help for my ADHD boyMy 10 yo is gifted, highly creative, but can't sit still, stop fidgeting or stay quiet during instruction. "A" student. Shifts in his seat and mumbles under his breath or makes goofy noises while he works. Hears everything, but looks like he's distracted, cuz of all the hyperactivity. Gets embarrassed by teachers' reprimands, comes home angry, and lashes out at family. Has never taken any meds. Herbs, diet, vits & mins and cranio-sacral therapy has helped some, but not enough. Teachers are fed up; family is exhausted trying to stay one step ahead...

♡ John Stanton last decade
At 3, he was treated with homeopathics, and seasonal attacks subsided (don't remember what medicinal).
Until last year. Nowadays, the asthma kicks up with exercise (he plays soccer).
No other chronic physical ailments.
Rarely gets sick -- occasional cold. Was treated once for strep throat w/ antibiotics :(
Has had all childhood vax.
No white spots on nails, but he is a nail biter.
Scanty appetite, but raging once he's hungry. Likes plain, unspicy food. Does not eat dairy (cheese, yogurt or eggs) or seafood. Craves sweets (but doesn't get access to very much! :)
He is very sensitive.
As a baby, very sensitive to light, sound, taste, movement , aural energy, certain fabrics. Liked to be swaddled tightly. Very light sleeper.
Less obviously sensitive to environmental factors now, but very sensitive to criticism or teasing (esp. at school); is easily frustrated. Does not like being singled out for negative behavior (esp at school) and becomes sad, self-hating (this breaks my heart). Or becomes argumentative, rages, will try to "get away with" stuff. Blames others to avoid responsibility for bad decisions. Can be verbally abusive to sibs during these times.
Can also be very affectionate, thoughtful and sweet.
Thank you for your consideration!

(Sorry for such a long delay in replying -- computer problems kept me off-line!)
Since my original post, I have taken my son to see a Naturopath who is prescribing Lycopodium (3 30c pellets every 3 days). DS played last soccer game w/o wheezing. Fewer anger outbursts; more calm. We have a followup in 3 weeks.
I have read up a bit on Carcinosinum -- what an insightful, thought-provoking recommendation. I will bring this up with the dr when we return for the followup.
Thanks again for your help.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder of children, afflicting about 35% in the U.S. It is often believed to be a physiological brain disorder with a genetic component. Children with ADHD are impulsive, overactive, inattentive, poor learners, and are frequently disruptive, aggressive and uncontrollable.
ADHD is treated medically with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, oral antihypertensives and antidepressants. While these medications can at times be effective if carefully monitored, side effects are possible, and most of these drugs should not be (though sometimes are) given to children under age six because of risk of toxicity or lack of dosage information due to inadequate testing for adverse drug reaactions in this population. Twenty percent of ADHD children do not respond to the first stimulant drug tried, or have a negative reaction to it.
Clinicians using homeopathy for ADHD have reported good results, but objective evidence has been lacking. Now, a double blind, placebo-controlled study of 43 children with ADHD shows that homeopathy can be effective in treating the disorder.
In a study published in the British Homeopathic Journal, Oct 1997, children afflicted with ADHD were given either a homeopathic treatment or a placebo for ten days, then parents or caregivers rated the children on the amount of ADHD behavior they displayed. Those receiving homeopathic medicines showed significantly less ADHD behavior than those given placebos.
When evaluated in a follow-up interview two months after the study's end, 57% of the children showing improvement with homeopathy had continued to improve, even though they had discontinued the homeopathic medicines; twenty-four percent relapsed by the time of the follow-up; and the remaining 19% continued to experience positive results, but only while taking the homeopathic medicines.
The homeopathic medicines found most helpful for ADHD were Stramonium, Cina and Hyoscyamus niger. Stramonium was specifically indicated when children had many fears, or suffered symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder; children who were physically aggressive benefited most from Cina; and, children with manic or sexualized symptoms responded most favorably to Hyoscyamus niger.
Below is an alphabetic listing of homeopathic remedies and a brief summary of how each might be applied to children with ADHD or ADHD symptomolgy.

Chamomilla would have been helpful when he was a baby , (especially for that early evening colicky time: " bad temper, who are very irritable and impatient; who are complaining, frustrated, restless, and thirsty; who are contrary, not knowing what they want; who demand one thing and then want something else. The chamomilla child is fidgety and quiets down once he has attracted attention. He wants to be carried everywhere, but will whine and scream. He will settle down if carried, jiggled, or rocked" -- wish I had known of it then! He never was hypersensitive to touch, tho; fact, he loved being caressed and massaged, esp after a warm bath (one of the ways we were able to soothe him out of a crying jag).
I thought Hyoscyamus started out sounding familiar, but this description is waaay more extreme than anything we're dealing with... he definitely has "poor impulse control;" acts "silly and foolish" (sometimes inappropriately) in order to get attention (mostly from peers -- Jim Carrey is his "idol"); sometimes he does seem to intentionally want to "embarrass parents" and "shock" people with risk-taking stunts. He is "jealous" of his sibs at times, but is also quite affectionate and caring at times as well.
The Lachesis profile also bears some similarities, esp in the past (much of this this described him at age 7-8, but not so much lately). Perhaps all the bodywork & TCM therapies have been helpful. Has he matured, or shed these tendencies, or are they buried?
At any rate, we're seeing continued improvement in overall demeanor with Lycopodium (generally seems calmer and happier). He did develop some cold symptoms early last week (runny nose, dry cough, hacking phlegm), and wasn't up for Tuesday soccer practice, and was wheezing at Thursday's soccer game, but did not use the inhaler. He came very close to losing his temper when another kid cursed at him, and I was right proud that he didn't follow through with his impulse get revenge (though he was still very bothered by the incident for a number of hours afterward, and would rant about it as if it just happened...).
Mostly, I think he's just a very smart, very spirited 10 year old boy.
I do so appreciate all your suggestions.
