Sameer,
I have read through all the postings in this discussion and have two thoughts. How might you feel about a regular consumption of garlic to help boost his immune system??? Herbal I know, but also very synergistic and it might help break the cycle of so very many antibiotics and anti fungals etc. as it is naturally both. I have used it in combination with homeopathy with great success. Babies tolerate it well minced raw and mixed with yogurt and cucumber or hummous as a dip. I also use a raw scored clove directly in the ear or a drop made of minced raw garlic and olive oil to clear up ear infections promptly (usually within a day or two) while treating homeopathically the underlying issues. I understand the issue of masking symptoms, but feel it is better to quickly relieve the baby's pain when we have already observed the ear symptoms as part of the profile.
I have also a second question for the mother, are your child's eyes glassy and slightly dazed or his cheeks bright red especially when he wakes in the night or is ill??? Belladonna comes to mind and I had one child who used it with Pulsatilla constitutionally through very similar issues who's symptoms resolved very quickly with the combination of the two. It might be helpful as a follow up remedy after the Pulsatilla has exhausted it's action.

Hello Alex. Interesting information from you. I have long praised garlic and attribute my own strong immune system to my large consumption of it. Unfortunately I cut down on my comsumption while breastfeeding because I was told by several 'health professionals' that it can irritate a young baby's digestive system, and we already had his acid reflux to contend with.

I have introduced it to his diet slowly and carefully over the past few months, and haven't noticed any ill reactions.

I've never heard of it used topically, so that interests me a lot. I am keen to hear what Sameer thinks about using it in oombination with homeopathy.

As for the question you asked of me... I wouldn't call his eyes glassy or dazed, but they are very bright and shiny. They have a twinkle, if you know what I mean. I think of glassy, dazed eyes as belonging to someone who is unwell, perhaps with a fever, and despite all his ailments, my son very rarely 'looks' sick. It is the thing I struggle with when we go to see doctors because they always think he looks very healthy and robust. His cheeks most often appear bright red after he wakes from a nap during the afternoon. I don't know whether they're bright red at night, as I very rarely turn on the lights. I have noticed a definite correlation between his red cheeks and other unpleasant symptoms (irritability, crying, ear infections etc), but it's not always consistent.

Personally speaking, I would not recommend much of garlic, as it has a very strong flavour, and can anti-dote a homeopathic remedy.

Hi Sameer. I am reporting back one day early, but only because my son's condition has detoriated considerably in the last 3 days.

After I last reported, we had used some anti-fungal cream on his infected foreskin and over 24 hours it healed rapidly and caused no further problems.

We had a day of peace, and then all of a sudden on Wednesday evening he started pulling his left ear and carrying on. That night we had the worst night we have had with him in 2 or 3 months. He woke almost every hour crying in distress and was awake for nearly 3 hours in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep. This was despite us giving him pain relief medication. Thursday he was clingy all day, just as he always used to be when his ears are bad and Thursday night we gave him stronger pain relief. He slept much better. I thought maybe it was a 'return of earlier symptoms' as you said in one of your replies, and hoped that by Friday we might be getting some relief, but he was still clingy and grizzly all day and Friday night (last night here) he woke several times crying a lot and needed more pain relief. He is mainly pulling on his left ear, but occasionally the right one as well.

This is definitely a big step back for us, because although his ear infection has gone on for the past 7 months, the last couple of months have been a lot easier to bear with gradual improvements all the time. This came on very suddenly. The only other thing I can think to tell you about the circumstances is that the evening it returned he burnt his mouth while eating dinner and we gave him a few mouthfuls of some very cold water to drink.

Otherwise, I wanted to report that his stools have definitely changed since giving the pulsatilla. They are no longer pale and sour smelling, they are much darker and smell more 'carnivorous' if that makes sense. (I am aware that this could have something to do with his new dairy free diet also.)

He has also continued to get a few more small pimply spots on and around his face, and over the last couple of days he appears to be sweating more than usual. His cheeks are more frequently flushed and chapped looking as well, since his condition got worse.

He is still eating and drinking reasonably well.

What do you think?

Okay , the remedy now is coming through very strongly.

Just 1 SINGLE dose of Calcarea Carb 30c.

Dosing procedure and restrictions are
exactly same as before.

sameervermani last decade
Really? I'm pleased to hear you say that because I have been worrying myself sick. Can you explain your thinking--has the remedy changed now? What will the Calcarea Carb do?

littlefinn last decade
From the very beginning , I was torn between Puls. and Calc , and to a lesser extent Silica but his recent symptoms are pointing very strongly to Calc.

Go ahead with the dose , he should feel better.

sameervermani last decade
Interesting. Ok, hopefully I can get some very quickly. When should I report back?

littlefinn last decade
4 days.

sameervermani last decade
Hi again Sameer. I should be able to get some Calc Carb today, but before I administer the dose, I just want to ask a few more questions--I want to make sure I correctly understand what is happening here for my peace of mind. I hope that's ok with you.

Do you think the dose of pulsatilla is what changed my son's symptoms to give a picture of calc carb, and how does this work?

Do you think burning his mouth and drinking very cold water had anything to do with it?

Why do you think he had such a sudden return of ear pain and disturbed sleep? Was it an aggravation from the pulsatilla? A 'return of earlier symptoms'? Or a coincidence?

What exactly are the new indicators for calc carb?

[S]: Yes, it has to some extent .

Do you think burning his mouth and drinking very cold water had anything to do with it?

[S] : Cold water causation is very much possible.

Why do you think he had such a sudden return of ear pain and disturbed sleep? Was it an aggravation from the pulsatilla? A 'return of earlier symptoms'? Or a coincidence?

[S]: Well it happens when you administer 'partial' similimums, it helps to bring the symptoms to the surface.

What exactly are the new indicators for calc carb?

[S]: There were already many indicators , but his infection being left sided, and eating and 'drinking' well during illness is very much 'unlike' Pulsatilla .

Other strong things which were not there in Puls and are there in Calc are his aversion to slimy foods, and playing independently for long periods when he is not sick, and his cry not being an innocent soft one , rather a demanding sort of a cry.

Littlefinn,

If he starts to improve by tonight , hold off on the Calcarea dose, let us see if he starts improving without the dose.

I just went through the case again, and feel it would be better to wait before Calcarea dose .

sameervermani last decade
Thanks Sameer. I can't tell you how fascinating this is!

I will wait and see what happens tonight, like you said. I will report back tomorrow.

Something else I have noticed in the last few days (although it might have been going on longer) is that he keeps playing with his tongue. Poking it out and leaving it out, and then pulling it with his fingers. It could be a developmental thing, but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

littlefinn last decade
Further to the above, I just wanted to point out that I think you are in the US, whereas we are in the Southern Hemisphere, so half a day ahead of you.

Tonight is Sunday night, the 5th night since his ear pain started up again. I will see how we go.

I have done some reading now about calc carb and I'm not convinced. Some things about him that may or may not not agree with calc carb: My son is extremely ticklish and sensitive to touch. He also likes to dance (as much as a toddler can dance!) and hear singing or music. He loves fresh air and being outside and if I take him outside when he's agitated or crying, he will immediately cheer up. He started teething early (6 months), but it has been slow going ever since. He was quite early with most of his physical development (rolling, crawling, standing up), but has been a bit slow with walking. He is not afraid or hesitant about new environments - he takes off exploring immediately he is put down. He is also not afraid of people and loves to 'make friends', although he does sometimes eye some people suspiciously for a while before he opens up. We call him a 'little performer' as he seems to be always showing us something or acting out something in a very animated fashion. He likes being the centre of attention. I would describe him more as muscly than chubby, although he does have quite a chubby face. Early in his growth, he had a very big head, but it is average now. His forehead is prominent.

Does that help at all?

littlefinn last decade
Ooops, one more thing I wanted to add was to specify the times of day he tends to be worse. Between 3 - 6pm is usually when he is most agitated, whiney, needing attention, wanting to be held. It is the time he is most likely to have a complete hysterical crying fit for no apparent reason. He very often wakes from his nap around 3pm and is very upset and agitated.

At night time, he most often wakes distressed/screaming between 9 - 11pm. Other times that we have seen regularly are between 1 - 3am.

littlefinn last decade
Hmm..interesting; his liking for fresh air and evening aggravation is very much covered by Pulsatilla (and Lycopodium). His waking up agitated and cross is more of a Lycopodium symptom than anything.

'He is not afraid or hesitant about new environments - he takes off exploring immediately he is put down.'

^^^This is very much a Calc characteristic. Calc children can be the most independent of all. Infact they can show a 'desire' to be independent at a very young age.

Slow in walking is again Calc, so is the large head.

Wanting to be centre of attraction is more Lyc. and Puls.

So, let us watch now, how the symptoms develop over the next couple of days or so, and depending upon it we can decide the next step.

sameervermani last decade
Ok, will do.

He is tricky, isn't he?

I wonder if perhaps all the allopathic medicines and incorrectly given remedies by our local 'homeopath' have muddied the case.

littlefinn last decade
Yes, I agree, incorrect homeopathic prescriptions can place accessory symptoms, which belong to the remedy picture and not to the original disease, and that makes prescribing difficult at times.

But, I do not think this is an especially difficult case, atleast we have indications for only 3 remedies. :)

sameervermani last decade
Hi Sameer.

It may just be wishful thinking, but I think last night was a mild improvement. However, we still gave him pain relief meds three times during the night (including before bed). He woke up twice, and the second time he was awake for 2 hours. It's very exhausting, but at least he wasn't crying the whole time. He pulled his left ear sporadically during that time, but mostly he just seemed agitated, restless and wide eyed. He also kept trying to put his head back as far as he could.

If we give him pain relief meds with ibuprofen in them, he's not as bad. We did that the previous night, and will probably do it again tonight too. It means we can all get a bit more sleep and he doesn't wake as often.

One thing I noticed this morning when getting him dressed is that the rough, dry patches of skin on his arms and legs aren't as bad as usual.

littlefinn last decade
Hmm.. let us give this 2 more days.

Let us see if there is further improvement.

You can keep me posted in the meanwhile whenever you deem it necessary or if the situation worsens.

sameervermani last decade
Hi Sameer. I have some more interesting things to report!

On Monday night, we gave our son the pain killer with ibuprofen in it, so he only woke up once during the night. That was good, but obviously the meds masked the symptoms. So last night (Tuesday night), we gave him one dose of regular pain killer before bed, and then waited to see what would happen. He woke at 9.30pm, very upset. It took a while to settle him (and a warm milky drink works wonders for him at night time - a modality I don't think I've mentioned before), but no more meds and then he slept until 7am and woke up in a good mood. This is great news!

Oops, I didn't mean to post that yet.

His left tear duct is weeping. It happened yesterday and today. It started with a bit of pale yellow goo, and then went watery. It's amazing! He had a blocked tear duct at birth, on the left side, and as I have explained, it was impossible to unblock with massage and saline drops, and required antibiotic drops in the end because it got so infected. I have never seen any eye issue again until now!

What do you think this all means, and what shall we do next?

littlefinn last decade
One last thing I forgot. Our son is in daycare on Mondays and Tuesdays, and he always gets VERY frantic and upset when his father comes to get him at the end of the day. It's as if he is showing him how unhappy he is that he was left all day. This Monday and Tuesday, he didn't react in the usual way. He was much calmer and nonchalant about the whole situation. I think this may be relevant, as it is such a big difference in behaviour for us.

littlefinn last decade
This is all excellent news.

Do nothing now as his body is well on its way to getting healed. The eye discharge, the improved behaviour, everything is just happening the way it should.

For people who might be following this thread , this is a demonstration of a power of SINGLE 30c dose.

sameervermani last decade
It's amazing stuff Sameer.

Should we leave his eye alone totally or can we clean it as it continues to weep?
