Procure Aethuja cynapium 1M and take three doses on the same day and report after a week.

One dose is four pellets/one drop mixed in a little water.

Dear Dr.Mahfooz

You are right that Brahmi is Hydrocotyle Asiatica.

In Aurveda it is prescribed for improving the memory.

thanks mr. murthy for confirming my apprehension.

But I again second your advice in this case. The patient has to start it with Aeth: if no response then the second choice.

Dear Readers

Please dont confuse hydrocotyl Asiatica.

Brahmi is a different herb its botanical name is Bacopa monniera L. It is commonly grown in India. It is available in Ticture form in all homeopathic stores by its common name Brahmi Q.It is very effective.

As far as Aethusa Cyn. is concerned we use it in case of small children's dysentry or vomiting of small babies. its characteristic symptom is anguish, crying and ill at ease, vomits after taking milk.

The plant source for Brahmi is Bacopa monniera , a small herb with light purple flowers . It grows in wet and sandy areas and near streams in tropical regions. It is a creeping herb with numerous branches and small fleshy, oblong leaves. Flowers and fruits appear in summer. The whole plant is medicinally useful.

Synonyms for Bacopa monniera Wettst.

Bacopa monniera (L.) Pennell.yes
Lysimachia monnieri L. cent.
Gratiola monnieri (L.) L.
Monniera cuneifolia Michaux
Herpestis monniera (L.) Kunth

The pharmacological effects of Bacopa monniera are attributed to the presence of a number of biologically active compounds, including alkaloids, saponins and sterols. The compounds responsible for the memory enhancing effects of Bacopa monniera are triterpenoid saponins called 'bacosides'.

The chemical structures of some of these compounds are as follows:

BACOSIDE A (Levorotatory)

BACOSIDE B (Dextrorotatory)

(Triterpenoid saponin) (Bacogenin A4 )

Proximate composition of the leaves of Bacopa monniera:

Chemical analysis of the leaves by standard methods gave the values indicated in Table 3.2:

The beneficial effects of Brahmi on memory retention and its effectiveness in alleviating anxiety neurosis have been validated by clinical trials on normal subjects as well as those with specific mental disorders. Preliminary clinical trials performed over thirty years showed encouraging results. Only recently have studies on Brahmi been extended to patients suffering from mild to moderate mental deficiencies.

It is used to treat nervous disorders, senility, insanity, epilepsy, stuttering, and memory loss, and it helps increase intelligence, and awakens the crown chakra. Dear Mazhar

I love to share information. Hydrocotyle Asiatica is used in aurveda/herbal medicine too.The method of preperation is likely to be different from that of the homeopathic mother tincture.

As we are aware the medicinal properties exhibited by the crude substance are very likely to be different when they are used in potencies. We have many examples, the best being Nat.mur.

The Brahmi Q which you are refering to as available in Indian homeopathic pharmacies is very likely to be Hydrocotyle Asiatica.

Let me see whether I get any mention of Bacopa monniera being used in homeopathy.

The above is the well known aspect of Aethusa. But Aethusa also helps for problems with memory.

Boericke: Inability to think, to fix the attention. Brain fag.

Clarke is more explicit.

'One very characteristic symptom is: Inability to think or fix the attention. Guided by this symptom I once gave it to an undergraduate preparing for an examination, with complete success. He had been compelled to give up his studies, but was able to resume them, and passed a brilliant examination.'

There is a lot of discussion on this remedy as related to memory in GV's 'talks on classical homeopathy' too.

Tyler's drug pictures too mention it.

Dear Sir

What we do research and use for memory enhancer is Bacopa only and not the Hydrocotyle at our Institute.

In homeopathic pharmacy there is mention of both Brahmi(Indian medicine) and Hydrocotyle A. as two separate medicine and not one and the same.

Boericke talks about a different Brahmi. (caesalpinia bonducella) in his book

New Manual of Homeopathic Materia Medica and Repertory.

Clinical: Impaired memory; Whooping cough

It is mostly used as a tonic for absent mindedness and for a short and weak memory. It is also used for whooping cough.

Dose: Mother tincture.

Dear Mazhar

You are right. Both Brahmi and Hydrocotyle are available as mother tinctures. I found it out just now.

However in aurvedic preperations Hydrocotyle too is called as Brahmi and used for memory problems as the various references I gave point out to.

It is possible that the Brahmi we are talking about can be prepared from any one of the three bases seen so far. All are said to improve the memory.

Which company uses which one as the ingredient for its Brahmi is the million dollar question now.
