Please update me daily. If this doesn't subside in a day, i will antidote the remedy.

The remedy was chosen in the long term interest of your son and it matches him closely.

Ok, I'll keep you posted.

I do want to clarify that last night wasn't necessarily worse than *some* of our prior nights the last 3 months. He's had nights like that before...they are not unheard of. So I'm not sure if it's the remedy, or just him.

Sigh. It's so exhausting living on 3 hours of sleep a night! Good thing he's cute. :-)

Hi zaftig. Need your help quickly. My husband wants to give out son out OTC homeopathic teething remedy tonight. It has chamomilia 5c arnica 5c borax 5c and hypericum perforatum 5c.

I have told him we should wait 2 days before we introduce anything new but he's not listening. What should I do?

Hi Zady,

Here's your daily update :-)

Last night, not *quite* as bad as the night before, but still not great. I want to say we had 4-5 wake ups all night, with a couple of stretches of sleep that lasted 2-2.5 hours. However, we also had 1-2 wake ups that occurred after only 1 hour, and when he did wake all times, he was crying somewhat hysterically (for him). Just a really demanding, piercing cry vs. his sort of whiny, 'come get me cry' that he often does.

We also had a period around 3/4 am where he just couldn't really fall back to sleep easily. He had to be latched on nursing and every time he came off on his own, he'd get very upset and have to latch on again.

Again, this isn't terribly new or different. It's happened before. But it's in phases. A lot of times even though he wakes a lot, he is more quick to get back to sleep and doesn't need to stay latched on so long.

I ended up not giving him the OTC teething remedy I told you about until 12am. And even then, I didn't give him the proper dosage. I gave him one dose, but the instructions state to give one dose every 15 minutes for the first hour.

Thanks!

What are the probable reasons for his waking up at night and crying?
1) Teething?
2) Fright?
3) hunger?
4) wakes suddenly with a jerk?
5) wakes up startled?
6) wakes up screaming n clings to u?
6) wakes up at slightest disturbance/noise?
6) Any soreness in gums?
7) earache?
8) can only sleep back in ur arms and wakes up when you try to put him down to bed.

Which ones apply?

Hi Zady,

It's so hard to know why he wakes so much.

I definitely think some of it could be due to teething pain/discomfort.

We do often have the issue that he falls asleep being nursed or held, then wakes when we transfer to crib and cries. Once in awhile he'll settle himself and fall aslep, but a lot of times I must start the process over again.

I don't think it's from fright or startling, as when he first wakes his body is calm. Though I guess it's possible he's having dreams and even nightmares that wake him up.

Sometimes I do think he wakes up due to slight disturbance or noise. Like, if he's in our bed and I barely brush him, he'll wake up and start crying. I can only assume it's because he wasn't deeply asleep enough, as other times when I've had to wake him in the morning, I can stroke him and talk to him, and it can take minutes to rouse him.

I don't think it's hunger. He will nurse, but not eat much and is often latching just for comfort.

It's not earache, as this has been going on for months.

It's possible now that it's winter and he's wearing heavier pajamas, that he is getting hot once he comes into our bed in the middle of the night. But again, that's only been in the last 2-3 weeks that he's been dressed heavier. He still woke up a lot when the weather was mild and more stable.

I believe part of the problem is that we've created a bit of a dependency on his part to rely on us to help him get back to sleep once he does wake up. We are not necessarily willing to break that, because it would pretty much require that we make him 'cry it out', and we're not sure about that method. I know he knows how to go to sleep on his own, because he does it every day at daycare. He just isn't good at home b/c he knows we will help him.

However, I still wish to reduce his number of night wakings and I don't know how to do that. My guess is:

teething discomfort

wakes up between a sleep cycle for really no reason, but knows we will help him get back to sleep so he cries for us.

Possible dreams/nightmares, but not this frequently (like every hour!)

Possible getting too hot in our bed (but again, that's only recent and he had these issues well before that).

I have no idea if this is helpful. Sorry!

1) Does he dread downward motion - the act of putting him down or taking him down while he is in your arms?

2) What's your diet like? What are you eating everyday?

3) Are you taking any medication, even vitamins, iron, etc? Please list everything here.

Zady101 last decade
Sometimes he does not like to be put down after being held. I can't say if it's that he doesn't like the motion itself, or just wants to be held. Because as soon as I pick him up again, he is happy.

My diet is fairly healthy (I try at least). Here's a typical list:

Oatmeal with fresh blueberries or nuts like almonds, pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, dried fruits.

Tea

Sandwich with sprouted grain bread, mayo, slice of cheese, avocado, roasted chicken

Apple/banana

Dinners can be anything! Roasted veggies like brussel sprouts or cauliflower, roasted chicken breast. Soups with meat like pork or chicken, veggies, chicken stock, onions, tomatoes, spices (we use a lot of middle eastern spices in our cooking), kale, arugula, fennel, sweet potatoes, coconut milk, We'll make pizza at home a lot with fresh tomatoes, dough, cheese, veggies like squash, zucchini, mushrooms, garlic. I use a lot of garlic in our food. Olive oil, coconut oil. Sometimes I eat sweets like ice cream, or cookies from Whole Foods. I sometimes eat a fair amount of chips and salsa. Sometimes potato chips. I eat eggs on the weekends a lot, sometimes bacon, homemade potato hash. This is not a complete list of course, but gives you an idea of my overall diet. We eat almost 100% organic.

I avoid coffee in general but sometimes I get a decaf mocha drink from Starbucks which has dairy.

I have not been able to find an association between a particularly good or bad night and a food I've eaten. Am interested to hear your thoughts on this. I'd be willing to cut out dairy if necessary.

I take a fair amount of vitamins, no meds.

Cod Liver Oil w/ Vitamin D. If not Cod Liver, then regular Fish Oil. Fenugreek, my prenatal vitamin, a Vitamin B Complex. Psyllium capsules which I just started again about a month ago after being off of 1 year.

That's it for vitamins.

Thanks!

Chamomilla 6C

Dissolve 3 pills in 3 teaspoons water, stir a few times and give him to drink. Do this TWICE everyday for 2 days.

Note: Please stop pre-natal vitamin and B Complex untill i ask you again.

Update me on 3rd day.

Zady101 last decade
Ok will do this.

What do I do if my husband insists on giving him our OTC teething remedy? He likes it because it has Arnica in it, and he thinks just the Chamomilla isn't enough.

stealme last decade
Let him give it. Hold back Chamomilla 6C in that case. The other restrictions on Vitamins should still apply.

Zady101 last decade
Thanks. I'll definitely try for the Chamomilla. I want to see if we can find something that works. But I didn't think we'd want to mix the two so your confirmation is helpful.

Thanks.

stealme last decade
The OTC has chamomilla in it, so giving both together is not recommended. You give this or that, your son is expected to improve. Do follow restrictions n update after 3days.

Hi zady,

I know I was supposed to update you yesterday but I didn't get the chance. Did chamomilia 6c Thursday and Friday. I can't say sleep has improved much. He didn't wake every 45 min but it was still like every 90 min to 3 hours and sometimes challenging to get back to sleep, meaning it took awhile even though I know he wanted to go back to sleep.

I am still off the two vitamins.

Thanks.

stealme last decade
Please do not take

'Cod Liver Oil w/ Vitamin D. Fish Oil. Fenugreek, Vitamin B Complex. Psyllium capsules', and stop Chamomila also

for only 2-3 days

and update me.

Zady101 last decade
Ok.

Last night, we had a 5 hour stretch! Slept from about 8:30pm-1:30am with no wakeups. But then, we were back to our normal 60-90 minutes and again, sometimes challenging to get back into a deep sleep. I'd think he was asleep, then 10-20 minutes later restless and crying again.

But the 5 hours was nice!

stealme last decade
Hi Zady,

Here's the update for you! I think it's been maybe 4 days since I stopped the vitamins but I've lost track!

My son's sleeping is still about the same as it's always been. Not as bad as the every 45-90 minute wakeups though. The last few nights we've had some 3 hour stretches of sleep, and we did have that one 5 hour stretch!

What's been most challenging the last 2-3 nights is some difficulty in the middle of the night getting him BACK to sleep. I will nurse him, he seems to be asleep, then 5-10 minutes later he's awake again and we start all over. This will happen maybe 3 times in a row before he finally falls back to sleep all the way.

Chamomilla 6C

Dissolve 3 pills in 3 teaspoons water, stir a few times and give to him to drink. Do this THRICE everyday for 2 days and update me.

Zady101 last decade
Hi zady,

Here's the update. Thursday we did the chamomilia 6c 3 times. He didn't sleep great. Woke every 1-2 hours. Friday we only got to give him two doses. I think he only woke 3 times. A good night! Last night again not great. More wakings but also more difficulty getting him back to sleep.

Should we keep pursuing this route? I'm just not sure I'm really noticing any sustained improvement.

Thanks!

Arsenicum Album 30C

Dissolve 2 pills in 2 teaspoons water, stir a few times and give him 1 teaspoon from this. Throw away the remaining 1 teaspoon.

Do this once only.

Zady101 last decade
Thanks Zady. Do you know if I can find that at Whole Foods?

Also, I came down with a HORRIBLE cold. I bought some Coldcalm at Whole Foods and started taking it this morning. Have you heard of this? It's by Boiron and a mixture of different remedies.

Will me taking this interfere with whatever I give my son since I'm breastfeeding?

Thanks.

stealme last decade
The answer to both the questions is yes.

Zady101 last decade
Would you recommend waiting to give him the arsenicum until i'm done with the coldcalm? and if so, how many days should i wait?

It's one of the worst colds I've had in a long time, I need to do something to alleviate the symptoms so I thought this was a good choice. If you have another recommendation I'm open!

Thanks!

stealme last decade
If you already started taking it, i cannot do much. Once u feel better, you can stop it.
