Hi Sameer. Thanks a lot for your time. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

One thing I have noticed over the past 24 hours is that the cough is worse when he is still and quiet, sitting or lying down. The more active he is, the less he coughs. Eg, he coughs a lot when he is eating and drinking, going to sleep, watching television, sitting on my lap. If he is playing actively he can go for an hour without coughing at all.

Last night we gave him anti-histamine before bed again, and he slept well until around 10.30. Then we had a couple of disturbed hours where he woke and coughed a lot and couldn't get back to sleep because he couldn't stop coughing. Eventually he settled and slept without incident again until morning.

I realise the antihistamines are interfering in an undesirable way, but really we couldn't cope without some sort of medicine to help his condition in the short term.

To further complicate the situation, the doctor has told us this afternoon that both eardrums are inflamed. :( Terrible news as far as I'm concerned. I dread to think that life may return to what it was earlier in the year. :(

He didn't check his throat, and concluded that he thought it was viral. We'll get him checked again on Thursday.

Hi littlefinn,

Please give him 3 doses of

Rhus-tox 30c

at 30 mins gap

the dose being 1/2 teaspoon.

Report as necessary.

Sameer

Hi Sameer. Thank you for your attention, I appreciate it greatly.

Now, I really want to understand what we're doing here. I hope you can spare the time to explain it to me.

Are we treating an acute? Why Rhus-tox? I can see that the modalities match, as do some of the other symptoms, but I see nothing about the runny nose or inflamed ear drums?

Why do you think the chamomilla didn't work? Or do you think that something else is emerging as a result of the cham?

I also wanted to make clear that my son's general mood and behaviour is unchanged - he is happy and amicable as ever, although he is unhappy upon waking again (as he was prior to the cham 30c).

My husband looked after him today and said his cough has improved and was not as frequent as yesterday or last night. He also ate very well tonight at dinner - first time in several days. Not sure if this information alters your opinion.

Rhus-t indeed has runny nose and inflammed ears as well.

It is based on the current totality of symptoms. Cham was given as an acute remedy, and it changed the picture a bit which is pointing more to Rhus-t.

However, in he is improving hold off on the doses, and this always holds, we never intervene during improvements.

Ok Sameer. Thanks for that. It is not just the help with my son that I'm grateful for - I also have learnt so much about homeopathy from you and I hope this knowledge will be useful for me for the rest of my life. :)

Last night was an improvement on the previous night and he is in fine spirits this morning. I will keep you posted over the next few days.

Thanks again.

Hi again. No further improvements over past 24 hours. How long after improvements stop should we wait before giving a remedy?

I wanted to tell you of a few other little things I've noticed. For a while he had stopped being scared of enclosed spaces, but the fear is back again now. He has also developed a fear of certain noises in the last week. Noises like when I'm pretending to be a monster to scare him. These things made him laugh his head off not too long ago, and now he gets frightened and cries!

To help confirm the remedy picture...
- At the moment he dislikes bread quite a lot. He is also very disinterested in vegetables and fruit. He still loves all meats, mushy warm food, pasta, banana, milk and sweet, wheat based foods like pancakes. He has bouts of thirst where he'll drink a lot at once, usually around meal times.
- His bowel movements are still unpredictable and changeable.
- The sweat rash on his upper back and neck has reappeared over the past few days.
- He is most disturbed at night time between 10pm-midnight.
- He coughs the most between 10pm-midnight and also during his afternoon nap (1-3pm).
- His mood is generally good for the rest of the day. He is spirited, easy to engage with, social, happy and active. He is shy with strangers, but warms up to them quickly. He loves music, singing and dancing - it is second only to playing outside and playing with animals.

Also wanted to mention that with the cough, there is always a lot of swallowing. The cough always seems quite sudden and involuntary, sometimes his chest heaves as if he's going to cough and then he doesn't. Almost a bit like when you think you're going to vomit, but you don't - the action is still there, but it doesn't actually happen - if that makes sense.

It is morning again. Last night he woke up 5 times between 2 and 5am. Not sure whether it was his ears, teeth or something else entirely. He settled easily each time, but seemed to wake at the end of each sleep cycle. I suspect his condition is worsening. I was hoping we could give him a remedy today, but I am worried about doing that unless I hear from you first...?

littlefinn last decade
Are you sure that the cough improves from exertion ?

sameervermani last decade
Do you know what, I think that the cough is improving in general, while his night disturbances/ears are getting worse. It's hard to say for sure whether that modality is still true when he's not cough so much anymore anyway.

It is however, definitely true that he coughs more when he is lying still and/or sleeping.

littlefinn last decade
IF it helps also, I do not think that we have noticed any obvious aggravations from weather. It is summer here - hot and dry. When it is very hot in his room, he is more likely to wake sweaty and irritable, but I wouldn't say it's anything major.

I am torn between a Rhus-t 30 dose and Pulsatilla 1M dose.
However, I think it would be better to administer a 1M when the things are calmer.

So, please give just a SINGLE 1/2 teaspoon dose of Rhus-t 30, and report in 48 hours.

sameervermani last decade
I suspected as much! Will do.

We have a follow up trip to the doctor tomorrow as well. Fingers crossed he will hold off on an antibiotic prescription.

littlefinn last decade
Hi Sameer. It's only been 36 hours since I gave him the rhus-t, but I have some information, so I thought I'd post an update.

Unfortunately a follow up to the doctor revealed that my son's ears are much worse (red, inflamed) and his throat is also inflamed. We have a 7 day course of antibiotics to give him. I would like to hold off, but my husband wants to start the course ASAP.

Despite this info, last night was an improvement on the previous (terrible) night. He woke up three times, but only needed us to go in to him twice, and he resettled easily without needing pain relief.

Today he is not really his usual self. He is quiet and a bit subdued, his eyes are a bit glazed and he looks a little bit flushed, but he does not have a fever. He has hardly eaten anything all day and does not want to. He had an extra long nap this afternoon, probably on account of not eating.

It would appear that the rhus-t has/is doing something, but whether it's enough, I don't know. Either way, the doctor's reports indicate his condition is worse diagnostically, even if the remedy hasn't done it's full job yet.

Keen to hear what you think ASAP. It is likely that we will have to start the course of antibiotics tomorrow morning in any case, and I will update you then with information about whether tonight was any different.

littlefinn last decade
Well, personally, I would wait for at least 1 more day and then start with anti-biotics if the situation does not improve.

sameervermani last decade
Hi Sameer. Last night was again an improvement. He only woke once, no pain relief and he is in good spirits this morning. He also ate breakfast without any fuss. I guess the rhus-t is working well! You really are amazing - you have picked every remedy so well with him!

We will hold off the antibiotics to see what happens over the next couple of days, but what is the next step homeopathically?

littlefinn last decade
Well, we never bias ourself with a 'next step', as the next step would depend on the presentation 'after' your son has responded to the rhus-t fully, which is certainly not the case yet.

It would be a good idea to have rhus-t 200 handy just in case there is a relapse.

And, thank you for the appreciation. In an online setting, I am always limited by the description of the patient's symptoms, and hence part of the credit goes to you as well for observing your son very well.

did you take the Arsenic doses yet ?

sameervermani last decade
Of course. I have already gotten rhus-t 200C. It is a long trip to the dispensary, so I try to pre-empt what we might need each time. :)

I will keep you updated.

I haven't taken the ars yet. I was waiting for my menses to be finished this month, as each time I have taken a new remedy it has been at that time of month, and I think it is hard for me to watch my symptoms at that time because each menses I have had since I stopped breastfeeding has been different and it interferes with my perception of how I normally feel, if that makes sense. I will take it this weekend.

Hi Sameer. Two nights have passed. Friday night was amazing - he didn't wake at all, slept a solid 12 hours! On Saturday he began to be a little bit 'difficult' in his behaviour - more wilful than usual, and a bit needy. Last night (Sat night), he was fine for the first part of the night, but then he began coughing a lot around 11pm, woke a short time later, and was hard to settle. He was pulling his ears again, and after an hour we gave him panadol. He called out a few more times before morning. This morning he is clingy and quieter than usual.

So over all, the cough has gotten worse again, perhaps his ears too, although we can't know that 100%. His appetite is still low, and that hasn't really changed since he took the rhus-t.

Bowel movements - he went on Wednesday (very runny and mustard coloured) and then not again until Saturday (a bit darker, but very runny still).

Runny nose still coming and going every now and then.

It has been very wet and raining since Friday night. I do wonder if that has aggravated him. Like I mentioned before, I have never noticed a weather aggravation before, but it might be worth noting.

What should we do? We only gave him such a small dose of 30C before, should we give more of that or move straight on to 200C, or do we go back to puls?

littlefinn last decade
You can repeat a 1/2 teaspoon Rhus-t 30c dose once tonight.

sameervermani last decade
Can I give it this afternoon? It's hard to give at night because he has dinner, and then a bottle of milk before bed.

littlefinn last decade
sure

sameervermani last decade
Ok, thank you. :) I'll update you in a couple of days.
