Reflux and gas in a 3 month old

I have a 3 month old daughter who is exclusively breast-fed. She has been spitting up large quantities since birth, but it didn't seem to be affecting her negatively.

About 1 month ago, she began waking frequently at night (every 1-2 hours) and seeming uncomfortable. This, combined with the large quantities of spit up, made me think of reflux. I discontinued dairy, citrus, tomatoes, pineapple, onions and soy from my diet. We also elevated her bed. This helped some.

2 or 3 weeks ago, I read some threads on this site and ordered Nat Phos 6x. I started out by giving 1 tablet after every feed for the first day, then have tried to decrease the dose to 1/2 tablet after every feed, then to 1/2 tablet every other feed. When I try to decrease the dose, her signs recur after a couple of days.

When she is taking 1 tablet after every feeding, her spitting up is much decreased and, after a few days, she will sleep better (like 3 hours in a row).

I want to make sure that it is safe for me to give her 1 tablet after every feed (probably a total of 8 tablets a day). Should I add something else in addition or instead of doing 1 tablet after every feed?

Thank you very much for your help.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
JENCLAY,
Please can you describe her a bit more.
What kind of baby she is?
When she is waking up every 2 hrs at night is she Cranky? OR Playful? Dull?
Can you describe her nature? I mean her anger, her likings, dislikes?

Yes, I am sorry for the brief post this morning.

Louise is generally a very happy, smiling baby. When she was sleeping well, she would wake up to eat and go right back to sleep. At the best, she would sleep 6 hours when first put down, then 3-4 hours at a time after that.

Now, when she is waking at night, she is not screaming like my son did when he had reflux/food allergy, but she is grunting and kicking her legs. I would consider this cranky for her. The last few nights, once she could burp or fart, she can relax and get back to sleep, but it takes quite a bit of comforting before I can get her to lay down. Also, she has only defecated once a week since she was born.

Today (during the day), for the first time, she would not allow anyone to put her down during the day. This is really unusual for her. She also seemed very agitated when trying to feed laying on her side, so I elevated her head more. This seemed to help.

Usually, she only cries when she is hungry or very tired. She likes everything. She is so happy. I'm not even sure I can say she has any dislikes.

Yes, exactly as you said. Yesterday, she would not allow anyone to put her down. She was more agitated and wanted to be carried.

I had increased her NatPhos 6x to 1 tablet after each feeding yesterday before I posted. She had a better night last night, but still took a very long time to go back to sleep when she woke. I also gave her a pacifier last night, which I don't usually do, as I heard that it helps some babies with reflux.

To JenClay

I have just read your post of June 3 where you have stated that you have already used Nat Phos 6x which as you may be aware is a remedy that I have pioneered for about 20 years for the treatment of GERD both in babies and in adults. You may like to know that this remedy which is very safe in use is not favoured by classical homeopaths (which I am not) as they were never taught in their colleges, that Nat Phos was by far the most effective remedy to treat GERD for some reason I cannot understand. In adults it must be used in conjunction with Arnica 30c for best results.

You stated:
'2 or 3 weeks ago, I read some threads on this site and ordered Nat Phos 6x. I started out by giving 1 tablet after every feed for the first day, then have tried to decrease the dose to 1/2 tablet after every feed, then to 1/2 tablet every other feed. The answer to your concern is obvious ………. Continue with your therapy and give baby Nat Phos 6x in a full tablet as it seems obvious that half is not sufficient. Do try however to not exceed 6 whole tablets in 24 hours.

If you wish to add another remedy it is Nux Vomica 30c in the Wet dose made as per instructions below.
You will give baby just 10 drops of the remedy in the Wet dose and you will give just 2 doses daily.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Ethanol pack also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this shaking must be done at least 6 times before sipping a capful of the bottle as prescribed.

I hasten to warn you that the use of Arsenic in the dose mentioned for a baby can be considered as dangerous.

Thanks for helping.

Dr joe, you said to decrease the nat phis if possible. Do you think it is best to give it more during the day or at night? Or should I spread it out over 24 hours?

I am not a homeopath (I am a western trained veterinarian) and I am afraid to give anything containing arsenic to my infant, even micro doses.

Thanks again.
