reflux (GERD) which work in a different manner to the Pepcid by promoting the passage of food from the stomach into the gut and I would like to suggest that you use this remedy after you have sought expert opinion on this matter.

Dose for adults is 2 tablets taken after both lunch and dinner and in the case of your baby, I believe that just 1 tablet should be sufficient.

well joe..it is doctor prescribed and since he doesnt eat at all if he doesnt take it then it is the less of two evils for the time. why do you think i posted his entire history!!! i am still waiting for a reply for a remedy for him that will work!! i would like to give him a constitutional remedy instead of giving him homeopathy like an allopathic drug. i feel that if he is given the correct remedy then i will not have to give him the pepcid that the gastroenterologist prescribed. so if anyone out there can give me a constitutional remedy i would be forever grateful. beleive me, i do not want him on any medications.

Dear Nicks mom, It sounds to me like your little one is thriving very well. He sounds like a happy, intelligent child. My daughter was premature and weighed in at 4lbs at birth. What i have noticed with her, especially as a baby was that she would grow in spurts. Nothing for months and then a a large spike in weight and height. I'm guessing your pediatrician says not to worry unless he losses weight. I also agree that the pepcid seems necesary in this case. I don't believe your son needs any constitutional therapy. There are remedies, though that will help with digestion and acidity, and you would need to see a homepath or do some research to find the one that best suits your boy. From one parent to another, I would advise that you are doing the right things already and in a year or so you will wonder why you worried so much.

Nicks Mom, I did some research and I think Nux Vomica may be the remedy you are seaching for. I posted the Materia Medica for it below. please read the entire post. Now, please keep in mind that I am not a doctor, but what I usually do with my children is give a remedy once and wait to see what happens. You may not need to re dose at all, (indicating a disease cured), or you may find result wear off after a certain time period, in which you may need to redose and again wait. If you continually see improvement but symptoms return you should consult a homeopath as to whether you should swich remedies or continue constitutionally. This is just my personal opinion and feedback would be helpful.

Nux vomica
(Poison Nut)
Is the greatest of polychrests, because the bulk of its symptoms correspond in similarity with those of the commonest and most frequent of diseases. It is frequently the first remedy, indicated after much dosing, establishing a sort of equilibrium of forces and counteracting chronic effects.
Nux is preeminently the remedy for many of the conditions incident to modern life. The typical Nux patient is rather thin, spare, quick, active, nervous, and irritable. He does a good deal of mental work; has mental strains and leads a sedentary life, found in prolonged office work, overstudy, and close application to business, with its cares and anxieties. This indoor life and mental strain seeks stimulants, coffee, wine, possibly in excess; or again, he hopes to quiet his excitement, by indulging in the sedative effects of tobacco, if not really a victim, to the seductive drugs, like opium, etc. These things are associated with other indulgences; at table, he takes preferably rich and stimulating food; wine and women play their part to make him forget the close application of the day. Late hours are a consequence; a thick head, dyspepsia, and irritable temper are the next day's inheritance. Now he takes some cathartic, liver pills, or mineral water, and soon gets into the habit of taking these things, which still further complicate matters. Since these frailties are more yielded to by men than women, Nux is preeminently a male remedy. These conditions produce an irritable, nervous system, hypersensitive and overimpressionable, which Nux will do much to soothe and calm. Especially adapted to digestive disturbances, portal congestion, and hypochondriacal states depending thereon. Convulsions, with consciousness; worse, touch, moving. Zealous fiery temperament. Nux patients are easily chilled, avoid open air, etc. Nux always seems to be out of tune; inharmonious spasmodic action.

thanks for the input samnbudsmom. but actually the pediatrician is the one who referred me to a GI specialist and put the failure to thrive label on him. but as you say i believe my son IS thriving. he does have digestive issues that need to be dealt with as well as allergies (indicated by dark circles under his eyes). other than that he is a very happy, very active child. nux vomica is interesting because that is my husbands constitutional remedy. i will read about it as it relates to children in my book that specializes in remedies for kids and see if it fits his picture. i will let you know if i try it. thanks for your input. any input is greatly appreciated!! i am also going to see if the nat phos gives him some relief from the hyperacidity because i just hate giving him that pepcid every day.

thanks again. and any other comments are welcome.

nicksmom last decade
joe... a quick question. the pepcid is to reduce acidity. i dont think his problem is that the food sits in his stomach but that his acidity levels are too high causing him to be nauseated. i believe this is why he doesn't eat when he doesn't take the pepcid. i saw that you said that nat phos helps by promoting the passage of food from the stomach into the gut which i don't believe to be a problem. do you think the nat phos will still help if it is just hyperacidity causing nausea?

thanks for your help.

My humble opinion is that the properties of Nux Vom do not match the mental and physical state of boy as described by his mom, on reading both very carefully. Nux is more sedentary habits oriented besides other diferences.

nicksmom
His constitutional remedy is Lycopodium.
Put, in the ratio of one drop of liquid medicine Lycopodium 6C in one ounce of distilled water, and shake it vigorously at least 10 times. 1/4 tea spoon of this mixture will be a dose for the baby. Before giving the next dose, shake the mixture again as before.

To start-with, give 3 times daily but as the improvement sets in, reduce the frequency of medication, that is, make it two times a day, then as there is more improvement, make it once a day etc.

Do not make the change over from pepsid to lyco suddenly. Do it step by step as lyco takes over.

Please report progress frequently.

hi sahai...i have read up on lycopodium in "clinical observations of childrens remedies" by Farokh J Master and it really doesnt fit my son at all. can you think of anything else that may fit?

As I stated in my last post I am indeed concerned that your doctor could have prescribed Pepcid for your baby. I do not know in which part of the world you live and what the medical facilities there are but after reading the data about the drug, I would not use it for my baby as the long term after effects can be of concern. The mere fact that this drug was doctor prescribed does not qualify it for any special status as being the ultimate way to help your baby as in many cases the damage that doctors and drugs have done especially in the long run to their patients can fill an encyclopedia.

As you have already seen Pepcid has worked but what you should consider is at what cost to your baby. It is after many years as a patient when I was suffering from multiple ailments and general lack of good health which I now realize was the result of the drugs that I was prescribed that I was introduced to Homeopathy over 30 years ago and I can assure you that it made a very big difference in my life and status of health. This is the reason why I advocate the use of Homeopathic remedies in preference to drugs which I reserve for SOS conditions. You may like to know that I have not used any drugs for about 15 years prior to 2002 when I was in surgery and even since I have not used any drugs up to today. I have only used Homeopathic remedies and at age 76 my BP is 120/80 and pulse 65. This is a tribute to my allegiance to Homeopathy which I have studied and use to help others like you on the forums and those who seek my assistance here in Sri Lanka, free of charge.

Nat Phos 6x still remeins my choice for your baby. It is Sodium Phosphate which at 6x potency is only 1/1 millionth of the salt. Sodium Phosphate is also known as Glauber's Salt and is extensively used in the formulation of drugs. It is obvious that at that potency it is absolutely safe for babies unlike Pepcid which obviously cannot be used on a daily basis by your baby in the future. The miracle of this remedy at that infinitesimal potency is that it still works !

Nat Phos works by changing the chemical balance of the acid and the enzymes in the stomach thereby preventing the formation of hyperacidity which is the reaction of the stomach to food that is not digested and stagnates in the stomach after some time. I would advise you again to use it for a few days and watch the result. If it does not work you can go back to Pepcid or the other remedies that the advisors on this forum have suggested.

I prescribed 1 tablet for your baby but I do not see any harm in using 2 after a meal, which is the normal adult dose since you have given him Pepcid.

ok joe..i will try it. thanks. i dont have 6x on hand..i have ordered over the net. can i use 30c until 6x gets here? please let me know.

and i totally agree on your point of view on using pepcid...that is why i am looking for alternatives. believe me..it pained me to start my son on allopathic drugs. i am a holistic practitioner and student of acupuncture. it was an absolute last resort until i found something else that worked for him. hopefully this will.

thanks.

nicksmom last decade
Only Nat Phos 6x Biochemic will help your son and not the 6x Homeopathic. There is a difference in the two in their manufacture and for some reason that I cannot fathom, they are not compatible with each other in treating ailments. You cannot also use the 30c and it is possible that this potency can even exacerbate the problem.

I gave you more information in my email in response to yours which I cannot divulge on a forum which is open to the public, but believe me that you have taken the right decision for your baby. I shall be delighted if it works as I think that it should.

Please post your baby's response after the first dose of Nat Phos 6x after you stop the Pepcid. It is my conviction that this remedy must work for your baby as it does in the case of adults with the same problem, that makes me passionate about its use as against the abuse of powerful drugs which can create major problems in the future when used in cases such as this.

I shall be very sorry if Nat Phos 6x does not help and we may then have to consider other alternatives.

One question; How long have your used Pepcid ?

joe...i have received that biochemical salt nat phos 6x for nicky. how long do you think he should take it before i can discontinue the pepcid?

You may use the Nat Phos 6x instead of the Pepcid for the next meal and I believe that it should replace it.

You can use 2 tablets for a dose as it is quite safe to use in comparison to the Pepcid.

Joe De Livera last decade
hi joe..quick question. i have been taking nat phos myself because i need to lose weight and read your other thread about it. but now i am getting heartburn where i wasnt before. do you have any answers as to why? thanks in advance.

nicksmom last decade
Forget your weight for the moment.

I am most anxious to hear of your baby's response to the remedy so that he may grow normally without the Pepcid which in my opinion is the reason for his being underweight.

Joe De Livera last decade
it will take a few days to see if it is working for him because the pepcid has a lag in his system. but lets not forget about my weight for the moment because he is MY baby and he is like my twin...so if i am getting heartburn my concern is that he will as well. that was my whole point of bringing it up!

nicksmom last decade
also joe...my baby was diagnosed with failure to thrive and was underweight at least three to four months before he ever took one dose of Pepcid so your theory/opinion is not correct.

nicksmom last decade
Please answer the following questions:

When did you give baby the first dose of Nat Phos ?
Did you also stop the Pepcid ?
What was baby's reaction to the change of medication ?

You must understand that I am most concerned for your baby's health as the Pepcid is not a drug to be given to a baby.

As for your weight please indicate your weight and height and if you consider yourself overweight.

There is no question of Nat Phos 6x being the cause of heartburn. Do you get this symptom before or after a meal ?

Joe De Livera last decade
i have given baby nat phos but i am still giving pepcid once a day instead of twice..after two more days on nat phos i will stop pepcid completely. he is very very thin right now and i cant afford for him to go even one day of not eating. my homeopath has recommended a dose of aethusa 200c due to suspected milk protein allergies and due to the fact that all his problems started when i stopped breastfeeding at 7 1/2 months and switched to formula. but after reading the provings in my "clinical observations of children's remedies" he sounds much more like lac delphinium. actually he sounds exactly like it. so i have ordered both and will try one at a time.

as far as my weight goes i will start a new thread so we can keep this discussion on topic. thanks again joe.

Hi - just a thought.
I read back over your posts and noticed that you give a protein shake at night.
It is possible that this could be making the whole acid situation worse - As he is lying down straight after this (which is a prime position for making reflux worse) and digesting at night, when the whole digestive system should be resting alongwith the body. My advice would be that if you feel he needs the protein shake then give this 2-3 hours before sleep. Is this a self-made protein shake or bought off the shelf? I ask only because the ones off the shelf are mostly designed for adults and may contain too much protein for kids.
If he wakes during the night give sips of lukewarm water only to quench his thirst.
Make sure also that enough water is being given in the daytime to help him thrive well.
I don't know his food preferences but these are good for small, simple, meals:
avocadoes mashed
bananas mashed
a baked potato
red lentils cooked with a very small amount of yeast extract (pref. low salt) to flavour.
Also - for 30 mins after each meal try to keep any activities as quiet activities where he sits still (if possible!!).....and avoid car journies etc as well in this time when possible.

erika last decade
Thank you Erika for your input.

I did not think of the protein which the mother may be giving which in my opinion is quite unnecessary for a 17 month old baby as long as he is having the usual baby food you recommended.
