Please help me figure out my son's constitutional Page 2 of 32

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Sameer, given your knowledge of our current circumstances and history, are you still willing/happy to advise us on a remedy anyway?

Our son's current state is:
For the past few days very cranky and irritable. Throwing mini tantrums, especially when something is taken away from him or the word 'no' is used. Waking from sleep very irritable, crying and unrefreshed. Calling out in his sleep last night. Left ear appears ok. Right ear is blocked with warm wax and drum inflamed.

(Just to confirm, we are not giving him the herbal tincture.)

Hmm.. let us confirm the remedy further.

Please answer the following questions:

Does he have general aggravation from warmth/warm rooms ?

Does he avoid fatty foods ?

Do his infections tend to produce thick, green or yellow discharges ?

Is he ameliorated from consolation and affection ?

Is he posessive about his favourite things ?

Does he weep very easily ?

I will answer in general/broad terms and provide detail if his *current* behaviour is a bit different to that.

Does he have general aggravation from warmth/warm rooms ?

I don't think so, however we live in a very cold climate (currently middle of winter) and so he spends a lot of time inside in a warm room. He does enjoy being outside in fresh air and it always perks up his mood if he is cranky, but he can be very happy in a warm room too. When he gets TOO hot, he gets aggravated and very flushed.

Does he avoid fatty foods ?

We don't really give him anything very fatty at this stage.

Do his infections tend to produce thick, green or yellow discharges ?

Never seen a discharge from his ear other than wax.

Is he ameliorated from consolation and affection ?

ABSOLUTELY!!!

Is he posessive about his favourite things ?

Not particularly. He is fickle. He likes to find new things and gets attached to anything new and interesting. He gets very upset if you take something away from him, but will forget about it in a couple of minutes.

Does he weep very easily ?

Yes - it is usually crying from pain, frustration, having something taken away from him, hurting himself, realising he's not allowed to do something, or if one of his parents leaves when he doesn't want them too. His crying is not pathetic, weepy crying, it is outraged or angry or desperate or pleading or 'I can't believe you're doing this to me!' crying.

Is he clingy towards parents or an independent type ?

sameervermani last decade
He is very independent and will happily play by himself for quite long periods of time, BUT, he has periodic clinginess for no obvious reason and when he is unwell/in pain. At these times he will not let me leave his side.

If we (his parents) are in the same room as him, he will still play by himself, but occasionally crawl over and put his head on our lap or shoulder for a few minutes, and then crawl off again. He started doing that recently. (it's very cute.)

Also, he is very clingy and needy when he wakes at night time. He just wants to be held and soothed.

littlefinn last decade
What are his food cravings/aversions if any ?

sameervermani last decade
He really likes ham (we think he likes salty stuff).

He has always loved the sour taste of natural yoghurt (although not so much lately for some reason).

He likes sweetish biscuits (cookies) and bread. He loves milk, soft cheese and banana.

He has no particular aversions to tastes, but he often doesn't like squishy, soft textures.

His behaviour with food (like many aspects of his personality) has always been very changeable.

littlefinn last decade
Would you call him strong willed , obstinate or mild/yielding ?

sameervermani last decade
Eeek, this is a hard one. He is both. His temperament changes quite a lot.

He can be very strong willed an obstinate, and I guess my initial instinct was to say yes to that instead of the other, but that is because he is particularly obstinate at the moment.

At other times he has been most compliant and mild.

I think perhaps the best way to explain this is to say that it depends on the situation, on his mood at the time and also on the circumstance. For instance, yesterday in the supermarket, he wanted to chew on everything in the shopping cart and every time we took something away, he screamed in anger at me and really fought me for the object. But if I was sitting in a quiet, formal setting with him on my lap and he was reaching for something he shouldn't touch, I would be able to stop him without any trouble and he would sit quietly and take in the world around him.

It is a very hard question to answer as you can see.

One other piece of information I just thought to tell you - it may or may not be useful - he sucks on the middle two fingers of his right hand. He has done this since he was about 4 months old. He does it when he's tired, hungry, needing comfort, in a new environment, just met someone new (he will regard them very seriously while sucking his fingers for a couple of minutes), overwhelmed, thoughtful... so many reasons.

So, does he always insist on finishing whatever he has started ? Is he difficult to distract from his desires?

Ever noticed any sour sweats or sour stools ?

Any particular part where he sweats more ?

Ever noticed any aggravation from cold-wet weather ?

Does he always wish to do things by himself showing a desire to be independent and self-sufficient ? e.g. if you want to feed him , he will refuse and insist on eating himself.

Not at all. He is very distractible. He distracts himself - he rarely concentrates on one thing for more than a few minutes. It is very easy for us to distract him too.

Ever noticed any sour sweats or sour stools ?

Yes to sour stools. His stools are very changeable, but frequently are pale, soft and sour smelling.

Any particular part where he sweats more ?

He generally only sweats when he is asleep (but not frequently). It is mostly on the back of his head I have noticed it, but this could be because he mostly lies on his back or sides.

Ever noticed any aggravation from cold-wet weather ?

Not that I can think of, but I've not ever paid attention to that.

Hmmm. I have noticed this tendency with eating on some occasions. When it comes to playing, he is impatient when being shown how to do something and will rush in to do it himself. I think the answer is partly yes, but perhaps he hasn't properly reached the phase of development where I can say this with certainty.

Okay then , here is the prescription:

Dissolve 2 pellets of Pulsatilla 30c in a 250 ml spring water bottle. You can turn the bottle upside down a few times for the pellets to spread after dissolving.

Give just 1 teaspoon from here using a disposable spoon JUST ONCE.

Remember the restrictions I mentioned about no eating/drinking in the vicinity of the dose.

Let me know in 3 days after this SINGLE dose.

sameervermani last decade
Ok thank you. It will take me a couple of days to get hold of it first.

Hi Sameer. I have got the puls, but haven't given it to him yet. He is in daycare for a few days, so I was waiting until we were both home so I could watch him carefully.

I just wanted to post my son's current status before giving it to him, to make sure it is still ok.

The last two nights he has slept much better than usual and only woken once, but gone back to sleep easily and quickly. We suspect his ears are not a problem at the moment. He is eating REALLY well for the first time in months. We think this may be because of the dairy free diet (he is hungrier without all the milk and cheese perhaps), but it might be a coincidence. His mood is the same. He is very irritable after his nap (wakes with hot, flushed cheeks) and remains so for the rest of the afternoon until bedtime. Everything else is the same. Should we still go ahead with the puls now?

littlefinn last decade
Go ahead.

Hello Sameer. It has been three days since we gave our son the pulsatilla as directed by you.

There has been no significant change to report, however there are a number of minor things that we have noted, as follows:

Day 1: He was more thirsty than usual, and also seemed to have a bit of a dry cough (as if he had a tickle in his throat).

Day 2: He woke up with a little red (pimple-like) spot on his cheek, and a few hours later he had two more on his face. That day he had two hysterical crying fits when two different strangers got up too close to him. This is something he used to do when he was a very small baby (4-5 months), but never since. He is usually very receptive to people and loves to 'make contact'. Other than that, he was in an excellent mood all day, however we noticed he was a bit clumsy and lethargic in the evening.

Day 3: He was extremely irritable in the late afternoon, much more than usual. He cried during dinner, and several more times before being put to bed. He had quite a disturbed night and woke crying a couple of times, pulling at his left ear. It seemed to come out of the blue, but we assumed that his ears are hurting again and gave him pain relief. It could be an aggravation - is that possible on day 3 after such a low dose?

Overall, we have noticed that he hasn't had any sour smelling stools since he took the remedy, but this could seriously be co-incidence because they change so frequently.

Do you think this is a positive response? What do we do next?

littlefinn last decade
More thirst, skin pimples, and mild return of old symptoms is a positive response, and hence we must wait.

No more doses, update me in 1 week from now.

sameervermani last decade
Ok, will do. Thank you.

Hi again.

This afternoon, after his nap, my son was very irritable again - more than usual. He is pulling his ears a lot and we noticed this evening that his penis appears inflamed, and he has a nappy rash.

He had an infection under his foreskin once before, about 4 months ago, while he was being treated with Ferr phos. We took him to the doctor as it was causing him pain and distress and he couldn't stand water touching him, and they prescribed antibiotics. The doctor noted his ears were inflamed at the same time, and that was actually the first of 4 courses of antibiotics that he as on from then until 2 weeks ago.

Do you think this could be a further aggravation of the pulsatilla? Luckily he wasn't put off bathing tonight, so I don't think it is hurting him too much yet, but it is worrying me.

One thing that is on my mind is that he obviously received far too much ferr phos over the course of several months, and I'm wondering if that can affect his response to the current remedy. Should it be antidoted?

What do you think?

'his penis appears inflamed, and he has a nappy rash.'

[S]: This rash should not be interfered with unless it lasts for more than a week or so. Body has its own mechanisms of healing which we don't fully understand.

Right now , we must wait, as Pulsatilla has kicked off a reaction (with slight aggravation).

'One thing that is on my mind is that he obviously received far too much Ferr phos over the course of several months, and I'm wondering if that can affect his response to the current remedy. Should it be antidoted?
'

[S]: Maybe, but we will see once the response to the first Puls dose has come to a halt.

Sameer, this morning my husband and I are really worried because our son's penis is oozing from under his foreskin and is swollen and hurting him. We have to take him to the doctor. I'm not sure what he will suggest, but last time he prescribed antibiotics.

littlefinn last decade
It's me again. The doctor told us to use some over the counter anti-fungal cream for a few days. He is VERY unhappy today, so we think it is causing pain, unless there is something else going on as well (perhaps his ears are also aggravated). Is this going to interfere with the remedy?

littlefinn last decade
Skin eruptions supressed by ointments will cause problems in the long run, especially when it is a complaint which has ocurred previously as well.

But, since I am not observing the child in person, you are the best judge, if you deem it serious enough to intervene , you can do it with a non-steroidal ointment.

sameervermani last decade
Wow, it's quite hard to administer homeopathy with a baby, isn't it?! I mean, if it were me, I would happily 'wait and see' because obviously I'm aware of my own body and would be able to tell if something is getting worse or requires urgent medical attention, however with a baby, you just don't ever know 100% and you can only go with your gut instinct! It is certainly a challenge.

Anyway, we are using a non-steroidal cream, very sparingly, and it appears to be improving quickly.

I'll report back on Sunday, as you originally requested, unless something else major happens.

Sameer,
I have read through all the postings in this discussion and have two thoughts. How might you feel about a regular consumption of garlic to help boost his immune system??? Herbal I know, but also very synergistic and it might help break the cycle of so very many antibiotics and anti fungals etc. as it is naturally both. I have used it in combination with homeopathy with great success. Babies tolerate it well minced raw and mixed with yogurt and cucumber or hummous as a dip. I also use a raw scored clove directly in the ear or a drop made of minced raw garlic and olive oil to clear up ear infections promptly (usually within a day or two) while treating homeopathically the underlying issues. I understand the issue of masking symptoms, but feel it is better to quickly relieve the baby's pain when we have already observed the ear symptoms as part of the profile.
I have also a second question for the mother, are your child's eyes glassy and slightly dazed or his cheeks bright red especially when he wakes in the night or is ill??? Belladonna comes to mind and I had one child who used it with Pulsatilla constitutionally through very similar issues who's symptoms resolved very quickly with the combination of the two. It might be helpful as a follow up remedy after the Pulsatilla has exhausted it's action.
