Seasonal allergies, back pain, etc. Page 2 of 3

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
We have to do an assessment before deciding on how to proceed. Are you able to go through the questionnaire he answered and write out each symptom (or feeling or problem) and next to it get him to decide if it is better, worse or the same. If better or worse ask him to estimate via a percentage %.

Evocationer 9 years ago
Sure thing. I will check with him later this evening. He's napping now. I'll get back to you on that.

alaskamom 9 years ago
So I went through what his original complaints were on his questionnaire, and for each item it was a 0% improvement.

Seasonal allergies---are not bothering him at the moment, but they died down once the cottonwood stopped blooming, and so at this point it seems like they are the same as they would have been without the remedy.

Migraines--as usual, he still gets headaches from time to time, so not really any difference there.

Lower back pain--had already improved prior to taking dose of remedy.

Elbow tendinitis--had already resolved prior to remedy.

Mind/emotions--his feelings of anxiety over providing for his family, feeling like a failure for not being able to provide for us the way he wants to--all the same.

Hmmm...ok well then let me examine the case again.

Evocationer 9 years ago
OK.
So on the article I was reading about Carcinosinum, I copied from it the specific symptoms that I felt rang true for my husband. In case it helps:

FEAR

In this part of the cycle the Carcinosin patient is fearful.
They have fear of the future, about their health.
This fear is really about their ability to make their way in the world. If they can’t affect change in their own life, literally everything seems threatening, uncontrollable.

LET THEMSELVES BE TAKEN CARE OF

If you have a fear about your own ability to make your way in the world, the easiest thing is to let someone else do it for you. You let them take care of you. Often this is a pattern developed in childhood. An overbearing parent may ‘train’ the patient to be dependent, by not encouraging them to make their own decisions, by constantly doing things for them, or by giving them the message that they are not capable of doing things for themselves.

INWARDNESS

Likewise, because Carsinosin wants to be taken care of, they have to submit their will to the will of the person who is doing the caretaking. They begin the process of losing their sense of self, not really knowing themselves as much as they should, not being a solid individual. They hear only the vague voice of who they really are, who they were meant to be.

So they are quiet and inward. They tend to hold on to their feelings in this phase, to suppress them. They don’t speak out. Things dwell and swell up inside of them.

Other specific symptoms include: cautious, reserved, responsive without interest, taciturn, suppresses his desires, aversion to company, anger with silent grief, suppressed grief, and answers in monosyllables.

RESENTMENT

They get resentful. They can’t hold it in completely any more. They become contradictory. Symptoms which reveal this idea are: delusions he has suffered wrong, and unhappiness due to influence of others.
Discontented, disgust, anger at his mistakes, remorse, sensitive to reprimands, conversation aggravates.

Anything that makes them feel closed in bothers them. They have fear in narrow places or riding in a carriage (closed in). At this phase, everything that looks like consolation or affection makes them worse: consolation aggravates and seaside air aggravates. Eggs, fruit, and milk were comfort foods. Now they either are averse to, or aggravated by them.
I thought this part was interesting because he doesn't like the seaside (says it's too windy), and he hates milk. He tolerates eggs but they must be in or with something else. He only occasionally likes fruit.

FRENETIC BREAKING OUT

Finally they have to break out. They are excitable, sexually intense. They are on their own. They finally can take care of themselves. Symptoms include: Desire for travel, restlessness.

But the excitability increases. Starting from noise, sleeplessness, biting fingers (in his case, fingernails)

They start taking care of others. These rubrics include: Caring for others, too much of a sense of duty, anxiety about family, full of cares for others, anxiety for others. They do many things for others.

Finally it is just too much activity. They move to the next segment of the cycle.

BREAKDOWN

They break down and are weak, sad. Dullness, concentration difficult, want of self confidence, sadness, weakness of eyes, sexual desire diminished.

And so, the breakdown and weakness push them back into being fearful, and the cycle is back to the beginning and starts around one more time.

Who wrote this article?

The New England Journal of Homeopathy. Is it an accurate representation of carcinosinum?

Well, there are many recognizable symptoms of Carc in this article, but I do not recognize the picture they are trying to create from them. I feel like it misses the 'essence' of this remedy. I don't feel it is incorrect - but it seems too generalised and too much like other remedies (Ignatia, Nat-mur for example). I agree it may look like those remedies, but has it differentiated itself from them?

These are the themes of the remedy from my experience in clinic with these patients (those who are deeply in the state of the remedy):

Control, domination
Suppression, repression
Sacrifice, martyrdom
Invasion, violation
Perfectionism, faultless
Duty, order
Fear of reprimand, of punishment, need to be the 'good one'

So the central state of this remedy is where someone or something has exerted extraordinary control over them. Due to this control, they have had to repress their own desires and feelings, and submit. They allow someone or something to take over their lives, to run it. To survive this situation, they must follow the commands of this controlling force exactly, doing exactly what they are told, and doing so without mistakes for fear of punishment. To not be perfect means to be punished and then forsaken. They are only loved when they are perfect.

It is possible to see such people break free of control and domination, becoming the exact opposite (rebellious, combatative, disobedient) but it is in response to the internal feeling - I must be perfect, must be what others want, or I will be forsaken.

Carcinosin is ruled by the need to be perfect, to be faultless, to be in control.

Yes you will see other symptoms - sympathetic, sensitive, artistic, restless, desire to travel, love of animals etc - but these things don't differentiate the remedy, do not define the internal struggle.

The miasmatic state (C-ancer miasm) of which this remedy is the centrepoint, is a small person trying to stretch themselves far beyond their capabilities, in a superhuman effort to be or to control something. For example, this is the situation of the young child of alcoholic parents, who must be the adult and look after them, despite being a child themselves.

Thanks for taking the time to describe that. Even though the article may have been off, from what you described, it does definitely sound like Carc is the remedy for him here. Controlling, overbearing stepdad, had to submit or be punished. The way they practiced their religion was also controlling. My husband did have a rebellious time, in his late teens/early 20's, where he did all the 'wrong' things like living with girlfriends, drinking, smoking, partying, etc, and then decided to settle down at 30 and get married. But it seems like that desire for perfection and to be in control still is there. It is especially apparent in his work. He is an overachiever and is perfectionistic in what he does. He does excellent work of course, but he's never happy with the amount of money he makes. He's never good enough for us in I his mind, always failing his family, never reaching his goals, never making it in if life. Never good enough. I suppose he is always thinking he's never good enough for me, and I'm thinking I'm never good enough for him. Hah. Sad!

And yet, the remedy seems to have had no effect.

Did he only have the one dose? Perhaps we should try another?

I have to admit though, it sounds like you just described Nux-vomica.

Evocationer 9 years ago
Yes, just one dose. It's your call, I do have Nux Vomica on hand, in 30c and 200c if we wanted to try that. Do you think it would be best to try it next? We can always come back to the Carc later.

alaskamom 9 years ago
Well I just read an article about Nux Vomica (http://www.homeorizon.com/homeopathic-articles/materia-medic..., and I think this sounds exactly like my husband. The only difference is that it seems like the Nux personality is his 'ideal', like that's what he wants to be---strong, ready for anything, prepared, etc---but he always feels that he can never be in that place in life. Not enough money is always the problem, and he can't situate himself the way he wants. So he gets depressed or despondent about it, and yet stays faithful working in his job, but all the while he just wants to run away from it all. The wanting to run away waxes and wanes. I think deep down, he sees his family (me and the kids) as holding him back from where he wants to be. Or we are a liability of some sort. He wants to protect us, too, but he feels he can't do it properly, so he just wants to bail on all of it.

I hope this is helpful in some way. Just trying to 'flesh out' the picture.

alaskamom 9 years ago
Hey there. I was wondering, are you still reviewing this one, or was I supposed to be trying Nux?

My husband feels like he is at his breaking point. He is so fed up with getting nowhere in life and not being able to change where is at. He feels like if he didn't have a wife and kids, he would just run away somewhere far. I think the responsibilities are just overwhelming him. I want to help him if I can.

If I look at ...

Escape, attempts to, from his family - adam, am-c, choc, falco-pe, lac-e, lyc, nat-sil, nux-v, phasco-ci, phos, positr, Sep, staph, plat

... refined by the follow rubric ...

Delusion, neglected, his duty (duty conscious)

... this highlights the follow remedies:

Falco-pe
Lac-e
Lyc
Staph

Now that brings up some interesting choices. You won't like it because of the need to buy remedies, but I have to say that both Falco-pe and Lac-e both look good to me. These are remedies made from two animals - the Peregrine Falcon and the Horse. I know both these remedies from cured clinical cases of mine.

Let me mull over this a bit further.

Evocationer 9 years ago
Well I'm sure I can placate my husband about buying remedies, since I am now working on fixing up things I can get for cheap or free and selling them for a profit.

Just in reading articles about the characteristics of Falco Perigrinus and Lac Equinum, it seems to me that the Lac-E is a better fit. The Falcon remedy seems to be the kind where they will fly into a rage, whereas my husband is very very controlled when it comes to anger. I believe he has a LOT of anger bottled up, which has been internalized (hence the high blood pressure).
Anyway, the descriptions I've read of Lac-E seems more apt, like a horse getting despondent at being trapped or cooped up, unable to run free, getting anxious/neurotic and high strung from being in captivity. Makes a lot of sense.

alaskamom 9 years ago
Yes! Well done - exactly my thoughts - exactly! And from my own experience with the remedy that is how they present as people too.

The main conflict for Horse people is between the desire to run free, and their obligation to work hard. The feel weighed down by the responsibilities of their work, of what is expected of them, and they keep working despite their desire to be free.

Would you be willing to try it? 200c would be fine as the first dose.

Evocationer 9 years ago
Great! Yes, I asked and he would be willing to give it a try. We might need to wait till the first of the month to order it, since it will cost a bit more than the vials at the whole foods store.

alaskamom 9 years ago
I just received the Lac-E today in the mail. How shall I dose?

alaskamom 9 years ago
Give him a basic dose first - 5 hits, 3 drops, 100mls, 2 teaspoons, once only.

Awesome, thanks.

I just wanted to pop in and say that the remedy is helping my husband. After he got his first dose, he seemed happier, less agitated/stressed/tense. His outlook improved, even though our situation is the same. He wasn't feeling like he just wanted to run away from it all, it seemed, he was willing to stay and just do what was at hand to do until something better came along. That first dose was given on the 8th, and then by Friday he was back to feeling stressed and like he just wanted to jump ship, so we did another dose. He actually asked me about it, because he noticed that it seemed to help before (he's a little skeptical, so that was neat that it made that much of a difference for him). So I feel we're on the right track.

alaskamom 9 years ago
Even more good news. That will make everything much easier if we can get him on track as well. You did the right thing to redoes him - it is often the case that the patient can feel the need.

Evocationer 9 years ago
Great, glad to hear it was the right time to redose.

alaskamom 9 years ago
Hey there. Wondering if we should re-dose for a flare-up of back pain from him riding over bumpy roads at work in his cement truck? He's been sore all weekend. His mood has been good, so not really indicated to re-dose based on his mood. He has been happy, actually has had an even higher sex drive lately (unfortunately--with mine on the fritz), and hasn't felt the need to take more except having the back pain.

alaskamom 9 years ago
I don't think that would be the right reason to take the remedy again. Unless that becomes a 'stuck' symptom it should be allowed to heal on its own.

Evocationer 9 years ago
OK good to know, thanks.
