Recurrent bronchitis in a child

Hello! I need help for my child (4 yrs) who gets ill a lot and usually is diagnosed with bronchitis. She has been treated with homeopathy, but remedies seem to have failed. Some background: desired child, prematurely born (2.150 kg), 30 days before term, lesions of Atopic Dermatitis at 5-6 months, started getting sick often (twice a month) since she started attending kindergarten at the age of 3. Running nose, cough, crackling sounds in chest, laryngitis (including several pseudocroups), bronchiolitis once. Started homeopathic treatment with Asperg Nigra, at times - Phosphorus, Apis, Ipeca. Then continued with Baryta Muriatica and Mycobac Tub. Determined as tuberculine type. Last bronchitis Phos did not help, gave her antibiotics and cough syrups - better, but still coughing and still single crackling sounds heard when taking deep breath (been ill for 13-14 days). Gets tired. No temperature. Only nasal obstruction, yellowish secretions, and coughing. Nature: shy in the kindergarten, otherwise likes to express herself in public, restless. If anyone can help, I will give more details. Thank you in advance!

P.S. Forgot to mentiion that she has had obstructed nose since she was approx. 20 days old. Snores when asleep even when 'healthy'. Constipation when she turned 1 month till 4-5 months. Since then - normal bowel movements. Loves to bathe and be naked. At night removes the cover in her sleep, even by kicking it. Loves to play with other children, but if they are rude to her - cries and goes away.

Given the history of the baby, I think she needs a well selected constitutional remedy as stop gap hodge podge of remedies won't give permanent help.

If you are interested in that, please reply to the applicable questions below:

1. Your age & sex

Hi! I will try to answer these questions as best as I can.
1. Your age & sex: 4 years, female
2. Describe your appearance i.e. weight, height, body type - tall and slim
3. What are the symptoms of your main health problem: frequent respiratory diseases, nose seems always blocked, sometimes running, coughs - often dry leading to reddening of face, even vomiting, diseases usually start with barking (pseudo-croup) cough at night, frequent bronchitis. I am mainly afraid that we will get asthma. When sick, coughs mostly at night, especially 5-6 a.m.
4. How & when did this main problem begin - started get sick twice a month since she started attending kindergarten
5. What makes the main problem better
I think that fresh and clean air help alleviate the condition.
6. What makes it worse
I have the feeling that it gets worse when she spends longer time in the bathroom.
7. What other health problems do you have
Diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, but lesions are small and now very rare.
8. How do you feel mentally & emotionally (weepy, irritable, restless etc.)

She is all of the above: weepy, irritable and restless

9. Describe your personality (stubborn, easy going, always in a hurry etc.)

She likes to play with others, either children of all ages or adults. When she can't do something, she gets annoyed and gives it up quickly. When with other children, she is not a leader, does whatever they tell her and doesn't mind.
Loves to run and jump, even scream.

10. How do you relax
Likes to draw, pretends that she is reading books, watch TV, films

11. Do you normally fight or flight
Definitely flight

12. What animals are you afraid of
Likes animals and is not afraid of them. Used to be afraid of flies, but now not so much.

13. What situations are you afraid of (heights, closed spaces, ocean etc)
Strong fear of loud noises, esp. drilling machines, motorcycles.
14. What occupies your mind mostly
Can't answer that for a 4-year old.

15. How do you respond to consolation & sympathy

Likes to be hugged and kissed.

16. Do you want to stay alone or with people

With other people

17. How is your sleep
Doesn't like to go to sleep, but when she does - sleep is unbothered, on one side preferably, sometimes on back, snores, when sick - blocked nose and cough irritate her but rarely wakes up, removes her cover.

18. Do you have any recurring dreams
Also can't answer, but definitely no nightmares

19. What type of weather do you like and how it affects your complaints
Can't answer what she likes, but maybe she was better in the summer

20. Do you normally feel hot or cold
Hot

21. What type of clothes you wear
Likes to take her clothes off or wear skirts and dresses.
22. What foods you love
Likes sweet things, yoghurt, chicken, fish. Likes mint candies.

23. What foods you hate
Hates vegetables, milk, most of the fruits (eats only bananas, orange, tangerine, lemon).

24. What taste you love (sweet, salty, sour, bitter)
Sweet, salty and to some extent sour.

25. What taste you hate
Doesn't like bitter.

26. Do you want to eat indigestible foods (chalk, mud….)
No.

27. How is your thirst
Doesn't ask much for water, prefers juices, still not that much.

28. Do you have dry lips & mouth
No.

Rarely sweats, but if she does - smells badly.

32. Any problems with ears, nose, chest, throat
No ear problems until now, the others - yes.

33. How is your stool & urine
Stool is different - sometimes lighter, sometimes darker, even mixed, bowel movements once a day, rarely misses a day. Urine - seems normal to me, sometimes wets her pants a little before she goes to the bathroom.

34. How is your sexual life & desire
Has sexual desire since she was approx. 6 months old (she was moving strangely when held and we were explained by a doctor what she was doing - she finds a way to get satisfaction).
35. Males genitals (erection, pain etc.)
---
36. Females menses details for regularity, flow, clots, discharge other than menses
---
37. What illnesses are running in your family, mother’s side & father’s side & brothers/sisters

Family diseases on my side - my father has chronic bronchitis (his grandfather has passed away from tuberculosis), heart surgery, diabetes type B, arthritis, gout; I have had stones in kidneys, I often get laryngitis; my husband has hay fever, eczemas, heart-burns (cured with homeopathy), food allergies and asthma in his family, his father died from Hepatitis C, his mother now has Hepatitis C.

38. Are you taking any medicines (allopathic or homeopathic)
Currently a medicine containing Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim and a cough syrup containing Carbocysteine.

39. What homeopathic remedies have you taken in the past (potency, dose, approx. time frame)

She has been taking Silicea 15CH, Sulfur Iodatum 15CH, Calcarea Carbonica 15CH, Baryta Carbonica 15CH - all of these once each other day; Tuberculinum 15CH, Lycopodium Clavatum 15CH, Poumon Histamine 15CH - once a week. When she gets sick - Alium Cepa 9CH and Ferrum Phos. 9CH alternating every hour, two hours, ect. At times - Hydrastis Canad. 9CH, Kalium Bichl. 9CH, Hepar Sulphuris 30CH, Pyrogenium 30CH - once a day, in addition to Schussler salts 3 or 6. Contunued to get sick often. Then discovered streptococci in her nose and throat - gave her Streptococcinum 15CH for one month, but in the meantime she had bronchiolotis so I gave her antibiotics. Then changed to another homeopath. He gave her tuberculinum 1M once, then prescribed Asperg Niger to take for one month, but she was sick in about a week or so. She has been taking APIS 200 when getting barking cough at night, which really helps for the time being. She also has Phos 1M for crackling sounds in lungs, Ipeca 1M for spasm in lungs and in case of any astmathic attacks. Phos helped once this summer, but now failed and since these sounds continued for 4-5 days, I gave her antibiotics which also didn't make them go away, though they are much less and weaker. About a month ago she was also prescibed Baryta Muriatica 200 to take once a week and Mycobac Tub to take 3 times a day. She got ill several days after she started taking those with flu - high fever 39,5 C, very frequent dry cough. Gave her Phos and Apis, even several times a day, as told by my homeopath. The cough was almost gone when it turned into this last bronchitis.
Where I have not written potencies - I just don't know them.
When I discussed her condition with the homeopath, he only increased the doses or frequency of intake. I feel that we need a PROPER constitutional medicine.
I would be grateful to hear your opinion.
Best regards!

Thanks for the details. I am speechless about all the remedies she has been given. Really. Who have you been consulting?

Is she on any remedy at the moment. If so, STOP all remedies.

Has she ever been seen by an ENT specialist. If not, the first step is to have her checked.

I need a diagnosis on her adenoids, tonsils, nose and ears if possible.

We have two problems to address. The chronic & acute (recent).

We will get to chronic later. Lets first address the issue at hand acute problem.

Please answer these questions:

What is the present complaint
What is her mental & emotional response during this complaint
Is she cold or hot
How is her thirst
Lips & mouth dry
Nose block/discharge color
Tonsils status
If cough, is it loose or dry
What makes cough better & worse

fitness 6 years ago
She was seen by two homeopaths - first one a Boiron-type and the second one was the so called 'classical' type, who was supposed to give her only one remedy, but obviously was trying to find the correct one. Also, when she gets bronchitis, or bronchiolitis in one case, we are always referred to an allergologist, never to an ENT specialist. When I say that she snores, both physicians and homeopaths say that perhaps she has a third tonsil, but never referred me to an ENT. She also has lymph nodes on her neck. Black coloring on her teeth since last summer, cosulted two dentists, said its due to the microflora in her mouth and 'not to worry'.

What is the present complaint: blocked nose, discharge is slightly yellowish, but thick and almost stopped. Coughs rarely, loose. Slight crackling sounds in left lung heard on stethoscope. Last bronchitis is almost 'cured'.

What is her mental & emotional response during this complaint: nasal discharge irritates her a lot, no other change noticed

Is she cold or hot
HOT

How is her thirst
Not thirsty during the day, wants to drink a lot of water before going to bed, preferably cold

Lips & mouth dry
No

Nose block/discharge color
Yes/yellowish

Tonsils status
Currently, not enlarged, normal colour of the throat

If cough, is it loose or dry
Loose, but very rare

What makes cough better & worse
Coughs when lying down, when running, now mostly in the morning
Went to clean air last weekend - coughed much less

I really want to stop this disease from going back so often, and especially to prevent asthma, which I suspect is the next step.
Thank you for responding!

In Q-7 you didn't mention about black teeth & swollen lymph nodes.

Are there any other health issues that you forgot.

Which lymph node is swollen, details please.

Details of black coloring please.

Q-34 Is she still able to satisfy herself

Is she interested in exploring genitals

fitness 6 years ago
There are no other health issues.

Which lymph node is swollen, details please - I'll try to explain - one on the neck, backside, her left, where the neck connects to the skull; one in front, her right, below the mandible.

Details of black coloring please - black-dark brown coloring on most of the teeth (looks like coating), back and front, near the gums. Started appearing last summer and gradually spread on most of the teeth. We wash them regularly. Don't allow much chocolate. Seen by two dentists, said that it's due to the microflora in her mouth and not sign of tooth decay.

Q-34 Is she still able to satisfy herself: Yes, sometimes when I'm in front of the computer, she sits on my knee and starts moving forward and backwards, then seems to get satisfaction and feels relaxed, sometimes falls asleep. We try not to pay attention and let her do it.

Is she interested in exploring genitals: She was at some point earlier, but I haven't seen her recently.

Where does she sweat

Can you describe the sweat odor (e.g. garlicky, onion, acidic etc)

How was your pregnancy while expecting her

Is she on any allopathic medicine currently.

fitness 6 years ago
Can you please list with approx dates the remedies, dosage & potency she had in last 6 months.

Where does she sweat: around the neck, but sweats very rarely

Can you describe the sweat odor (e.g. garlicky, onion, acidic etc) it's acidic

How was your pregnancy while expecting her: heavy bright bleeding at 5th week, then again slight brown bleeding months 4 and 5, took pills to keep the baby, in addition to magnesium, did not want to eat anything, used to eat 'by force', no food cravings, rejected even chocolate which otherwise I love, vomited month 2-5 several times a month, all the time had a strange taste in my mouth, felt better when eating onion candies, heart-burns month 8, could not lie down to sleep at night. Baby used to have frequent hiccups and kicked me a lot. Water broke one month before term, baby was delivered by Caesarian section, breech presentation, 2.150 kg, 44 cm. Bottle-fed, gave her my milk and formula. Sucks her thumb since 2-3 months old, since last year - only at night when asleep, occasionally.

Is she on any allopathic medicine currently: this morning took Sumetrolim syrup (contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and a cough syrup containing carbocisteine - prescribed by allergologist to help clean the lungs.

Can you please list with approx dates the remedies, dosage & potency she had in last 6 months.

May 2: Tuberculine once (don't know potency, given by the homeopath in his office)
May 6-17: Asperg Niger 3 times a day (potency not written on the bottle), in the meantime got bronchitis
May 17-ca.20 combined Apis + Asperg Niger; then I had to get back to pure Asperg Niger, but her cough got worse, so we stopped everything
some time in June - Phos 1M once
beg. of August - Apis 200 once
During the summer she had several pseudo-croups, I gave her Apis 200 once, it helped, don't remember the dates; one night I noticed that she exhales longer, so I gave her Ipeca 1M (after cosultation); she continued to have running nose and cough approx. every other week even in the summer
September 18- again one dose Tuberculine given by the homeopath;
September 21-25: Mycobac Tub (3 times a day, don't know potency);
September 25: Baryta Mur 200 to take once a week. On 26th morning she got diarrhoea, so I gave her Arsenicum Album 30C, it stopped.
October 1-2: renewed the intake of Mycobac Tub 3 times a day
October 2: Baryta Mur 200, October 4: got high fever and dry cough - Phos 1M, the next couple of days had high fever and terrible dry cough, esp. around 1 a.m., alternated Phos 1M and Apis 200, was in touch with the homeopath.
October 10: Ipeca 1M, she felt much better, but the cough persisted, it was starting to get loose and less frequent.
October 17: cough became worse, esp. early in the morning 5-6 a.m., she was panting. Tried Phos 1M and Ipeca 1M, but since things did not get any better in 4-5 days, gave her antibiotics and other allopatic medicines. This last bronchitis is almost gone with allopatic medicines, it took approx. 2 weeks.

All remedies are liquid, dosage is 2-3 drops, only Arsenicum Album was in granules - given 2 granules.

I apologise, because you asked me a couple of times if there are any other health issues - she has been having grooved toenails since the age of approx. 1,5 years. Sometimes it looks like two layers overlap, white color of the place of overlapping. Lines are vertical. Hope this will help you get a full picture.

First thing in the morning, before brushing/eating, is there any smell from her mouth and during rest of the day, if yes, please explain

There is an unpleasant smell mainly in the morning, but not too much unpleasant and I can only smell it if I am really close. I can't really compare it to anything I've smelled before. Any options?

Her skin is dry constantly or not these days: Constantly dry

Does she like warm things (warm food, warm room, warm bed etc) or cold
She likes everything cold, dying for icecream, wants to drink cold water, prefers to be cold than hot, undresses, removes socks, hats, sleeps uncovered.

Is the nasal discharge thick and doesn't run easily or thinner - currently no discharge, nose is blocked somewhere in the back, but it always seems blocked to me. Usually, when her nose starts runnnig, it's thin at first, then gradually becomes thicker, parts of the discharge get dry and remain on the inner walls of her nostrils.

Any tendency to nosebleed, blood in stool etc - Never

salihnel 6 years ago
Smell options: rotten eggs, sulfur, rotten food, dead animal, onion, garlic etc.

fitness 6 years ago
I have reached her constitutional remedy but there is a problem.

Your daughter's symptoms are getting messed up due to the medicines she is taking because when you suppress some symptoms using allopathic medicines true symptoms change.

If she is well enough at the moment, can you please STOP all medicines so that I can confirm my remedy selection.

If during this time you see a problem arising, inform me and we give the required remedy.

You always have the choice to use allopathy if you desire.

fitness 6 years ago
Definitely nothing dead or rotten, it's not acidic, perhaps sulfur would describe it best... In the day I literally have to put my nose in her mouth to smell it. Smells mostly early in the morning, but only if you are close enough.

salihnel 6 years ago
Allopathy has made me search for remedy on the internet... Allopathy prescribes her cortisone, methylprednisolone, corticostreroids... which I now refuse to give her. She took allopathic medicine almost 24 hours ago, I won't give anything else. Her cough has stopped, no discharge, only blocked at the back. How long shall I wait before I get in touch with you again?

salihnel 6 years ago
I'd say give it a week. If there is any problem during this time, please let me know.
