Please help my 5 yr old son-horrible eczema!

Hello,

I have stumbled upon this forum and am excited to get some help. Here is my (son's) story:

My son is now 5.5 and has been suffering from eczema since he was about 4 months old. He was born with great skin but at around 4 months I mentioned to the (stupid) pediatrician that he woke up at night every two hours or so. The doctor thought that maybe he was allergic to something I was eating, probably dairy, and told me to try him out on Soy formula. I went against my gut feeling and gave it to him . In just a few hours he was red head to toe---turned out to be allergic to soy!!! He then developed horrible eczema on his face which traveled to most of his body. The dr told me to get 1% cortisone cream and put it on him. That cleared it up a bit but it never went away. We switched to a new doctor who got him an allergy test and at 5 months he was allergic to: eggs, soy, nuts, wheat, oats and fish. This new doctor gave him a mor e mild steroidal oil which I was able to put all over him and really helped clear up the horrible eczema on his scalp. However, it was of course only temporary and soon the eczema would come back. So here is is now, 5 1/2 hears old and has been suffering from mild to at times severe eczema ever since. It has seemed to get even worse since starting kindergarten in the fall of 2012. (His current allergies are just peanuts-anaphylactic-almonds, macadamia nuts and walnuts.)

Here is my son's personality: very very sweet, cuddly kid. as a baby wouldn't sleep at night unless I held him next to me and then was happy as a clam. Breastfed till 13 months. He is very active, I am thinking he is borderline hyperactive. He is unable to sit still. Sometimes at this age he will watch tv for awhile still but a lot of the time he will be hanging off the side of the couch while he watches tv, etc. Can't sit still without talking at least at school, church, etc. He has a very emotional temper. He has hit me, kicked me, etc though since we have removed all food coloring from his diet and he takes fish oil supplements that doesn't happen much anymore. He has always been an emotional kid. But recently, since starting school I would say, he cries much easier at a lot of things. I should also add he has a baby sister that is 16 months old-which may impact his personality since she is not getting to a very funny age where she attracts a lot of attention=detracting from the attention he gets of course. He still loves to cuddle and comes into our bed every night usually before midnight (which we don't mind). He is very smart, very social once he is comfortable around someone and very funny-he is an entertainer. He loves doing funny voices, funny sayings, etc. He is hysterical. He also prefers me over my husband and will let you know when he is not happy with you-very dramatic, 'I feel like no one loves me', etc. While I have said he is smart, he does have trouble sitting and focusing when I help him read, work on homework, etc. He is very aware of his food allergy and I would say an anxious kid. Though he still acts crazy, takes chances like a normal kid, etc.

Onto his eczema: currently his major patches of eczema are his wrists, the backs of his knees, the tops of his hands, his feet and ankles. His knees are very rough and his elbows are very itchy though not rough or cracking etc. He seems to frequently develop lots of little small bumps that look like pimples on his legs, arms and back/butt. He says they don't itch or hurt but I think they do itch him some because he is always itching just above his butt cheeks. He itches just about everywhere-back of neck (very dry and thick looking), scalp is very dry and flaky, itches his armpits, tops of shoulders/back and arms around the elbow area and shins, feet and ankles. When I put him in the bath it literally looks like he is a tomato-everything gets super red and he itches throughout his entire bath. His neck is also starting to get itchy which is a new spot for him. Underneath his ears, where the skin meets the head is typically cracked and bleeding as is behind his ears, though I don't see him itching in those areas as much as he used to. Also, his fingers get very itchy and he rubs his finger/knuckle area over his clothes, carpet at school, or just itches and picks it until there is no skin left. He has also started getting bumps a little larger that almost look like boils with a white top/center. He has a rash pretty much covering his body most days, though his face has no rash just very dry, skin on eyelids peeling pretty much all the time. The last time he went to his allergiest (SEptember) he was so bad she put him on Oral steroids for a few days -though I only gave him one dose of it which helped.

Onto his diet: I tried removing all dairy from his diet. I didn't see much improvement so after a week I let him have a dairy based smoothie and his skin went crazy. After that he is allowed one piece of soft cheese a day or a small 4 oz container of yogurt. Sometimes about 4 oz of chocolate milk with dinner. I have taken him off of gluten because while his eczema is still bad while he is off of it, it flares up very bad when get eats it again. So I try to keep him gluten free (which is hard with school, family, etc but we try). He is a very habitual eater, would have an organic Cliff bar every morning for breakfast if I let him. So he either has gluten free french toast sticks (Van's), a kids Cliff bar (which has soy in it, as do most things, but it is soy protein so I have taken him off of those for a couple of days with no improvement noted) or a Gluten free Udi's or Whole Foods muffin for breakfast. He will not really try new foods. For lunch everyday he has apple slices or grapes, millet cinnamon crackers or gluten free organic corn chips w/ chia seeds, an organic juice box and a piece of soft cheese. When he gets home he usually has water, salt & vinegar chips for a snack. For dinner he loves steak, chicken, pork and devours roasted broccoli, green beans or carrots (I give him tons of veggies at dinner). We then eat a quinoa/corn pasta, brown rice, quinoa or potatoes along with our dinner. He drinks lots of apple juice as well-not from concentrate. He LOVES pickles-has eaten 8 pickle spears at one time and would eat more if I let him. He also loves Salt & Vinegar chips, loves the smell of vinegar and loves sour candy. He also loves candy in general, junk food etc though I try to limit it. He also loves chocolate...as do I. :)

What I have tried: I have tried tons of Vit C(5000mg a day) which helped at first but then after a week had no effect. I give him probiotics, fish oils, borage oil, multi vitamins and Vit D. He takes zyrtec, benadryl or hydroxyzine daily at bed time. We live in Florida and he has tons of environmental allergies which I think really contribute to his eczema problem. When the pollen it out he is worse. In terms of homeopathy I tried Sulpher 30c (5 pellets 3x per day as the package said) for a week and saw no improvement-possibly a bit worse. I stopped that and then started Antimonium Crudim 30c on the same dosage as the package (5 pellets 3x per day). I have done this for 4 days now and again no difference, skin still horrible. As far as his other physical symptoms, he has a lot of boogers in his nose but it is not runny or green or anything.

On his skin I currently use coconut oil mixed with emu oil primarily. I have been using his steroid oil usually 2 days per week because he looks so horrible, is miserably itchy, itches throughout the night, rubs his skin raw and is definitely more emotional and hyper when he is so itchy. I just need to give him some relief sometimes though I hate that he uses it so much.

I know this is really long I just hope someone can help. I am determined to help my poor sweet boy get better, at least improve in some way. So I really appreciate someone's help. Thank you in advance!!!

Hi Stephanie,
You can order from this sites remedy shop as the
usa health stores don't have the higher potencies like 200c and Q.

On the Urtica Urens, when you order- click
tincture- Q will show up in the next box. This
is a Mother tincture from which other potencies
are made.

The White Chestnut is a Bach flower remedy
and they should have it at the health stores.

Thanks for the replies. I currently have Urtica urense 12 c and arsenic album 30c. There is no way to use those right? If not, no worries. I will overnight the items tomorrow.
Question-in the meantime I understand no steroids but I can still use natural oils on him right? There is no way he will get by without any type of moisturizer whatsoever. And no antihistamines either?

Also wanted to add his skin feels like sandpaper most of e time. And being outside in the heat makes him terribly itchy.he hates to go outside in the summer. Don't know if these details help at all.

The additional information you have given will certainly help while reviewing the case.
Right now you can use natural oils to affected part. But once there is an improvement, we will stop it.

The potency I have suggested, those you please procure and then start the treatment.

I have ordered from the remedy store and will goto the local health food store or Whole Foods this weekend (my remedies will not be here until Saturday I believe-overnighting was over $40!!).

Also, one other thing that i have noticed...not sure if it means anything but when he his skin is at its worst he also has bloody boogers. He doesn't have a nose bleed just when he blows there is blood and little clots, etc.

Again thanks for everyone's interest. I am eager to start the treatment.

I expect to be able to start this on Monday. In reading other posts on here it seem that it is common for eczema to flare up after treatment begins and I am worried about this. Is there anything I should have on hand if we experience this?

It is not necessary that every time the skin problem is aggravated by medicine. In few cases it happen. But it is a good sign. If it happens so then it is better to stop the medicines for some days and after the aggravation is over again start it.

Thanks. One other question-I was reading up on the remedies you suggested and was wondering why you chose arsenic album over antimnum crudum in my son's case? Just out of curiosity, since my son's condition is exacerbated by heat. Thanks :)

A few questions-do I have to give him the mess spaced approx a half hour apart or can it be longer? For instance the tinctures a half hour apart before school, the pellets after school and then separate them in the evening:one remedy before dinner and the others after dinner at least a half hour apart? Will drinking water right after dilute them? Is it okay if he doesn't have an empty stomach? Thanks!

You can give medicine before or after one hour of any meal or food intake.
you can make the thing convenient as per his school schedule. Only to see that there should be gap of at least half hour between two medicines.

So last night was the worst he has had in as Long as I can remember. He was literally up every hour attacking himself, itching himself furiously. Although is skin actually looks a little better. Is this normal? Anything I can do to relieve his itching? Strangely enough on Tuesday night, after I had given him his First dose he barely itched at all.

Thanks so much!

I did not understand properly what you said. Whether he is worse or better...?

I will correct My earlier observation-his skin does Not look better. It looks no worse though.

sbchic1999 last decade
Sorry, I will clarify. Skin looks no worse but his itching is terrible. We are getting a prescheduled allergy test now and he is off the charts for elm, mold, several trees and grasses.

Hi- When eczema is suppressed by allopathic creams,
drugs, etc it goes deeper into the system and people
develop allergies. I have seen this go on with a number
of people I know.

So when treated homeopathically all that was suppressed
starts to come out of the body. The aggravation has to
be managed so it is not so intense.

If you want, click my name and email me about it.

So the allergist wants him to get allergy shots every week to manage his multiple severe outdoor allergies. She also wants me to give him prednisone for 5 days which I am not doing and also wants me to put him on antibiotics for all of his tiny infected bumps (folliculitis she called it) which I am not doing either. He does have many tiny bumps with whiteheads but nothing we haven't been managing fine with our all natural organic coconut oil. She says all of the eczema and skin rashes/bumps is from the allergies.

I did however allow her to give him a dose of Benadryl following his test because of al the huge lumps on his back from eir test. Hopefully that hasn't set him back too far! Sorry!

I will keep updating on his progress.

My suggestion you take the treatment for 10 days and then we can take a reviw as per your feedback

Thanks, R.P.

In the meantime how do I manage his itching? I have to do something about it in the meantime. He literally was itching so bad he probably only slept for 3 or 4 hours last night.

Hi,

two natural things you could try are:

1. Make some strong chamomile tea, cool it off and then
use a washcloth and wipe on his skin and let it dry
on the skin.

2. An oatmeal bath helps- google it- you put the
oats in a mesh stocking over the faucet- or in the tub- so it is
not a mess- this is helpful to many with itching skin.
