Chronic cough for my 1 and 1/2 year old toddler

Hello,

My son Abhigyan who is 1.5 years old now has been suffering from chronic cough since he was 7 months old. On the good advice of my relatives I've approached two experienced homeopaths with two different lines of treatment (not simultaneously). We're based in Bangalore (lots of dust and pollution)

Doctor 1 analyzed the case and prescribed Natrum Muriaticum - 1M from 7th month. He mentioned cough is because of vaccines. We gave him NM-1M once in a month and subsequently the period increased from 1 to 2 months but the remedy did not seem to work. He continued coughing until we went to Punjab in cold weather.

In Punjab his cough sounded of a different kind and Doctor 2 prescribed Belladona 30C which worked immediately. On return to Bangalore his original croupy cough returned back. On advise of Doctor 2 we're now giving him ANTIM TART 200 for 3 weeks now. He was better after week 1, week 2 I had to get him nebulized and week 3 he coughed and expectorated clear slimy frothy cough as he always does. Please advise a working remedy that helps get rid of the root problem of cough.

Please answer the following questions about him.

- Describe his behavior with parents, siblings, other children, visitors and total strangers.

Parents and known people usually easy going. During cough spells wants to be held.

Other children - very happy to play and mingle.

Visitors/Strangers - maintains distance, cries if held. Gradually feels at ease post a couple a days.

Does not like noisy/commotion environments. Appreciates his own personal space

- Which part of the body does he sweat most?

Head, Neck and back

- Any problems during pregnancy or delivery?

C-section, did not descend into the birth canal. Birth weight - 2.8 kgs

- What food does he like to eat most?

Likes all food. Not a fussy eater but like spicy, salty and sweet food

- What makes his cough and cold worse and what makes it better?

Cough worse - exposure to cold dry air, possibly even wet moist damp weather, emotion like anger, frustration. Coughs at random times of the day. Sometimes at 4AM sometimes at Noon. No identifiable specific trigger of cough

Cough better on expulsion of phlegm or vomit along with food. Sometimes putting him to sleep in a calm environment works.

- Is he normal wrt his development milestones and general intelligence.

Absolutely no problems in his general development.

- What time of the day does he suffer the most?

No specific time. Random times. Yesterday he coughed at 4AM. Today at 12PM.

Acidic stool and colic until 6 months
Standard cold, cough and fever.
Runny and stuffed nose only at night after sleeping
White patches on cheek since last 4 weeks

- Which part of the body does get affected the most when he has cough and cold?

Breathing in chest is erratic. You can see intercostal muscles working hard when cough is extreme. That's when I took him to get nebulized.

-Does he like to remain inside the house or play in parks?

Likes to go out and play in park.

- What is the color of his sputum mostly?

Clear, transparent, frothy and slimy. When he coughs it sounds like seal barking and feels like the phlegm is loose but wrapping his throat and unable to come out. Ultimately after 60-90 mins of coughing and piling up it comes out as clear frothy slimy mucus sometimes with food particles.

- Any blood from his nasal passage ever?

Yes possibly once while trying to pull out crusted phlegm in his nostrils but never as free flowing blood in phelgm.

rishimba last decade
Does he like taking cold or warm drinks?

Mostly warm milk or water. Very few times cold drink through spoon (which he liked)

Does he vomit milk when coughing after a feed?

If he's coughing and restless before the feed, 80% of the time he will vomit after the feed whether from bottle or breast.

What is his response to touching, cuddling or caressing?

He generally like to be held by parents and has a positive response to touching, cuddling and caressing. However at the times when he's coughing and restless he only wants to be held. At that time if I as a parent want to comfort him using physical means he doesn't like it. Also he particularly likes similar repetitive movements when being comforted physically like jumping on my legs or moving up and down with his head on my chest.

What is the smell of his sweat like? Describe if you can.

No particular smell but excessive sweating and neck and back usually wet. Leaves stains on bedsheets. Becomes very sweaty in the night without fan but moment you put fan on his nose will be blocked and he will not sleep and be irritable. When he gets up in this state his preference is to feed from mother or bottle. Usually catches hold of both his feet in sleeping position and bangs them on the bed crying until the above is made available. Still feeds upto 3 times in the night. Do let me know if you want me to look for a particular smell. Urine is usually yellow to pale yellow. Water intake is lower than milk intake.

Did you ever see him chewing on wood or chalk?

No

Is he generally happy or irritable? How often does he cry or scream and for what reasons?

He is generally happy now. Used to be very irritable till around 8 months and liked to stay only with his Mom or Nanny. Cries and is upset when:

1. Is coughing.
2. Daddy/Mummy scolds him
3. Is hungry
4. Is sleepy
5. A toy is taken away
6. He is taken away from a particular place to avoid accident.
7. Is tired
8. Is put into a noisy environment with guests at home or too much traffic outside.

Usually distraction like a chocolate or taking him away from a noisy environment and comforting him in private works for all above except when he's coughing.

While playing around, does he move often or does he sit on one spot and plays with his toys?

If toy is new he will spend upto 10-15 mins. Old toys he likes to get everything from the rack and put it on the floor. Short attention span with toys. Likes watching cartoon on TV. Will stay put for hours together with TV on.

Please give him 3 doses of CALCAREA CARBONICA 30C on a single day, each dose 4 hours apart.

Give the doses in empty stomach and clean mouth. Don't give him feed one hour before or after taking the doses.

You need to stop all remedies first that he was taking earlier. This is his constitutional remedy.

Note the changes and keep me informed. If he relapses after an initial relief of symptoms, the remedy will be repeated.

rishimba last decade
Please elaborate on 'what is one dose'? 1 DRAM pills is what I usually get at the pharmacist. How many pills each in one dose for 3 doses 4 hours apart?

Also the previous 2 homeopaths that we had consulted had done nearly similar analysis and Doc 1 came up with his recommendation of Natrum Muriaticum - 1M (single dose) and Doc 2 suggested we use ANTIM TART 200C 1 dram pills

On the basis of what difference from the info I provided did you come up with a different constitutional remedy?

Also after taking Antim Tart 200 initially he was absolutely fine for 1 week without any cough and Doc 2 suggested we continue the remedy - 1 DRAM (pills) only if there is a relapse. But it did not work once it relapsed. Hence I turned to this forum. As of now he's still taking Antim Tart 200. I will go tomorrow to buy the remedy.

The question is how do I judge an overall improvement if repeating the same dose does not work post relapse? Do we have to continue on hit and trial and change remedies often?

NOTE: Cough is barky and loose, starts at anytime of the day, sputum is odorless, transparent, frothy and slimy.

abhigoogle last decade
One dose would be 3 drops of remedy in a tablespoon of water slowly sipped up in clean mouth and empty stomach.

Or if you buy pills, keep 2 pills under his tongue and let them dissolve in his mouth by themselves.

I can understand why nat mur or ANTIM TART was given to him. But these are not his constitutional remedies. They will just act on symptoms, if at all but won't cure the problem for good.

He seems to be a CALCAREA child going by his generals and specific symptoms. This remedy will not only relieve his presenting symptoms, his tendency to catching cold will also be reduced. He will have overall improvement in his immunity towards cold and cough.

Its possible that physicians couldn't get his homeopathic constitution as they didn't ask the right questions. or they may not be classical homeopaths.

Thank you for your time to explain the logic. I procured Calc Carb 30 in liquid form yesterday and gave him 3 doses 4 hours apart only for a single day per your advice. All other homeopathic medicines and allopathic supplements have been stopped (He was taking multivitamin supplements for the white spots on his cheeks). I wanted to be sure that the medication was only for a single day. I will keep you posted on the developments in a week.

abhigoogle last decade
Yes, for the time being, this dosing is only for a single day.

Notice his sleep, diet, sense of well being and energy levels for the next 15 days.

If he is doing better overall, his immunity will grow and thus, won't fall ill every now and then.

However, if he is taken ill again due to cough and cold, refrain from using antibiotics right in the first week of the cold bout.

He started to have a severe cough spell since 7:30AM this morning. We slept with fan on at moderate speed.

The cough was of the same kind, barky and continuous. He vomited once clear sputum with little milk, frothy and slimy. But till now cough has not stopped.

His face is flushing red when he coughs continuously. Chest is going up and down and legs folding and nostrils have hardened crusts inside.

I'm considering the possibility of him requiring nebulisation again today.

abhigoogle last decade
As far as possible, let him go through these tough times without nebulizers or antibiotics.

However, if the cough becomes very acute, nebulizers can be used.

rishimba last decade
I'm a little confused. Wasn't cough the primary thing we were trying to treat? He had an acute cough attack again yesterday for 4 hours. Post giving him 3 doses of CALC CARB 30C I do not notice a major change in his cough patterns. His sleep has been a bit disturbed. Hunger has improved and he's exhibiting interest to eat more stuff outside his normal diet. I'm starting to make myself as a parent believe that the Cough is chronic and needs a separate remedy. I read somewhere on the internet that the standard protocol in homeopathy for Cough is Stage 1 - Aconite 30, Stage 2 - Bryonia, Stage 3 - Hepar Sulph. Consider my son has been suffering from cough since the last 6+ months now, would trying any of the above remedies help?

See source: http://www.txoptions.com/articles/coughtech.php

abhigoogle last decade
There is no standard protocol in homeopathy. All we do is to match the individual to the remedy. Also, treatment can be intended for acute cases or for chronic diseases.

We were trying to start a constitutional treatment for your son and his homeopathic constitution seemed like CALC CARB.

If the constitutional remedy is found out and given in the correct potency, his overall immunity will gradually improve. He will not fall sick frequently in the future.

He was fine for a while during the summer season. With rains and erratic weather and thunderstorms starting in Bangalore, he's back to his everyday cough at random times.

We showed him to a pediatric pulmonologist who clearly said what my son has is asthma and asked to get a blood test done besides prescribing Bricanyl 3 times a day 2 ml.

What is your advise?

abhigoogle 9 years ago
You alerted me to your baby’s cough on my website requesting my assistance and shall treat it here on the ABC of which I am a senior member. I note that 3 classical homeopaths have prescribed various remedies with no success. You have also consulted a pediatric pulmonologist who diagnosed Asthma and I note that you have your reservations on this diagnosis, to which I too agree.

It is possible that your son’s cough is due to the irritation of his throat by acid which is refluxed after a feed and this continues for some time after a feed.

The remedy I prescribe for Baby GERD is Nat Phos 6x and I shall copy my default therapy for Baby GERD which has proved to be very effective.

You will dissolve a tablet of Nat Phos 6x in milk given immediately and give it to him after a feed. Start with half tablet but if the response is not as expected, you may increase to a full tablet but you will not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours.

You may like to try to reduce the quantity of milk you give for each feed to enable baby’s digestion to stabilize. You will however feed more often. It is essential that you burp baby immediately after each feed.

You will avoid eating all food that can cause any distress to baby. You must know that they are passed on to baby through your breast milk.

It is best not to vaccinate Baby till s/he is over a year old as the after effects in some cases can add to the problems with GERD.
Do not give Baby any solid food till s/he is over 8 months of age.

You (the mother) will take Nat Phos 6x dose 2 tablets after each of 3 meals daily. The idea is that your milk will pass the effect to baby. You may like to know that Nat Phos 6x will help to reduce your weight by 1kg per week very safely.
Report progress in 24 hours and as often as you wish on this thread.

Joe De Livera 9 years ago
Dr. Joe,

Thank you for the quick response. My son is now 22 months of age and somehow I'm not convinced this is a result of GERD looking at his symptoms. He is now on solids (all kinds of food) and merely comfort feeds from the mother in the night. He did possibly have GERD when he was younger like when he was 7 months old or so but I think he has outgrown that phase. The cough presents at random times with or without a feed but when he's already coughing and we give him food we're pretty sure he will vomit. He also keeps rubbing his nose often with his hands and the bottom of the left eye is usually swollen and at times watery. He keeps having irritation with his nose and eye and keeps rubbing them sometimes so very hard that he scratches the skin. He also has itchy skin around the bums.

From the other cases documented on the net I think this is a case of pure asthma brought on by cold air, any change in weather, before a thunderstorm. He had very few attacks during the summer season and now that the rains have started the attacks are almost daily from 2-4 hours. He coughs in the sleep also. Given all these symptoms wouldn't the Nat Sulph 6c and Ars Alb 30c remedy that Dr. Luc prescribe for asthma patients in Sri Lanka be more apt?

abhigoogle 9 years ago
I can see that you are anxious to use Luc’s therapy which incidentally I have modified as I discovered that his ‘Split dose’ did not work with my patients. I do owe him the concept of the Wet dose which incidentally is a term that I coined as reference to the Organon, the Bible of Homeopathy did not have any record of the dose which I termed “WET DOSE” by giving all the remedies to patients mixed in a bottle of spring water.

You can use my default therapy which I shall copy below and you will report progress in a few days.

Your remedy is a dose of Nat Sulph 6c in the Wet dose taken twice daily, First dose on an empty stomach and the second just before bed which you will take nightly for 2 weeks, When you find some relief you can reduce your dosage to just ONE dose nightly. If however you do not experience any relief which can happen if you are a chronic Asthmatic, you will please report your status to me for further advice.

You will report your response weekly or more often as may be necessary.

You will not take any drugs when you start my therapy.

The Wet dose of any Homeopathic remedy is made as follows:

Order the remedy in the Ethanol pack also referred to as Liquid Dilution in a bottle preferably with a dropper arrangement.
Get a 500ml bottle of Spring Water from the nearest supermarket.
Pour out about 3cm of water from the bottle to leave some airspace.
Insert 3 drops of the remedy into the bottle and shake the bottle hard before you sip a capfull of the bottle or a large teaspoonful which is the dose.
Shaking the bottle hard is homeopathic succussion and this shaking must be done at least 6 times before sipping a capful of the bottle as prescribed.

Steam is also important and it must be inhaled for about 5 minutes twice daily. You can get the steaming device used in beauty saloons for facial treatment. You will most likely cough up a lot of phlegm immediately after steaming.

Physiotherapy is also indicated after steaming to rid the lungs and airways of the phlegm which is also the cause of Asthma. You will lay flat across your bed with your chest slightly elevated above your head which is hanging down over the side. You will get someone to tap your chest on the back from the waist up to your neck and you should find that your phlegm will drool out in cupfuls.

Exercise is essential for you and you will drink at least 3 liters of water daily.

You can also blow into a balloon to help strengthen your lungs.

If you get an acute attack of Asthma which you would normally treat with a Nebulizer you will take Ars Alb 200c in the Wet dose and this will usually bring relief within about 15 minutes or less. In the event of the first dose not working you may take another about an hour later. Please note that the maximum dosage is not to exceed 3 doses in 12 hours. Also note that Ars Alb is NOT for daily use and may only be used on a SOS basis if you discover that you cannot breathe as a result of an Asthmatic Attack.

Do not use Coffee, Cola beverages, preserved foods like sausages, ham and bacon as they contain Saltpeter.

Joe De Livera 9 years ago
I would advise to give him two doses of CALC CARB 200C on a single day, each dose 12 hours apart.

Wait and watch for the next one week and take notes on his improvement.

Dr. Joe,

Thank you for your response. I'm not particularly anxious to try Luc's therapy but a remedy that works for my child who has been suffering from this chronic cough since the last year. It is very difficult to administer steam to a child of 1 and 1/2 year. He becomes more stressed and coughs more. Also the 3 litres of water is pertaining to adult or child?
Dr. Rishimba here who treated my son before advises to continue CalC Carb which according to him is my son's constitutional remedy. Please advise.

abhigoogle 9 years ago
I have copied my default therapy for Asthma which I have prescribed for ADULTS.
My apologies for having done so for your 18 month old baby which I should not have done as my attention was diverted by your reference to Luc de Schepper’s therapy for Asthma, Nat Sulph 6c which he prescribed in the Split Dose which I too prescribed to patients which did not work at all. The Split dose is made by taking a teaspoonful of the remedy and adding it to a cup of water from which the patient takes a sip. This split dose never worked and I replaced it with what I termed the Wet dose which did work.

You may like to read the many accounts of children whom I have helped to overcome their Asthma with many CURED after using my therapy for some months, on my website.

I do appreciate that steam is not to be used for an 18 month old baby as is drinking 3 liters of water which is completely ruled out. So is exercise and the physiotherapy which are only indicated for adults.

You have asked for my opinion on using Calc Carb 200 which Rishimba has prescribed but I would prefer not to comment as I have no experience in prescribing it to patients. I note however that you have given the lower potency of 30c to your baby in the past as prescribed by Rishimba but the response has not been favourable.

I have never prescribed a remedy in the 200c potency to a child as it seems too powerful to me. I have always used the Wet dose and feel that the dry pellets can cause more damage than cure.

I have always prescribed my default therapy Nat Sulph 6c in the Wet dose and this has stood the acid test of time to cure Asthma and I must state here for the record, that I have not prescribed it for a baby 18 months old who according to you and your pulmonologist, does suffer from the disease.

As you are aware, I have already indicated that I do not agree with this qualified diagnosis as I feel that it is most likely that your baby suffers from Baby GERD for which I have already prescribed.

Hello,

Thanks again for the detailed response. I'm confused now about what treatment should I finally give to my son? Should we treat him for GERD (he does vomit on having cough) but I'm sure none of the other symptoms exist like acidic stools, sour smells exist.

I had been to the pharmacy and the lowest potency of Nat Sulph that was available there was 30C. He said there are tablets available for 6X potency. Can we try those and what is the difference between 6X and 6C? Alternatively in the event of 6C not being available at all in Bangalore can I attempt dilution by say putting 1 drop of 30C in say 1000ml of spring water? I'm unsure what my options are. I did manage to pick up the Ars Alb 200C liquid dilution though.

abhigoogle 9 years ago
I first diagnosed your baby's problem as Baby GERD.

Your consultant has diagnosed his problem as Asthma.

Rishimba has prescribed Calc Carb 200 when the 30c did not help.

You have to make up your mind which of the 3 therapies you will give your son but you must understand that I prescribed for Asthma because you insisted that he suffered from it. In doing so I inadvertently prescribed my default therapy for adults which you did not use fortunately.

You now wish to use your own therapy for Asthma with Nat Sulph and you must know that you cannot tinker about with remedies in various potencies merely because your pharmacy does not have the precise potency I have prescribed. You must use the remedies precisely as prescribed by me.

I feel that I am only wasting my time in trying to help your baby and unless you confirm that you will use my therapy for Baby GERD first to verify if his current distress is in fact due to reflux, I would prefer to withdraw from your baby’s case and permit others to take over.

Joe De Livera 9 years ago
Dr. Joe,

I approached you particularly because I need your help to cure my baby. I acted per your advise and went to the pharmacy yesterday. I bought Nat Sulph 30c since 6c was not available. 6x tablets were available but not liquid dilutions and since I did not know the difference between 6x and 6c I did not buy the 6x tablets and asked you for a clarification. In fact the pharmacist said no pharmacy in Bangalore will stock 6c potencies in liquid dilution form and that you'll always only get the tablets. So my next question to you was can we synthesize a 6c dilution from a 30c that I bought. I'm only trying to follow your therapy for asthma for my child. I am convinced that my son is not suffering from GERD and I'm not sure why you diagnosed his cough that way? Are there any symptoms except the vomiting that indicate he's been suffering from GERD that led you to initially prescribe Nat Phos 6x? I'm not sure why you feel you're wasting time on this case. As a parent I need to understand all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment and seek alternatives hence I'm only asking for clarifications. Please help me cure my child.
