how's he now??

Better! I ended up using saline enemas and his stool has loosened up. They have a lot of mucous in them, but I'm hoping that will pass once his bowels normalize. I'm going to avoid solid foods for now. Wondering if he has a food allergy since it turned out so poorly with feeding solids. His demeanour is much better now and he actually fell asleep on his blanket on the floor at nap-time.

I am thinking about going with the remedy you recommended. Would it still be the same remedy? Symptoms are still the same, crying when trying to pass stool, stool is firm and only small amounts pass each time. Nothing I'm doing seems to really be helping. It seemed better temporarily and then back to being worse again. The teeth are still trying to erupt, I can feel them more prominently under the gums (it's the first teeth he has cut, and feels like two at once). He's having a hard time falling asleep, going to sleep late and then waking up early (6am) trying to pass stool. He doesn't want to wake up, but then is in pain and can't go back to sleep. He naps a little extra during the day, but not much. I'd say he is getting maybe 11 or 12 hours total in the day. Not enough for a 6 month old (he'll be 6 months tomorrow). He's still trying to be cheerful, but seems to wake up cranky sometimes like he just wanted to sleep, but can't.

So he finally is having good bowel movements, as of today. Yesterday we took him to the doctor and they said he has an abnormally small anal opening. The doc is going to talk to the pediatric surgeon in the big city (we're in a rural area), and it sounds like doing dilations are a possibility, either that or surgery. Meanwhile it's just breastmilk for him.
When I told my mom, she said the doctors told her I had a small anus also and that it was slightly anterior. So I'm guessing this is genetic and all related to the duplicated kidneys and ureters I have.
I'm also noticing again that his eczema is sensitive to sun. He was out in the sun on Sunday, then had a flare-up of the eczema which is now starting to flake and peel.

He is having a hard time falling asleep over this past week. He wants to nurse, and nurse, and keep it in his mouth just to nibble until he is completely asleep. He takes a long time to settle and has to be doing something with his hands the whole time, moving them, playing, touching something, until finally they are still because he's fast asleep. He seems extra restless.
He has a tooth just about to erupt.
He's been doing this thing with nursing where he will act like he really wants it, nurse for a few seconds or a minute, then turn away and remain faced away for a few seconds. He sounds like he is swallowing or playing with his tongue inside his mouth. Then he will come back to the breast only to pull away again and repeat that over and over. It doesn't happen every time he eats, but it does on a daily basis, sometimes a couple times a day.
He is still crying when he goes poop.
When we took him to the doctor, they did a rectal exam and caused a small tear in the anus. They gave us some Lidocaine to numb the sore spot to help him be able to move his bowels. Even with the Lidocaine, it still seems like he is in pain like before at times. Today, earlier, he had some nice liquid poops that came out relatively easily, but this evening having a few more firm ones that he is crying about.
He is doing a bit of crying about strangers again. I'm not surprised, after his traumatic day at the doctor's, being examined and it hurting and being in pain, that he might be afraid of strangers. But this had been creeping back prior to the doctor visit. He still is happy and content with family, dad and brothers and me. Happy to see us and smiling at each of our faces. Strangers' faces he will try to smile at first, in a nervous way, then look perturbed, and then be reassured if I put my face near his and tell him it's OK, mom's here, etc. But if I don't get to him fast enough he will break down and cry hard. Getting picked up by me and snuggled will settle him.

He is some worse about sleeping tonight. He keeps drifting off a little or relaxing a little and then starting awake as if he has a mild irritation or itch. He gets a frown and twitched and fusses, and then settles back down when I rock and shush him. It happens over and over until he can finally fall all the way asleep. He does this to some extent, occasionally, during naps, but it is the worst at night. He also wakes up crying once or twice, whereas he was doing really well before and not waking crying.

He hasn't pooped again in about 24 hours. He keeps trying, crying, and then stops. His whole body goes rigid as if it must be extremely uncomfortable.

Strangely enough, he was so happy and peaceful today during the day. I thought, wow! He must be feeling better! But then was worse about sleeping tonight.

Well, let me update. We were referred to a pediatric surgeon on Thursday, went to him and they admitted him to the hospital to clean out his intestines under sedation. He ended up having about a softball size amount that they removed from him. Sent him home with laxatives and told us he has a malformation of the anus that will need surgery to correct to be able to poop effectively. Right now we will just do breastmilk only and daily laxatives till surgery in 6 to 8 weeks.

Ok. You can update me after the surgery. I think surgery is necessary at this point of time.

It does sound like it to me, as well. He has been fussy since home, and afraid of strangers again, and sleeping restlessly. A lot of pain with passing the harder stool. But then having nice liquid stool that doesn't pain him. Is there anything more I can do for his mood? He seems grumpy or uncomfortable/irritable. I'm wondering if the laxative he has to take is making his tummy uncomfortable or if he's hurting from getting all that stool evacuated under anesthesia.

Yes its possible that laxatives might be making him uncomfortable.

I'm wondering if the baby's mood/sleep could be improved. He has been pretty grumpy lately. He just cut another tooth, but his first tooth didn't make him this grumpy, so I'm not sure if that's related. He's been grumpy ever since being in the hospital overnight. He started pulling his ear occasionally the day we went home, and I have been doing herbal ear drops, which seemed to help with that, but he's still grumpy. He seems more needy, and honestly I think he's not sleeping well. He's more agitated while trying to fall asleep, and will sometimes seem to get frustrated with nursing and turn away multiple times. He takes longer to go to sleep, needs a lot more effort from me to get him to sleep, and unless I lay with him while he sleeps, he wakes up kind of grumpy or unrefreshed, and then acts irritable while awake. Nothing seems to please him for long after awhile. He does love being outside, but I limit that because sunlight makes his eczema on his face flare up really bad.
The eczema is still there same as ever, and he still has yellowish crusts behind his ears. Seems like his bellybutton is getting some crusts too, so I put some ointment on it.
He has been fighting a cold for awhile now, a week and a half maybe? The only symptom is nasal discharge. Runny & clear sometimes, and other times thicker and yellowish. Sometimes the congestion makes it hard for him to nurse.

He also wakes up screaming/crying a few times in the first 3 hours of his nighttime sleep. I have to nurse/cuddle/rock him back to sleep.

Have you given him Chamomila recently? If not give one dose of chamomila 30C - 2 drops on water.

Report back in 5 days

homeodr 8 years ago
No, nothing at all homeopathically for several weeks. Just checking, do I need to worry about Chamomila constipating him? It said it was contraindicated in constipation, and I don't want to give him any trouble. He's not constipated now, I'm using a small amount of Senna tea every other day to keep his stools very loose.

alaskamom 8 years ago
I think chamomila should not cause any constipation. Just try single dose of it and let me know..

homeodr 8 years ago
OK. Gave it a few days ago and seeing improvement now. Sleeping more soundly and falling asleep more easily.

alaskamom 8 years ago
Wait for few more days, no more doses at this time..

homeodr 8 years ago
OK.
He seems to be starting to do a little worse again, being grumpy and not falling asleep very easily. He will act very tired and grumpy but be fighting sleep hard. Seems agitated or uncomfortable or something. He was doing well up until about yesterday. I'm also noticing he is crying at strangers' faces again. Any stranger, even friends of ours, pretty much anyone except me, his dad, and brothers, he will cry about. He starts out seeming like he wants to smile and then it turns to tears and he will cry hard until I comfort him. He seems to get fixated on their faces even though they scare him--like someone who just can't stop watching a scary movie.
